BULGARIA vs RUSSIABULGARIA vs RUSS

In Round 2, a confrontation between two strong teams from Eastern Europe was scheduled. Both teams are regular qualifiers for the Bermuda Bowl, so every reason to have a look at this particular match on early Wednesday afternoon.

After a routine 3NT on the opening board, there was a swing on the next one, no. 18. It was a small swing of just 1 IMP but one would rarely see a more spectacular 1-IMP swing.

Board 18. Dealer East. NS Vul. [ A Q 10 9 4 ] A J 4 { A 10 6 } A K[ J 2 [ 7 6 5] Q 9 3 ] 10 8 6 5{ 7 4 2 { Q J 9} J 6 4 3 2 } Q 8 5 [ K 8 3 ] K 7 2 { K 8 5 3 } 10 9 7

In the Closed Room, the Russians had an undisturbed Polish Club - style auction, so they got to the slam quite easily.

In the Open Room, Matushko’s 3} opening bid set the table on fire. When South passed the double, Matushko started looking for a better place to stay only to find out that he had thrown away the IMPs gained by his initial action. Down six for a 1-IMP gain instead of down five for an 8-IMP gain to Bulgaria…

A few boards later, we had another slam:

Taking into account that 2NT shows a balanced 18-20 HCP, the Bulgarian auction after North’s super-acceptance was a little over-enthusiastic, I feel. Had North’s }J been the }Q, however, the grand would have had a better play than the remote chance of a black suit squeeze against four spades and the two top clubs.

With the heart fit established at the level of 2NT which showed a 5-3-3-2 after the Polish-style 1} and the 2} relay, 3} already was RKCB in North’s view, 3NT thus showing two aces and the trump queen. South was not quite on the same wavelength, we gathered, so the only thing we know for sure is that 5[ was another forward move as South definitely did not want to stop below the six-level. South proved right when the [Q was a useful 12th trick. Russia +1430 and 17 IMPs to them.

On board 23, Bulgaria scored 9 IMPs when the Russians missed a vulnerable game after one player miscounted his HCP but the swing on board 26 was a matter of bridge again:

As the diamonds were 2-2, East’s very aggressive double would have paid off had West passed it. When West instead showed two places to play with his 4NT bid, E/W were bound for a minus score. Even though Matushko got the clubs right in the end, he still was down two, +500 to Bulgaria.

Declarer might have made his contract but when he followed an unlucky line, he has set up a little defensive cross-ruff. North led two top clubs, dummy ruffing. The auction seems logical enough after South's highly aggressive negative double following North’s precision-style 2} opening, East picked North’s second suit for his overcall. FRANCE vs SWEDENFRANCE vs SWEDE

Clash of Titans, or Battle of the Best? It is hard to name this match, but one thing is for sure: these teams came here to win! Remember, these two squads were the 1-2 in Budapest 2 years ago, so everyone expected this to be a great match, and it did not disappoint.

France has changed their winning six due to health issues: Quantin-Combescure were replaced by then-NPC Lionel Sabanne and his partner, Paul Seguineau. Sweden also has a new pair, Sylvan-Wrang has been replaced by two Simons, Hult and Ekenberg of junior European Champion fame, along with their young friends, the Rimstedt brothers, of course.

Both teams were already among the top teams after 2 rounds, both winning twice.

After a few quiet boards, both teams gaining small swings, Sweden led 7-6 when this hand flashed on the screen:

Board 7. Dealer South. All Vul. [ A 10 3 ] K 4 { K 8 7 } A 10 9 7 3 [ 9 6 5 4 [ Q J 8 7 2 ] 10 8 5 3 ] 7 6 2 { A 10 9 6 { Q 4 3 } 4 } 6 2 [ K ] A Q J 9 { J 5 2 } K Q J 8 5

This is a great slam to be in, from the North side. Sadly, both these pairs had to open the South hand one club, therefore the slam was vulnerable to a diamond lead, but neither West player found the (potentially) winning low lead, so slam was made everywhere it was bid (but it caused a lot of swings at many other matches, N/S stopping in 3NT).

1} Pass 2}* Pass 2] Pass 2NT Pass 3{* Pass 3] Pass 3[ Pass 4} Pass 4] Pass 6} All Pass

The key to this naturalish bidding was probably Volcker’s 3{ fragment bid, which showed Bessis that despite having only 14HCP, all his cards were working, and slam would be a very good proposition. A few cue-bids followed, and slam was reached.

Closed Room West North East South Lorenzini Upmark Rombaut Nystrom

1}Pass 1] Pass 1[Pass 1NT Pass 2}Pass 2] Pass 2[Pass 2NT Pass 3}Pass 3] Pass 3[Pass 4{ Pass 6}All Pass

Upmark-Nystrom’s relays went much more artificially, but ended up at the same nice spot, the club slam. Well bid, for a push.

A couple more exciting, yet low scoring hands followed, eg. Would you bid to game by yourself if your opponents bid and raise hearts, with this: AK109xx, xx, AKJ98, -? I would – if partner has a Yarborough with two small doubletons in your suits, game will have play. Partner had exactly that, and with trumps 3-2, and diamonds 3-3, game rolled home at both tables.

Then came Ola Rimstedt’s time to shine as declarer:

Lorenzini Upmark Rombaut Nystrom

1} Pass 1] 1[ Dble Pass3NT All Pass

The bidding and lead was identical, North leading his fourth best spade, going to the 9-10-jack. The 10 of clubs went to the king, South returning partner’s suit happily. Both Norths realised they were already endplayed, and played two more rounds of the suit, still leaving declarer one trick short. Alas, an alert declarer can realise his opponent squirming in his seat on the run of the high clubs (dummy entered via the heart finesse)...

[ 2 ] K 10 { K 10 } — [ — [ — ] J 8 ] A 7 { A Q J { 8 } — } J 7 [ — ] 9 { 9 6 } 8 5

When the jack of clubs is played, declarer shedding the jack of diamonds, North can choose his way of death: if he discards a heart, the jack will be high. If he discards his last spade, he can get thrown in by either red suit to lead into the other tenace. If he discards a diamond, his king will drop. Sadly, the operators at our match were not up to the task here, so we cannot tell which one it was, but Ola made his contract, whereas at the other table probably the singleton diamond king took a trick, along with another spade and maybe even a heart, as Lorenzini was down 2, giving 13 huge IMPs to Sweden, leading 20-7, with only 6 more boards to play.

One would think this nice play would lift up the Swedes’ spirits, and allow them to go on to win the match, but it seemed like they were the ones who were bothered more by this brilliancy.

First, Nystrom, at the other table, made a reasonable, yet somewhat unlucky decision.

1} Pass 1{ 3{ 3NT All Pass

He opened a strong club, got partner’s negative, and Rombaut intervened. 3NT seemed plausible: he looked to hold eight sure tricks if hearts roll in, and would only need one from his partner, while bidding 3] could well push them over the last makeable contract. His partner could not be sure how balanced this 3NT is, so he did not pull to his junky-looking spade suit. After the obvious (diamond) lead, there was no chance, the spade queen did not drop, so he only had 8 tricks, with Rombaut having the club ace as an entry to his long diamonds; 10 quick IMPs back to France (the other table making 4[ when Volcker opened 2NT with the South hand), now only trailing 20-17.

On the very next board, it looked like an easy 3NT or 5}, but somehow, Ola went down in the minor game, while Upmark obviously underled his AKQ in hearts when he heard declarer had 4 of them via Stayman, but that was his ninth trick, with other ways to make 9 on a different lead; 10 more points, and suddenly, France was in the lead, 27-20!

A nice 1NT defense by Lorenzini is also worth mentioning:

Upmark’s 1{ was of a nebulous type, so it was perfectly normal to reply 1NT. Lorenzini led his lowest heart, which went to the jack and queenn. He won the second, and found the killing play: the spade jack, removing the entry prematurely from the South hand! Nystrom won, and continued diamonds, but could never get back into his hand to enjoy them, and had only 6 tricks. It is important to notice that it did not matter who had the spade 9 – as long as declarer did not have both the 9 AND the 8, this play could not cost, as eventually dummy will be endplayed in clubs to lead away from the spade king anyway. Well done!

MISPLAY THIS HAND WITH MEMISPLAY THIS HAND WI

In a major team championship one hopes, especially when playing on VuGraph, that the hands will not be too testing. On the opening day I find myself looking at this collection:

[ K J 8 3 ] J 8 6 4 { A Q J 5 } 10

With both sides vulnerable my partner is the dealer and opens 1}. Rightly or wrongly I decide to ignore my diamonds and respond 1]. When West overcalls 1[ my partner doubles, which we play as promising three-card heart support. East has nothing to say and my 3NT leaves us with this auction:

West North East South — 1} Pass 1] 1[ Dble Pass 3NT All Pass

West leads the [5 and this is what I can see:

[ 9 4 ] A Q 7 { 8 3 2 } A Q J 7 6

[ K J 8 3 ] J 8 6 4 { A Q J 5 } 10

There are only three top tricks, but I have chances in every suit. I would like to be in dummy to take a diamond finesse, so I try dummy's [9, but East produces the [10 so I win with the jack and run the }10. East wins with the king and returns a spade and West plays three rounds of the suit, East pitching a club and a diamond as I part with two of dummy's diamonds. Having won the fourth round of spades I play a heart to the queen and when it holds I cash dummy's clubs. North discards a heart and then the seven and ten of diamonds while I pitch a heart and two diamonds.

These cards remain:

[ — ] A 7 { 8 } 7

[ — ] J 8 { A Q } —

I have taken six tricks and if East has the {K I have an easy route to nine. Before making a decision I must attempt to construct the defenders hands. I know East started with six clubs and two spades and he has followed to one round of hearts and pitched a diamond. West is known to have started with five spades and one club and has played two hearts and two diamonds. I also know West has the ]K and he still has a spade, so if he gains the lead I will go down. It is clear that if West started with both red kings by now one of them is falling. Looking for further information I cash dummy's ace of hearts, East following with the nine and West the ten. Postponing my decision I exit with a club and East wins as I pitch the ]J and West throws the [2.

In the two-card ending East exits with the {9.Tossing a mental coin into the air I decide to finesse.

West produces the king and cashes the ]K so I am two down. This was the full deal:

Dealer South. All Vul. [ 9 4 ] A Q 7 { 8 3 2 } A Q J 7 6 [ A Q 7 5 2 [ 10 6 ] K 10 5 2 ] 9 3 { K 10 7 { 9 6 4 } 9 } K 8 5 4 3 2 [ K J 8 3 ] J 8 6 4 { A Q J 5 } 10

Post mortemHaving examined my conscience I cannot see that

there was any indication that West was more likely to hold the {K.

The operation was a success but the patient died.In the other room the play ran along similar lines but

declarer kept the {AQJ and, having cashed the ]A he played a diamond to the ace felling the blank king and scoring an overtrick.

ENGLAND vs IRELANDENGLAND vs IRELA

I had volunteered to report on all of Bye’s matches since with favourable results he/she could finish in eighth spot and thus qualify for the Bermuda Bowl. This offer was declined so I am reporting from ‘la profonde France’ on two of the home nations. Neither of them started well. England lost its first match poorly to Spain but won the subsequent two matches against Romania and Hungary to give them just above average VPs and a place in the top half of the standings. Ireland suffered a worse fate in that they lost their first three matches to Bulgaria, Netherlands and Ukraine. England needed to win to propel them towards a qualifying spot and Ireland badly required a confidence boosting victory against the old enemy.

Malinowski and Bakhshi use Polish Club whilst Allerton and Jagger use Acol with weak twos in the majors. In the Irish camp Carroll and Garvey employ a system based on five-card majors and a 14-16 no-trump and Hanlon and McGann also have the same basis but with many adornments.

A standard but not very pretty 3NT. West commenced hostilities with the queen of clubs, ducked by South. West persevered with a small club to East’s king, taken by declarer’s ace. With the benefit of being able to look at all four hands it is obvious how to make the contract. Declarer, not having the gift of second sight, successfully took the heart finesse. He then led a spade towards hand and finessed against the queen. Alas, West took the trick and cashed two clubs and led a diamond to East’s ace. When East returned a heart declarer had to lose another trick, since he could not untangle his winners. Declarer’s play of the spade suit gave him the best chance of five tricks as not only would queen three times in the East hand suffice but also queen doubleton. Note that queen doubleton in the West hand will not provide four tricks. Good technique – bad luck.

The opening bid guaranteed at least four diamonds and the Two Clubs response was natural and forcing. The convention card does not give a meaning to East’s bid of Three Spades. Did West treat it as natural and that East was bidding out his shape? If not then why did West raise to Four Spades and not give East

the welcome news about the heart control, either way insufficient information was exchanged to allow the cold slam to be bid. The Irish pair must have been expecting an 11 IMP swing out at the end of the board.

Having bid a slam on thin values the previous deal, surely it would be a piece of cake on this hand where the grand would make on a finesse. Though playing a different system the auction was identical. Again the opening bid was natural and the response also and forcing for one round. Yet again I do not understand the bid of Three Spades and the convention card does not cast any illumination on it either. I must confess to being dumbfounded that neither pair managed to bring the heart situation to light and that they were playing with a thirty point deck, whereupon the slam would have been straightforward to bid. Both pairs were fortunate not to lose points on this deal.

Whilst a couple of the deals had some mild interest in the play of a part-score I did not wish to upset my fellow contributor Mr. Bird with such reports. At the end of a quiet match only two double digit swings were on the card. England just getting the better of the other deals to win by 23 – 18 or 11.48 – 8.52 VP to push them one place up the leader board.

FINLAND vs ITALYFINLAND vs ITALY

The second day started with Finland, a country of only 5.5 million people, facing high-flying Italy. Roland Wald and I were commentating in the Open Room, where Karhulahti and Nyberg faced Sementa and Bocchi. The first board was a somewhat untidy affair:

Nyberg’s 3{ was billed as non-forcing but invitational. Although Karhulahti held a respectable heart stopper alongside the king of partner’s suit, 3NT was somewhat ambitious with no aces in his hand. Sementa doubled and won the ]2 lead with the king. Where should he seek a second undertrick?

Since the opening lead might have been from ]10-x-x, a low heart return was possible. Sementa preferred to try the }7. Although West might not have doubled without five tricks in his hand, declarer called for the }10. This lost to East’s }J and he was 300 down.

Sementa won dummy’s }10 with the ace and returned a club to dummy’s king. When a third club was led, West declined to ruff. Kibitzers watching a video screen of proceedings

told us that East was somewhat less delighted with the passage of play. Should Sementa have found a heart switch, do you think?

If declarer held six diamonds, he could be counted for five diamond tricks and the two A-K combinations in dummy. In that case heart switch was the only chance for the defence. It was unclear whether East would give an accurate count signal in diamonds when declarer might have a guess in the suit. He had in fact played the {4 on the first round, a true signal under their ‘reverse count’ method. Perhaps Sementa simply assumed that declarer would not have finessed if he held six cards to the KJ10 with the opening bid on his left.

West’s 1] was a transfer, the 2[ rebid showing four spades and a minimum hand. To beat the contract, the defenders must score two hearts to go with two clubs, before dummy’s 13th club is set up for a discard. Only a very unlikely lead of the ]10 can achieve this.

Bocchi won the trump lead with the ace and immediately ran the }8 to North’s }J. North could not attack hearts successfully from his side of the table. Declarer won the diamond switch with the ace, drew trumps and played ace and another club to set up a heart discard. He had his +420.

It is no good for South to rise with the }K on the first round of clubs. When he switches to the ]10, declarer can play any heart he likes from dummy, and the defenders will not then be able to score the tricks they need. North holds the two remaining clubs higher than dummy’s 10.

He chose to return to the }A and ruff a club with the [8. Only then did he play a heart. Sementa rose with the ace and switched to a low diamond, forcing dummy to ruff. When a second heart was led from dummy, West could win and force dummy again, leaving East with two trump tricks for one down.

(The BBO record states that East ruffed the second round of hearts, after which the contract would be easily made. The board was scored as one down, so this almost inconceivable defensive error cannot have occurred.)
