California State University, Fullerton Cogeneration and Central Plant Retrofit Fullerton, CA

Owen provided mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineering services including studies, design and construction administration for the California State University, Fullerton Cogeneration and Central Plant Retrofit Project. The design-build project included evaluation of the entire campuswide chilled water (CHW) and heating hot water (HHW) distribution and pumping systems, as well as other miscellaneous studies, for compatibility with the new Tri-Gen plant. Developed a new sequence of operation for all buildings with off-hours or existing booster CHW and HHW pumps.

University of Southern California Parking Structure #1 D-BLos Angeles, CA

Owen was hired by USC to provide structural engineering services as part of the design/build team for this project. The PS is 6-levels and 1,400 stalls. This involved exterior architectural finish, a design-build competition, and comparative cost analysis all led to the determination that castin-place post-tensioned concrete is the most economical and practical alternative.

Owen is the Structural engineer of record on this design build of a new unique 105,000 sf 4-story facility including a basement level. The structure is poured in place concrete with perimeter shear walls, and the floors are concrete flat slabs.. The design team completed the building, including detailing, using Revit (BIM).

Owen’s engineers were part of the design-build team for the demolition of existing facility and design of a new replacement 100,587 sf, four-story facility. The structure is designed with a Special Moment Resisting Frame system with Side Plate connections have been used to resist seismic and wind loads and provide a best value design solution to the owner. The new structural system also allowed the building to move horizontally to decrease effects of seismic activity. The use of this system decreased the aggregate weight of the building, thus reducing steel costs that were steadily climbing during the procurement phase of this project.
