Circular Economy examples“Freshwater sources are running out, balancing local water demand is the way to go”

Innovation - Water Reuse

Freshwater sources in several regions around the world are running out or will run out soon. Water is necessary to ensure an improved quality of life due to the impact of climate change and other environmental issues. However, in a future world in which the water sector delivers ‘Water-on-Demand’ solutions, in combination with new technologies and new business models, the balance between demand and supply should be in harmony. The reuse of water from industrial wastewater has attracted particular interest to improve environmental and business image perspectives.

Let’s start from the beginning: what is water reuse?Water reuse, also known as water recycling, is the process by which wastewater from a variety of sources is treated to be reused for beneficial purposes. Instead of discharging water into rivers (which ultimately ends up in the sea) water recycling will retain water in the area where it was originally used and keep the local water supply at the desired ‘on-demand’ level.

Why apply water reuse? To cope with water stress, authorities are imposing increasing water restrictions and more stringent regulations. As a result, water will become more valuable and its price will increase. Moreover, when an industrial facility reaches its production limitation due to shortages of fresh water supply, it is no longer a choice but a necessity to reuse ‘waste’ water to continue production growth.

Some typical cases to consider water reuse:• Production limitations due to water shortage.• Meet Corporate Social Responsibility goals to

reduce the water footprint.• Reduce water disposal costs and/or meet

effluent disposal limits.• Reduce the impact of drought by reusing

sewage wastewater.• Decentralised circular water management for

residential areas.

“Every drop of water counts, whatever the original source, providing on-demand water quality conforming to the highest industrial hygiene and safety standards.”

Circular Economy examplesWater Reuse Technology Solutions in a nutshell

Innovation - Water Reuse

Let #NijhuisSaurIndustries implement your water reuse solution to reduce your water footprint!

• BIOCTOR-MBRA sludge water separation system through membranes, using flat plate or hollow fibre membranes modules for wastewater. This can be part of tertiary treatment, start of pre-treatment for the membranes including CIP and flush water recovery.

• NMS-UF - UltrafiltrationThis unit is a superior barrier for viruses and bacteria removal and a solid pre-treatment for reverse osmosis.

• NMS-dNF - Direct NanofiltrationThis step is considered the finest step, combining two steps in tandem, ultra and micro filtration. This unit can be implemented to remove colour, bacteria and viruses for drinking water and wastewater applications.

• NMS-RO - Reverse OsmosisThis is the last membrane step before disinfection for producing high quality process, or even potable, water. The unit removes dissolved components, such as ions, heavy metals, TOC and viruses.

• NMS-EDR - Electrodialysis ReversalThe Nijhuis EDR unit removes all kinds of dissolved materials, such as salts. The unit can be adjusted to remove the salts with electricity and uses a reduced amount of chemicals.

• MLD/ZLD - EvaporationA smart combination and selection of various solutions such as evaporation, crystallization, membrane and EDR solutions towards minimum and zero liquid discharge. This is sometimes necessary to cope with the brine generated from reverse osmosis, minimising brine for disposal.

• AECO-CIP - CIP RecoveryThe AECO-CIP recovery is a system to treat spent CIP solutions (i.e. hot soda based). This unit enables the reuse of spent CIP fluids and (hot)water.

Depending on the application, technologies can either be applied to industrial wastewater, ground water, cooling water, condensate water treatment or decentralised sewage water and sanitation treatment.

One of the world’s largest FMCG companies has upgraded their existing wastewater treatment plant with Nijhuis Saur Industries’ intelligent dosing control to meet environmental goalsA Fast-Moving Consumer Goods multinational has upgraded their wastewater treatment plant in South East Europe with an innovative technology installation by Nijhuis Saur Industries. Already using one of the most technologically advanced and environmentally friendly production plants, the client contacted Nijhuis Saur Industries in 2019 to discuss how to meet their environmental goals. After the first consultative report, the existing treatment process was optimised with intelligent dosing control to reduce chemical costs by up to 30%.

In 2019, the factory team contacted Nijhuis Saur Industries to discuss an upgrade of the existing wastewater treatment system in order to fulfil the company’s sustainability goals. The Nijhuis Saur Industries team started developing a plan to meet the client’s expectations. The first step to optimise the existing treatment process was by introducing Intelligent Wastewater Chemical Dosing – i-DOSE.

Intelligent Dosing ControlThe “i-DOSE” is a solution that can be installed on any new or existing chemical pre-treatment process, and provides a real-time control for chemical treatment of wastewater, significantly reducing wastewater operational costs (e.g., chemicals, aeration, energy). The system also allows facilities to be operated at a maximum performance with reduced operator presence due to the intelligent dosing philosophy. Prior to a permanent installation of the i-DOSE, the client wanted to test the equipment’s efficiency, so a rental solution was installed on a temporary basis. The local engineering team installed, commissioned the i-DOSE, and trained the operators on how to use the device, whilst thereafter offering 24/7 support. After 5 months of testing with extremely positive chemical reduction results, Nijhuis Saur Industries was pleased to receive an order from the client to buy the i-DOSE.

The permanent solution is now working seamlessly, reducing chemical consumption by up to 30%, whilst also dramatically reducing the labour time of the client’s operators.

From pilot to reuse requestThe second part of the production facility’s cooperation with Nijhuis Saur Industries came in January 2020, when the client asked Nijhuis to find a solution to reduce the effluent Cl (chlorine) level in order to meet more and more restrictive discharge parameters. The most suitable solution to achieve the necessary Cl reduction was a membrane technology. In the summer of 2020 Nijhuis installed a state-of-the-art pilot system consisting of MBR biological treatment, nanofiltration, and a reverse osmosis polishing step.

The pilot trials were concluded in early 2021 with a positive outcome. Shortly after, the client submitted a request for quotation for a full-scale water reuse system upgrade to the existing WWTP which Nijhuis Saur Industries is currently generating for submission.

New wastewater treatment for large dairy plant in Germany

At the end of 2020, a "Greenfield" wastewater pre-treatment plant from Nijhuis Saur Industries was commissioned and has been operating at the premises of a German dairy factory ever since. The project aims to ensure the long-term discharge of wastewater into the local municipal sewage treatment plant, whilst also reducing wastewater discharge costs for the dairy factory.

Ensure production expansion possibilities and comply with discharge conditionsThe new wastewater pre-treatment will both allow the potential for future production expansion possibilities, and will comply with the discharge conditions of the local municipal sewage treatment plant. Furthermore, since a large quantity of the wastewater will be treated via the new pre-treatment plant, the local municipal sewage treatment plant will benefit as well. The new pre-treatment system ensures a reduction of COD and TSS which has a positive impact on the biological system of the municipal sewage treatment plant, reducing the power consumption of the aeration system.

In the new pre-treatment plant, a large part of the pollution is removed from the wastewater by a chemical-physical process. The so-called "flotation sludge" is energy-rich and can even be used to produce biogas in the digestion system of the local municipal sewage treatment plant. Approximately 2,600 m3 of wastewater per day will be treated at the Dairy site via a filter, a balancing tank and will then flow to the Nijhuis Dissolved Air Flotation system, which will treat a volume flow of approx. 95m³/h.

The new Nijhuis Saur Industries installation at Danone Nutricia site in New Zealand marks the second successfully completed dairy wastewater project in collaboration with local NZ partner Filtec Ltd (the first being Mataura Valley Milk, completed back in 2018). The PFR/IPF system supplied by Nijhuis is installed in a new wastewater treatment plant built by Filtec.

The system is mainly designed to remove the suspended solids content (TSS) in the raw effluent coming from the dairy factory. Thus, also helping to reduce discharged COD/BOD concentrations. The treated effluent from the flocculation-flotation system is transferred to the client’s new biological treatment system, starting with the anoxic tank followed by an aerobic pond and secondary clarifier. The plant is designed to treat on average 30 m3/h, and is now fully functioning after being commissioned in 2020.

Chilean wine producer solves operational challenges with Nijhuis Saur Industries DAF pre-treatmentThe Viña Santa Rita winery in Palmilla, Chile, struggled during the past year with operational problems of their pre-existing DAF pre-treatment, and the filtration of solids. To solve this situation, Nijhuis Saur Industries was asked to design a solution to continuously achieve environmental compliance, to avoid exceeding the discharge limits (and thus avoiding possible penalties), whilst also avoiding operational issues in the future. Ultimately, the new state-of-the-art treatment facility installed by Nijhuis Saur Industries helps the winery plant to keep its focus on their core business, and reduces their total environmental footprint.

#ItsAllAboutThePeople Contact Tamara Sepulveda for more information about the project: [email protected]

The SolutionThe Nijhuis Saur Industries treatment facility has been operating since 2020, and treats the wastewater via a design consisting of a balance tank, flocculator, and dissolved air flotation system. The flocculator adds chemicals into the water to enhance and secure a better separation of solids and undissolved fats within the dissolved air flotation unit (DAF). With the addition of dissolved air into the DAF unit, suspended solids and undissolved fats are floated as a top layer within the flotation unit, and are removed via a scraper system. Clean water then flows to a sewer connection. Nowadays, approximately 500 m3 per day of pre-treated water is discharged into the Palmilla sewer, and therefore contributes to providing cleaner water to the Colchagua Province, O'Higgins Region in Chile.

North-American pork meat cutting facility reduces surcharges and labour costs with a new wastewater treatment facilityA large pork processing facility in the U.S. has contacted Nijhuis Saur Industries as a wastewater treatment expert to help them reduce their wastewater surcharge and labour costs. Their facility operates from Monday to Saturday, based on an 8-hour working cycle. With a flow of around 19,000 gallons per day (around 70 m3/d), the wastewater was previously treated with basic technologies. To reach the effluent parameters of <15 mg/l for oil and grease and <40 mg/l for TSS (to meet the cost reduction objective), Nijhuis Saur Industries completely designed, built, and installed a new complete pre-treatment system to eliminate surcharges and manage sludge production.

#ItsAllAboutThePeople Contact Greg Walsh for more information about the project: [email protected]

Previously, the client was sending wastewater generated by equipment wash down and sanitation to a large equalisation basin for settling. After this, they would then decant the water to the city municipal water treatment facility for further treatment. However, this process generated high BOD, TSS, pH, and O&G surcharges. Manpower was a concern as well, as the equalisation basin needed to manually be cleaned out once a week.

Nijhuis Saur Industries was selected as the successful company to install the treatment upgrade because of their long-term industry experience and strong relationship with the client. As part of the project, an internally fed drum screen, balance tank (EQ), flocculation and flotation system will be installed. Based on the engineering support and local site installation, the system is expected to be in operation end of 2021.

Unique technology reduces heat and energy consumption of Dutch poultry slaughterhouseA large-scale poultry slaughterhouse in the Netherlands is the first company in the Netherlands to use a unique technology, AECO-FAT, from Nijhuis Saur Industries to remove fat from process water and make it suitable as biofuel in a hot water boiler. The poultry slaughterhouse uses the energy that is released in this process for in-house use. As a result, the client benefits from significantly reduced gas consumption and associated operating costs.

Nijhuis Saur Industries' AECO-FAT technology works as following: a specially developed flotation installation removes the fat from the process water and then refines it into three streams; solid matter, clean water and fat. The fat is cleverly separated in such a way that it can be easily burned in a hot water boiler as a sustainable energy source. Via this way, the client makes an important contribution to the regional circular economy. In addition, Nijhuis Saur Industries can help to implement the correct burner and boiler combination to burn the fat in a sustainable way.

#ItsAllAboutThePeople Contact Johan Hekkenberg for more information about the project: [email protected]

In addition to a reduction in gas consumption, the technology also has other advantages. For example, less chemicals are needed for water purification, and the poultry slaughterhouse has to discharge less sludge, both of which reduce CO2 emissions. After application abroad, this unique technology has now been applied at full-scale in the Netherlands for the first time.

The technology is also interesting for the recovery of fat from wastewater flows generated by other companies in the food and beverage industry. In addition, a food producer may sell the fat from the process water as a sustainably recovered product to customers in the region.

Plant refurbishment reduces OPEX at a duck meat processing plant A large agrifood cooperative with a duck meat processing plant located in France needed a wastewater treatment plant upgrade. Nijhuis Saur Industries (Saur Industrie) has been responsible for the O&M of the existing treatment plant for several years, and when the time came in 2018 to refurbish the existing equipment, this pre-existing relationship turned into a real joint-partnership.

The customer set some very ambitious requirements for the project, and challenged Nijhuis Saur Industries on the current O&M contract in a tough competition. However, Nijhuis Saur Industries’ existing knowledge of the system enabled a study to highlight several plant optimisation options that would yield promising results on operational expenses, energy savings and sludge reduction. As a result of this study, Nijhuis Saur Industries was successfully able to meet the customer’s ambitious technical and financial targets, resulting in the successful award of the project.

From consultative study to operation:

Previous situationThe relationship between the client and Nijhuis Saur Industries was started around 2007, and was further enhanced when a new clarification plant was installed in 2013. Nijhuis Saur industries has also operated the pre-treatment, biological treatment and sludge management system of the duck meat processing plant for the most recent years. The biological treatment consists of a continuous system. As the wastewater contains a high amount of fat, a fat treatment unit is installed. Next to the wastewater treatment plant, the on-site fresh water intake plant is operated and maintained as well.

Conclusion of the study and new situation

The expert team from Nijhuis Saur Industries saw several options to upgrade the fat treatment equipment into a new

system, to install a new sludge treatment system, and to cover the storage of sludge. With a ROI of up to 4 years, the

client decided to tender the project equipment.

After tendering, Nijhuis Saur Industries was successfully selected again against 2 serious competitors to design,

purchase and install the new equipment, alongside a renewal of the operational contract for 5 years. The total project

value equalled a total amount of €1.5 million. In addition, the NEXTEP monitoring tool from Saur Industrie ensures

that the client has 24/7 insight into the plant status. The tool helps the client to improve economic and environmental

performance.

The plant refurbishment is now under construction and is expected to be finalised at the end of Summer 2021. After start-up, a fulltime Nijhuis Saur Industries operator will operate the plant. In addition, in case of any emergency, a service line is 24/7 available for the client to prevent any wastewater treatment plant problems which might affect the production process of the duck meat processing facility.

What makes it special? With Poland facing increasingly more frequent drought periods, L’Oréal’s Warsaw site has slashed its water consumption in half by reusing approximately 75,000 m3 of water annually. An array of Nijhuis processes are employed, including flocculation & flotation, a membrane bioreactor, sludge treatment, and a reverse osmosis system.

The produced clean water is reused for co-production processes. Inspired by the ‘Water Loop factory’ concept, part of L’Oréal’s sustainability strategy, this project proves that the environmental footprint of cosmetics production can be significantly reduced. With exceptional white walls and a glass façade, the design was an integral part of this plant’s implementation, perfectly complementing the aesthetics of the Warsaw site. Another unique feature of this plant is the Nijhuis i-DOSE system, an intelligent chemical dosing system. While conventional dosing pumps are set on a fixed setting, often leading to overdosing chemicals during strong fluctuations in effluent quality, the Nijhuis i-DOSE uses real-time online analysis of multiple wastewater quality parameters to adapt the chemical consumption to the actual pollution load.

By optimising the chemical usage, the i-DOSE system increases the efficiency of the pre-treatment system which reduces the power consumption in subsequent treatment phases. Therefore, the plant is not only achieving economic and environmental gains by minimizing chemical costs, but also through power savings. Adding to these gains, operation time and labour load are also reduced since it is a fully automated system.

About the Industrial Project of the YearThe Industrial project of the year, commissioned in 2020, represents the most impressive technical and environmental achievement in the field of industrial water and wastewater.

Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API)The pharmaceutical and healthcare industry is not an exception to this trend. They produce wastewater which can contain Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API). These APIs are not fully, or sometimes even partly, degradable by conventional purification processes. Besides, the pharmaceutical and healthcare companies deal with variations in production levels calling for flexibility in the volumes of the wastewater generated from production.

Modular construction with advanced purification processesTo meet the growing demand from end-clients for water treatment suppliers to both construct and engineer flexible treatment facilities, together with treating challenging components with often limited degradable

ingredients, a modular building construction with advanced purification processes combines the best of both worlds. In this way, local legislation and a short project time-scale can both be achieved.

One of the latest Nijhuis Saur Industries project examples is the installation of a modular and prefabricated water treatment facility.

This installation will enable a global pharmaceutical company in Europe to comply with local legislation and internal environmental standards. The APIs will be degraded before discharging into the municipal sewer. Ozonation was chosen as the preferred technology within the total scope of Nijhuis Saur Industries’ supply, which includes Design, Build, Operation and Maintenance of the wastewater treatment plant.

Nowadays, industrial and municipal customers are continuously searching for solutions to meet their sustainable goals, to lower their environmental footprint, and to combine productivity and energy efficiency, whilst also ensuring minimum life-cycle costs. As a combination, these issues continue to pose a challenge to companies that strive to balance their economic and sustainability goals. By overcoming these challenges, a growing number of global customers are successfully extending utility infrastructure lifetimes, improving sustainability, and reducing operational costs through the implementation of innovative and flexible water treatment designs.

Simplified civil construction and reduced installation and commissioning time Nijhuis Saur Industries’ modular solutions not only simplify civil construction requirements, but also reduce the installation and commissioning time on site (including reduction of NOx and CO2 emissions). Each module is manufactured, pre-assembled and tested at our state-of-the-art production facility. Modular plants enable the minimum footprint to be used, and can be easily relocated or extended thanks to their modular design. Further benefits of modular construction include allowing global multinationals to relocate production facilities during their economic lifetime, allowing them to react far quicker and at a much lower cost to changing local requirements, changing demands and regulations.

The units are based on a simple design requiring minimal installation time. Built to be robust and reliable for monitoring conditions, the systems can also be custom-made to suit particular requirements, and to achieve environmental compliance within a limited time scale. The solution is adjustable to variations in the industrial activity, representing a ‘plug and play’ principle to enable clients to achieve their sustainability goals.

The main advantages of this modular build system over a conventional civil installation are:

• Flexibility: Provides a better programme guarantee by minimising seasonal weather influences on site.

• Environment: Reduce concrete constructions and on-site NOx and CO2 emissions

• Time & Schedule: Reduced installation and commissioning time; the ‘plug and play’ connections between the modules require only a few days on site.

• Reducing risk: construction methodology enables installation to be completed in a dedicated production facility, whilst pre-delivery testing improves reliability on start up.

• Health & Safety: Simplifying permitting procedures and reduced manhour presence.

• Multiple Use: Process water, wastewater, clean water and reuse applications.

Pharmaceutical wastewater treatment: end of pipe or an essential part of the production process?Behind the scenes of a 20-year-old wastewater treatment facility Years ago, a wastewater treatment was seen as an ‘end of pipe’ solution and a costly investment. Nowadays, an investment in a wastewater treatment plant is a solution to maintain environmental compliance and production performance for years to come. An excellent example of such a ‘customer-for-life’ project is the installation of a complete water treatment solution, located in the basement of the Polish Poznan production hall for a pharmaceutical client. More than 20 years after first operating, the client came back to Nijhuis Saur Industries with a request to modernise the installation, and for it to be adapted to the increased flows.

The first installation for the pharmaceutical industry

The installation that was completed 20 years ago was one of the first projects for Nijhuis Saur Industries in the Polish

pharmaceutical sector. At that time, pharmaceutical wastewater in Central Europe was typically treated in a different

way: due to the (relatively) small amount of wastewater, any issues relating to decentralised treatment on site were

typically resolved by sending the wastewater directly to sewer for treatment at the local municipal sewage treatment

plant. However, this client had a visionary mindset, dictated by environmental concern. By striving to achieve the

highest environmental standards, and establishing cooperation with Nijhuis Saur Industries, a precedent was set

that proved to be an indication of the direction of future industry development.

Design challengesThe implementation of the project 20 years ago presented Nijhuis Saur Industries with the need to face and solve three completely different challenges and problems. In 2000, the construction of a free-standing wastewater treatment plant at the pharmaceutical plant was impossible due to the problem of obtaining a building permit. The second challenge was that the implementation of a wastewater treatment plant was the first project of its kind for the pharmaceutical company, and it was necessary to find a way to effectively treat wastewater from the production of creams heavily contaminated with greasy substances. The study and analysis of pharmaceutical residues in the treated wastewater was the third challenge – no laboratory in Poland undertook this task.

Applied solutionsThe innovative implementation required the wastewater treatment installation to be located in the basement of the existing production hall. To arrange the low and narrow rooms of the basement for the needs of an efficient installation was a challenge, requiring the Nijhuis Saur Industries team to have specialist knowledge and experience. All elements of the installation, such as the filter, flocculation, flotation and sludge dewatering, were disassembled and transported via an elevator to the sub-zero level, before then being completely reassembled.

Modernisation after several yearsNowadays, the client is a global, innovative, research-driven healthcare company with a mission to help people achieve more, feel better and live longer. The company is guided by three priorities – innovation, achievement, and trust. In 2020, the dynamic development of the company brought new challenges related to production, which had previously been only gradually increasing.

Following a plant audit, Nijhuis Saur Industries developed a concept for the modernisation of the fatty wastewater pre-treatment plant in order to double the efficiency. Modernisation works to the wastewater supply line, and updating of chemical reagent lines was carried out. Due to the addition of new components, it was also necessary to design and commission a new electrical panel. Engineers from the local Polish team carried out the commissioning of the installation, consisting of stages such as the electrical installation, electrical start-up, mechanical start-up, hydraulic start-up and technological start-up.

Customer for Life exampleThe Nijhuis Saur Industries team in Poland regularly contacts installed base customers - over the last decade they have reached all recipients of their treatment plants in Poland. A personal visit to each plant has demonstrated a real commitment to cooperation with all former clients, whilst providing the opportunity to

learn about current needs and problems, and to offer service support. The cooperation between the client and Nijhuis Saur Industries is a model example of a relationship based on mutual trust.

This shows once again, even after 20 years, that a wastewater treatment is not an end-of-pipe solution, but it is an essential part of a pharmaceutical facility to keep life-cycle cost as low as possible, and to achieve environmental compliance.

75% COD reduction, water reuse and energy recovery at European recyclable board company As part of their sustainable responsibility plan, a European fibre-based packaging plant has installed a new wastewater treatment facility from Econvert, enabling water reuse and energy recovery. At this production facilities in the Netherlands, waste paper and cardboard is received and recycled into solid board packaging. Controlling the complete process from recycling to carton board production they maintain a high standard of quality and sustainable performance. The new treatment facility compliments this and is based on an 8-year rental contract, helping them to reduce discharge costs, meet their environmental goals and reduce water pollution by up to 75%.

Based on the two different water streams, the mill intends to reuse as much wastewater as possible. “When there is

residual water, a location can only contain a certain amount of water. Whatever you take in, you must discharge”, the

Plant Director said. “We are taking our responsibility and have decided to treat the wastewater in a better way.”

Econvert consulted with the client over the design and installation of an Econvert-IR® reactor. “It is better to obtain knowledge from someone who can help us improve the process of sustainability, rather than trying to figure this out by ourselves”, according to the Managing Director. After the wastewater has been pre-treated with dissolved air flotation, the gas-tight Econvert-IR® converts the BOD in the wastewater into biogas before discharging the treated stream to sewer.

A positive collaboration According to the Managing Director: “It was a positive collaboration, with a great transfer of knowledge. Combing Econvert’s expertise with ours ensures the best solution. That is exactly what we were looking for in a partnership to jointly work on the best solution.”

By Outsourcing their WWTP operations to the expert team in Saur Industries, a leading Integrated banknote manufacturing facility in France is now meeting its discharge consentWith a long history in the banknote industry, the integrated banknote manufacturing facility has internationally recognised expertise in the field of banknote production. It is the only central bank in Europe to incorporate both a paper mill and printing works. Due to this special manufacturing process, the wastewater contains hard nitrogen which requires a reliable treatment process and expert operations. As the client was failing to meet their consent parameters they required immediate assistance. After success in the tendering process, Saur Industries now operates and maintains the plant to ensure the client meets the discharge limits.

#ItsAllAboutThePeople Contact Jean Francois Mialon for more information about the project: [email protected]

The existing treatment facility receives the wastewater from the banknote manufacturing process into a coagulation, flocculation and settling stage. After pre-treatment, the water flows into the biological treatment process. Due to the difficult nature of the wastewater, specifically the hard nitrogen, the biological system needs to be in perfect condition to meet the effluent parameters. As the client couldn’t change their production method to reduce the impact of the hard nitrogen, the wastewater treatment plant needed to deal with it. As this needs a high-level of technological expertise, the client went to the market for help.

Saur Industries was successful in the tender due to the trust established during the tendering phase in our industrial expertise, technical knowledge and our proposed added-value solutions. One of which, the NEXTEP monitoring tool helps the client to daily monitor their 2400 m3 per day of wastewater.

A new temporary Nijhuis Saur Industries Aerobic MBR solution is currently being installed at a European refinery site. Since the client, a global oil company, started to introduce animal fat to produce renewable diesel, the nitrogen and COD pollution in the wastewater increased. The client started a project to upgrade the treatment plant, to treat the additional pollution and to meet the future stringent discharge concentration limits for surface water, and therefore required a fast-track temporary solution to be implemented as soon as possible to reduce the nitrogen pollution load in the discharge.

Fresh water and demineralised water treatment systems are in commissioning for a Floating Liquefied Natural Gas ProjectUnidro is currently involved in the commissioning and start-up of two water treatment packages on board of the ship ‘Coral Sul FLNG’ (Floating Liquefied Natural Gas). These systems are required to produce drinking water and demineralised water for the FLNG project. The project is utilised for further offshore exploitation of gas resources in Mozambique.

The cleanest burning hydrocarbonFLNG technology can unlock gas resources from underwater gas fields that were considered environmentally challenging and economically difficult to explore and untap. Offshore gas can help meet growing demands for natural gas, considered to be the cleanest burning hydrocarbon, which is set to rise by more than half by 2040. Many natural gas resources are located in offshore fields, but geographic, technical and economic limitations make a number of these fields difficult to develop. FLNG technology is specially designed to overcome these challenges. It is complementary to conventional onshore liquefied natural gas (LNG) as it helps accelerate the development of gas resources to meet the growing demand.

New condensate water treatment system for an Italian Waste-to-Energy plant, as part of the flue gas treatment upgrade to lower emissionsThe Italian company A2A, a large-scale sustainability company, has contracted in late 2020 with Unidro, a Nijhuis Saur Industries company, to supply a Condensate Treatment and Recovery Package for the Brescia power station. The energy recovery from exhaust fumes will be used for remote heating and is designed and supplied by the French LAB (group CNIM).

The solution provided by Unidro will treat condensate water and recover it as demineralized water by means of Ultrafiltration, Reverse Osmosis, and EDI technologies. A similar system was supplied by Unidro a few years ago for the Hofor PS in Copenhagen and is now successfully in operation. Condensate water from flue gas needs to be treated in a very efficient way, in order to reach the final quality suitable for the reuse as boiler feed water or as feed water in district heating systems.

#ItsAllAboutThePeople Contact Francesco Ghisalberti for more information about the project: [email protected]

About A2AWaste-to-energy operations, if implemented with high-performance energy systems, smoke purification and waste not otherwise recoverable, has environmental advantages allowing both the saving of energy resources and prevents greenhouse gas emissions from power plants fuelled by fossil fuels and landfills. A2A is present in the cities of Milan, Brescia and Bergamo waste-to-energy plants. They represent an important source of thermal energy for district heating areas served by A2A and also represent an important quota of the electrical output of the Group. A2A promote Italy’s sustainable growth.

About the Waste-to-Energy Plant (WTE)WTE plants permit the recouping of electric and thermal energy from waste. The waste can be supplied to the plants both in its original form and in the form of RDF (refuse derived fuel). The RDF is derived from a series of processes that includes shredding, biological drying i.e. using the heat generated by bacterial activities,

separation of ferrous and nonferrous metals – thus, obtaining a fuel with high energy content and constant chemical and physical characteristics.

Egypt on top of the Middle East Market:EPC contractor Petrojet has awarded Nijhuis Saur Industries the order to supply the industrial wastewater treatment plant for the new ANOPC hydrocracking complex in Egypt

The leading regional full-service construction group Petrojet has awarded Nijhuis Saur Industries the prestigious engineering and procurement order to supply the wastewater treatment package at the new hydrocracking complex of ANOPC in Assiut, Egypt. The start-up of this state-of-the-art water treatment facility is expected in 2023, and will not only meet the stringent effluent discharge limits of the authorities in Egypt, but will also mitigate water scarcity by reusing water in the production process.

Smart water-use to build a more resilient, sustainable, and inclusive futureWhilst the new hydrocracking complex plays an important role in international business and employment, the world’s most precious resource, water, plays an indispensable role in the production of the high-value products. To provide ‘water-on-demand’, to minimise the impact of using intake water from the Nile, and to minimise any subsequent discharge, the additional zero-liquid-discharge (ZLD) equipment closes the water loop and meets Nijhuis Saur Industries’ policy to ‘reduce, reuse and recover’.

Holterman, President and CEO of Nijhuis Saur Industries stated that: “For thousands of years the river Nile has been Egypt’s primary source of drinking water, and has also been a natural source of water to the country’s industrial and agricultural sectors. Our team has been challenged to design a real showcase for Egypt, enabling them to produce highly valuable energy products, whilst minimizing the use of water, avoiding the discharge of pollutants to the river Nile, reducing the impact on the environment, and all whilst adapting to the harsh Egyptian weather conditions.

Since Egypt has been suffering from severe water scarcity in recent years, it is one of the country’s top priorities to protect their natural water resources and conserve water. Thanks to smart and state-of-the-art design, the new industrial water plant will be an example of how water and petroleum are closely linked, while promoting sustainable water use.”

Closing the water loop and #StandForWaterThe new wastewater plant will treat several water streams, such as cooling tower blow-down, oily water effluent, spent caustic effluent, and sanitary water. The process flow consists of a number of proven Nijhuis Saur Industries technologies, and starts with treating the wastewater via API separation units and primary equalization. This will then be followed by a coagulation/flocculation and DAF process.

The secondary treatment consists of biological tanks with activated sludge. The final polishing step before the clean water enters the ZLD plant consists of both sand and carbon filtration. The sludge generated from the different process steps is collected, and will be treated with a sludge dewatering system. Finally, the concentrated spent caustic effluent stream will have a specialized pre-treatment installation to reduce the high COD. By oxidising all reactive sulphur compounds, this enables it to become biodegradable for further treatment.

Petrojet will act as the main EPC contractor. Nijhuis Saur Industries, supported by its trusted Egyptian business development partner Bahadii Group, has been selected as the best industrial water treatment technology-package supplier and will deliver the complete engineering, manufacturing, procurement and transportation of the technology, instrumentation and electrical supply package. Nijhuis Saur Industries will also provide supervision to Petrojet during installation and commissioning.

Reducing the impact of water scarcity and the removal of micropollutants has hit the Netherlands as well. A country where traditionally as much water as possible is drained to the rivers to finally flow to the ocean, is nowadays in a water and climate transition. ‘The Dutch’ need to keep the water in the region and treat it to the required effluent quality to dramatically reduce environmental impact and close the waterloop.

Over the years, Nijhuis Saur Industries has explored and researched numerous ways to help water authorities and industrial clients to start adapting to water and climate transition. New innovations and business cases are necessary to build a more sustainable, resilient and inclusive future.

The Netherlands as a stepping-stone for water-on-demand

Municipal and Industrial pilot plants and full-scale innovations in the spotlights

The Netherlands is a stepping-stone for the water treatment market. On one hand, pilot projects to investigate new innovations and, on the other hand, to deliver full-scale plants to reduce the impact of industrial wastewater (decentralised approach) on sewage treatment plants or discharge to surface water. In addition, new process streams at sewage treatment plants (centralised approach) are necessary to fight water scarcity, reduce the impact of micropollutants (and particularly medical residues), reduce CO2 and nitrogen emissions.

Reducing nitrogen emissions are at the moment a real issue in the Netherlands, and other problems mentioned above are affecting the whole of Europe. In particular Antibiotic Resistance Bacteria (AMR) are becoming a real threat, and not only for Europe. Once these bacteria have reached the environment, people who come into contact with these resistant bacteria, for example by swimming, could find that the antibiotics become less effective, and that will have a dramatical impact on treating human and animal infections.

Potable Water & Sewage Treatment

Speed-up the water transition process: policies and stricter legislationAlternative methods of constructing these installations (mobile, botanically and or civil), are important drivers in response to a growing population and fluctuating wastewater flows, with a strong focus on reducing the ecological footprint. In addition, positive changes within national and continental policies and legislation can have a dramatic impact on the speed of our transition. Change is only possible if all policymakers and executers within the water loop stand together as one and take their responsibility to reduce pollution seriously.

An overview of pilots and full-scale projectsThe Nijhuis Saur Industries team has a number of pilot and full-scale projects that have been delivered in the past few years, and have prioritised those that will be important in this specific context. In addition, several full scale plants are to be delivered in the coming years for both industrial production sites and sewage treatment plants. We have highlighted 4 projects in the next pages where we currently work together with water authorities in areas such as reducing the impact of water scarcity and the removal of micropollutants, and in particular medical residues and antibiotic resistance bacteria.

Full-scale PACAS installation at sewage treatment plant Leiden-Noord to remove medical residues*The construction of a full-scale PACAS (Powdered Activated Carbon in Activated Sludge) installation started in January 2021 at the WWTP Leiden Noord in the Netherlands. Dutch water authority Rijnland is the first to apply the Nijhuis Saur Industries technology in cooperation with plant integrator ADS group. Rijnland has the objective to improve water quality by, among other things, delivering an additional treatment step to the existing WWTP. This purification step removes medical residues and other micropollutants from municipal wastewater. Activated carbon is dosed into the aeration tank of the existing WWTP. The pulverised coal consists of a highly porous material to which all kinds of chemical substances bind.

PACAS aims to remove approx. 70% of the medical residues from the wastewater. The first full-scale installation in the Netherlands is being delivered at the Leiden-Noord WWTP. The PACAS project is in line with the increasing European political attention to micropollutants. For example, the European Union is in the process of drawing up a strategic supply chain approach to pharmaceutical residues and there is the European Green Deal for a climate-neutral Europe in 2050, which includes an action plan with a focus on pharmaceutical residues, among other things.

Sophisticated form of process technologyNijhuis Saur Industries is working together with contractor ADS group on this specific project. Project leader of ADS Group, Gerrit Koppelman, proudly states: “ADS Group acts as an integrator for the entire project, whereby we are responsible for the delivery of the building with the coal production and dosing installation. Based on the quality of the partnership, this project has been awarded to ADS Group and our knowledge, and technology partner Nijhuis Saur Industries. We are therefore proud that we, together with our partner Nijhuis Saur Industries, can contribute to this sophisticated form of process technology.”

Full-scale ozone installation at sewage treatment plant Houten to remove medical residues and improve drinking water source*The Dutch Houten wastewater treatment plant emerged as a national hotspot from analysis of all WWTP’s in the field of medicine residues in wastewater. That is why the Nijhuis Saur Industries ozone technology will be delivered to the Houten WWTP, for the additional removal of medicine residues. The ozone installation reduces the quantity of medical residues that end up in the environment. The purified water from Houten affects the drinking water intake in the ‘Lek’ Canal. The removal of additional medical residues has a positive effect on the quality of the drinking water source.

The Houten WWTP, where the water from about 85,000 people and various companies is treated, is a logical location for the additional technology. Sewage treatment in the Utrecht municipality has a major influence on the quality of the receiving surface water and has therefore been designated from analysis as a national hotspot in the field of medical residues in wastewater. According to water authority ‘Hoogheemraadschap De Stichtse Rijnlanden’ (HDSR), the WWTP has the correct scale to install ozone technology: neither too large, nor too small.

A dedicated construction team first creates a design, and then builds the installation. Civil contractor Pannekoek GWW will work together with technology-partners Nijhuis Saur Industries and engineering firm Witteveen+Bos. Nijhuis provides the knowledge on the ozone installation.

The aim is that the ozone plant is operational in 2022. A maximum of 870 cubic meters of wastewater can be processed per hour.

Ozone is a gas that, in contact with wastewater, causes the oxidation of micro pollutants. HDSR calls it an effective and proven process for the breakdown of organic micro pollutants, such as endocrine disrupting compounds and antibiotics. After technology comparison from the water authority, ozone turned out to be the most beneficial because of the degree of removal of pharmaceutical residues, the energy consumption, the sustainability, the use of scarce raw materials and - not unimportantly - the costs.

Successfully removing medical residues from wastewater Pilot at the source and at the sewage treatment plant*

The Dutch Water Authority Waterschap Rijn en IJssel, together with water technology partners Nijhuis Saur Industries and Van Remmen UV, have taken an important step forward in successfully developing a method for removing medical residues from wastewater. Cooperating with a local hospital ‘Streekziekenhuis Koningin Beatrix’ in Winterswijk, the Netherlands, a pilot scale technology trial was initiated 2 years ago. The smart application of ozone and UV technology has been proven to remove at least 80% of medical residues from discharged wastewater, 'at the source'.

Improve surface water qualityWith this research, the four parties aim to contribute to improving surface water quality, whilst anticipating the potential implementation of a heightened legal framework in 2027 (Water Framework Directive, WFD).

#ItsAllAboutThePeople Contact Eddie Broeders for more information about the project: [email protected]

UVO project set-upExtensive investigations were undertaken during the pilot trial to understand whether the treatment technology used in hospitals can be more effective. Fortunately, this appears to be possible. The research demonstrates that the integration of Ozone and UV treatment (UV-O3) causes the breakdown of various medical residues and X-ray contrast solutions. With an average degradation of more than 80%, the predetermined target of the pilot trial was achieved.

The new treatment method is modular, flexible, and easy to apply to hospitals and sewage treatment plants. In Winterswijk (the Netherlands), for example, an extension is being built on the existing sewage treatment plant.

Taking steps togetherWith the Dutch chain approach 'medical residues from water', the National Government, the Water Authorities, the Drinking Water Companies, Municipalities, the pharmaceutical industry and parties from the healthcare sector, are working together to reduce medical residues in surface and groundwater.

This pilot is part of our commitment.

A closed-loop water concept for residential areas, helping to reduce the impact of water scarcity and provide water-on-demandIn many countries around the world, the water infrastructure consists of a linear system where centralised water companies and water authorities are managing the water demand. This linear system is also widely used by industries to regulate water supply and discharging wastewater. From the very first step to turn ground water into tap or industrial water and then back to ‘waste’ water, a system including kilometres of pipelines ensures everyone receives the correct amount of water. Or not?

Climate change is resulting in longer periods of drought, heavy rainfalls are resulting in flooding, and eventually entire ecosystems are collapsing. The ability to providing clean and safe water to a growing worldwide population, within the current linear water infrastructure, will therefore become increasingly difficult in the near future.

Decentralised solutions for residential areasThere is no time to lose: changing the water infrastructure is crucial to avoid system failure. First, spills can occur because rainwater enters the sewage, secondly, using drinking water for different kinds of applications is not always applicable. The Nijhuis Saur Industries team together with Semilla Sanitation took up the challenge and developed a solution that can replace the current linear system for decentralised residential areas. Thus, instead of linear systems, implementing revolutionary and adaptive small-scale closed loop water solutions for residential areas can provide on-demand water quality and valuable recovered resources.

Dutch households consume about two thirds of the water supplied by water companies in the Netherlands“ “

About the ‘Closed Loop Concept’ Closed Loop Water systems provide possibilities to solve many issues as previously described. In what is called a ‘Closed Loop Concept’ (CLC), water is provided for the correct application and needs to be used as efficiently as possible. The aim is to close local water loops and provide decentralised smart-scale solutions without the involvement of any central (waste)water treatment plant. Decentralised solutions will be installed at street and building level in rural, remote, and urban areas, which are water (H2O)-neutral and sewage- free.

A CLC consist of the following four treatment parts: rainwater, grey water, yellow water, and black water. The first of these, rainwater, is collected from the roofs and treated into drinking water. This water will be divided over the tap, shower, washing machine and dishwasher. The used water, or grey water, from these activities will then be treated again and reused for the washing machine and toilet water. During the next step, the toilet water (referred to as yellow and black water) will be treated into clean water and fertilizer. This step includes the removal of medical

resides. Lastly, the remaining treated yellow and black water will be infiltrated into the ground.

The first project to reduce household drinking water usage

The first project which will contain elements of the closed-loop water system will be delivered to a new-build residential area in the east-side of the Netherlands: ‘Heuvelstraat’ in a town called Silvolde. Nijhuis Saur Industries and Semilla Sanitation are closely working together with the municipality, water authorities and other partners to build this revolutionary concept as one of the solutions to reduce the impact of the local drought.

This iconic project will play a major role in setting an example in the Netherlands for reducing drinking water use for households and infiltrate clean water into the ground. In addition, environmental pollution will be reduced due to the removal of medical residues. Finally, green minerals such as fertiliser and compost are recovered from the water to avoid the loss of these valuable resources.

For the treatment of wastewater from a solid waste treatment facility in Italy, Nijhuis Saur Industries, in co-operation with WTT, is currently constructing an advanced clean water solution facility consisting of a prefabricated filter and DAF system, biological treatment and a prefabricated reverse osmosis system mounted in a container. This will in the end result in clean water and reduce leachate pollution.

To meet the stringent discharge limits of the local water authority and provide clean water to the environment, advanced treatment technologies are required to treat the leachate water and digestate streams from the facility. Around 60 m3/d of mixed water will be treated. Based on the unparalleled industrial engineering, manufacturing, installation and maintenance capabilities of Nijhuis Saur Industries, a smart treatment system which combines two streams will be implemented on the available plot of land. The system is expected to be in operation end of 2021.

The facility is equipped with a solid waste treatment system, provided by Waste Treatment Technologies from the Netherlands and treats approximately 100,000 t/a of organic waste, which includes a combination of food and leaf/yard waste. The waste is converted into compost and biogas. The biogas that is generated at the facility is collected, stored, treated and then converted into electricity and heat using a combined heat and power unit (CHP).

Why leachate treatment is important and what you need to knowIn biological solid waste treatment it is common that, depending on seasonality and waste composition, excess leachate is generated. If not managed properly this can cause significant threat to surface water and groundwater. The leachate composition from the composting and anaerobic digestion facility can vary depending on several factors, including waste composition, seasonality and moisture content in waste. As a general rule, leachate is characterised by a variety of pollutants, such as COD, ammonia nitrogen and heavy metals, as well as strong colour and bad odour effects. Special industrial water treatment experience and knowledge is necessary, due to the variation in pollutants as well as the pollution fluctuations, because of the changes in the house hold waste calendar. Leachate treatment technologies fall into two basic types, biological and physical/chemical.

Stringent discharge limits for waste treatment facilities are necessary to avoid large-scale municipal treatment modificationsSince more and more municipal water treatment plants face serious capacity challenges due to increased discharge standards, a decentralised and advanced ‘at the source’ water treatment solution at solid waste treatment facilities is necessary. It is more effective to treat the water ‘at the source’ which contains the highest pollution level. This will reduce the impact of polluted leachate water into the municipal water treatment plants, avoids additional investments of municipal plants and will help to build a more sustainable and resilient future.

The well-known prehistorical ‘Stonehenge’ monument, which is a World Heritage site, together with the world-class exhibition & visitor centre are managed by English heritage, who care for over 400 historic buildings, monuments and sites all over the United Kingdom. Stonehenge is one of the most visited attractions in the UK receiving over 1.6 million visitors a year. The site receives international visitors as well as national and is designed to provide all facilities needed when people are visiting, including excellent transport links, catering and other amenities on site.

Why water reuse is important at heritage sitesAs an ancient monument and a site of significant importance, all activities on site need to ensure the protection of the monument and the surrounding ground needs to be undisturbed. There are no connections to main services such as sewers and the water supply is provided by boreholes.

Nijhuis Saur Industries were invited in 2012 to firstly design and build a sewage treatment plant to include wastewater re-use system for 25 m3 of water per day. The plant designed as a ‘smart’ system consisted of a filter, aerobic MBR and carbon filter which together are designed to treat the sanitary water to a level capable of achieving the highest possible quality for discharge to ground but for primarily as water for toilet flushing systems.

The plant is designed to process wastewater flows from the site derived from a maximum daily visitor numbers of 7650 people and treat average crude influent strengths of 7344 mg/l COD, 3672 mg/l BOD and 1800 mg/l TSS. In addition, the plant has achieved a high level of treatment to meet the terms of the Environment Agency consent. The provision of full treatment on site therefore ensures a sustainable approach to dealing with the wastewater generated from the site and minimise the costs for removing waste from site by conventional methods.

Solution in more detailThe solution is a Nijhuis compact modular wastewater treatment and recycling plant, utilising a modular build concept to reduce the on-site installation works and the process and mechanical engineering design was undertaken to ensure that the height of the plant is kept at low level to enable it to be effectively screened.

The first pump pit receives all the untreated wastewater flow from site and pumps it to a Nijhuis Rotary Drum Screen feeding a Balance Tank. The main biological

treatment stage consists of a containerised anoxic & activated sludge process form the main treatment working together in series with an MBR (Membrane Bio-Reactor) module unit downstream which, separates the effluent from the biomass.

The biomass is fed back into the system or is wasted as needed to a sludge tank. The effluent is polished by a Nijhuis Carbo-Pure tertiary treatment unit before either being sent to a holding tank for use in the sites vacuum toilet system or is sent to a soak away.

As an ancient monument and a site of significant importance, all activities on site need to ensure the

protection of the monument and the surrounding ground needs to be undisturbed.

A solid example to reduce groundwater abstractionThe system will allow the final effluent to be recycled for non-potable uses, providing environmental benefits in terms of reducing the amount of water that the building needs to abstract from groundwater. As in this particular case, the historical ground needs to be kept in shape and large scale groundwater abstraction can have a dramatically effect on the ground and soil. In order to ensure the protection of the underlying chalk aquifer, a nitrate level has been imposed to protect the groundwater from any potential contamination.

Operation and maintenance to keep the plant in optimal conditionSince 2021, Nijhuis Saur Industries manages the operation and maintenance of the plant as well. The operation is 4 hours per day, 7 days a week. Global bank extends operation contract following successful cooling tower lifecycle upgrade A large global bank has extended the collaboration with Nijhuis Saur Industries for the operation and maintenance of their cooling towers at their global headquarters in England and other critical sites throughout the UK for a further 3 years until December 2024. During the lifecycle upgrade of the last month, Nijhuis Saur Industries has been given the opportunity to extend their services throughout the whole of the UK due to the increased national coverage afforded by the strengthened offering and more recently through the Saur acquisition.

In 2020, the Nijhuis Saur Industries team has put the finishing touch to the first lifecycle upgrade of the bank’s global headquarters critical cooling system which started 2 weeks before lockdown in March. This work extends the life of the plant for another 8-10 years and avoids a costly replacement which has had its challenges up on a roof of 44 stories. The cooling system cools a trading floor and datacentre as well as comfort cooling for the complete building. In normal situations Nijhuis was allowed to take 2 of 14 cooling towers offline at any point, but during lockdown the building occupancy went from 10,000 to 90. This allowed Nijhuis to work on 4 cooling towers at a time which is unprecedented.
