r Brothers and Marist Friends,

now hopefully you will all have received a copy of the ument on Marist spirituality ‘Water from the Rock’. The incial Council has set up a small committee of brothers – rt André, Georg Bock, Colin Chalmers and Nicholas Smith – elp animate the Province throughout the year. Already, on ember 8th, Feast of the Immaculate Conception the ituality committee invited every community in the Province to in prayer to launch the year of spirituality as a Province. In course of the year ahead we hope that, with their help, we be able to drink more deeply from the very rich sources of Marist spirituality, as part of our personal and community

Around Christmas and New Year! On the threshold of a new year, lots of promises are made. I will be making one that concerns us all: that we can all breathe a purer air. The conference of Kyoto has made us aware that our planet is deteriorating and that we must drastically cut down the atmospheric pollution which threatens our climate

But is the pollution that threatens our mind and soul not even more dangerous? The atmosphere that surrounds us is often greatly spoiled morally. In a time when scandals and all sort of abuses are all that

we read about, there is a risk of us choking little by little. It is one thing to denounce lies and corruption, so that truth and justice can triumph, but it is something else to take pleasure in “what is going on" and to develop a morbid taste for everything that is unseemly. Because if it should happen that, by having a disenchanted outlook and a mind-set of suspicion, we lose confidence in man, it we would be our loss. It is also vital for our spiritual life to breathe clear air. To "hate the sin, to love the sinner ": this short statement from Saint Benedict is very difficult to put into practice. How, by not locking ourselves into criticism and judgment, do we let the pure air of mercy filter in? In the face of our neighbour’s mistake, we can take pleasure in spreading it all around and so contributing a little more to the pollution of the atmosphere. We can also, through a healthier but less frequent reaction, find some reasons to react by encouraging, in our own modest way, the conditions of a more breathable climate of respect and confidence. God, himself, has never despaired of our humanity. He gave himself completely to us because he came not for the just but for the sinners. If Christmas is so dear to our heart, is it not because this feast speaks to us of birth and

innocence? Like God, we must keep this audacity, believing in this fragment of innocence that lives in the depths of man. It is the grace of Christmas to give us for a whole year the taste of this purity and the childlike freshness that continues to live in each one of us. Fr Bernard (Abbey of Wavreumont-Belgium)

Fr Bernard Year of Spirituality What exactly does” Year of Spirituality” mean? Let me answer by quoting the reasons for which the Year of Spirituality was set up:

to deepen the Marial and apostolic dimensions of Marist spirituality; to live Marist spirituality more fervently and to make it better known and loved; to follow up on the 20th General Chapter’s appeal which asked of the Brothers and those associated with the Brothers to centre their lives upon Jesus Christ; to set up spiritual formation structures which could continue beyond the year 2008; to provide a structure which facilitates a ready understanding of the document Water from the Rock, so as to make the document efficacious for the Institute.

3

Page 5: Editorial Joe's Letter Around Christmas Year of Spirituality

Such a five-pronged project will constitute an ongoing invitation to deeper self-conversion making us, ever more, men and women of God, in accord with Marist spirituality flowing in the tradition of Marcellin Champagnat (sub-title of “Water from the Rock”).

We start from the last point, i.e. we must spread knowledge of the document “Water from the Rock”, especially in its experiential dimension. “Know so as to love,” says the ancient theological maxim. The maxim’s inverse is also true, “Love so as to know.” Here we confront a demanding challenge. The point is not simply to read the document and thereafter consign it to the library. The issue is rather to acquire a loving knowledge of the document and so be inspired to spread its message in the Marist world. Essentially: to live the spirituality of the document and, in turn, to witness to it. Only in such a way will the Marist charism be fruitful. Going upwards on the list, the fourth objective speaks of setting up structures of spiritual formation, structures that will go beyond the year 2008. We herewith make an appeal for the taking of initiatives: to gather suggestions, to think creatively of activities, to work up plans, initiating such activities without waiting for all the details to be pondered and given to us by others. On the official web page, a space will be set aside for sharing with others the beneficial results that will arise in this regard. The third object aims at reanimating the 20th General Chapter’s « old » directive that invited us to centre our lives upon Jesus Christ: “to make ourselves Christ” as the

Fathers of the Church put it. Such a conception appears slightly anachronistic, yet it is of eminent contemporary importance. The phrase sums up the Gospel invitation: Be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect (Mt. 5:48). This brings us to the second objective: to live Marist spirituality more fervently and to make it better known and loved. If we make the spirituality a part of ourselves, if we are enthusiastic about it, we will also be effective in transmitting it. The weight of years may sometimes make it rather difficult to preserve the joy and enthusiasm we knew when we were younger. Perhaps the Year of Spirituality will help us rediscover the affection we had in our early years for the charism which Marcellin contributed to the Church. The Year of Spirituality might be an outstanding chance to enter once again into intimate relationship with God, as was true in the case of Israel (Hosea 2:16-17), becoming thereby the “light of the nations” (Isaiah 49:6). And so we arrive at the first point. We can be credible messengers only if we deepen our Marist spirituality, Marial and apostolic as it is. “No one can give what one does not possess.” In a similar way, we cannot bear witness to what we do not live. The Year of Spirituality is an invitation to a coherent way of living. We cannot be Marists in name only, whether as Brother or lay person. We need to renew our Marist way of being in accord with the way Marcellin lived. Saint Paul would speak of putting off the “former person” and becoming a “new person” (Col. 3:5-17). The document “Water from the Rock” invites us to drink from the fountain, to quench our own thirst and then to give the water of this fountain to others, doing so with the enthusiasm of those who are unable to keep such a treasure only for themselves. In such a way did Mary herself act. Rome, September 17, 2007 Brother Teofilo Minga Secretary, Religious Life Commission

Beatification in Rome The largest beatification ceremony in history, that of 498 martyrs of the XX century in Spain, took place in the Vatican’s Saint Peter’s Square on October 28 2007 with all solemnity. Of these martyrs, 47 were Marist Brothers. From early morning the faithful began to head towards Saint Peter’s Square. Among them a large group of Marist pilgrims who had come from many parts, especially Spain.

At 9.15, hymns were sung and testimonies of the martyrs were read out as preparation for the celebration. Among them, the exhortation of Brother Laurentino to his Brothers months before his death: "Now is the time to show the fidelity you have sworn to the Lord”. This text can be read at: http://www.champagnat.org/en/220411006.htm. These testimonies drew great applause from those present. The Eucharist was presided over by the Cardinal Prefect of the Congregation for Holy Causes, José Saraiva Martins as the Pope’s delegate. He was accompanied at the altar by the Spanish bishops who were present in Rome and the General Superiors of the orders and religious

congregations. Brother Seán and Brother Luis Sobrado occupied a special place next to the authorities. The beatification rite was introduced by the archbishop of Madrid, Cardinal Antonio María Rouco Varela whose archdiocese contains the greatest number of the martyrs. He approached the altar accompanied by the bishops of the dioceses involved in the 23 Causes, and by the postulators, including Brother Giovanni Bigotto, to request of Pope Benedict XVI the inscription of the martyrs in the catalogue of the beatified. Next the bishops listed the causes of their respective dioceses following in order of the date of introduction: Barcelona (Brothers Laurentino, Virgilio and 44 companions), Burgos (Brother Bernardo), Toledo, Cuenca, Ciudad Real, Merida-Badajoz, Madrid, Oviedo, Jaén, Santander, Cartagena and Gerona. The archbishop of Madrid concluded the beatification request on behalf of all the bishops. Cardinal Saraiva then read out the Pope’s Apostolic Letter which authorizes the worship of these servants of God as beatified persons, whose feast day is included in the calendar on November 6. The assembly applauded with great enthusiasm as the official logo of the beatification was revealed. The beatification rite concluded with some words of thanks by Cardinal Rouco. The celebration of the Eucharist then followed, ending with the official hymn "Seeds of Peace”, led by the Choir of the Cathedral of Almudena, Madrid. Present at the beatification were 71 Spanish bishops, a thousand diocesan priests and religious and more than two thousand five hundred relatives of the martyrs and about forty thousand of the faithful. For the Marists there were one hundred close family members, together with three hundred Brothers and a thousand pilgrims.

5

Page 7: Editorial Joe's Letter Around Christmas Year of Spirituality

The ceremony could be seen live on the Internet through Vatican Television and on the web page of the Spanish Episcopal Conference. The reception for the Marist Brothers in the General House On the Sunday evening the Brothers who attended the beatification celebration, around 300 of them, were welcomed to the General House. They began with a prayer session in the main chapel, around a great cross erected before the altar, behind which could be read the sentence: "We forgive as Jesus forgave". The names of the new beatified, with the symbol of their Christian identity, surrounded the paschal candle illuminated by a lamp, symbol of the faith. Brother Seán highlighted the fidelity of the martyrs, simple men who lived a life similar to that of anyone present, but who knew how to respond until the final consequences. He congratulated everyone for this family event and expressed his gratitude to those who had worked directly on the process of the causes. Brother Luis Sobrado García, Vicar General, invited Brothers Lucio Zudaire, Toni Torrelles, Timoteo Pérez, Jesus Martínez, Gregorio Steel and José Luis Melgosa, to approach the altar. They were related in some way to the Brothers Martyrs, and they are living testimony that the blood of the Marist martyrs is the seed for new vocations.

The prayer session ended with the hymn "Sub Tuum Praesidium" and the presentation of a memento of the event to each Brother. Then

there was an invitation to a fraternal meal. It was a joyful meeting. Mass of thanksgiving in Saint Peter’s On Monday, October 29, at 10.00 am, a mass of thanksgiving took place in the Basilica of Saint Peter in the Vatican, presided over by Cardinal Bertone, Secretary of State. Concelebrating were the Spanish bishops who were present in Rome and the archbishop of Toledo, Cardinal Antonio Cañizares, expressed his gratitude to the Pope and to all those present. An exhibition about the Brothers Martyrs The General House was visited by numerous people during the four days of the beatification celebrations. Here it was possible to see the transformation made in the “Champagnat Room", where some original documents of Saint Marcellin were exhibited, such as his passport, some of his letters and a cope used by him. Also on the itinerary was the chapel of the General Council, the Council Room and the corridor of the Superiors where many mementoes and symbols of the Brothers Martyrs had been placed under the motto "Takes up your cross and follow me". Throughout our Marist history 37.586 people have responded to this invitation of Our Lord and have been professed in the congregation. The whole corridor was filled with evocations of the life of the newly beatified and the circumstances in which their educational apostolate developed. The tour concluded in the main chapel, with a moment of contemplation and acts of thanksgiving. Particularly moving was the visit of a group of Brothers who met the martyrs personally, as well as the visit of their relatives.

International Assembly of the Marist Mission - Mendes, September 2007

Brother Robert Thunus

On September 1st, at 6.45 in the morning, Frank Aumeier and I set off by plane from Brussels National airport heading for Rio de Janeiro to take part in the International Assembly of the Marist Mission taking place in Mendes. This meeting was to be the outcome of a year of reflection throughout the Institute which, at local, provincial and regional levels, had given more than 20.000 Brothers and laymen the opportunity to share their convictions and challenges for the present and future of the Marist mission. For the one hundred delegates present, most of whom were lay people, for Frank and myself, it was a very productive meeting considering the great diversity of experiences present. We felt privileged and very grateful to be there representing the Province of West Central Europe. You will find the letter written by the delegates of the European provinces as well as the final Message of the assembly below. We invite you all to answer these calls in favour of the children and the young people of today.

Mendes, 12 September 2007 Dear Marist Friends Recently the International Assembly of Marist Mission which took place in Mendes, Brazil, from 3 - 12 September, came to an end, and we wish to write you this letter. To begin with, we would like to express our appreciation to all of those who took part in the process, in the different phases, local, provincial and European. We realise that our participation in this assembly has been a privilege for each one of us, resulting from the trust placed in us as representatives of each one of the provinces which form Marist Europe. We would like to draw particular attention, in our time together, to the spirit of brotherhood and sharing which were also reflected in the vitality and audacity with which we confronted each one of the topics. We have come to realize the great diversity in living the Marist charism in today's world, which helps us to complement each other in bringing up to date the call made to us by God. We have seen that the work done in the different provincial processes reflected a feeling which has again been captured in the final documents of this assembly, denoting a synthesis of each one of our situations in the Marist world. Nevertheless we believe from the final document of the Assembly that it is very important to maintain a spirit of discernment. We must point out that this has been a historical moment for the Institute, a grace from God, having joined together to reflect on our mission Brother and lay people and in conditions of equality.

9

Page 11: Editorial Joe's Letter Around Christmas Year of Spirituality

Wanting to respond to what God wants of us as Marists, there were five great axes around which revolved the reflection and sharing of these days:

∗ Marist witness in evangelism. ∗ Marists of Champagnat in shared

mission ∗ Marist Education: new challenges. ∗ Defence and promotion of the rights

of children and young people: strengthening the voice of the voiceless.

∗ A revolution of the heart: opening up to the Spirit.

Lastly, we are convinced that this process does not end here, we should continue with our project of wanting to be "One Heart, One Mission." We are convinced that richness is to be found in all the life which has already begun in each one of our provinces. May the Spirit of God continue to appeal to our hearts and give life to our ideals and dreams. May Jesus, Mary and Marcellin accompany us in this task. In the name of the European Marist Provinces, Mss Annie Girka, Ms Angela Sestrini, Bro Miquel Cubeles (L’Hermitage)

Ms Maite Ballaz César, Mr Severino García de Pablo, Bro Andoni González Flores (Ibérica)

Mr Fernando Domíngez de Toro, Mr José Antonio Rosa Lemus, Bro Mario Meuti (Mediterranea)

Mr Felicísimo Pérez Fenández, Mr Juan Carlos Pérez Vila, Bro Antonio Leal (Compostela)

Mr Frank Aumeier and Bro Robert Thunus (West Central Europe)

Final Message: Mendes September 2007

AT THE HEART OF OUR MARIST DREAM

As representatives of each Province and District in the Marist world we, Brothers and Lay people, gathered in Mendes, Brazil, for the first Marist International Mission Assembly. We listened to God, to the voice of children and to one another; we spoke from our hearts of our desire to work together to shape our dreams. At the centre of these dreams Jesus reveals himself as the son of Mary and as the Risen Lord.

We heard the strong voice of Jesus revealing himself to us at the centre of our mission: listen to your heart; listen to the voice within. This is the centre; this is Jesus.

Jesus is in the heart of each individual who feels the call and responds. We find Him among us in our communities. Filled with His love we have a burning desire that unites us with a passion to serve and proclaim the Kingdom. We have all heard this call to holiness. Just as St. Marcellin responded to this call, we too follow Christ as Mary did. We have been captured by the powerful image of Mary bringing Jesus to life, calling us also to bring Jesus to life with motherly tenderness.

Within us are the eyes and ears, the feet and hands, the heart of Jesus. We see Him in the eyes of children, in the faces of the young people we are caring for in our educational

10

Page 12: Editorial Joe's Letter Around Christmas Year of Spirituality

and social works and we hear his voice in the cry of those whom we are yet to meet (Mt 25: 34-40).

Christ the Redeemer, from the Corcovado, with arms extended, sends us to embrace children and young people in all the dioceses of the world as Marcellin dreamt.

With Jesus at the centre of our dream and with the image of Champagnat holding Jean Baptiste Montagne, we imagine a future integrating the following five elements:

1 - REVOLUTION OF THE HEART – OPEN TO THE BREATH OF THE SPIRIT

As Marists, we are called to passionately centre our lives on Jesus Christ, developing a spirituality of discipleship. Inspired by Mary, we encounter God in that privileged space where we live our lives with children and young people.

As apostles of the 21st century, we are always searching for new ways to achieve our mission. Our educational and social ministries, and insertion communities are all sacred spaces for conversion. Joined with children and young people, we hear the call of God, and through this we come to know their needs. We are challenged to centre our spirituality in evangelizing, liberating and prophetic action being sure to respect our different cultures.

We need to ensure that our mission is shaped and informed by our rich spiritual heritage, and this will require transformational experiences that enhance our different yet complimentary vocations as Lay Marists and Brothers.

In order to develop this spirituality, we believe that the following points are necessary:

1. Particular and combined formation of Brothers and Lay people at provincial, regional and international levels.

2. The development of new resources and sharing of existing ones to support formation programs and activities,

particularly in areas of the Institute most in need.

3. The study of our Marist spiritual heritage, particularly through the documents of the Institute and the Church.

4. The promotion of ecumenical and inter-religious dialogue.

5. Personal accompaniment and vocational discernment for Brothers and Lay people.

6. In addition to existing groups and opportunities (e.g. Champagnat Movement of the Marist Family, fraternities), the creation of new areas of participation to promote our Marist way of bringing the Gospel of Jesus to life, with a sense of partnership.

2 - CHAMPAGNAT MARISTS IN PARTNERSHIP

As Champagnat Marists, we believe that God is calling us now to be partners, men and women, co-responsible for furthering the mission in a spirit of trust, understanding and mutual respect.

VOCATION

1. We believe that God calls brothers and lay people in different ways to share and follow the charism of Marcellin, according to their personal call in life.

2. We feel called to promote a new shared Marist vocational ministry and a combined formation, to deepen both our common and specific vocations.

3. We wish to promote forms of association and ways of belonging to the Marist charism, so lay and brothers may hear the call to live their identity

4. We need to articulate the vision for lay Marist vocation and its organisational structure.

11

Page 13: Editorial Joe's Letter Around Christmas Year of Spirituality

MISSION

1. We are called to work together in radical ways to announce God’s Kingdom to children and young people, especially the marginalised, promoting opportunity for:

sharing life

developing different ways of community life

discernment

management

decision making

2. New structures and processes need to be created that emphasise our co-responsibility, respecting the diversity, tradition and customs of each others cultures.

3. To be partners in mission we need to make decisions together, creating ways for representation at Provincial, Regional and General Administration levels.

4. International communication systems (ITC) need to be established, in order to build unity, and be informed of different experiences of shared mission, new projects and networks.

3 - MARIST PRESENCE IN EVANGELISATION

As Marist Brothers and Lay Marists in partnership we affirm that evangelization is the focus and priority of our ministries. Each ministry proclaims Jesus and his message. Therefore we feel called by God to be courageous in:

1. Evangelising through integrating faith and life, and promoting dialogue with different cultures and religions.

2. Understanding and learning from the youth culture and applying contemporary content and processes which draw upon their life

experiences, in order to liberate and empower.

3. Committing to our own formation in the education for transformation of youth and families to live and proclaim the Gospel as agents of change.

4. Promoting human and Christian values for social transformation and renewing our works to make them more evangelically fruitful.

5. Immersing ourselves at every opportunity with the poor and the marginalised

6. Being a leaven within a participative, evangelical, prophetic, fraternal, welcoming Church, desiring to develop and share its Marian character

7. Creating Marist communities of life that visibly and effectively evangelise through their family spirit and commitment to mission

4 - MARIST EDUCATION: NEW CHALLENGES

We recognize “In the Footsteps of Marcellin Champagnat” as a referential document, necessary to our educational mission. We are grateful for the dedication of all those who have worked as Marists throughout our history. Their testimony inspires us to respond to the needs of children and young people with creative fidelity to the call of God.

At this moment we want to emphasize particularly the right to education: an education that evangelizes, an education committed to solidarity and to social transformation, respectful of cultures and of environment, and a non-discriminatory education that creates a place for those who do not have it.

We feel the call of God:

1. To complete the Evaluation of Works throughout the Institute, in the

12

Page 14: Editorial Joe's Letter Around Christmas Year of Spirituality

2. We promote Human Rights in a critical and integrated Marist education, marked by solidarity and inspired by the Gospel in all our institutions and social projects.

spirit of evangelization and in the “Evangelical Use of Goods”.

2. To transform our educational works so that we, Brothers and Lay people, will guide children and youth in such a way that they become people committed to the construction of a society of justice and solidarity for all.

3. With courage, we denounce social, economic, political, cultural and religious structures that oppress children and young people.

4. We witness our advocacy for the rights with our lives on the personal, community and institutional levels.

5. We open our hearts to the call of children and young people in our world and promote a strong Marist presence in the poorest regions, accompanying the least favored.

6. We provide opportunities for those whom we serve, to share and participate in the decision making process and invite children and young people to become strong leaders in this area.

3. To go, in significant numbers, to those places where excluded people live, providing educational opportunities to children and youth, where their right to education is not respected.

7. We create or strengthen Marist networks for collaboration and communication, being respectful of civil society, the legislature, governments and Church institutions at the local, national and international levels.

4. To promote intercultural and inter-religious dialogue, with respect, mutual enrichment and from a relationship of equality between cultures and religions. Mendes, 12/09/2007 5. To develop a new way to education through Marist networks, at local and international levels, and with other governmental, civil and ecclesial organizations.

5 - ADVOCACY FOR THE RIGHTS OF CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE: EMPOWERING THE VOICELESS

We believe that God is calling us to be a strong and prophetic voice for the defense and promotion of the rights of children and young people. This requires that:

1. We guarantee that principles of Catholic Social Teaching guide our work (structures, policies and behaviors).
