UNIVERSAL DESIGN FOR LEARNING
• There is not an average student, so designing for one is impractical
• Both ends of the spectrum are being marginalized
• Heart of design is to be flexible and allow various ways to achieve universal design and so everyone learns
MAIN PRINCIPLES OF LEARNING
• 3 principles•How does learner pick up information?•How does learner react to information?•How is the learner engaged?
UNIVERSAL DESIGNS OF LEARNING PRINCIPLES
• Multiple means of representations• Learning styles are important
• Multiple means of action and expression• Students differ in the way they
communicate
• Multiple means of engagement• If not met, all other principles
are lost
4 COMPONENTS
• What are the goals?
• Materials used
• Methods
• Means of Assessment
• All of these components are necessary for universal design because they ensure that at any time in the learning process, there are many designs to suit every students.
