Greetings SDA Members & Guests, Are you ready to Design your Future? It’s time to focus on what the future holds for us as individuals, as a society, as a profession. Learn More, Do More, Lead from the Francis Marion Hotel, June 8-11, 2011! The Francis Marion Hotel is located in the design district of historic downtown Charleston, SC. As the only “high rise” hotel, rising 12 stories above the historic district, many of the rooms in the Francis Marion offer spectacular views of Charleston’s church steeples, antebellum mansions and famous harbor. Guests can enjoy classic Southern cuisine for breakfast, lunch and dinner at The Swamp Fox Restaurant, complete spa services at Spa Adagio, cocktails and piano music in the Swamp Fox Bar and all your coffee needs can be met at the Starbucks located within the hotel. Located on historic Marion Square, the magnificent gardens, house museums, antique shops, local boutiques, restaurants and nightlife that make Charleston unique , are all an easy walk from the hotel. This year’s educational and networking schedule is sure to impress. We have secured expert speakers who will be presenting topics relative to the A/E/C industry. With over 25 hours of continuing education offered, you are sure to walk away with new ideas that you will be able to bring back and implement into your firm. And what about events to get us out of the hotel and other networking opportunities? Well we listened to your feedback and are excited to offer many opportunities including a welcome reception at a local wine and art gallery, a private charter harbor dinner cruise where guests will partake in a three-course dinner, drinks and dancing, and other walking tours. Folks who live in Charleston bemoan one thing, time and again: there’s so much to do, we don’t know where to start. Here’s a never-fail plan: Stroll. Explore. Browse. Taste. See. Do. Oh, and make sure to get in all those continuing education units too! So...are you ready to come “Where History Lives” to Design your Future? Sign up today for the 2011 SDA EDSymposium… Tami M. The Executive Committee, the staff at SDA Headquarters, and the EDSymposium 11 committee are excited to invite you to join us in Charleston, South Carolina! This year, we’ll be shaking things up a bit. Here are a few changes to look for: Business casual dress for all the sessions and meetings. To

say that Charleston is hot is an understatement! Let’s all be comfortable while we learn, network, and conduct the business of the society. As usual, our Celebration Banquet Saturday evening will be cocktail attire. Personally, I’m not packing any suits and I’m feeling pretty thrilled about it. We won’t be starting EDS11 with a Leadership Day. Instead, we’ve planned leadership seminars throughout our four days together. We hope everyone will come away with new (or improved) leadership skills for both personal and professional growth. The presentation of the Annual Report will be pared down, and will be made available online well before June. The intent is to move as quickly as possible through routine items so that we can concentrate on any important business of the society that comes before us. So many great seminars, such delicious food (grits! Fried green tomatoes! Shrimp martinis! She-crab soup!), and fun networking opportunities at our social events! Who could resist? My theme for this term is “Learn More, Do More, Lead”. EDSymposium is our opportunity to come together to educate our members and to discover and nurture future leaders. I hope that our event in Charleston fosters both these goals, and that every attendee has a wonderful experience, learns much, and returns home rejuvenated and focused. True leaders are chapters, not books. They are stewards of a legacy, serving as links between the past and future. ~ Marilyn Carlson Nelson Karen Roman, CDFA, LEED AP 2010-2011 National President

Clients from Hell & Other Love Stories

Steven Burns One of the most traumatic experiences an architect faces is when the client relationship breaks down. Sometimes this happens in a meeting, other times it arrives in the form of a certified letter from an attorney. In either case, most architects take the blow personally and respond emotionally. This session will examine the correct approaches to handling these situations so the firm and the team are not emotionally and financially exhausted and energy can be applied to areas that improve the firm and its projects. In addition and more importantly, we will learn how to better manage the client and their project; ways to increase sensitivity amongst the team members so they can recognize the subtle cues coming from clients and respond appropriately before the situation gets out-of-hand.

Educational Sessions A Primer on FAR Deborah Gil

As the commercial building market has dried up in the past two years, more and more companies have turned to the federal marketplace. Working in the federal marketplace brings a whole new set of regs and rules that have to be followed. On the accounting side, the Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR) is the core of the regs that need to be followed and the 2009 AASHTO guide is the key to interpreting these regs for A/E firms. Not only must you prepare your overhead statement in compliance with these regs, but you also must defend them in an audit from the DCAA or a state DOT. In this session, you will: Understand the benefits of

obtaining an independent FAR audit from a CPA firm and how to select one,

Know how to set up a FAR overhead statement with notes that refer back to the FAR regs,

Know how to conduct an executive compensation analysis,

Understand the concepts of a l lowable, reasonable, and allocable expenses

Understand the latest hot buttons on compensated overt ime, bonuses, executive compensation, pro bono work.

The Art of Personal Branding

James Patrick The A/E/C industry has witnessed profound evolution in only a short time. Wi th th is sh i f t the ro le o f administrative professionals has been expanded and the opportunities have been increased. Thus, it is important for this group of professionals to transition themselves from being viewed as an administrative cost to a core value within their company and industry. We have the opportunity to

do this through proper leverage of our own personal brand. It is our personal brand which determines whether or not we get hired, promoted, talked about, or have the opportunity to do work that we find important. And whether we want it to or not, our personal brand is already shaping how people view us. Every action taken or missed constantly adjusts the character and perception of your personal brand. This presentation will lay the groundwork for how you can take control of yours.

Developing Winning Proposals Gina Bedoya

During these challenging times, the way one responds to a Request for Proposal (RFP) can be key to winning or losing the project. Come learn how to implement winning strategies when responding to an RFP. In this session, we will discuss how to decipher an RFP, understanding what the client really wants, how to differentiate your firm from competitors and how you can prepare and produce winning proposals. We will go through a systematic process to get you organized and create a detailed checklist to assure you address all components of the RFP. Get your firm ahead by assuring you are submitting top-quality proposals!

Going Green: Paperless Invoicing & Digital

Submissions Bob Batcheler Removing paper from everyday work processes does more than promote sustainability. It can also remove steps f rom your workf lows, rais ing productivity and reducing opportunities for mistakes. This presentation shows you how the speakers are using office and project information management software to electronically process invoices and submittals.

Participants will: Discover new software to stream-

line routine office tasks, or learn new applications for the software if it’s already in place in their offices.

Be able to speed up cash flow by reducing the t ime project managers require to review invoices.

Learn how to better manage e x p e c t e d s u b m i t t a l s a n d streamline the submittal approval process in their offices.

Be able to reduce their firm’s environmental impact as well as de-clutter the workplace.

Reputation Studies & Client Satisfaction

Programs Dennis M. Schrag/Nancy Aber Goshaw For its strategic planning, a New York City architectural firm researched its image with clients, past clients and prospects. A client satisfaction program was implemented. The owner and consultant will share what they did and how they did it and the impact on the organization. Attendees will learn: What is an image study and how to

conduct one; how one firm changed its strategy based on client and prospect perceptions.

What are the internal and external variables of a client satisfaction program; how one firm designed and implemented a new client feedback mechanism and after 9 months, was it worth it.

What percentage of a national r e p r e s e n t a t i v e s a m p l e o f p r o f e s s i o n a l d e s i g n a n d construction firms have conducted a client perception study, gathered client satisfaction data and how did they use the data.

Educational Sessions Self Guided Walking Tour

The Historic District of Charleston lies on the peninsula created by the confluence of the Cooper and Ashley Rivers. This small area constitutes one of the great historic sites of the United States. Within these few square miles you will find over a thousand registered historic sites as well as a treasury of homes and public buildings matched by few other cities in the country. Throughout the Historic District, buildings and sites of historic significance are designated with historical markers and plaques. You will also notice round iron markers on many of the homes. These are distinctions awarded to homeowners who have show great effort in the preservation and restoration of their homes. This is called the Carolopolis Award which is bestowed by the Preservation Society of Charleston. On other buildings, largely in the French Quarter and on Broad Street, you will also notice other oval-shaped iron plates featuring the symbols of the first fire insurance companies which operated largely in the nineteenth century.

Palmetto Carriage Tour

Palmetto Carriage Company A carriage tour of Charleston is a blend of knowledge, wit, humor, and history. It is exciting and ever changing, the ultimate urban battle of the 19th century conveyance in a 21st century city. During the one-hour tour you will be experiencing 25—30 blocks of Charleston’s historic downtown district. You will see houses, gardens, mansions, churches, and parks. You will hear about building, history,

architecture, flora and people. Most importantly you will become one with all that Charleston has to offer the visitor.

Public Speaking

James Patrick Public speaking is a common source of stress for everyone. Many of us would like to avoid this problem entirely, but this is hard to do. Whatever our work environment may look like, eventually we will need to speak in public to get certain tasks accomplished. And it we want to be leaders or achieve anything meaningful in our lives, we will often need to speak to groups, large and small, to be successful. The truth about public speaking, however, is it does not have to be stressful! If you correctly understand the hidden cause of public speaking stress, and if you keep just a few key principles in mind, speaking in public will soon become an invigorating and satisfying experience for you.
