Michael Günzburgers (* 1974, Bern) Arbeiten kreisen um Zeichnungen und wurden schweizweit und international gezeigt, u.a in Mexiko, Paris und Zürich, und sind in privaten sowie öffentlichen Sammlungen vertreten. Seine Zeichnungsbücher von 1991–2006 fanden Eingang in die Graphische Sammlung der Schweizeri-schen Nationalbibliothek. Zurzeit arbeitet er an Serien von Himmelszeichnungen und versucht das Fell eines lebendigen Eisbären zu drucken.

A hundred drawing books serve as the starting point for conceptual works about entire mountain valleys, sculptures, construction sites, prints and dia- logues. Diverse trains of thought and narrative lines are continually weaved anew into a multitude of works. Plots is a sequence of these illustrated threads, arranged according to theme, that meanders between hand- craft, the production of pigments made from fruit fly eyes or a fictitious exhibition. This artist’s book is neither a documentation nor a monograph. It is an illustration of the search for a visual strategy.

Michael Günzburger’s (b. 1974, Bern) work revolves around drawings and has been shown throughout Switzerland and internationally, for example in Mexico, Paris and Zurich. His work is represented both in private and public collections. His drawing books from 1991–2006 found their way into the Graphic Collec- tion of the Swiss National Library. He is currently working on a series of sky drawings and is trying to print the fur of a living polar bear.

In Ghana gehören mehrtägige Bestattungsfeiern zu den wichtigsten sozialen und religiösen Anlässen. Die aufwändigen und kostspieligen Feiern dienen nicht nur der gemeinsamen Trauer, sondern ebenso sehr dem Sehen und Gesehenwerden, dem geselligen Aus- tausch. Trauerkleider prägen an Wochenenden das Bild des öffentlichen Raums. Das Spektrum der Stile reicht von traditionell bis zeitgenössisch und wird von wechselnden Modeströmungen geprägt. In der Trauerkleidung, ihren Zeichen und Symbolen, nimmt die ghanaische Gesellschaft sichtbare Gestalt an. Auf mehreren Reisen besuchte die Kostümbildnerin Lisa Meier Bestattungen in verschiedenen Landestei- len Ghanas und hielt die Feierlichkeiten und die Kleider der Trauernden in Bildern von grosser Unmittelbarkeit fest. Das Buch, das in Zusammenarbeit mit der ghanai-schen Historikerin Irene Odotei entstand, macht die Kleider der Trauernden und Verstorbenen lesbar und eröffnet so einen intimen Einblick in die westafrika- nische Kultur und ihren Umgang mit dem Tod.

Funeral ceremonies lasting many days are among the most important social and religious occasions in Ghana. The elaborate and costly celebrations are part of the mourning process, but they also function as a platform for social exchange — as occasions to see and be seen. On weekends, funeral attire often dominates the public space. The clothing styles range from tradi- tional to contemporary and are influenced by changing fashion trends. Through its funeral attire and its signs and symbols, Ghanaian society takes on a visible form. During several trips, the costume designer Lisa Meier attended funerals in different regions of Ghana and captured in photographs of great immediacy the ceremonies and the mourning attire. The book, created together with the Ghanaian historian Irene Odotei, helps us read the clothes of the mourners. It provides an intimate view into West African culture and shows how it deals with death.

A world full of intersections and gray zones, city and country-side, nature and development, public and private space merging into one. Is the midland merely a conurbation, one large housing settlement ? Michael Blaser grew up in the suburbia, which is per- haps why he has taken an interest in its idiosyn- crasies. He is not creating landscape and architecture photographs. His pictures are a social documentation. These domesticated landscapes together with their infrastructures are a reflection of contemporary Switzerland, a country striving for a modern, urban identity, and yet still unable to free itself of its provincial image. There are no people in Blaser’s pictures, but their presence is nevertheless strongly felt. The sober facades hint at the inner life of the build-ings and their residents. An unsettling quiet radiates from the strict composition and the pictures that are devoid of people. A strange melancholy pervades the work. The observant viewer senses a narrative moment behind the seemingly formal and banal presentation, a subtle bitter-sweet poetry of everyday life. Das Bild von jubelnden Rennfahrern, die überdimen-sionierte Champagnerflaschen in die Luft stemmen, ist sattsam bekannt. Aber das Leben eines Rennfahrers ist – und war schon immer – bestimmt von Rückschlä-gen, Konfrontationen, Problemen ungewisser Natur. Es ist, wie das Leben allgemein, beschwerlich. Davon handelt dieses Buch.

Die ersten Tränen, an die sich Max Küng (*1969) heute noch erinnert, die flossen am 16. Dezember des Jahres 1982, es war ein Donnerstag – und der Tag, an dem im Radio die Meldung kam, dass Colin Chapman gestorben sei. Es waren Tränen der Trauer; Chapman war Gründer und das Genie hinter der Sport- und Rennwagenschmiede Lotus, dem damaligen Zentrum des Interesse Küngs. Seit seiner Kindheit sammelt Max Küng Autozeit-schriften und noch nie hat er die Fernsehübertragung eines Formel-1-Rennens verpasst. « Das Auto hat meine Kindheit gerettet », sagt Küng, « ich hatte als dicker, unsportlicher, brillentragender Junge keine Freunde – abgesehen von den Stapeln der Autozeit-schriften. Ich wusste damals alles über alle Autos, das hat mir einen gewissen Respekt auch der unterbe-lichtesten, gemeinsten und gewalttätigsten Dorfju-gendlichen eingebracht. The picture of jubilant race drivers raising oversized champagne bottles into the air is only too familiar. But the life of a race driver has always been dictated by losses, setbacks, confrontations with technical defects, accidents, disqualifications, and problems of an unknown nature. Like life in general, it is difficult. And that is what this book is about.

The first tears that Max Küng (*1969) can remember shedding were on December 16, 1982. It was a Thursday, the day it was announced on the radio that Colin Chapman had died. They were tears of sorrow; Chapman was the founder and the genius behind the Lotus Sports and Motorcar Specialist, which was the focus of Küng’s interest at the time. Max Küng had collected automobile magazines since he was a child and had never missed a single Formula 1 television broadcast. “Cars saved my childhood,” Küng said. “As a fat, unathletic boy with glasses, I didn’t have any friends — not counting the pile of automobile magazines. Back then I knew everything about cars; that earned me a certain respect, even with the densest, meanest and most brutal town youths. They left me alone instead of constantly beating me up. I am grateful to cars for that, still today.”

Road to Papa is a sentimental journey that shows two sons tracing the footsteps of their father. Constantin and Leopold travel past the things, buildings and forms of their father, the architect Matteo Thun. A pictorial journey designed by Swiss photographer Walter Pfeiffer, through which he presents his own particular view of Matteo Thun’s work. The pictures are accompanied by Leopold Thun’s travel memories, recorded by Eckhart Nickel, and a conversation between Walter Pfeiffer, Matteo Thun, Constantin Thun and Eckhart Nickel that traces the parallels between Pfeiffer’s and Thun’s creative works.

Walter Pfeiffer, born 1946, is a photographer, painter and director, he lives and works in Zurich. Architect and designer Matteo Thun (b. 1952, Bolzano) studied at the Salzburg Academy and in Florence then moved to Milan. Here he met Ettore Sottsass, co-founded Memphis Group and became partner of Sottsass Associati from 1980 to 1984. He set up his own studio in Milan in 1984 and has been working across a diverse portfolio including architecture, interior, product design and communication projects.

Auf den ersten Blick scheint es sich um eine Reihe schwarzweisser Aufnahmen einer sanft gewellten Hügellandschaft zu handeln. Doch dann beginnen grosse Schatten auf dem Boden ins Auge zu stechen – surreal unbestimmt und leicht bedrohlich. In der Folge entpuppen sich diese als Schattenwürfe von Flugzeugen, denn die vermeintlich pastoralen Land-schaftsbilder zeigen die Anflugschneise des Zürcher Flughafens – abgekürzt ZRH, in der Funksprache Zulu Romeo Hotel. Alle zwei Minuten donnert eine Passagiermaschine Westanflug auf Piste 14 vorüber, ihr Schatten so gross wie ein Hügel.

Das Künstlerbuch des jungen Fotografen Sebastian Heeb (* 1990) ist keine Dokumentation über Flughafen und Luftverkehr, sondern umreisst ein visuelles Span- nungsfeld zwischen Landschaft, Flugzeug und Schatten, das assoziativ offen unterschiedliche Lesarten zulässt. Ergänzt werden die Bilder durch einen kurzen, auf einem Interview mit einem Swissair-Piloten basierenden Text, in dem der Landeanflug auf Piste 14 beschrieben wird — in seiner Knappheit und technischen Präzision ein Kontrapunkt zu den lyrischen Fotografien.

Sebastian Heeb (* 1990) studiert Fotografie an der F+F Schule für Kunst und Mediendesign in Zürich.

At first glance it appears to be a series of black and white photos showing gently rolling hills. But then the eye begins to catch notice of large shadows on the ground. These surreal and mildly threatening undefined forms reveal themselves to be the shadows cast by airplanes. And what was perceived to be pastoral landscape images are actually pictures of the landing lane at Zurich airport — abbreviated ZRH and known in pilot radio talk as Zulu Romeo Hotel. Every two minutes a passenger airplane thunders toward Runway 14 from the West, casting a shadow as big as a hill.

The artist’s book, created by the young photographer Sebastian Heeb (b. 1990), is not a documentation about airports or air traffic. It outlines the visual conflict that exists between landscape, airplanes and shadows. It is open to association and can be read in various ways. The photos are accompanied by a short text that is based on an interview with a Swissair pilot who de- scribes the landing approach to Runway 14. The text in its brevity and technical precision forms a counterpoint to the lyrical photographs.

Like buildings, pictures have not “simply been there.” Nor do they appear out of nowhere. They come into being, are perceived, and develop. That in this process pictures have an inseparable relationship to buildings and vice versa is obvious. There is a history to this relationship that begins at some point — usually quite early. In this book Dieter Maurer and Claudia Riboni use drawings and paintings, commonly referred to as “doo- dles” or “children’s drawings,” to trace this “early history.” But the authors are less interested in the childlike content of the works than in the drawings and paintings themselves. And they rely on their skills of observation : Drawings and paintings are compiled in six chapters, each of which illuminates a central aspect of early infantile drawings and the depiction of buildings in them. The texts in the book play a secondary role to the illustrations and are limited to concise and pro- found thoughts about the relationship between pictures and buildings. How pictures find houses and the house comes into the picture are among the findings of many years of extended research conducted by Dieter Maurer and Claudia Riboni on the question of early infantile pictures and their development. Unlike an academic trea- tise, this book places its entire trust in the power of the pictures themselves, using the observation of them to answer elementary questions about the picture, the house and the human.

Dieter Maurer (b. 1955, Zurich) first studied pedagogy, philosophy and psychology at the universities of Tübingen and Zurich, after which he studied singing with Margrit Conrad-Amberg and music theory and history at the Zurich Conservatory and University.

Claudia Riboni (b. 1968, Zurich) studied cultural studies, sociology and history at the universities of Zurich and Cologne.

Bilder wie Häuser sind nicht « immer schon da ». Sie « fallen » aber auch nicht « vom Himmel ». Sie kommen auf, werden wahrgenommen, entwickeln sich. Dass Bilder dabei in einer unlösbaren Beziehung zu Häusern stehen und umgekehrt, ist offenkundig. Auch diese Beziehung hat also eine Geschichte, die irgendwann – meist sehr früh – anfängt. Dieter Maurer und Claudia Riboni spüren im vorliegenden Buch anhand von Zeichnungen und Malereien, welche gemeinhin als « Kritzeleien » oder « Kinderzeichnungen » bezeichnet werden, dieser « Frühgeschichte » nach. Doch inter- essieren sich der Autor und die Autorin weniger für das « Kindliche » an ihnen als vielmehr, für die Zeichnungen und Malereien als solche. Sie verlassen sich dabei auf deren Anschauungsvermögen : In sechs Kapiteln sind Zeichnungen und Malereien zusammengestellt, welche je einen zentralen Aspekt frühkindlicher Bilder beleuchten sowie das Auftauchen von Häusern darin. Die Texte des Buches treten gegenüber den Abbildungen zurück und beschränken sich auf knappe, profunde Überlegungen zum Verhältnis Bild und Haus. Wie die Bilder zu den Häusern finden und das Haus ins Bild kommt gehört zu den Ergebnissen einer jahre- langen und ausgedehnten Forschung von Dieter Maurer und Claudia Riboni zur Frage frühkindlicher Bilder und deren Entwicklung. Anders als in akademischen Abhandlungen ist das vorliegende Buch ganz auf das Vermögen von Bildern selbst und auf die Anschauung von ihnen ausgerichtet, um in ihrer Präsentation elementare Fragen zu Bild, Haus und Mensch aufzuwerfen.

Die Szeonografin Carolina E. Santo und die Foto- grafin Véronique Hoegger spielen in ihrer Publikation Buchs ein Ortsspiel, das mit einem Wortspiel beginnt : « 4 Books for 4 Buchs. » In Anlehnung an Doreen Mas- seys Verständnis von Raum als « simultaneity of stories so far », handeln die vier verschiedenen Erzählungen vom banalen Alltag einer jungen Frau, die gleichzeitig eine und mehrere ist; und deren Identität ungeklärt bleibt.

Four places with the same name in four different areas — that is the basis for a speculation about ubiquitousness that allows the line between reality and narration to become blurred. In their publication Buchs the scenographic artist Carolina E. Santo and the photographer Véronique Hoegger play a place-game that starts with a wordplay : “4 Books for 4 Buchs.” In reference to Doreen Massey’s understanding of space as “simultaneity of stories so far,” the four different tales address the ordinary daily life of a young woman who appears to be both a single person and many figures at once, and whose identity is left unclear.

This art book brings together drawings, computer illustrations, photog-raphy and specially-created bird portraits. The work is based on the scientifically well-documented decline of a large portion of bird life in Switzerland : Over 40 percent of the local bird species is found on the Red List ; another 12 percent is considered potentially endan-gered. Through his own subjective imagery and pictorial language, Luca Schenardi fills the unresearched gap linking human impact, influenced by materialism, to the decline of nature using birds as an indication of the human way of life.

In the 1980s an upheaval took place — in part initiated by teenagers — which fundamentally changed Swiss society. Gauri Gill ist eine aus Delhi stammende Fotografin. Die emotionalen Verbindungen zwischen Tier und Mensch kommen viel- und sorgfältig zum Ausdruck und werden wirkungsvoll infrage gestellt. Dabei rücken auto- matisch Tabus und gesellschaftliche Codes zu Sauberkeit, Besitz, Ordnung und Sicherheit in den Vordergrund. Eine alltägliche Situation in einer bekannten Umgebung kippt ins Absurde.

E In the series Familiar Territory, farm animals are portrayed together with their owners. But instead of standing in a stall or on a field, they are pictured in the middle of people’s living quarters. Pigs, sheep, geese, goats, even cows, donkeys and horses find themselves unex-pectedly, yet rather gracefully and naturally, within the family circle, next to the cockle stove, in front of the dining table or refrigerator, among sofas and chairs, next to a potted plant or on a rug. The emotional connections that exist between animals and humans find multiple and careful expressions here and are also effectively questioned. Emphasis is placed on automatic taboos and social codes such as cleanli-ness, ownership, order and safety. An everyday situation in familiar surroundings becomes absurd ; the world is turned upside-down.

Es ist das Medium des Lichts, keine Reduktion sondern eine Konzentration auf das Wesentliche », so Peter Stamm in seinem Essay zu Nie ist die Nacht so dunkel wie in der Kindheit. Wie schon in Marcel Gählers erstem Künstlerbuch, Bleistift auf Papier, wo er sich mit Abbildungen von unspekta- kulären, meist nächtlichen Orten beschäftigte, geht er auch hier von kleinformatigen Schwarzweissfotografien aus, die er in originaler Grösse abzeichnet. Der Abbildungsprozess ist allerdings eine Stufe komplexer geworden. Gähler fotografiert, projiziert dann seine Bilder auf ein Tuch, das er an der Wand aufspannt, fotografiert dieses Dispositiv samt Umraum und verwen-det schliesslich das Lichtbild als Vorlage seiner spekta- kulären, obsessiv minutiösen Bleistiftminiaturen.

“Black and white is not colorless. It is the medium of light, not a reduction but rather a concentration on essentials,” explains Peter Stamm in his essay in Nie ist die Nacht so dunkel wie in der Kindheit. As in Marcel Gähler’s first art book, Bleistift auf Papier, in which he worked with pictures of unspectacular places, usually depicted at night, here he also works with small-format black-and-white photographs that he has copied in their original size. But now the illustrative process has become a notch more complex. Gähler makes a photo- graph, which he then projects onto a sheet that he fixes to the wall. He photographs this dispositive together with the surrounding area and ultimately uses this image as the basis for his spectacular, obsessively meticulous, penciled miniatures.
