Pre-primary education includes the optional education of children

between 36–72-month who are under the age of compulsory primary

education.

Compulsory education lasts 12 years.

Primary school is the first 4 years. Primary education covers the

education and teaching directed to children between 6–10, is

compulsory for all citizens, boys or girls, and is given free of charge in

public schools.

There are four core subjects at First, Second and Third Grades which are; Turkish, Maths, Hayat Bilgisi and Foreign Language. At Fourth Grade, "Hayat Bilgisi" is replaced by Science and Social Studies. The foreign language taught at schools changes from school to school. The most common one is English and it begins at 2nd grade.

Second four years of education are referred to as "Middle School" but both are correct. There are five core subjects at from fifth to eigth grades; Turkish, maths, science, social

studies and foreign language. At eighth grade, social studies is replaced by "history"

and "citizenship". The foreign language taught changes from school to school.

There is an exam called TEOG. In 6th, 7th and 8th grades there are common

exams in every school. According to this results they choose the most appropriate high schools for

themselves.

High school education covers the education of children between 14–18

(9-10-11-12th grades).It aims to prepare students for higher

education, life and business.
