Theory of Action
• IF The Elk Grove Unified School District believes that equity is a fundamental component to student success, and when all staff focus on promoting equity to close the persistent gaps of opportunity, access, achievement, expectations, and resources where equality and non-discrimination are:
• Integrated into the mindset, work and lives of every student, teacher, and staff member
• Recognized as core institutional values and informs thinking, policies, and practices throughout our schools
• Inherently intertwined with academic excellence and the goal of developing leaders for a globally inclusive society
• THEN we will ensure decisions, policies, and practices are supportive of students’ learning, growth, and development fostering the ultimate goal of all students becoming college, career, and life ready.
Systemic Change
• The Elk Grove Unified School District’s overarching equity goal is to:
• Set in motion long-term change to create a climate and culture that demands and supports systemic equity to improve student success while narrowing the current and persistent gaps of achievement, opportunity and access.
Public Schools in a Democracy: The Moral Imperative
“You don’t have to go very far into the question of the role of public schools in a democracy before discovering that moral purpose is at the heart of the matter.”
“As the main institution for fostering social cohesion in an increasingly diverse society, publicly funded schools must serve all children, not simply those with the loudest or most powerful advocates. This means addressing the cognitive and social needs of all children, with an emphasis on including those who may not have been well served in the past.”
Michael Fullan, The Moral imperative of School Leadership, 2003
