generation of Chefs for our
industry. With our culinary
expertise, passion for creative
and logistical distinction,
coupled with our dedication
to providing extraordinary
customer service, we continue
to be acknowledged by our

Australian market. It is vital that
young people are given the
opportunity to undertake an
apprenticeship, and the student
work placement program is a
great way for students to get
their foot in the door.
Have you ever employed students? Most of our apprentices are
students who have completed
a Cert. II in Hospitality in High
Schools and have begun their
career journey through a work
placement. With 14 commercial
kitchens across all major
Australian cities, we employ over
4,000 staff and produce over 42
million meals each year. There
are always opportunities for
students with a passion for our
industry to gain employment
across the country.
What are the benefits of hosting? It is part of DNATA catering
to mentor and support our
community to provide high
standard of skills and culinary
knowledge to the students. The
program gives the business an
opportunity to trial prospective
apprentices from schools
right across Sydney and saves
time in the recruitment and
interviewing process. Students
also get an opportunity
through work placement to see
how the industry works and
can help them with their future
career decisions.

he data collected
from students that
completed the
CareerHQ indicated that two of
the most popular industries for
students were the Sports and
Medical industries.
A recent study carried
out by ABS, Deloitte Access
Economics found that these
two industries are predicted
to be amongst the five fastest
growing occupations from
2018 – 2030. Australia’s
affluence will drive an increase
of 46% in sports and fitness
workers by 2030, so there will
GROWTH CAREERS 2018-2030INSIGHT
be a need for young people
to gain qualifications in this
industry. Identifying growing
industry trends is vital to ensure
the economic growth and
prosperity of Australia, and
students can see that there
will be a future career pathway
for them and can begin the
qualification process now.
With the decline of the
car manufacturing industry
in Australia, many former
automotive workers have
successfully transitioned
into roles with small,
high-tech firms like drone
manufacturers. Research
found that car manufacturers
had qualifications that could
be used in other industries
such as manufacturing,
health care, warehousing and
logistics. These workers had
transferable skills that enabled
them to undertake a new
career pathway later in life, and
these skills will be extremely
important for workers to have
in the future, as technology and
industries continue to merge.
It’s important for young people
today, to gain those essential
skills for the future to allow
them to develop and change
careers with ease.
Preparing for the future
means that all Australian
workers will have to refresh
their skills, young and old.
On-the-job learning needs to
be available to more people
and needs to be delivered
in a much better way, with
more industries engaging
with schools and more large
corporate companies offering
placement opportunities.
This is a cheaper and more
relevant way than relying just
on academic qualifications and
pathways. The two pathways
of education and job training
can compliment each other
and provide the necessary skills
to ensure an intelligent and
adaptive future workforce.

GOOD FOOD AND WINE SHOWCASE STUDY
he Good Food &
Wine Show took
place in June at the
International Convention Centre
(ICC) in Sydney. Seven of our
work placement students were
lucky enough to be involved,
allowing them to put their
Tourism studies into practice.
The students met the Senior
Operations Manager, Darren
Loewy, on the day prior to the
event ready to bump-in for the
action-packed 3-day event.
From unpacking glassware,
preparing merchandise for sale
and setting up exhibitor stations,
the students were able to see
and be involved with the setup
of a large-scale event which was
attended by over 32,000 visitors
across the 3 days!
During the event each
student was allocated an area
to work between the Knife
Skills theatre, ‘Ask Me’ roaming
information and Masterclass
ushers, they were able to gain
hands-on experience across a
variety of aspects involved in
event management.
Work placement students
through SSBEN have been
offered opportunities to
participate in this fantastic
event for the past 3 years. We
asked Darren Loewy why they
like to host students. He finds
that having extra volunteers
to assist is extremely helpful
in the preparation and smooth
running of the event, and
they would happily take more
students if they are interested.
Students are insured and
are unpaid whilst on work
placement which is also
attractive to an employer. Being
able to offer the experience
of such a big and busy event
to high school students is a
great way for them to see
what the events business is all
about from setup, the event
proceedings, to pack down.
We would like to thank
Darren for all the time and
support he provides the
students during his incredibly
busy week, and we look
forward to working with the
Good Food and Wine team
again next year!
SSBEN took a backstage tour to see what our students were up to, meet the event organisers and share in a little Celebrity Chef spotting!
