Issue 2 21 February 2019
2019 is well underway and once again, it is a privilege to work with
students and staff, to see potential explored, challenged and developed. I
get to see the very best of student achievement here at PVCC; celebrating
sporting victories, creative performances and academic progress. I also
see the struggles of various members of our community. They are very
real, sometimes overwhelming and often hidden.
As the year begins with a freshness and vitality for many, for others it
means a whole new set of challenges and hardships. Very often, however,
students work hard to cover these struggles and can find it difficult to
admit to needing some help.
Depression is one such struggle that is often hidden and is on the increase.
Depression isn’t just feeling blue; it can be a debilitating illness that affects
a person’s ability to function. It interferes with everything from sleep to
study and play.
Here are some signs to keep an eye out for: Feelings of helplessness and
hopelessness, Loss of interest in daily activities, appetite or weight chang-
es, sleep changes, anger or irritability, loss of energy, self-loathing,
reckless behaviour, concentration problems and unexplained aches and
pains.
You may ask why I would write this in an editorial! I write because we are
a community where school and parents work in partnership. We recognise
that children are more than a recipient of subject learning, but are
wonderful beings created in the image of God. We also live in a fallen
world that has injustice, struggle and hardship. Depression is a part of the
life of some members of this community and as a community, we seek to

contribute methodology used in the calculation of the Commonwealth’s needs-based funding arrangements
for non-government schools. This follows a review of the existing socio-economic status (SES) score methodol-

Marc. The students had been selected from the House Swimming Carnival the week earlier. Any students

SECONDARY HOUSE SWIMMING CARNIVAL – Thursday 14th February 2019
The whole secondary school trekked to Aquarena in Doncaster for the annual house swimming carnival
the third week back at school. A perfect day was forecast but shade, sunscreen, Tshirts or rashis, hats &
hydration were encouraged for the day.
Each house had chosen their house coloured theme for the creative dress competition which made for a
colourful start to the carnival.
All the regular individual & relay swimming events were keenly contested with both student participation
and the general standard of all strokes being at a high level.
Year 8 student Ryan was the outstanding swimmer at the carnival breaking records in all four of the U14 boys’ individual events.
Ryan smashed the 2008 butterfly record by almost 5 seconds, the 2009 breaststroke record by 3 seconds and both the freestyle & backstroke records by well under a second. Fantastic effort Ryan!
Three 4 X 50m relay teams also broke records. Congratulations to all these swimmers!
Crichton in the U13 G medley relay – Nina/Emily/Jasmine/Kayla
Meers in the U13 B medley relay – Hayden/Ryan O/Mitchell/Regan
Meers in the U14 B freestyle relay – Tristan/Charles/Isaak/Oliver
Other activities available to students were the diving &
tug o’ war competitions; TShirt novelty relays, the Year
12 Inflatable relay, water slides & at lunchtime together
with a staff/student relay where the teachers finished 2nd
to Upton.
Crichton won the 2019 carnival for the first time since
2001 and by a huge margin which was due mainly to
excellent house organization by senior captains Jaymee & Ryan from Year 12. Crichton came 4th last year
so this was a fantastic effort!
Final points were:
1st Crichton 2030 pts
2nd Schippers 1727 pts

3rd Upton 1683 pts
4th Meers 1647 pts
The Plenty Valley 2019 individual swimming champions will be announced at the next assembly.
Congratulations to all Crichton captains and special thanks to all staff, student & parent helpers and to the
2 ex-students Emily Collum & Julia Tennent who ably assisted at the carnival.
Swimming training has now commenced on Wednesday & Friday mornings at 7am at Diamond Creek Pool
in preparation for the EISM Div 3 Swimming Carnival at Ringwood Aquanation on Thursday 14th March. All
are welcome at training which is being overseen by alumni swimming experts Teya Brown & Julia Tennent
and assisted by Year 12 student Prudence.
Please contact me for any details regarding swimming training.
