as you know, one of the biggest considerations you’re faced with when it comes to choosing a rental is your choice of location.

Unlike furniture, paint and decor, it’s the one thing that you cannot change, so it’s important to choose well.

What are the critical things to consider when choosing a location? There are so many personal variables it’s really up to you to decide. As an example, if it is just as important to you to be close to your children’s school as it is to your place of work, then look for a place that offers you the best of both worlds. If you own a car and want to use public transportation whenever possible to save on parking and gas costs, a well-connected mass transit location may be a better option for you. If you’re a walker, close proximity to major amenities should be a definite consideration. Doing errands such as grocery shopping and banking on foot has many health benefits and gives you a chance to meet your neighbours and discover new places too.

Don’t let the cost of rent solely dictate your choice of location. Make a list of your priorities first, and then take the time to assess each location for its merits and weigh your options.

how do you know when you’ve found the right apartment?Apartment hunting isn’t easy. The right location, the right

amount of space and the right budget are very important factors. But you need to go beyond the basics. The apartment has to feel right.

Whether it’s the layout, the lighting or the quaint detailing from the building’s era, know what you want in terms of style.

Sometimes a key point is a specific exposure. A green thumb might want their balcony to get as much sunlight as possible, while someone who works the night shift might prefer a western exposure to avoid morning light.

For some, the amenities are extremely important. Why not find a place that has fitness facilities, a pool or a party room if you know that those amenities are a great part of your lifestyle.

Closet space, kitchen counter prep area and distance from couch to TV for people who love their big screens are important. There are just too many factors to consider, so write them all down. Fill your list out as much as possible. You’ll need to prioritize your wishlist, and you may or may not find that place that hits each and every item, but if you go looking with a very clear picture of what you want, chances are you’ll find what you’re looking for!

Visit lots of apartments and pull out your list to see how each measures up. With Renters Guide in hand you’ll find that perfect place. Our magazine and website, homeTRADER.ca, offer the best selection of available apartments as well as informative articles and advice, making it easy to make your move!

BOXING IT ALL UP without the headaches

moving

It’s no big secret moving can be stressful – from broken dishes to lost items. But there are a few things you can do to make the

whole process a little easier on the nerves.

Start by planning your moving day well in advance. Once you select your moving company, book your reservations two to four weeks before your scheduled move day to guarantee availability.

Next, it’s time to roll up those sleeves and begin boxing up your household or offi ce space. Choosing boxes to do this may not be as much of a no-brainer as you’d presume:

• Boxes of books get heavy fast so ensure to use only small boxes when it comes to these items. Apply this general rule to everything you’re packing: the heavier the item, the smaller the box.

• Emptying the closet can be an organizing nightmare. Use specifi c wardrobe boxes to simplify the process. To save space, clothes in drawers can be packed into suitcases.

• As tempting as it may be to pick up used cardboard boxes from the grocery store, don’t. You never know what little critter is hiding in the corner of food boxes – or if the box will be strong enough to support your possessions. In fact, don’t use used boxes in general; you don’t know how much weight they can handle or how much weight they’ve already handled.

By Dan Hopkins

Dan Hopkins is chief operating offi cer, Two Men and a Truck Canada. For more information visit the website at twomenandatruck.ca

Assign boxes to specifi c rooms. Avoid mixing items from different rooms in the same box – it can make for a frustrating unpacking process or a wild goose-chase if you’re looking for kitchen utensils in the living room box. Keep a record of what goes into which box so you can fi nd what you need instantly.

When it comes to large appliances, take a peek at the owner’s manuals to see if there are special instructions for moving.

Packing breakables requires the upmost care. Always stack dishes upwards and never use newsprint to wrap fi ne china as it can be messy to clean. Instead, choose protective packing paper or bubble wrap.

With these tips and a few deep breaths, you’re well on your way to a smooth-sailing move.

quicktips

Protect yourself from

online and smartphone fraudWith the increasing

popularity of smartphones and

social media sites, fraudsters are developing new ways to steal or trick consumers into revealing personal information through online channels.

Justin Hwang, associate vice president, Fraud Management, TD Canada Trust, offers his top tips on how Canadians can protect themselves from these emerging scams:

• Don’t give away too much on social media sites: Scammers use social media sites to search for personal details of their potential victims. They use this information to decipher passwords and answers to financial institutions’ security questions. Too often people use easy passwords such as their mother’s maiden name, pet’s name or birthday and this information may be readily available online.

• Watch out for malicious apps: Apps designed to steal your personal information do exist. Often these are disguised as games, funny videos or apps appearing to be from credible brands. Do your research; make sure anything you download is from a legitimate company or developer. For your security, TD Canada Trust has made its mobile app available for download directly on tdcanadatrust.com.

• Protect yourself from ‘Wi-Fi bandits’: Many smartphones/tablets/portable devices are set to automatically log on to wireless hot spots in public areas like hotel lobbies, cafés and airports. But if you’re on an unsecured network, fraudsters could try to hack into your laptop or cell phone to steal your online banking passwords, copy your contacts from email programs, or even download illegal files. Disable this feature on your device, and only join Wi-Fi networks that you trust.

More information about fraud prevention is available online at http://www.td.com/privacyandsecurity/protect_yourself.jsp. NC.

Enter Make Do Month. This is the month when you stretch everything a little farther so you spend a lot less. If you get invited to a party, you don’t rush out and buy something new, you get creative and shop your closet. And if you need a little something different, you shop a friend’s closet. Or hold a clothing exchange. What you don’t do is spend money.

When the weather is warm, it’s easy to do lots of free things. When it’s cold, entertainment gets more expensive. Sure there’s that great movie you’d love to take the family to for a night out of the house. For a family of four, you’re probably looking at $100 or more with popcorn and drinks. Recycle a movie you already own or do a movie swap with friends, add some home-made popcorn and a 12-pack of pop and you can probably do it for $10. Now that’s making do.

January is also a good month to experiment with a new routine as you make do. If you’re used to buying coffee every day, brew your own at home or work and save big-time. If you regularly go out for lunch, pack one from home for four out of every five days and not only will you drop those holiday pounds, you’ll be able to pay off that holiday debt.

finances

But what if you have family or friends whose birthday falls in January. You’ll have to buy something. No you don’t. You can give something of yourself instead of something purchased. Make their favorite cookies, offer to cook them a meal or a bunch of meals for the freezer for those extra busy workdays, or create a coupon for three nights of free babysitting. Maybe you’re a computer genius and can offer to do maintenance or repairs. Perhaps you’re a mechanic and can offer a tune-up. Substitute your energy for spending money.

After the buzz of the holidays you’ll no doubt be happy to stay home for the first couple of weeks. Then you may start feeling itchy. You’ve got to get out. You can feel the walls closing in. Time to hit that great new restaurant that just opened up, or head out to the clubs. Wait a minute. This is Make Do Month.

Call up a couple of friend and throw a pot-luck game night instead. See if you can do it at their house this time. Start a tradition of once a month game or poker nights and rotate from one friend’s home to another. No one says you can’t have fun in Make Do Month. You just can’t spend gobs of money.

Make Do Month is a conscious decision to stretch every dollar as far as it’ll go. Try it and see if just becoming conscious save you money. I’ll bet your pleasantly surprised.By Gail Vaz-Oxlade

If there’s any month when you’re most likely to wonder if all the bills will get paid it’s usually January. After the feverish rush of the holidays and all the unexpected expenses that popped up, no doubt things will be a little tight. Add

the extra cost of heating and the jump in “fresh” food prices and you’ll be looking for ways to trim back.

I COULDN’T LET 2013 BEGIN WITHOUT GIVING A SPECIAL NOD TO THIS HUGE CHEVRON TREND that has taken the décor world by storm. It is one of the most sought-after patterns and this interesting graphic statement is sure to continue into the new year. You can boldly introduce it into a room as an accent wall with some paint and carefully applied painter’s tape to create the pattern. Or if you want to show just a little chevron love, you can simply add some accents that either complement or contrast the colours in a room. Either way, it adds a pop of fun to your décor while remaining clean and sophisticated.

When decorating small spaces, you don’t necessarily have to go with pint-sized ❖

furniture. Just pare down the number of pieces.

Make sure there’s balance and create interest by drawing the eye to varying ❖

levels throughout the space. Multi-purpose pieces go a long way.

One of the quickest ways to change the look of a rental, aside from paint, is to ❖

change the lighting. Invest in new light fi xtures and take them with you when you leave.

When decorating on a budget, try to look at old items in a new way. A desk can ❖

become a buffet table, and who knows ,maybe an old door would make a great headboard!

Never underestimate the power of a coat of paint! Paint a tree stump in a bold ❖

hue to create a cool side table or stool.

Walk through a second-hand store with a mind to breathe new life into an old ❖

piece of furniture; try using two tones of your favourite colour.

To create a gallery wall you have to start with a commitment; your frames should ❖

either match, but vary in size or they can be mismatched but uniform in size. Oh, and make a choice; black and white or colour for the entire collection.

Collections are a starting point for your accent pieces and carry themes on in ❖

other ways. If you collect bird fi gurines, fi nd a ‘birdie’ pillow to complete the look.

We improved a kitchen for a budding chef by capping inexpensive bookshelves ❖

with a slab of granite we found in the sale section at one of our suppliers. Instant island!
