BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE TSCM TRAINING COURSES

1. Basic Course in Electricity and Electronics for TSCM Practitioners (1 week)

The one-week course has been designed for TSCM practitioners to familiarise them with the basic principles of electronics, electricity and telephone systems. The course helps them to prepare for the basic course in TSCM. The course is however not a prerequisite for attending the basic course in TSCM.

2. Basic Course in Technical Surveillance Countermeasures (TSCM) (2 weeks)

The basic course is suitable for the individual who has no or little previous experience in technical surveillance countermeasures (TSCM). The course has been designed to allow prospective technical surveillance countermeasures practitioners to develop the necessary basic knowledge and skills to provide countermeasures services and consultation to their organisations and clients.

The course introduces the attendee to the technical and real life status of current electronic surveillance threats and ways to detect and counter them. All phases of electronic countermeasures

are covered and hands-on experience is acquired through the use of various manufacturers’ equipment.

3. Talan 3 Telephone and Line Analyser Operator Course (1 week)

The focus of the Talan 3 Telephone and Line Analyser Operator Course is to train and to familiarise the TSCM practitioner with all the functions of the Talan instrument. The Talan DPA-7000 Telephone and Telephone Analyser is currently the only dedicated telephone testing instrument available to TSCM practitioners. The focus during the course is on the functions of the instrument with many practical exercises.

4. OSCOR Blue/Green Spectrum Analyser and Radio Frequency (RF) Operator Course (1 week)

The five-day course focusses primarily on the radio frequency (RF) environment and the operation and the deploy-

ment of the OSCOR Blue/Green spectrum analyser during TSCM surveys. The aim of

the course is to train and to familiarise the operator with the OSCOR Blue/Green’s functions and to provide the operator with insight into the different RF attacks from traditional analogue voice and video to more sophisti-cated devices operating on GSM, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

5. Advanced Telephone Testing Course for TSCM Practitioners (1 week)

A prerequisite for attending this course is attendance of the basic course in TSCM or an equivalent course or the Talan operator course. Attendees must have prior basic knowledge of telephone testing and TSCM protocols to be able to attend the course.

During the advanced telephone testing training course the complete telephone system is discussed. It starts at the exchange and focuses on both national and international switching.

The different vulnerabilities within an exchange and places where to attack a specific conversation is examined. As part of the advanced telephone testing training course attendees also have to do practical exercises which include the colour coding, wiring a distribu-tion frame and building devices to attack and to intercept a telephone conversation.

The two-day course focus ses on the management of the TSCM function, admini-stra tion, budget ing, report writing, client liaison, marketing and other basic operational issues.

The course is for the brave and has been designed for TSCM practitioners who know it all and who would like to confirm that their skills are top notch. For three days attendees are tested on various levels to see if they have what it takes to be called a true TSCM professional.

Attendees work on their own and sometimes in groups, learn from others, network and identify new techniques to enable them to stay on top of the latest threats.

A prerequisite for attending the refresher course is the successful completion of a basic and an advance TSCM course and at least two year’s practical experience in the field.

11. Workshop: Nuts and Bolts of TSCM for Security Managers (2 days)

The workshop is aimed at help-ing risk managers, security professionals, informa-tion protection officers and specialists find ways of managing the threat of electronic eaves-dropping.

The purpose of the two-day Nuts and Bolts workshop is to acquaint those re-sponsible for informa-tion protection in their organisations with all the aspects of the management of tech-nical surveillance countermeasures (TSCM) services and procedures.

Attendees learn through practical exercises how to modify telephone instruments for a number of different types of attacks. A full section of the course is dedicated to VoIP

attacks and countermeasures as well as the wiring/distribution of IT cables.

6. GSM, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Modern RF Detection Training Course (3 days)

The course is aimed at practitioners who have not yet attended an advanced TSCM course or who have attended courses a few years ago but need to update themselves regarding the latest technical surveillance attacks and countermeasures on GSM, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and new modulation techniques. Attendance of the basic course in TSCM and the Oscor Blue/Green course is a prerequisite for attending this course.

7. Advanced Course in TSCM (2 weeks)

A prerequisite for attending the advanced course in TSCM is the completion of the basic course in TSCM, the Talan and Oscor Blue/Green courses. The objectives of the advanced course are to hone the skills acquired in the basic course and to expose the attendees to advanced theory, techniques and practices. The course provides attendees with further in-depth instruction on the nature of the vulnerabilities of electronic telephone and modern communications systems to manipulation and interception.

Attendees study encrypted video transmissions, encrypted voice on 2.4 GHz, AC powerline transmitters, etc. The course has a full section on vehicle investigations and searches. Tracking devices are installed in one of our vehicles and attendees conduct sweeps of the vehicle. Instrumentation such as thermal imaging that supports the NLJD during physical inspections is studied and evaluated.

8. Offensive Techniques Course for TSCM Practitioners (1 week)

This unique course has been designed for TSCM practitioners to provide them with a better understanding

of offensive technical surveillance techniques and equipment and to help them to improve their

countermeasures skills and trade craft.

The five-day course focusses on technical surveillance electronics, tactical elec-tronic fundamentals, covert electronic

surveillance, installation and conceal-ment techniques, video techniques and

operation, telephone operating principals, power sources and operational considerations

as well as vehicle installations. Theory is supported with planning, executing and daily practical exercises.

CONCLUSION

Training courses can be tailored to suit individual and group requirements. We also offer personalised training and mentoring programmes.

Training could be done at your own facility. EDS has in the past conducted in-house TSCM training courses in Australia, Belgium, Egypt, England, Singapore, Sweden and Zambia.

EDS has a wide range of equipment from a number of technical surveillance countermeasures equipment manufacturers to cover the latest threats and countermeasures.

Students have access to Andre and Wam-108 near field detec-tors, Oscor Blue and Oscor Green spectrum analysers, Talan V 3 telephone analysers, Orion 2.4, Orion 2.4 HX, Orion 900 and Hawk NLJD’s, GSM and Wi-Fi detection equipment such as the SearchLight, thermal imagers and other sophisticated detection equipment. Most of the training is done on equip-ment manufactured by Research Electronics International (REI) (USA). Attendees are, however, also welcome to bring their own equipment for the advanced training course.

Please visit the training section on our web pages for the train ing itinerary and course dates.
