“Environmental education is key in keeping our Earth beautiful and self sustainable for all to live in.” - Brynmor Coolman, Chairman
INTRODUCTION
EnvironMentorz is a Non profit Environmental Development organisation based in Eldorado Park, South of Johannesburg, South Africa. The organisation was established in 2016 after a community assessment confirmed an environmental deterioration within the area. Since its inception the organisation has worked to ensure sustainable environmental development within the community. EnvironMentorz has been responsible for leading the adoption of new concepts in combining environmental development with community development, youth and kids development, skills development, economic development and social development. This will take our organisation to the next level in developing our communities across South Africa. Our organisations goals and strategies are supportive and in line with the request of our communities. With 7 members, 5 young women and 1 young man. As a youth entity our focus lies in empowering our young people across the board.
COMMUNITY ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT AND PROBLEMS In order to provide relevant, sustainable and high impact services, EnvironMentorz partnered with the City of Johannesburg and other organisations to embark on a series of community Environmental assessments in the Johannesburg South region. Environmental audits were done to gather research and evidence that shows how we as individuals contribute to Environmental deterioration in communities.
THE ISSUES WE ENCOUNTERED FROM THE ASSESSMENT
•Most people do not follow basic hygiene practices such as proper waste disposal. (theft of refuse bins)
•Too many informal settlements in 1 yard, this overcrowding leads to poor refuse disposal, illegal dumping and sanitary problems in open spaces nearby. (unemployment, accommodation brings an income)
•The lack of food security brought upon by poverty and unemployment within communities. (hunger)
•Water wastage due to burst pipes and stolen water meters. (theft).
•Electricity wastage, illegal connections and cable theft. (theft).
•The most common is the lack of open space maintenance. (Crime).
WHAT ARE THE ISSUES YOU SEE EVERYDAY AND HOW DO THEY AFFECT YOU? ROOT CAUSES (Community engaged and contributed to the survey )
• Community Social Ills e.g.: • Unemployment • Poverty • Crime (theft) • Substance Abuse • Lack of Infrastructure maintenance • Lack of service delivery • Lack of Environmental Education and Awareness
WHAT ARE THE ISSUES YOU SEE EVERYDAY AND HOW DO THEY AFFECT YOU? EFFECTS (Community engaged and contributed to the survey)
• Deterioration in community infrastructure • Unhealthy environment which causes disease spread • Pest problems • No recreational facilities for leisure activities • Unhappy communities • Hunger • No access to natural resources
THE SOLUTION

I am an Eco Scout is an after school and school holiday initiative. The initiative develops young people (age 6 to 13) in becoming future environmental ambassadors. Our aim is to promote the physical, intellectual, emotional, social, character and spiritual development of young people so that they may achieve their full potential as responsible citizens to improve society. It provides an active and creative initiative where young people will learn through environmental education(theory, practical and environmental awareness). It focuses on basics of our Earth: how it was created and why it was created. The initiative educates them how the Earth works, how it benefits us as humans and how to conserve it. This will empower our young people to eradicate the social ills that plague their surroundings, to improve their communities and their quality of life on their own. The initiative offers young people the opportunity to visit sites of environmental significance.
