II. Objectives of the Project

To promote nutrition, health and hygiene among children and youth in the Lao PDR

To equip children and youth with basic knowledge and skills in

farming and animal husbandry as basic vocational education

III. Project Implementation

1. School agriculture Students learn best practice in growing varieties of

vegetables and fruits as well as raising animals, the products of which are used for school meals to improve students’ nutritional status and health. – Small-scale agriculture (e.g. garden vegetables,

mushrooms, bananas, etc.) – Animal husbandry (e.g. pigs, cows, chicken, fish, frogs, etc.)

3. Health and hygiene Students are provided with safe drinking water,

improved sanitation facilities, and hygiene education that helps them develop healthy behaviours.

IV. Project Outcomes

1. Students acquire basic skills and know how to raise livestock and grow vegetables;

2. Students are able to maintain good health and consume nutritious food;

3. Teacher’s capacity has been enhanced on promoting nutrition, health and hygiene as well as on farming and agriculture;

4. Schools generate more income from gardening, farming and raising animals;

5. School’s infrastructure improved (e.g. clean drinking water system, water supply and electricity);

6. Student’s health improved through nutritious school meals and clean water;

7. Students are healthy and able to participate in all school activities;

8. Strong, positive relationship between school and the community

V. Challenges

• Lack of Teachers’ Guides on farming and animal husbandry

• Some schools are unable to continue the implementation of the project regularly, due to local natural conditions (e.g. lack of water supply)

VI. Lessons Learned

To enhance teacher’s capacities and ensure the effective implementation of the project, regular training on project implementation should be provided.

VII. Recommendation

Given the positive outcomes, the project should expand to cover more lower and upper secondary schools, and more ethnic schools in other provinces in the Northern and Southern parts of Lao PDR.
