EDITORIALl4any thanks to Roger, Mary, Alan and Adam for submitting reports for this issue,I read that the East Anglia Transport l.4useum at Carlton Colville near Lowestoft is to undergo a largeexpansion. The site will almost double in size following plannjng permission to develop recently acquiredadjacent land. The existing tram, railway and trolleybus routes will be extended to reach a new statjon.I was concerned that the new GDPR regulations would have unintended consequences when it came to thingslike small clubs and newsletter distribution, The regulations implied that without specific approval, no furthercommunication with members was allowed after 25 May, therefore we would not be able to send out futurenewsletters, or even a reminder without your approval from that date. The anticipated increase incommunication from many companies seeking this approval has resulted in the opposite effect to that intendedlAs the deadline approached it transpired that there are varying interpretations by different organisations. For instance, Yahoo itself say that "By continuing to use their products after the 25 l4ay you are agreeing (i.e.Opting-In) to their T's&C's and that if you do not wish to, then you can cancel your account with them".If correct, this then must hold good for any organisation, so by remaining a NEETEC club member (i.e. usingour product), you would effectively be Optinq-In to receive communications from the club, as in our T's&C's.A Thank You to all those who returned the form distributed with the April newsletter, at which time was theprocedure being taken by other well organised clubs with access to professional advice.Having complied, many organisations are now interpreting this saying existing authority allows commLrnicationto continue until the next renewal date, current members having by definition agreed to their club conditions, accepting that their data is held and indeed expect communicatjon, It all seemed a bit ambiguous and open tointerpretation, but looks to be the way to avoid the sudden loss of contact or newsletterThe question of authority requiring yearly renewal seems to be overcome $/here the initial or renewalsubscription includes agreeing to club membership terms covering this, so allowang such communications tocontinue. So we now feel able to continue as before, with just some revised document wording where needed.

MEMBERSHIP NEWS Membership sec christine Attmere 01787 221588 [email protected] welcome the following new members joining at the Aldham Rally. Martin Bird from Bradfield, RobertBrewer from Copford, Glen Prince from Witham, I4ick Taylor from Shudy Camps, Andy Webb from Earls Colne.

REPoR'IS_qN_ALpltAtt BALIYIdeal weather for both days, bright but not baking hot, resulted in a good public attendance. The Auction was as popular as ever, running into early evening. We had tried to control this in the past bylimiting entries to ten lots per exhibitor, but it has again grown big enough to warrant a separate event, withsales realising over 85,000. The revised payout arrangement for vendors after the rally worked well, mostrecognising that the previous overnjght workload to enable a Sunday payout was unsustainable.Few can appreciate the tota, work involved in putting on the rally - organising, setting up and afterwards. TheAttmere family deserve our special thanks, without who it does not bare thinking about. Thanks also to allwho helped in any wa, from section organisers and those giving time over the whole weekend or just in thesetting up or clearing up afterwards. The overall financial result takes time to determine.

SECTION REPORTSChairman's Rally Report by Roger AttmereI would like to personally thank all of the comrnittee members, stewards, club members and all the helpers forall their help in setting up and running a very successful Aldham rally. The weather played a big part in ushaving a fantastic weekend, the sun was definitely shining on usl With plenty of exhibits, things to see andthings to do the public flocked to our rally making it one of our most popular shows to date. Again, I justwanted to extend my gratitude to everyone for a successful weekend. See you all at next years rallyl

Programme Repori By Ken AustinThe introduction of a full colour front cover for the programme came about as my supply of suitableengravings was nearly exhausted and cost no more as the border was already coloured. Producing theprogramme has up to now been by my "Blue Peter" method of literally cutting and pasting content andillustrations onto paper/ sizing these to fit available space at the top of pages, with the 28 pages then passedto the printer, In future, to make things easier for whoever takes over this role (hint) the programme is nowheld on PC by Sharward Services, our ever helpful printer familiar with our requirements, so can be updated asrequired. To this end, sect,on organisers will be in future be provided with a template to ensure conformity ofexhibit details and if desired, could even enter details on a PC cop, ready for the printer.

Ring Co-ordinator's Reporl By Ken AustinOn the Saturday everything fell into place, with parade timings never more than 5 minutes adrift, even thenonly due to one section organiser distributing plaques to non-parading exhibits rather than supervising thesection parade setting offl The timing schedLrles and duration are based on experience over the years, recognising the variables such as number likely to parade each day, which depends on the weather, entrytotals, which sections shy away from taking part, recognising the practical difficulties for largest vehicles andwhere an exhibitor has several entries, There are "Compensating Tools" available to pad out or compressdisplays to help maintain timing, like extra circuits or photo opportunities, even the way ring stacking ormovement is arranged, whilst still being aware of overheating difficulties likely by some exhibits. The Sunday parades did not go as smoothly, mainly when the ring marshals (their first year), concerned aboutholding up the public with rope barriers as vehicles entered, rather than hold back exhibits occasionall, decided to pack them into the ring as fast as possible. This not only overwhelmed the commentator, forcinghim to skip numerous exhibits from his commentary, but also resulted in large gaps between displays, especially the tractors which finished 30 minutes ahead of time. A lesser problem occurs when the plannedstacking arrangement is not adhered to, making for difficult manoeuvres when exiting although not upsettingtimings. Another annoying (reason unknown) disruption came when informed just 5 minuted before due toparade, the Eccentrics club decided not to - fortunately they only had a 10 minute slot - so this may be bornin mind next yearl Specialist commentators for the lYilitary and Steam section displays allowed a welcomebreak for Ben Fitch of l\4arks Tey Radio. Balancing the two tasks of feeding exhibit information slips to thecommentator whilst also supervising exhibit stacking conf icted at times, not easy to multi-task when atopposite ends of the arena.

REPORT ON OTHER EVENTSMattin's Meadow Crank-up & Road Run, May 6th. Report by Alan MattinA belated thank you to all of the good folk who supported the Little Tey Crank-up & Chequers Road run. Anadded thank you to the 16 of you that helped with the set-up on Saturday (maybe the bacon rolls and tea wasan encouragementl we had an excellent turn out of exhibitors and visitors, more than ever. on a lovely sunnyday - our poor little meadow is becoming overwhelmed, but made for a cosy and very friendly time. The new incumbent at the Cheqllers made us very welcome, doing us proud with trays of hot & cold food,Many thanks to the kind cake makers, the ladies who kept the washing up going and the Sunday eveningdismantlers who stayed to take tents down - it all helps to keep the event running. The BBQ machines wereworked hard in the afternoon and I think everyone survived. The crank-up started as a Thursday evening clubmeeting and has been going longer than the Aldham Rally.

Tendring Show Saturday 14th July. Report by Mary Fisher.A very hot day slill managed to attract nearly 20,000 visitors. Many came early to avoid the hottest part of thedEy. This year the club display was beside the ped€strian entrance to the OLrtside Rings where show jumpingand horse and livestock judging took place, so no problems with engine running this time, We had a hedgebehind us which gave partial shade and a water tap, which was very handy for the engine ownersStationary engines were in the majority this year with just one tractor present. This was a 1948 Ferguson TEAfitted with a Perkins P3TA diesel engine, A regular attender with the late Derek King, it is now owned by hisgrandson Andrew Hurley. There were six engines in the line-up, all with driven machinery, which made aninteresting display for the pLrblic. They were a 1914 2 ya hp Amanco owned by Paul Arlidge driving a Rensonwater pump, a 1925 11/z hp International Harvester lvl owned by Adam Munson driving a Lister H2 spray pump, our circa 1928 4 hp l\4oteur Ceres driving a Fairbanks l\4orse centrifugal water pLlmp, Arthur Catling's 2 72 hpCrossley PH trailer moLrnted pumping set and two engines owned by Steve Noy. The first of these was a 192517, hp rugby top Petter 14 driving a dynamo, the second was a 1943 Wolseley WD2 sheep shearing set Thisengine had a novel and amLrsing display of "Sid The Short Sighted Shepherd" with a sheep's wool and partshorn dog. (Not a aeal dog). I wonder where that idea came from. I think we all had an enjoyable day andthanks once again to Dave Culham for organising the display.

coach Excursion to the Dover Transport Museum' Saturdayl4tr'July. Report by Ken AustinA few members took up the offer to join this tour run by the Ipswich & District Historical Transport Society.Unfortunately clashing with the date of the Tendring show. After the Dover museum visit, there was an open-top vintage bus tour of Dover and on to the new Battle of Britain Memorial at Capel-le Ferne. There werespectacular views from the cliff tops within the memorial grounds and the frequent sight of vintage WWIIaircraft flying around rehearsing for the following day's anniversary event. Our coach later collected us andtook us along the cliff top to the arranged evening meal at the Lighthouse Hotel, Another bonus came whenthe driv.r sr)ooestF.l an extra visit to see ihe restoration nro.rress of thF Folkesione Harhortr Rail tFrminal.

July Club Visit Thursday 1gti Report by Adam MunsonOn a hot luly evening 19 members made for the Combined Military Services Museum at Maldon wherewe were greeted by Ben, the Curator and his assistant. We were given a shoft presentation on how themuseum started and told about the more unusual items on display. We were reminded that the collectionbelongs to just one person and that the museum is now full. We were given full access to the museum to lookat all the excellent exhibits. Refreshments were laid on tor us and after a very enjoyable time we left for homeat about 9,15. For anyone not having been before and expecting a random collection of artifacts in a rundown building were in for a shock, finding an immaculate modern two storey building, with exhibits wellarranged and displayed. Impressive outside exhibits were well cared for, even the car park was block paved.
