For this article, I have chosen a question-response format. Here are my questions to Jim Herbst, and his answers. Question #1: What got you interested in locksmith work? When I was a kid, I used to take old keys and file them down to fit locks and doors. And Also picked locks.

Question #2: What education did you pursue to help you? Took classes of basic lock-smithing, Intermediate locksmithing, understanding electronic hardware, Ruther-ford controls, KABA Peaks Classic and Preferred certification, Von Duprin Intro to Electromechanical Products and Wiring, Large Format Interchangeable Core, continuing education. A 3rd year member PAC. KABA e-plex 5000 series train-

ing, Volunteered my time with the Fellowship of Christian Locksmiths. I also did work with Nelson Obryan and Danny Meggison.

Question #3: Are you mobile or have a shop? Mobile

Question #4: Do you have a particular phase of your work you like the most and what makes it appealing? I would like to get into more commercial.

Question #5: Where did you grow up (i.e. area, town, schools attended)? Ypsilanti Michigan, Willow Run.

Question #6: Have you been in any other kind of occupation? If so, tell us something about it. I was in the pizza business for 20 years. I have my Serv-Safe certification, my State of Michigan Department of Agri-culture Food Service Sanitation Management certification. I also have a real Estate license and took a course in resi-dential wiring, and basic home inspecting. Also have my CDL that I passed with a 97% GPA, and Perfect atten-dance. And also an NRA certified instructor for Personal Protection in the home Courses, to teach people what they need to know to get their CPL/CCW. Question #7: Do you have any hobbies? Classic Cars

I remember in elementary School when we came back in the fall we often were asked by our teacher to write a paper about our experiences over summer vacation. I would like to share with you a little about my summer vacation. This summer my family and I traveled to Colorado. I would like to mention at this time that I got all four tickets essentially for free. Any purchases I make through my business, I put through my credit card which tallies up free airline miles. I buy as much as possible on my credit card from whoever accepts it. We have traveled for years this way. Getting back to Colorado, we spent time in Denver, Snowmass,

Aspen, Colorado Springs Buena Vista and Hartsel. If you have never visited Colorado, it is a “must visit” state. In Snowmass, I was able to visit a fellow locksmith at his shop. Joe is the owner of The Village Lock-smith. Being a locksmith in the mountains of Colorado is quite different than our experiences in Michigan. Joe does a lot of automotive service in the mountains. Aspen and Snowmass have quite the draw of tourists because of the fantastic skiing and beautiful mountain scenery. Many people fly in and rent vehicles. Keys get lost in the snow at ski resorts and in the mountains due to hiking, mountain biking, climbing, etc. Joe told me that a $100.00 service call is not unusual because of the distance and sometimes the difficulty getting to a job site in the mountains. A four wheel drive vehicle is a “must” in the Rocky Mountains. Joe told me that he recently had a bad experience driving. In his new service vehicle, one month old, he hit a boulder in the road. By the time he was able to pull over, it was too late. His oil pan was damaged and the engine seized. You see, it’s not like Michigan, a boulder can roll down a slope unexpectedly and the road you are on may not have a shoulder. Often there is the road, a guard rail and a 1,000 foot, or more, drop off. One of the news stories in the local paper mentioned about the problem with lever locks on new resi-dential construction. The black bears in the area were finding it very easy to operate the lever locksets and enter the new construction sites. As you can imagine, the bears paw can push down a lever handle with much ease. The newspaper reported that a new code may be adopted to return to knob locks on all outside doors as was the standard in the past. Bears can’t turn knobs easily. The bears also seem to play havoc with sliding patio doors. They have learned to slide unlocked patio doors with their paws. All they are looking for is food. Getting back to Joe at The Village Locksmith, his business was doing well. He is the only locksmith shop for miles around. Joe does a lot of safe deliveries and recommends a stair climbing dolly (hand truck) if you are going to do a lot of safe work. We spoke for a short time and he had to run on a call. I find it quite interesting how the locksmith business varies in different parts of the country. Good Luck to you Joe and hope you get that service vehicle back soon!
