Welcome to Around Edmond this month, and

what a crazy month it has been!

In this issue, we are highlighting some

of the awesome new spring fashions from

some fantastic locally owned boutiques. These

boutiques really try hard to bring you something

new and unique, and in some cases, some really

great vintage pieces, as well.

A huge thanks to the guys from War Paint

Clothing in the Plaza District, Olya from InCase

boutique inside of Tangles Salon, Carrie from

Lush Fashion Lounge and especially Jennifer

from Funky Monkey on May Ave. for participating

in this seasons highlight for what’s new! And

Farmers Market for being so hospitable and

letting us in on a Sunday!

With spring on the mind, we decided to head

out to the trails at Hafer Park, and to our surprise,

it was packed! Apparently we weren’t the only

ones tired of winter and were out enjoying the

fresh air while trying to find a glimpse of spring.

The wide variety of age groups that were out at

the park and walking the trails is what really took

us back. From 3 to 90 was what we saw, and

this sealed it in our minds as being one of the

greatest assets the City of Edmond has to offer!

NorthstockThe fog rolled in across Gracelawn

Cemetery as evening fell. The forecast was for rain, but not until later. The headlights of the cars creeping down Danforth Rd. cut through the soup-like mist like knives. It was a stark contrast to the crystal-clear wall of sound to be found inside the arena-esque gymnasium at Edmond North High School on that particular Saturday night.

A dozen or so bands and side-acts played for over three hundred people inside North’s Siberian Gym, with musical styles ranging

from Bob Dylan-esque indie rock (Shoeless in Manhattan) to an instrumental-only act with a guitarist who could shred as easily as Jimi Hendrix (The Southern Cats) to a Coldplay cover band (Shasta). One band, an acoustic act called Downright Dandy, incorporated a fiddle, played by junior Laura Cunningham, as part of their sound.

Those in the audience were treated to a pleasant surprise when a couple of acts from UCO’s Academy of Contemporary Music took the stage and played sets. One of the bands did a convincing cover of Third Eye Blind’s “Semi-Charmed Life.”

As it was a true battle of the bands, whichever band raised the most money (this was BALTO, after all) went home the winner. This year, that honor went to The Asphalt Maintenance Project, a band led by Chris Lashley, a sophomore. The true winners of the night, of course, were the hundreds of kids who got to go to Victory Junction Camp in North Carolina because of events like Northstock, and really, all of BALTO Week. (Note: BALTO Week was the first of three

high school charities. Each school beat their initial goal; Edmond North with $228,225, Santa Fe with over $170,000 and Edmond Memorial with over $500,000.)The Toasters with The Last Slice and Violent Affair at The Conservatory

There are quite a few places to see a good punk show in the Metro; The Conservatory is one of them. I’ve been there a couple of times, and I can objectively say that each time I went upped the ante for the best time I’ve ever had.

This time, New York City ska act The

Toasters were set to play a show to a crowded hall, over 200 people crammed into this little building to see one of the most energetic concerts of the year. Trust me - you had to be there. It was one of those shows where not even the opening bands sucked. Speaking of the opening bands, the night started off with local hardcore punks Violent Affair ripping up the stage with about a dozen high-velocity songs, leaving not one moment to breathe in between. Their sound was somewhere in between The Casualties, Leftover Crack and Anti-Flag, which isn’t a bad sound in the slightest. The best songs were “Dead to Me,” and “F--- Racism,” by far.

Up next came Tulsa band The Last Slice and their pop-punk version of third-wave ska. This was where the party really took off. The whole pit skanked and danced to songs like “Y2K” and “Silver Box.” The best part was when the lead singer and drummer, Ethan Nickles, told us they were recording a live album - I swear the place flipped out. After The Last Slice left the stage, a longish intermission filled up by a three-piece lectronic(ish) band,

and everyone just kind of chilled out. The Toasters were up next, and we all wanted to conserve our energy for that show.

Finally, it was time. The Toasters jumped up on stage for the final show of their year-long tour, did their soundcheck, and jumped right into 2-Tone Army, one of their most famous songs. The show was a little over an hour long, and the whole place was rocking with the heavy bootstomps of punks, skinheads and mods dancing to the same awesome beat. When it was all over, we demanded an encore, and amazingly enough they gave us a new song! It was a great experience. I’ll definitely be going to The Conservatory in the future, especially to catch the Millions of Dead Cops show in May and the UK Subhumans in June.

I have tried just about every makeup on the

market from drug store makeup to expensive

department store makeup. After trying the

am really sold. The prices are mid range and

affordable, and the real surprise is how well it

EDMOND HIGH SCHOOLS RAISE NEARLY A MILLION DOLLARS FOR CHARITY

Edmond Memorial High School this year raised money for the Jimmy Everest Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders for kids with cancer, and absolutely broke their record and raised the bar for the three high schools during their annual week long fund raising events. Their goal was to raise approximately $275,000 via different activities throughout the week, and the $527,704.88 that they ended up raising was a record for the high schools around the area. Way to go Bulldogs, just amazing!

Edmond Sante Fe High School, during their Double Wolf Dare Week this year, raised money for the Make A Wish Foundation here in Oklahoma County. Their goal was to raise $115,000 for all 23 Make A Wish kids in Oklahoma County. What they did was amazing! They raised $160,035, far surpassing their goal and making sure every child in Oklahoma County will receive their wish from Make A Wish. To us, this was an extraordinary effort and the Wolves should be so proud!

Edmond North High School’s Balto Week, which stands for “Bring A Light To Others”, chose to give to Victory Junction, a North Carolina kids camp which is run by Kyle Petty and his wife in memory of their son Adam Petty. Victory Junction is a camp that gives kids with chronic medical conditions a chance to have a week off from being sick to just be a kid at a summer camp that is equipped for their specific needs. The Huskies raised $228,625 and will provide local metro kids with an opportunity of a lifetime. Way to go Huskies, your efforts were amazing!

And then there is The Common Thread. This is a local organization that all three high schools choose, each year, to give 5% of their fundraising efforts. This year’s common thread was The Coffee Creek Riding Center, which serves 155 local children with therapeutic riding.

A new Mrs. Oklahoma International was crowned on March 6, 2010 at the Stillwater Community Center in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Beautiful and accomplished women from around the state competed for the title that would, at the end of the night, be awarded to Stephanie Anello, Mrs. Tulsa 2010.

Three years ago, Stephanie’s goddaughter was diagnosed with Type I diabetes at the age of 4. Fueled with determination to raise funds for diabetes research with a goal of helping to end the disease, she held a golf tournament which has become an annual event. This year’s tournament will be held in April.

The Mrs. International Pageant celebrates the accomplishments of today’s married women. Stephanie has been married to her husband Tim for nine years and the couple has two children, Hannah and Jaxon.

Stephanie will go on to represent Oklahoma at the Mrs. International Pageant which is held annually in Chicago.

Two of the women who were vying for the title of Mrs. Oklahoma, were Amanda Pittenger, Mrs. Edmond and Melissa Bauman, Mrs. Oklahoma County. Both women reside in Edmond.

1. Tweetdeck Tweetdeck integrates multiple applications including Youtube, Flickr, FaceBook and Twitter accounts. Tweetdeck allows me to categorize who I follow allowing me to stay up to date on important people and what has their attention.

2. Ping.fm Ping allows me to ping multiple social media accounts and transmit the same data or message. I also have the ability to control which accounts I wish my message to be sent to.

3. SocialOomph I am able to schedule messages on both Twitter and FaceBook Fan pages allowing me to target my message to a specific audience while saving time and stress. This is especially handy when I am promoting an event or making an announcement.

4. Gist Gist is currently in beta and seeks to intergrate and upload all your contacts to one location from Salesforce, Twitter, FaceBook, LinkedIn, and your email.

5. Tungle Tungle is an online scheduling tool. I control the settings and who can view my calendar. It uploads your Outlook contacts and auto updates from Outlook to Tungle. This tool has been great when trying to connect with friends or business colleagues who also have a busy schedule.

6. NutshellMail Nutshell is a great tool for new social media users. It allows you to receive one email updating you on multiple social media accounts–FaceBook and Twitter saving you the time and stress of clogging up your email box.

Beginning 22 years ago, Mrs. International was developed to have higher standards than other pageant systems. The very first woman to wear the Mrs.International crown was Rhonda Berglan of Oklahoma. The focus behind Mrs. Oklahoma International is to showcase women 21 to 56 years old, married at least six months and a resident of the state. Each contestant competes in Interview Competition, which is valued for 50% of her overall score, Evening Gown, valued for 25% and Fitness Wear for 25%. Each contestant has the opportunity to select a platform of her choice that she spends the year promoting. Husbands are a direct part of the show, escorting their wives in the Evening Gown competition, and the husband crowns his wife titleholder.

Before we give you this amazing recipe, we should tell you we have 3 different chocolate tastes here in our family of four! Chris, who is not a chocolate lover says this is probably the best chocolate cake he’s ever had! Trevor’s taste is different, as he loves sweets, but not things that are too sweet. And Jeff’s all about anything chocolate, no matter which end of the sweet scale it’s on. My taste, well, I have loved anything chocolate since birth, but that’s a whole other story.

The frosting took about 10 mins. max to make, due to chopping up the baking chocolate and then letting it set in the fridge, another 2 hours or so. The consistency is fantastic and we really liked the matte finish it came out with. If you like thick layers of chocolate between your layers, you might want to double the frosting recipe, as our inner layers were frosted thinly to medium thin.

The cake is very easy to assemble and the consistency is very moist and has a really wonderful, unique flavor due to the sour cream. Because of the Stout, it’s obviously for St. Patrick’s Day, however the flavor makes it great for anytime of year, in our opinion!

CHOCOLATE STOUT CAKE by Christa Carretero aka Cooking Girl

Ingredients2 cups stout (such as Guinness)2 cups (4 sticks) unsalted butter1 1/2 cups unsweetened cocoa powder

(preferably Dutch-process)4 cups all purpose flour4 cups sugar1 tablespoon baking soda1 1/2 teaspoons salt4 large eggs1 1/3 cups sour creamIngredients for Icing2 cups whipping cream1 pound bittersweet (not unsweetened) or

semisweet chocolate, choppedpreparationDirections For cake:Preheat oven to 350°F. Butter three 8-inch

round cake pans with 2-inch-high sides. Line with parchment paper. Butter paper. Bring 2 cups stout and 2 cups butter to simmer in heavy large

saucepan over medium heat. Add cocoa powder and whisk until mixture is smooth. Cool slightly.

Whisk flour, sugar, baking soda, and 1 1/2 teaspoons salt in large bowl to blend. Using electric mixer, beat eggs and sour cream in another large bowl to blend. Add stout-chocolate mixture to egg mixture and beat just to combine. Add flour mixture and beat briefly on slow speed. Using rubber spatula, fold batter until completely combined. Divide batter equally among prepared pans. Bake cakes until tester inserted into center of cakes comes out clean, about 35 minutes. Transfer cakes to rack; cool 10 minutes. Turn cakes out onto rack and cool completely.

Directions For icing:Bring cream to simmer in heavy medium

saucepan. Remove from heat. Add chopped chocolate and whisk until melted and smooth. Refrigerate until icing is spreadable, stirring frequently, about 2 hours.

Place 1 cake layer on plate. Spread 2/3 cup icing over. Top with second cake layer. Spread 2/3 cup icing over. Top with third cake layer. Spread remaining icing over top and sides of cake.

Cody Anderson, owner of WhichWich Superior Sandwiches, on Bryant just off of 2nd Street, is a part of the newer sector of young business professionals, especially when it comes to marketing his business. There were a number of ways for Cody to market his business. He wanted connect with his customers directly, in some new school ways, as well as the oldfashioned ways. He loves what he does and is interested in having fun while promoting his business.

What makes Cody unusual in his use of social marketing is that he uses Twitter, exclusively, to

answer questions and to let people know about upcoming specials. But what we found about Cody is his desire to get out there and connect personally, whether you find him talking with his customers at his restaurant or riding around anywhere in Edmond on his Segway. That’s right, a Segway. He is one of the few business professionals we know of that still believes in personal contact with his customers. He’s the only one we know that does it on a Segway.

On a nice day, you can find Cody cruising around town, talking with people and handing out punch cards & coupons and really just spreading a bit of good cheer. He prides himself on these forms of marketing and making long standing relationships with his customers. Cody’s mix of new school & old school marketing really seems to be working out well for him. If you happen to see a guy cruising around on a Segway at UCO or around 2nd & Bryant, it’s definitely Cody, so be sure to stop and say hi. Who’s ready for springtime? I know that I am and there are

some chores that we must tend to this month if we want our

2010 gardening experience to be successful.

1. Prepare your lawn mower; install clean filters.

2. Cultivate annual flower beds to destroy winter

weeds.

3. Apply organic mulch to control weeds in beds.

4. Remove excessive thatch from warm season lawns.

Dethatching should precede crabgrass control treatment.

5. March is the second best time to seed cool season

grasses; however, fall is the best time to plant.

6. Cool season lawns may be fertilized now. Usually,

four applications of fertilizer are required. March, May,

October, and November are the best times.

7. Broadleaf weeds can easily be controlled in cool

season lawns at this time with broad leaf herbicides.

8. Begin mowing cool season grasses at 1 ? to 3 ?

inches high.

9. Prune Roses just before growth starts and begin

a regular disease spray program as the foliage appears.

Roses were badly damaged by the frigid temperatures

this winter.

10. Divide and replant summer and fall blooming

perennials. Cut back old liriope and other ornamental

foliage.

Again, these are the most important things we can do to

prepare for a successful gardening experience this season.

Today’s brides have so much pressure and

advice is being given to them from movies,

reality TV shows and bridal books, but what

will help a bride is knowing that she can trust

the vendors she hires. In being a Wedding

Planner, I get the opportunity to work with

lots of talented and professional Oklahoma

vendors. My goal in writing this article each

month is help take some of that stress away

from brides.

On the wedding day, the bride is the

“princess” and she needs to feel like a

beautiful Princess…this is a day she has

dreamed about since she was a little girl. The

bride wants to have everything perfect, and

that includes how she looks from her couture

gown to hair and make-up. The bride’s make-

up plays an important part on how she looks

and feels.

If you’re worried that you’ll be so busy

on your wedding day or feel nervous that

you won’t be able to concentrate and want

to look your best for your wedding, why not

look into hiring a professional make-up artist

or aesthetician. Aesthetician is someone

who is versed in the theory of beauty and

artistic expression; they are also skilled in

giving facials and other beauty treatments.

Most professional make-up artist are licensed

Aesthetician. Most aesthetician will schedule

a trial run for your make-up, so that you will

have no surprises on how your make-up

will look on your wedding day. You can also

hire them for engagement photos or bridal

portraits. If your skin needs a day of beauty

take time to also schedule a facial…before

the wedding day.

When you meet with your make-up artist

for the first time, bring photos of how you

want to look. Ask questions to see if your

make-up artist has experience in weddings

and photos, because you will be taking lots

of photos. Your make-up artist or aesthetician

is a professional and they should guide you,

but you will need to communicate the look

you want and don’t let them talk you into

something you will hate on your wedding

day. Make-up artist should be able to show

you a portfolio of their work, and it should be

impressive, because they are artist. Ask them

their timelines, will they be with you all day,

or just do your make-up before your wedding.

Last, ask for references so that you can talk

to other brides and see if they enjoyed hiring

them for their wedding.

The weather here in Oklahoma isn’t always the best. With all

the cool weather and snow this year I thought we should take

advantage of the sunny and nice days we do have. Working

outside is a great way to mix up your daily routines. There are

many different ways to be active outside instead of running on a

treadmill or lifting dumbbells. Next time its nice outside try going

for a run or playing basketball with the neighbors, or even doing

a little yard work. These are all ways you can be active and burn

calories. For a more advance workout you can find that many parks

have workout stations. When I was younger we had only pushups

bars and pull-up bars outside. Some places like Mich and Hafer

Parks have full blown workout equipment you can use.

First off, I have to say that I’m a fan of the website thelostogle.com. They’re a creative, sarcastic and funny bunch that likes to poke fun at just about everything in Oklahoma. They serve as a reminder that you shouldn’t take yourselves too seriously.

In one of their latest features titled “Why Edmond Sucks” they took aim at our fair city and pointed out all the reasons they feel our town sucks. As well, they invited their readers to to do the same. While some of their gripes and those of their readers were kind of childish and lame, they did bring up some good points.

Instead of getting all offended and lashing out in retort, I felt it best to address their complaints one by one drawing from my own personal experiences since moving here to Edmond five years ago. Oh and don’t feel that the guys at the Lost Ogle are just picking on Edmond, because they’re not. They are going city by city explaining why they all suck.

REASONS THE LOST OGLE THINKS EDMOND SUCKS1. The Purina Dog Food factory stinks up part of the town.

I always wondered what that “burnt cheese” odor was and now it makes sense—it’s coming from the Purina Plant. I’ve only caught a whiff of it a couple times and it was pretty bad. This does seem to be an equal opportunity offender too. Depending on the

prevailing winds, no part of town is safe from the pungent puppy chow. Gonna have to give the Lost Ogle the nod on this one.

2. Edmond residents are pompous and arrogant.

I honestly don’t know why Edmond gets such a bad rap in the “snob” department. Before we even moved here everyone I knew in Oklahoma said Edmond was snobby. It’s not like we knew a lot of people in this state, but they were pretty spread out; one lived in Elk

City, one in Moore and one in Enid and they all shared the same vibe of Edmond. However, in the five years we’ve lived here I have yet to encounter any snobby people. We have found everyone we’ve come in contact with here to be very friendly.

If you want to find some real snobs, try living in California for a while. For that matter, I think anywhere you go there’s the potential for snobbery. And if it does exist in Edmond, we just haven’t encountered it yet.

3. City ordinances that are over the top.I’m not sure I would call Edmond’s City

ordinances “over the top,” but then again I’ve never tried to build something here like a building or apartments. I do have a friend in property management who has had many dealings with the City and has echoed the sentiment that the City does place restrictions on how buildings look. And there was the much publicized battle between the City and Falcone’s restaurant—the owners wanted to put an Italian flag colored awning up and the City wouldn’t let them, so they moved their restaurant out of the city.

While I can see the merits of both parties arguments I can appreciate that, at the very least, the City planners have some vision of how they want the city to look. Most cities don’t go that far and lack any vision for the future and how the town is percieved. But it seems the City Council here takes pride

in how they manage things and that’s a lot better than a complacent City Council.

On a lighter note: I did go through the City Ordinances and found that it is illegal to play pool in any pool hall if you are under 18. Does Edmond even have a pool hall? And it’s unlawful for a woman to enter a bar unescorted. However, that one was repealed way back in 1985. So, drink up ladies!

4. Too many stay at home moms driving hummers, talking on the phone while

applying makeup.I put this one to the test and took a

drive one Saturday in search of the dreaded woman-SUV-cell phone menace. I drove to all the shopping hotspots like 15th and Bryant, 2nd and Bryant, downtown and up and down Danforth. I saw two Hummers, both driven by men, but not a single road-clipper piloted by a woman on a cell phone. After two hours of searching I finally decided to call it quits and headed home. As I pulled up to Danforth and Santa Fe, there it was; a white Escalade driven by a woman, and yes, she was talking on her cell phone. True story. While sitting there next to her in my F250 I thought, ‘how ironic.’ So I picked up my cell phone and called Sherri to tell her I found one! Just one.

5. Too many stoplights downtown on Broadway.

True, but Broadway through downtown is meant to be a pedestrian area. The speed limits downtown are lower as well to ensure the safety of those shopping on foot. If you’re in a hurry, steer clear of Broadway as it passes through downtown.

6. Narrow traffic lanes & intersections that don’t line up.

This one is a serious cause for concern. Not that our traffic lanes are too narrow—I actually think Norman takes that prize—but some of our intersections don’t line up. In

particular, the intersection of Danforth and Santa Fe. Making a left turn there is a scary proposition. Since the turn lanes don’t line up the cars in the opposite turn lane make a huge blind spot. You almost feel like you have to brace yourself for impact whenever you fully commit to making the turn there. And it doesn’t help when you notice the debris on the ground from the unfortunate ones who didn’t make it. It might be worth it for the city to make that intersection “turn on signal only.”

7. Creepy downtown artwork.I’ve never lived in a city that has invested

so much in artwork to be displayed on the city streets to be enjoyed by all. I think that is one of Edmond’s many charms. Most of the sculptures and statues are creative, fun and endearing. However, there are a couple out there that might be classified as a little on the creepy side. But you can be the judge of that

because art is subjective.

8. There’s nothing to do in Edmond.This complaint gets the big fail. One of the

main reason we picked Edmond was because of how active the community is. With all the parks and trails and organized sports there’s no reason to ever be bored here. There’s something for everyone in Edmond and the City has worked very hard and pooled a lot of resources to make it that way. We even have a skate park here in town.

Besides the parks, we have Lake Arcadia,

Pelican Bay, Arctic Edge and a host of other activities people can get involved in. Anyone who says there’s nothing to do here in Edmond obviously can’t pull themselves away from the Xbox long enough to go outside and look around.

9. The Cops are bored and like to pull over teenagers for curfew violations.

I asked my teenaged son Trevor if this was true, do the police really like to harass the teenagers here in Edmond?

He said “Yes they do. My friend got pulled over for going 6 miles per hour over the speed limit and another one got pulled over for not wearing his seat belt.”

“So,” I asked, “one friend got pulled over for speeding and another for breaking the seat belt law, right?”

“Yes.”I would hardly call that harassment, more

like they’re just doing their job. Edmond is one

of the safest communities in the country and thanks to a high level of police presence it stays that way.

10. Lack of bars or a nightlife.Since Edmond is technically a college

town it is surprising that there isn’t very much of a nightlife here. We do have the UCO Jazz Lab and that’s great if you like Jazz. But

without a more youthful nightlife and college scene it leaves the appearance that the town rolls it up when the street lights come on.

11. Downtown Broadway is just for old people.

Young people like antiques too, right?

Whatever the perception is of Edmond outside the city limits, we love it here. It’s a safe, quiet and active community with great schools. I can’t think of a better place to raise a family. Don’t Norman My Edmond!

Now that things are finally starting to warm up it’s the perfect time to hit the trails. That’s exactly what we did between Snowmageddon I and II and we were quite surprised to find that a lot of other Edmondites had the same idea. It’s really refreshing to see a large portion of the residents out and enjoying the amenities the city provides. And on the trail system here the city spared no expense.

In all there are 7 different trail systems within Edmond, not including Lake Arcadia. That’s a huge investment and commitment by the city. And we’re not talking about random dirt paths here either. The trails are paved, lined with benches and they even have

workout stations.On our stroll through the Hafer Park trails

we saw all walks of life out and enjoying the fresh air. We saw avid runners, businessmen, couples, older people and young people alike.

If you have never visited any of the trails here in town you really should give them a try. Get out there and take in some fresh air and scenery, because every now and then you really do need to stop and smell the daisy’s.

PEAKS AND VALLEYSBy Chris Hultner

As it is with any endeavor, the weight loss battle has its own peaks and valleys. To be

perfectly honest, right now I’m in a valley. Thankfully i haven’t gained any weight back, but i

haven’t been losing any either.

Lots of things factor into getting off track. For one, life just has a way of getting in the

way. You get busy at work. Family issues arise. Schedules change. Pretty soon eating right

and working out take a back seat. I have been experiencing all of the above. In times like

this you just need to take a step back and regroup.

On top of everything else my training schedule with Chris has been interupted a bit.

But Chris has a good excuse—he and his wife Mimi just had their first baby, a little boy they

named Kingston. Congratulations to them! Now Chris finally know’s what sleep deprivation

is like, as the rest of us do. (haha) I couldn’t be happier for the three of them. They make a

great family.

As Spring starts to kick it in high gear here, I plan to do the same by being more

disciplined in my daily routine. Since I haven’t been packing on the pounds, losing more

weight shouldn’t be a problem with a few minor changes in the routine.

It’s like everything else in life—you only get out of it what you put into it. It’s time to turn

it up!
