WRD 103 Molly Rentscher Autumn Quarter 2014 Project #2 – OPINION PIECE/EDITIORIAL PURPOSE: The readings assigned for this assignment concern the impact of social media on how people read, write, and think. This assignment gives you the opportunity to enter this discussion and weigh in. Even more important, you’ll be writing in a genre that is different from the previous assignment. In other words, instead of analyzing someone else’s argument, you’ll be designing one yourself. READ: Axtman (235), Kuttner (242), Cowen (245), and Orenstein (251) WRITE: Write an article suitable for publication in the New York Times Opinion section in which you take a position on the impact of social media. Feel free to select a particular type of social media that you use frequently, or you can use a range of media. Because there are innumerable critics of the rampant use of social media, you may find yourself defending a position or supporting a position. TO INCLUDE: In addition to the readings, you should interview at least three people (more may be desirable) to use in your discussion. (You may not use all the interviews, but it’s smart to have too many than too few.) GENRE ANALYSIS: In class, we’ll work on genre analysis of opinion piece articles that regularly appear in the New York Times. To help you with your own opinion piece, read through 23 sample opinion pieces and bring 1 opinion piece from the New York Times to class on Tuesday, 9/30. We’ll do the actual genre analysis in class. DUE DATES: Inclass Genre Analysis: read 23 samples before class and bring 1 opinion piece from the New York Times to class on 9/30. Rough draft – 10/2 (bring copies for your peer review group) Final draft – 10/7
