Editors – Bradford & Lynne Walters Volume 17 – Issue 7 July 2010 t’s hard to think that July means we are more than halfway through the year. The weather is just now starting to be good for flying except for the high humidity and occasional midday thunderstorm. I’m not sure why some pilots have a tendency to not do a thorough preflight. Is it the heat of the day or just being too anxious to get up in the air and start flying, that they either miss or overlook the proper configuration of their aircraft? Three times in the past week, I have found reversed ailerons and elevators after the student said the aircraft was ready to go flying. One incident resulted in a crash by a seasoned instructor. The last thing any of us wants to do is to crash ours, or a student’s, aircraft. Let’s remember to slow down and think about what we are looking for and what needs to be checked. Our Club Picnic is just around the corner on August 15 th . We will be discussing more on the picnic during this month’s meeting. This month we will start donating to the St Thomas of Villanova food closet. This will be a monthly on-going donation to the closet and not a one time deal as some have asked me. Some suggestions for what to bring: cereal, canned meat (small ham, beef, etc), canned vagetables, canned spaghetti, jelly, saltines, macaroni & cheese. See the list of items on Page 5 of this newsletter. From a dream to a reality, come see and hear how the model of the F7F was built by Rudy Krolopp and Bob Davit. The airplane will be brought to the meeting this month before its maiden flight. If you want to see a true work of art and craftsmanship, don’t miss this meeting. The name of the plane is the Heinkel HE162. Larry Bochenko was the first to answer it correctly and willreceive a free raffle ticket at this month’s meeting. Dan Deitemeyer also answered correctly. This aircraftwas designed, built and flown in just 10 weeks, between October and December of 1944. It was constructed ofwooden wings, metal fuselage, and a metal/wood tailplane and was powered by a turbojet. There were fewerthan 4000 of them made. The wing span was only 23’7” and the length was 29’8”. It had a maximum speed of562 mph and a service ceiling of 39,400 ft. Its armament was two 20mm MG151 cannons. It officially enteredservice in January of 1945. See picture below.
JULY’S NAME THAT PLANEThis plane was the first US bomber built with a tail gunner’s position. It was powered by twin Wright Cyclone R-2600 engines. It had a maximum speed of 282 mph with a wingspan of 92 feet and was 58 feet 4 inches long.Flight trials soon revealed less than inspiring performance figures. It was quickly passed over and only 38 ofthem were eventually delivered. Send all responses to Bradford Walters at [email protected].

Special Memorial – Eric J MarderApril 13, 1987 – May 5, 2010
Eagle Scout since 2005This Saturday, July 10 was a special time for the Blue Max club and the Marder family. Their son and brother haddeveloped an interest in RC planes and put together an Alpha trainer. Unfortunately he passed away on May 5unexpectedly, and never had the chance to get instruction on how to fly it. Karen, Eric’s sister, contacted the cluband asked if the family could bring it to the field and see it flown as a memorial to Eric.
Steve, his father, Sandy, his mother, and Karen came to the field at 10am Saturday with the plane. At the timethey didn’t know that he had tried to fly it and apparently crashed. Yohay Hahamy discovered this when hestarted to go over the aircraft. In an amazing show of pulling together as a team, the plane was put back togetherand by borrowing parts from other’s planes and tool boxes, within an hour was in the air. It was a very emotionaltime as Yohay piloted the plane around the field with the family at the flightline.
Afterwards, some of us had a chance to sit and talk to the Marders about Eric and their lives. He was an active, young man who spent a lot of time with his family and was just finishing up his college degree. As the family left, they donated the plane to the club to be used as a trainer to help others learn to fly.
We received a heartfelt thank you from the family. To quote “It has been a very difficult couple of months butwhat your club did, collectively, was incredible. You showed us such unbelievable kindness and the experience, overall, was more than we ever imagined it would be. I just can't express our gratitude enough. The vast effortthat went into flying Eric's plane was amazing in itself, but the fact that you then took an interest in who Eric wasas a person, truly touched our hearts. We will be forever grateful.”This is truly what it means to be a club.
