33kV Single Core XLPE Cables Document Number: EDS 02-0034
The purpose of this engineering standard is to provide designers, installers and operators with the necessary technical and practical information required to enable the safe and efficient use of the new range of 33kV Single Core XLPE cables in UK Power Networks (UKPN).
2 Scope
This document only covers the five main types of single core 33kV cable supplied by one of the following cable manufacturers:
Cabelte (Portugal);
Nexans (France, Greece, Norway and Turkey);
NKT Cables (Denmark);
Solidal (Portugal). The standard sizes are as follows:
300mm2 aluminium conductor single core XLPE cable with a 82mm2 aluminium wire screen and a MDPE outer sheath, with a conductive outer layer;
500mm2 aluminium conductor single core XLPE cable with a 82mm2 aluminium wire screen and a MDPE outer sheath, with a conductive outer layer;
630mm2 aluminium conductor single core XLPE cable with a 82mm2 aluminium wire screen and a MDPE outer sheath, with a conductive outer layer;
1000mm2 aluminium conductor single core XLPE cable with a 82mm2 aluminium wire screen and a MDPE outer sheath, with a conductive outer layer;
1200mm2 aluminium conductor single core XLPE cable with a 82mm2 aluminium wire screen and a MDPE outer sheath, with a conductive outer layer.
Note: All the above are also available with a low smoke zero halogen sheath for installation in cable tunnels, basements, etc.

4 Current Rating Table for 33kV Single Core Cables
This table provides a guide to the current ratings for 33kV single XLPE core cables. All the ratings quoted are Distribution Ratings for 1 single circuit installed in trefoil, solidly bonded only and are in accordance with Engineering Recommendation P17. The MVA ratings are for a three-phase supply. Details for multiple cable circuits are listed in Appendix A:

5 Current Rating Tables for Comparison with Existing Designs
The tables in this section are designed to provide a guide between the current ratings of existing designs and the new 33kV single core cables. All the ratings quoted are Distribution Ratings and are in accordance with Engineering Recommendation P17. The MVA ratings are for a three-phase supply. Summer values should generally be used for design purposes as they are the most onerous.
