The era of urban micro mobility has begun. More and more people populate cities, leading to exponential urban growth. Space-saving and practical micro mobility, which has been our vision since 1996, is now more relevant than ever.

Society is changing and so is the demand for mobility. Eco-friendly vehicles, like our electric scooter range, will play an essential role when it comes to the future of per-sonal transportation. Even the US tech magazine WIRED has stated that micro mobility solutions can solve some of the biggest challenges in urban areas.

We will continue to focus on groundbreaking innovation. Together with a passionate team in more than 80 countries, we want to create a better urban lifestyle for young and old.

Thank you for your support.

Ever felt like walking was too slow, yet a bike too impractical? Wim Ouboter had just this feeling, which led him to make the rst design sketches for the Micro Scooter. He showed the idea to his friends, but they only laughed at him and did not like it. Wim was devastated, but wanted to take the project further never-theless. There was one major problem: how could he bring his idea to market with no con-nections in this industry and without having a lot of money?bi

Wim decided to focus on innovation. The Mini Micro, a colourful childrens version of the kickboard, still one of the top-selling Micro products. More innovations followed and Micro now sells more than 50 di¥ erent products.

In 2015, development of the electric city car Microlino started, led by Wim's two sons, Oliver and Merlin. There are already more than 10,000 reserva-tions for the vehicle and production will start in 2019.

one in the sports brand K2. Although they were very skeptical at rst, he was able to convince them to distribute the kickboard under their brand. It was a huge success.bi

T H E M I C R O L I N O STO RYHow much car do you really need for daily driving? Wim, Oliver and Merlin Ouboter Ouboter asked themselves this question. Most cars are too big and heavy for the way they are being used. On average, there are just 1.2 people sitting in a car, driving just 35 km. But how does the ideal vehicle for daily driving need to be?

The three Ouboters realised that the per-fect vehicle for daily driving would be a cross between a motorbike and a car. During their research, they stumbled across the 1950's bubble cars. Inspired by them, they started making the rst de-signs for the Microlino.

In April 2016, the three Ouboters partnered with Tazzari, an Italian electric vehicle specialist. Together, they planned to bring the project from prototype to series production.

A er having received more than 10,000 reservations, it was decided to move produc-tion to Germany.

A er several months, the prototype nally arrived in Switzerland. But then, something unexpected hap-pened: the prototype fell o a forkli and was completely damaged. This setback didn’t stop the three foun-ders and they repaired it right on time for its premiere.

In March 2016, the Microlino was pre-sented to the public for the rst time and was a huge success: within two days, more than 500 reservations were received!bi

YANNICK LISSANDA 2018,HEAD OF MICRO DESIGN LAB

Since Micro Mobility was founded, innova-tion has been an integral part of the corpo-rate DNA. True to its vision of a "better ur-ban lifestyle", Micro now o¥ ers over 50 di¥ erent mobility products for children, teens and adults and is the world market leader in the premium segment. The range extends from the popular children's scoot-er to stylish electric scooters and the lat-est coup, the Microlino. The heart of this tireless innovation process is our Design Lab in Küsnacht ZH; here the heads are spinning, new ideas are tinkered with, and the rst prototypes are created with a lot of passion and dedication. In this interview, Yannick Lissanda, Head of Micro Design Lab, tells us where he gets his inspiration for new products and what makes Micro's product design unique.

Your story about how you came to Micro is a rather unconventional one. Would you share it?

A er completing my bachelor's degree in in-dustrial design in Lausanne, I gained my rst professional experience "greutmann bolzern designstudio". A erwards I worked for Adidas for two years and also as a freelance product designer on various projects.

Since I was 12 years old, I have been an en-thusiastic Micro fan and have al-

ways done my shopping with the Micro¢ ex.

04I want to satisfy all these groups, which is not always easy.

What distinguishes the product design of Micro? What is special about it?

I would say that Micro's product design is char-acterized by a certain simplicity and longevity. The success of the Mini Micro for example is the timeless design that has with only small modi cations, lasted for years and stayed with the same target group. In the very fast changing scooter market this is very rare.

"Innovation Is Our Passion!"

One day I came up with the idea that it would be much more practical if I could attach my shopping bags to the scooter instead of having to drive home with one hand. So I built a pro-totype and wrote an email to Micro. Then everything went very quickly, and a er two conversations, I was able to start as a product designer at Micro shortly a erwards. I have been here for two years now and run the Micro Design Lab.

Where do you get the ideas and inspiration for new products?

Having ideas is not easy, but looking for ideas is.Curiosity and observation are the be-all and end-all. People and nature are my greatest in-spiration. If I get stuck when working on a prod-uct, then I go to the place where it will later be used and the ideas follow all by themselves. And when I wear my favourite grey sweater and have my hood up, my colleagues in the of- ce know that my head is smoking and that I'm brain-bending new ideas. Then it's best not to be disturbed.

What is the biggest challenge when designing a new product?

Expectations.

From whom?

The di ̈ culty lies in doing justice to all the dif-ferent parties. I hear from the management:

"That's too expensive." From the engineers: "It won't last, it won't work." From marketing: "It doesn't t our image." Then there are the sales

people, the factory and of course the customers, who are ultimately

the most important.

We focus on above-average quality in the workmanship and design of our products, attach great importance to sustainability, and are aware of our social responsibility.bi

SUSTAINABILITY IS PART OF OUR CORPORATE IDENTITY.

True to our vision of a "better urban lifestyle", we have set ourselves the goal of making urban mobility more practical and environmentally friendly without neglecting the fun factor. Contrary to today's disposable society, Micro products are made for a long life! We o er a re-pair service with spare parts for every single product. Thanks to the height-adjustable handlebars, our scooters are adaptable and grow with the child. Especially when it comes to toys, very short product lifecycles are the norm. For exam-ple, a child devotes an average of one day to a McDonald’s toy, and a Barbie doll receives 8 months of attention before something new is bought. A Mini Micro 3in1 grows withthe child and is in use for about 4 years on average, which is considerable in this age category.

"A M i n i M i c r o 3 i n 1 g r o w s w i t h t h e c h i l d a n d i s i n u s e f o r 4 y e a r s o n a v e r a g e ."

WE INVEST IN QUALITY AND SAFETY.

In order to ensure the long-term quality of our products, we use only carefully selected ma-terials. At every stage of the development and production process, a new product under-goes strict quality control with various test procedures, which guarantees that all the re-quirements of national and international safety standards are met.

WE TAKE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY SERIOUSLY.

We are aware of our social responsibility to-wards our employees and society and act ac-cordingly. Trust, humanity, transparency and a respectful approach are central values that are lived in our company on a daily basis. We also guarantee fair working conditions at our production sites and maintain a long-term re-lationship with our employees.

Micro is involved in various charitable pro-jects. We donated 100 o -road wheelchairs to people with disabilities in Mexico. With the Micro Scooter Kids Days, we promote exer-cise in everyday life and increase children's awareness of the dangers associated with scooters. In Zurich we support a reintegration program for people with special needs.

Did you know that in England during the 1890’s the first cars on the road were lim-ited to walking speed and forced to be escorted by a group of three people hold-ing torches? Hard to believe, right? Well, that was the law at the time and nowa-days we cannot even imagine a world without cars anymore.History seems to repeat itself as many countries are experiencing the same in re-gards to E-Scooter legislation. E-Scooters are portrayed as dangerous and an un- necessary consumer of public space.

As in 1890’s England, governments try to overregulate something that is actually a clean alternative to the car. Luckily, many countries such as Switzerland and Bel-gium have realised that E-Scooters could be the missing link in the last-mile mobil-ity solution and o¥er people an alterna-tive means of transport to their car. Here are a few reasons why E-Scooters could really be the next big thing in transporta-tion:

E -S C O O T E R FA C T S

2

COMPLEMENT PUBLIC TRANSPORT:

They can be folded and used in combination with public transport.

1

THEY ARE THE MOST EFFICIENT MEANS OF TRANSPORT:

You need about nine times as much energy walking and about four times as much cycling the same distance.

3

THEY ARE THEFT-PROOF:

Compared to bikes they are lighter, more portable and can be taken inside where they are protected from thieves.

4

INCREDIBLY FUN TO RIDE:

No matter what age, people are fascinated the moment they rst step on an e-scooter.

Javier Zarracina/Vox

Page 13: editorial - Micro Mobility Belgium

24

1. E-SCOOTERS ARE THE MOST EFFICIENT MEANS OF TRANSPORT

E-Scooters are in many ways more e ̈ cient than cars, bikes or even your own feet. Here is a small example to prove it: With just one kilowatt hour of energy, a gasoline car could do three laps around a football eld, whereas an electric car would cover 17 full rounds. Not too bad? Well, with the same amount of energy an E-Scooter would take you a whopping 333 laps around a football eld! All of that for a fraction of the price a normal or electric car would cost.In fact, E-Scooters are so e ̈ cient, a human would use about nine times as much energy wal-king and about four times as much cycling the same distance. Not convinced yet? Then let us continue.

2. E-SCOOTERS COMPLEMENT PUBLIC TRANSPORT

Compared to bikes, E-Scooters can be folded and used in combination with trains and bus-es. So they are the ideal mobility solution for the so-called last-mile problem, a gap in our mobility network that is di ̈ cult for public transport providers to cover. Trains and buses just can’t halt right in front of every doorstep, so you need to get to their stops rst. While o en it is too far to walk, with an E-Scooter you can easily get to the station and on top save some precious time in the morning.

3. E-SCOOTERS ARE THEFT-PROOF

Wait, what? Yes, you heard right: scooters are in many ways superior to bikes as they are lighter, more portable and can be taken inside where they are protected from thieves. This fear of the , according to the CEO of Brompton, the leading brand in folding bikes, the reason why e-bike sales haven’t picked up as much in city regions compared to the outskirts.

4. E-SCOOTERS ARE INCREDIBLY FUN TO RIDE

There is another advantage of E-Scooters that is o en overlooked: they are fun! No matter what age, people are fascinated the moment they rst step on an E-Scooter. It’s not only the speed and accelerati-on that is thrilling but there is an unexpected “Wow!“ e ect that peo-ple probably experienced when they rst drove a car. Having grown up knowing normal kick scooters, driving an E-Scooter is a revelation and makes them feel young again. t’s no surprise that sharing compa-nies such as Lime and Bird decided to focus on E-Scooters instead of bikes. They are more practical to use and made for those distances which are too far to walk but too close to take the public transport. The statistics prove that with an

average distance of around 2.5 km per ride, E-Scooters are currently lling this mobility gap in cities. The future will show if E-Scooters are meant to have a permanent im-pact on urban mobility. Perhaps people will look back in time with disbelief because they can't imagi-ne an urban world without E-Scoo-ters anymore.

Who is doing what in the company?

Wim: My two boys Oliver and Merlin are in charge of the Microlino project and the mar-keting team of Micro. My lovely wife Janine is the big boss because she handles the nanc-es of Micro. As the founder of Micro, I’m not as involved in the daily business but strategi-cally oversee the many projects of Micro and Microlino as well as product development.

What are the advantages and disadvantages when the whole family is working in the same company?

Janine: For us work and private life go hand in hand. At dinner we o en discuss the latest work topics together. Sometimes it can get loud especially with our two hotheads Wim and Merlin. I try to mediate between the two parties so that at the end of the day we can all relax together in peace on the couch.

What have you learned from your parents and vice versa?

Merlin: I think we learned a great deal about entrepreneurship and manage-ment from our parents. Most importantly, our parents have always talked to us as equals no matter the age di erence. For me that’s the secret ingredient for a successful family business. On the other hand we teach them how the young generation is sometimes handling things in a completely di erent way. The Microlino team is a relatively young team but at the end of the day you need the same leadership skills as 20 years ago.

Since when are you, Oliver and Merlin, in-volved in the business?

Oliver: Since we were very little, we were the rst guinea pigs for all the new Micro products. So at a very young age, we were already learn-ing a lot about Micro and our opinions were always taken seriously by our parents. At school when the whole freestyle scene start-ed to pick up, my brother and I started to sell custom stunt scooters out of our little work-shop in the cellar of our home. Now with the Microlino we want to take Micro a step further, from two to four-wheeled mobility products.

PEUGEOT MICRO E-KICK

The ultimate park and ride solution

At the Paris Motor Show 2016 it was for once not a super fast sportscar that stole the show but the Peugeot Micro e-Kick. The hybrid electric scooter is the result of a collaboration between the Micro inven-tor Wim Ouboter and the French car manufacturer Peugeot. By integrating the scooter into the boot of the SUV 3008, Peugeot and Micro are pursuing a joint urban mobility strategy. The docking station in the 3008 has a Bluetooth connection to the My Peugeot app, which displays information such as battery charge status or average speed of the scooter. The two life-style products also form a pure and elegant unit in terms of design. By the way, it was the former French president, François Holland, who had the rst look at the world premiere at the Motor Show – and he was visibly im-pressed.

Concentrated Swiss innovation spirit

Almost simultaneously, the two Swiss pioneers Wim Ouboter and Joe Steiner celebrated their big breakthrough in the 90s. While Ouboter put the rst Micro Scooter on the market, Steiner launched a new winter sport with the Airboard, also known as the bodyboard for snow. In 2018, they joined forces to develop the Micro Ultralight SUP. The in¢ ata-ble Stand Up Paddle sets new standards in terms of weight and packing size. Compared to a conventional SUP, it weighs only half as much and thanks to its ingenious design it can be folded up to t easily into the correspond-ing bag which also serves as a pump for the basic volume of the SUP and as a large capacity dry bag.

Urs Michel, Micro mobility is a big topic. Why do you oer this service to your hotel guests?

With our mobility concept, we focused on added value service for our guests. At the 25hours hotels we like to surprise our guests with by additional service. The Micro Scooters in particular oer an ideal solution, you can move around ¢exibly and still use public transport if the weather is bad.

Why was Micro chosen as a partner?

For us it is important to have a local connec-tion to the city or country where we are locat-ed. Micro's local touch makes the mobility concept especially appealing for Zurich. We like to work with local brands that make a dif-ference.

How is the cooperation structured?

Micro lends us the equipment and takes care of maintenance. The collaboration is extreme-ly uncomplicated. For our part, we lend the scooters to hotel guests free of charge. The employees are also allowed to borrow the scooters.

How oen are the scooters used by the hotel guests and what are their experiences?

We don't keep statistics on this, but are simply happy when a hotel guest tells us enthusiasti-cally about his outing, or even reports about it on Trip Advisor. Such a trip or experience can be the icing on the cake of your stay.

Where do you see opportunities to expand this cooperation? More scooters, to other cities?

It would be nice to expand the cooperation with Micro to the other 25hours destinations. We are very happy with the 25hours branded scooters, a great mobility concept for us and our hotel guests and employees.

The 25hours hotel is a new hotel concept characterised by charming, relaxed service which seeks contemporary answers to the demands of an urban, cosmopolitan travel-ler. Every hotel has a mobility concept. In addition to bicycles and cars, the hotel also offers Micro Scooters to hotel guests. Micro met with the Sales & Marketing Manager and talked about the cooperation.

In addition to the correct braking technique and safe cornering, the work-shops also sharpen the understanding and aware-ness of dangers as well as the rules in dealing with the new forms of mobility.

RETHINKING URBAN MOBILITYStatistically, an average of only 1.2 people sit in a car for a daily distance of 35 kilometres. Driving a big car is like taking your luggage with you every day even though you travel for only a few days a year. Sounds stupid, right? Unlike conventional cars, the Microlino is not oversized, but rather combines the advantages of a car with those of a motorcycle and therefore has become the iPad of the mobility world. Not only does the Microlino combine the best of the two worlds, it is also more eco-friendly : it needs approximately 60 % less energy in production and usage, due to its light weight and fewer parts being required.

HAVE A GOOD JOURNEY !In 2008, we expanded our mobility range and aligned our vision of uncomplicated and unconventional micro mobility with the travel business. This is how the Micro Luggage was created, rideable carry-on luggage with a built-in kickboard .In 2014, we got a call from the famous DJ Steve Aoki with the request to devel-op a Micro Luggage with built-in sound. A DJ travelling with our Micro Luggage ? The idea instantly appealed to us and the exciting partnership resulted in an innovative Micro Luggage with integrated Bluetooth sound boxes. In order to serve all age groups in the trav-el segment, in particular the youngest ones, the development of the Micro Trike and Luggage Eazy was a logical consequence.

When Steve Aoki, the successful American DJ and mu-sic producer, travels around the world, people are sure to take notice. It’s understandable, because on one hand, he is who he is, but recently his luggage has also been attracting a lot of attention. And no, not because he lets his entourage carry his case, but because he can glide through airports on it while making music. Since Steve Aoki has long been a great fan of our Micro Lug-gage, he wanted to design his own to suit his needs. The result : a cool piece of Micro Luggage with an integrated Bluetooth sound box Sound2go.

SOME SKATEPARKS, YOU SEE MORE SCOOTERS THAN SKATEBOARDSWhat began as an underground movement in the French-speak-ing part of Switzerland has advanced to a worldwide trend. With displays ranging from breakneck tricks to double back-ips, a new sport was born. Micro reacted immediately to the new trend, and together with riders from Montreux we devel-oped the ºrst stunt scooter, distinguished primarily by its solid structure and designed to withstand the extreme stress expe-rienced during jumps. Micro Freestyle Scooters have attract-ed keen interest on the scene. This is due on one hand to the functionality o f the products and, on the other hand, to the fact that Micro takes the input and requirements of riders seriously and integrates these into the develop-ment process.

MICRO, MORE SMILES PER MILE

Micro is the source of many childhood memories. Countless kids around the globe have grown up using our scooters on a daily ba-sis, whether on the way to kindergarten, on the school playground or during leisure time. Our children’s products have enjoyed a strong market position for many years. They have won countless international design and func-tionality awards, are recommended as an educational toy by renowned doctors and, although they have been copied many times, their quality has never been matched. But most importantly, they have brought fun, happiness and a smile to everyone’s face – the kids, parents and ours.

The Mini2go Deluxe is an innovative little scooter with storage space for the kids’ belongings. Once the bits and bobs are stowed away, or the snacks packed for a picnic in the countryside, the child simply steps on and scoots o . The storage draw is removable if noth-ing needs to be taken along. The Mini2go makes your little one mobile from as early as 36 months old and accompanies him or her up to the age of 5. Control takes place by means of weight transfer, thus promot-ing motor skills and balance in the child. The handlebar is height-adjustable, and removing the seat and drawer converts the Mini2go into a Mini Micro.
