2. OVERHEAD PROJECTOR 3. OVERHEAD PROJECTOREnhancesDue to the limitations of theblackboard, space, and time of rewritingmaterial, the overhead projector made itpossible for large and multiple groups toview the same documents without theinstructor having to rewrite informationnumerous times.Pond, K. S. (1963). A Language Teaching Tool: The Overhead Projector. ModernLanguage Journal, 47(1), 30. 4. OVERHEAD PROJECTORRetrievesThe overhead projectorrekindles the use of largegroups coming together andlearning in a lecture typeenvironment. 5. OVERHEAD PROJECTOR Overhead ProjectorObsoletesThe overhead eliminated the need to makelarge amounts of copies for presentationsor lectures. Most important the amountof paper every teacher needs for dittosand secretarial time will be greatlyreduced (Pond,1963, pg.4). Pond, K. S. (1963). A Language Teaching Tool: The Overhead Projector. ModernLanguage Journal, 47(1), 30. 6. OVERHEAD PROJECTORReversesThe overhead will beeliminated by the use of theElmo and other documentcameras. 7. The Elmo 8. The ElmoEnhancesThe Elmo allows teachers room to improvise on lessons. Teachersdo not have worry about making transparencies. This saves time.Having the ability to show pictures, objects, and other documentsin a whole class setting helps students make connections to newinformation. With a document camera in the classroom, there isno need for an overhead projector. Perfect for demonstrating howto do an assignment, teachers can freeze an image, such as a pageof a textbook, and walk around to ask students questions andoversee their work.Williams, C. (2012). Document Cameras Convert Anything Into Digital Content. DistrictAdministration, 48(5), 34-36. 9. THE ELMOObsoletesThe Elmo replaces theoverhead projector. 10. THE ELMORetrieves/ Rekindle The Elmo has the capability ofrecording. This brings back teacher/student creativity. Today, manylessons are geared toward teachingto the test. Using a camera to recordpresentations, plays, etc. makeslearning fun and moves away fromtest prep and helps learners makereal connections to learning. 11. THE ELMOReversesTablets will replace the need for documentcameras. The tablet will allow students to viewand interact with the information being presentedby the instructor. If you have an access to aniPad or iTouch you also have a document camerayou can use in your classroomBell, C., (2011) Turn Your iPad or iTouch into a Document Camera.Retrieved from:http://theinnovativeeducator.blogspot.com/2011/07/turn-your-ipad-or-itouch-into-document.html 12. INTERVIEW QUESTIONS FOR MR.BOLTON How would you describe your job? How long have you been in this field? Who sponsored the funding for the Elmo? How did your technology team help teachers use the Elmo appropriately in theclassroom? Do you believe the Elmo has increased student academic performance? Do you believe this organization allows you flexibility to implement new ideas? What would you do to increase the use of the Elmo school wide? Do you see the Elmo being around in the next 5 years or being replaced with anew technology? If you could get any technology funding you wanted what would you like tosee implemented? 13. ANALYSIS OF EMERGING TECHNOLOGYThe next part of this presentation is an overview of howthe obsoletetechnology and emerging technology ties into evolutionarytechnology, rhymesof history, science fiction, disruptive technology, increasingreturns and red queens. 27. OBSOLETE TECHNOLOGY RHYMES OF HISTORYI believe Rhymes of history explores why the newtechnology of the Elmo was produced. The overhead projector does the same job as the Elmo, but the Elmo has many extra bells and whistles that the presentpopulation has come to except when buying a product. 28. EMERGING TECHNOLOGYRHYMES OF HISTORYThe Elmo reminds me of a camera. A camerais used to a snap shot of an image. The Elmodoes the same thing. 29. OBSOLETE TECHNOLOGYDISRUPTIVE TECHNOLOGYThe overhead projector reduced the use of thechalkboard. The instructorcan preview the same material numerous times todifferent groups, in different areas, and not have to copy the same information on the chalkboard. 30. EMERGING TECHNOLOGY DISRUPTIVE TECHNOLOGYThe disruptive technology theory describes the Elmo.It has the same characteristicsas the overhead projector, in addition, the Elmocan record, take pictures and view imagesfrom many different sources. 31. OBSOLETE TECHNOLOGYSCIENCE FICTION The overhead would not be a piece oftechnology that would be used in a science fictionmovie. Science fiction movies usually deal with advanced technology in the filed of computers, teleporting, flying cars, and outer space. 32. EMERGING TECHNOLOGYSCIENCE FICTIONThe Elmo is looked at as being a new piece oftechnology in the education field. With that beingsaid, it still would not be a piece of equipment that would be used in a science fiction movie. 33. OBSOLETE TECHNOLOGYINCREASING RETURNS The obsolete technology and the emerging technology was not developed atthe same time. The obsolete technology was invented in1945, being used by the U.S army for training. The Elmo was invented in 2006.Zafra, A., (2009). Bright Hub. Retrieved from: http://www.brighthub.com/computing/hardware/articles/39556.aspx 34. OBSOLETE TECHNOLOGYINCREASING RETURNS CONT.This would go against the increasing returnphilosophy since increasing returns says When two innovations hit the market at about the same time, by chance, one technology gets locked in and drives the other to extinction. 35. OBSOLETE TECHNOLOGYRED QUEENS Red Queens theory is that there is huge competitionbetween two technologies and in the processcompetitors are left behind. The overhead projector didnt have any realcompetition. The only technology that was related tothe overhead was the slide projector used for viewingpictures. Laureate Education, Inc. (2009). Emerging and future technology. Baltimore, MD: Author. 36. EMERGING TECHNOLOGY RED QUEENSThe Elmo, is a document camera that was in competition with otherdocument cameras. The Elmo as well as the Smart camera have pulled in front of their competitors.Wikipedia (2012). Retrieved from:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Document_cameraad. ??? 37. SPECULATION ABOUT THE FUTUREOF EMERGING TECHNOLOGYWhat will happen to the Elmo in the next five years? 38. SPECULATION ON THE FUTURE OF THE EMERGING TECHNOLOGYThe technology that will outdate the Elmo will be the Ipad. Thiswill happen in the next 5 years. The state of Texas has supplied25,000 students with Ipads this year. Many other school districtsare piloting the Ipad. It is only a matter of time and moneybefore every school is using Ipads on a daily basis.Mkaufman, C. (2012). Ipads in Schools. Retrieved from:http://www.ipadinschools.com/ 39. TETRAD FOR THE IPAD THAT WILL REPLACE THE ELMO EnhancesThe Ipad will allowlearners to viewmaterial in front ofthem at a push of abutton. 40. TETRAD FOR THE IPAD THAT WILL REPLACE THE ELMO ObsoletesThe Ipad will eliminate the need for books. The instructor will no longer need to makephotocopies and this will help save millionsof trees. 41. TETRAD FOR THE IPAD THATWILL REPLACE THE ELMO RetrievesThe Ipad makes learning fun and enjoyable for students. 42. TETRAD FOR THE IPAD THAT WILL REPLACE THE ELMOReversesThe Ipad will reverse face to facecollaboration and will increase online communication and collaboration among students. 43. SUMMARYThe Elmo is a great resource for teachers to use in theclassroom. It saves paper, allows for teacher student interaction, and almost any item can be viewed andprojected. New tools are being created on a daily basis. Itis only a matter of time before the Elmo is the obsoletetechnology. The elmodoes basically the same stuff on opaque paper with their document cameras thatthey once did using acetate transparencies ontheir overhead projectors.Hastings, J. (2012). USB document camera.
