OKC Ballet plans ‘yellow brick’ encore for 40th anniversary finale

To cap its 40th anniversary season, the Oklahoma City Ballet will present a special encore production of “The Wizard of Oz,” April 20-22 at the Civic Center Music Hall, 201 N. Walker Ave.

The ballet is based on “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,” a classic children’s novel by author L. Frank Baum which has become one of the best-known stories in American popular culture. The story chronicles the adventures of a young girl named Dorothy Gale in the Land of Oz, after being swept away from her Kansas farm home in a storm.

“We wanted to conclude this milestone season with an exciting, colorful production that people would want to experience with their children,” Executive Director John Krasno said. “With so many people requesting we bring the yellow brick road back for an encore performance, we felt strongly that this was a fun way to thank the city for their ongoing support.”

Performances are scheduled for 8 p.m. on Friday, April 20 and Saturday, April 21, and 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 22.

The production will feature live orchestral music by The Oklahoma City Philharmonic, and flying effects and a three-dimensional tornado provided by Las Vegas-based ZFX Flying Effects.

Total running time is two hours with a 15-minute intermission.

>>> In Business

I was 14 years old when I got fired from my first job.

Sadly, I wasn’t too disappointed because I knew it was

coming. The problem stemmed from my affixation to avoid

work. I was a bit naive, young, and certainly immature.

The job was working as a stocker in a small convenience

store near my home. In hindsight, it was a pretty great gig,

yet I failed to fully appreciate its beauty. My tasks were

simple: I was supposed to show up at 4 p.m., stock shelves,

check supplies, clean aisles, and prepare the store for the

next day. The store closed about 8, so there really wasn’t too

much extra involved, and I often waited for my co-worker

to finish the day’s accounting. The managers were flexible,

the pay was mediocre, and I should have been in heaven.

My problem though wasn’t the fact that I didn’t like the

job, but rather that I couldn’t be counted on to perform when

required. In fact, sometimes I’d shirk my responsibilities

in favor of some “greater” adventure. The “back-breaker”

came when I traded my shift to go see the original Batman

movie starring Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson. Sure,

it was important then, but my decision created grave

consequences later.

After that, my boss (rightly) separated our relationship.

In her kind words, she told me that she’d rather just pay my

fill-in than me. I remember protesting a little, but sadly, I

knew in my heart “the truth hurts.”

The memories and emotions of that experience stuck

with me through the years, and in some ways have created

the person I am. Now, I’m not perfect, nor do I claim to be,

but I try to manifest integrity in my life.

One of the fundamental ways to generate or exude

integrity is to become a dependable type of person, and to

make sure people know they can count on you to perform.

Recently, I got involved in a matter with several other

people where we each had particular assignments. I suppose

my expectations of those assignments and responsibilities

were too different, since the lion’s share of completing the

job soon fell to me. The partners, who touted themselves as

“experts,” soon vanished, only to sporadically appear in a

whirlwind of “help” when guilt or self-nagging reared its

head. “We” completed the assignment, but the experience

affirmed the adage about doing it right yourself.

Unfortunately, like my 14 year-old-self, too many

people commit to assignments they cannot complete, or

only half-heartedly handle. We see countless examples in

our business, social, and personal relationships; and If we

listen, we’ll also hear the excuses for why the task didn’t

get done.

I once read the account of an individual whose verbal

commitment created substantial trust concerning the man’s

dependability. I filed the story away as a footnote to the

power of an oath - quite simply, we do as we say and other’s

fears about us fade away.

How much more would our businesses thrive, or our

personal lives be enriched, if we had a substantial number of

people who could be depended on to perform? We gripe and

bemoan the fact that we have contracts and other binding

agreements, but the simple fact is that these would not exist

if everyone could be depended on to perform as agreed.

Dependability then isn’t just a single, obscure word. True

dependability is an attitude, a mindset, and most importantly,

an enviable character trait. My goal is to become less like

my 14 year-old self, and more like the man whose friends

trusted greatly because of his dependable nature.

With a husband, 2 teenage boys & 3 Labradors, it was obvious to me, 8 years ago, that leather couches were in our future. For years, I had to clean our fabric furniture with our little green machine, each time the season changed. I didn’t mind, as I have a slight allergy to our dogs and it was always nice to have fresh furniture. We purchased our couches knowing that it would require different upkeep, and honestly just cleaning them with leather cleaner each month has been much easier than my previous fabric couch upkeep.

Fast forward to current day and the magic of the Internet. I saw a blog where a family with 3 boys had gone to a shoe repair store to ask what they could do to refresh their leather couches, as they were still in good shape,

How to Spruce Up Your Leather CouchBy Sherri Hultner

just scratched up from daily living. The shoe repairman quickly answered “shoe polish”. The blog was short, mostly pictorial, and I must admit I thought no way would that work.

I took brown Kiwi shoe polish and applied it generously across the middle cushion and waited 3 minutes. Then I buffed it and went over it with a white towel until there was no color, so it wouldn’t get on anyone’s clothes. As you can see, and after 3 go rounds, it worked!!!

And, taking it one step further, I wondered what would happen when you applied leather cleaner and if it would become a huge mess with the shoe polish... Nope, no mess at all! Bring on the spring!

How to Update Your ThermostatBy Chris Hultner

One of the easiest and most cost effective upgrades you make to your house is relacing your old thermostat with a new programmable unit. This is especially relevant for people with homes older than 10 years. We bought a programmable thermostat at Lowes for $29.95 and it only took 15 minutes to install. Great way to save for the summertime, we already see a difference!

Once you have the power turned off you can remove your pld thermostat from the wall. Then disconnect the wires and lable them by the corrosponding letter by the screw.

You will find the labels in the packaging for the new thermostat. It’s important that you label the wires correctly.

Now you’re ready to install the baseplate with the supplied hardware, a couple of screws.

Next, slide the wires into their corrosponding lettered hole and screw them down.

Now you’re ready to snap on the faceplate and turn the power back on. That’s all there is to it.

Boil water & sugar to prepare a simple syrup. Stir until sugar incorporates with the water or for about 15 mins., then let cool.

In a seperate bowl, combine juice concentrates and freshly squeezed juices along with the Vodka. Once the syrup has cooled, add the juice vodka to the syrup, stir and transfer to an air tight container to freeze. Prepare a day or two in advance so that the slush can incorporate all the flavors more thoroughly.

When ready to serve, fill half the glass with slush and half the glass with Jelly Belly Lemon Drop Soda and enjoy! Can be made non alcoholic, for a refreshing treat!

>>> My Yard

You notice your neighbors’ lawns and gardens, you may notice some flowerbeds look more cohesive than others.

The biggest difference that I see, as a professional, are the properties that started with a design and those that had plants randomly bought and planted each year.

The well-designed landscapes have plants that look healthy; they have varied heights and textures and a timed seasonal blooming schedule. This combination is a winning formula every time.

When I first step out of my truck for a new client’s design consultation, I start evaluating the property. The first thing that comes to mind is the direction the house sits, how dense the neighborhood is and what existing elements are thriving.

All of these factors go into the plant selection process. The direction the house sits speaks to sun exposure with

north and east being shady positions and west and south being high-sun exposure areas. With that in mind, you can combine the beds with some shade and some sun.

In this part of Oklahoma, all shade plants and part-shade plants are to be planted in areas that only receive morning light to about noon each day because of the extreme heat that we experience here in the summer months.

If your beds get sun exposure in the afternoon, then it’s best to go with full sun plants.

The second thing that comes into play is wind exposure. The denseness of your neighborhood often determines how windy your beds are. The plants selected on the south side of a property should also be able to tolerate wind exposure.

Lastly, I like to consider what elements are doing well

in the areas already. By using plants that have similar needs to the ones that are healthy and thriving in the beds already you have means a greater chance of success.

Once you have an understanding of the group of plants that you need to work with to have a healthy garden, adding varied height and texture is next. Consider both evergreen and deciduous trees and shrubs. By having a combination of both, you can develop texture and height to what is considered the backbone to your design. Repeating and/or grouping these elements help with design and symmetry.

As you see in the pictures of the final design, I choose to repeat three or four of the same bush under a window. I then framed the outside of the window with two repeating elements. This not only plays to the flow of the design, but also to the architecture of the home.WHEN DESIGNING YOUR BEDS, THINK OF COST.

One cost efficient way to plant is to use perennials in a timed seasonal blooming pattern. The cost of planting annuals biyearly can get expensive and planting them can be time consuming.

So I often opt for perennial heavy beds to save money for my clients in the long run. Most tags on the plant will tell you what time of year that species blooms, so it would be easy to plant three early-spring blooming perennials and, later, three late-spring blooming perennials. Repeat this same planting pattern with early summer and late summer perennials. Simply by planting a selection of blooming perennials, your garden can have a showstopper almost all year long.

By knowing your property, varying the type of plants

If you are new to the area, the Dallas Arboreteum is 3 1/2 hours south of Edmond and on the list of the Top 14 Places in the World to See Spring Flowers according to MSN. This year the blooms of 500,000 spring bulbs, including daffodils, tulips, Dutch Iris and hyacinth made an amazing showing. Along with these amazing once a season treats, were the blooms of 6,000 azaleas, 100,000 pansies, violas, poppies and other springtime annuals and perrenials.

If you didn’t make it in time for their 28th annual explosion of color, plan a visit anyway for April or May, as it is always an amazing place to step away from daily living and enjoy some time outdoors! Be sure to mark you calendar for next year, though, as this is one of the most beautiful spots in our area during March!!!

This is one of the most beautiful gardens at the Dallas Arboreteum, and last August we got to witness a wedding take place at the base of the statue. It is serene, cozy with its closed to the world feeling, and just stunning with all of the manicured shrubbery.
