PICNIC JAZZ AT THE PAVILION

In 2003 a small committee was formed to organise a one off fundraising Black Tie Jazz Dinner to help raise funds for restoration work on St. Bartholomew’s Church in Orford.

A marquee was ordered, menus fixed, 250 tickets sold and a little known singer/pianist booked to entertain. Unfortunately, shortly before the event was due to take place, the little known entertainer hit the big time and had to pull out of his commitment in Orford.

The event went ahead with the captivating Victoria Newton proving to be a worthy replacement with her Latin American influenced performance encouraging the diners to work off the calories after dinner.

To make up for the cancellation the original singer/pianist offered another date and agreed to perform at a Picnic Jazz event later in the year in the gardens of The Pavilion on the river in Orford. As a result, Jamie Cullum was responsible for launching an event that has been repeated every year since then raising funds for local worthy causes and when Helen De Wynter sold the house the Nunn family kindly agreed to continue to host the event.

With a capacity limited to around 300, Jazz at The Pavilion has become a popular, intimate event on the Suffolk social calendar as well as attracting jazz lovers from further afield. Headline acts, in addition to Jamie Cullum, have included: Jacqui Dankworth, Gwyneth Herbert (twice), Sarah Moule, Joanna Eden, Liane Carroll, Clive Carroll, Toby Allen, Tina May with Tony Coe, John Etheridge, Winston Clifford and Mark Hodgson, The Melissa James Trio, The Anthony Strong Trio, Georgia Mancio, Polly Gibbons, Emma Divine, and Natasha Hodge with Jazz Bazaar. We have also been fortunate to have the talents of a young Ben Scarce in our early days and a not so young Nick Raison more recently to help raise funds for local good causes..

I have now decided to withdraw from the organising committee for

Jazz at The Pavilion and would like to thank everyone who has helped to make this event so successful. The organising team, the performers, the helpers and the audience have all contributed to making this one of the highlights of the year in Suffolk.

I understand that this year’s event will be on Sunday 26th July and details are available from Jacki Maslin.

Roger Hipwell YOUR PLACE, YOUR FUTURE

Suffolk Coastal has produced two Local Plan documents - Site Allocations and Area Specific Policies Development Plan Document, and Felixstowe Peninsula Area Action Plan, covering a range of topics including housing, employment, community provision and the environment.

This is your first opportunity to influence the preparation of these documents which once adopted will be an important part of the Suffolk Coastal Local Plan, as they will direct future development into the most suitable locations over the next 10 - 15 years.

The Council will be holding a series of informal drop in sessions that are planned to take place across the district, to enable as wide an audience as possible to have their say on the Issues and Options consultation documents. Officers will attend these drop in sessions to discuss the documents and how to respond to the consultation. The sessions have been arranged at a variety of locations and times across the district including Saxmundham Market Hall Thursday 29th January 14.00 - 17.00 Station Approach, Saxmundham, IP17 1AF. Council Chamber Monday 9th February 10.00 - 13.00 SCDC, Melton Hill, Woodbridge, IP12 1AU.

Suffolk Coastal launched this consultation on Friday 15th December 2014, comments on the Issues and Options documents can be made until Friday 27th February 2015 at 5.00pm.

As this is the first consultation stage in the preparation of the documents, the Council wants the views of everybody, including town and parish councils, residents associations, businesses, land owners, service providers and other stakeholders before any decisions are made. So get involved and help us shape the future of Suffolk Coastal.

Copies of the documents along with draft Sustainability Appraisal information is available for inspection on the Council’s website as well as at the Council Offices, Melton Hill, Woodbridge, IP12 1AU or public libraries during normal opening hours.

For further information relating to the Issues and Options consultation or any other aspect of the work and timescales for the Site Allocations and Area Specific Policies Development Plan Document and the Felixstowe Peninsula Area Action Plan, please contact the Planning Policy and Delivery Team via email to [email protected] or on 01394 444558 or 01394 444761

In 2015 Suffolk Family Carers will be working with our hospice colleagues in Suffolk to offer an information and support programme for those people caring for someone nearing the end of their life. There will be a series of five informal sessions that offer information and an opportunity to reflect and gain support from others in a similar situation. The programme will run around the County with the first ones starting end of January. It’s aim is to

improve the Family Carer’s own situation and that of the person they care for.

NATIONAL TRUST UPDATE

If I may, I would like to offer a point of gentle clarification on the report of the National Trust’s AGM by David Goldin that appeared in the January Village Voice.

Readers may have been left with the impression that there was

much support at the AGM for the resolutions that were tabled by Mr Goldin and his colleagues, and that they were only defeated (except for one) as a result of the National Trust’s Board of Trustees exercising discretionary postal votes. Alas - the truth is somewhat different!

The full results from the AGM are available for all to see on the National Trust’s website, and have been since November. The results as reported do not distinguish between those votes made by the few hundred members present at the AGM on the day and the many thousands of postal and online votes that were made in the weeks preceding the event. To imply that those members who voted ‘for’ the resolutions did so as a direct consequence of the debate in the hall is therefore misleading. The vast majority would have voted on the basis of the wording of the resolutions, without having had the benefit (as I did) of listening to the debate in person.

In truth there is no way of telling, from the numerical voting results alone, what the strength of opinion in the hall on the day was. My own memory of the event, for what it is worth, is that opinion was much more mixed. Nor was there anything especially controversial about the Board using ‘discretionary’ votes. These were the votes of individual members who had decided that they were happy for the Board to vote on their behalf. Their votes carried exactly the same status as other members’ votes - to discount them would be to disenfranchise a significant group of National Trust members.

It was reassuring to see that Mr Goldin felt the Trust was fully open to discussion of the issues raised in the Resolutions. It was also satisfying to read his words about the good-natured spirit in which the debate about the resolutions was conducted. We are always open to feedback, and take great care to respond to this openly and fully, especially when it comes directly from our members.

The Trust has certainly listened to all the points made at the AGM, in particular the resolution concerning the issue of members being charged at National Trust properties, which was the only resolution

that was carried. This resolution did not strictly relate to Orford Ness, as the proposer (Brian Clarke) specifically excluded charges made for transport costs (which is the case in relation to the Orford Ness ferry). But we have been carrying out our own analysis of those very few Trust places where members are charged, and will be keeping this under close review in future.

Finally, no reader needs to take either my, or David Goldin’s, word as final. Anyone can see a full video recording of the debate for themselves at our website (http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/agm/) and reach their own view on the issues raised. As ever I would be very interested to hear any feedback, either on the points raised at the AGM or on any other aspect of our work at Orford Ness.

THE ALDE AND ORE ESTUARY PARTNERSHIP

Enabling Development

The AOEP has appointed The Landscape Partnership as independent consultants to help support the enabling development programme which aims to fund part of the upgrading of the river defences, detailed in the Estuary Plan. 39 agricultural sites have been offered by local landowners who support this innovative

funding scheme for exceptional planning permission, provided all the proceeds from the increased value of the land (with planning permission) are held by the charity set up by the Partnership with the objective of maintaining the estuary flood defences.

These planning permissions will give no financial gain to the landowner other than the existing value of the land. There will also be tight conditions on the location of these enabling development sites. The number of houses on each site will be limited to a sustainable number within the parish and they should be sensitive to the landscape, environment and biodiversity and built to a high standard of design and energy efficiency as set out in the guidelines agreed by SCDC. Conversions or re-use of redundant or disused buildings will also come within the enabling development strategy.

The Estuary Plan

The Estuary Plan is at present with Suffolk County Council for the Sustainability Appraisal and it is hoped the Scoping Report will be

available for consultation by mid-end March. This goes to the Environment Agency, Natural England and English Heritage for their comments which should be available by end May. At the same time the Internal Drainage Board (IDB) will be working on Project Appraisal Report (PAR) with the help of Karen Thomas who moves from the Environment Agency (EA) to the IDB in January. This work, which is carried on concurrently and interweaves with the enabling development programme and the Estuary Plan, will ultimately release Flood Defence Grant in Aid (FDGiA) funds from the EA for upgrading work on defences pro rata to their benefit to cost ratio.

Snape

The Partnership has been closely involved in the repair work for the north Snape wall of which has been successfully repaired by the IDB before the end of last year and will help defend the Snape village homes that were flooded following the devastating surge tide in December 2013. The remainder of the wall will be repaired as soon as the marsh has dried out as waterlogged ground makes it impossible to transport the clay to the wall. The wall withstood the surge tide on January 10th, which is encouraging. Both the EA and Professor Pye are assessing flow data collected in November for the upper estuary at Snape and Butley which will help to construct options for a major capital scheme to be discussed later in the year for both flood cells either side of the river at Snape. This work will also feed into the Estuary Plan and be assessed in the Sustainability Appraisal.

Slaughden Coastal Defences

The EA hope to import some 20,000 tonnes of rock armour to reinstate groynes and install sea wall toe protection at Slaughden. Approximately 7-8000 tonnes of shingle have been stockpiled around the Martello Tower which will be used to locally recharge beach levels once the rock has been installed. Provided designs and fast tracking the relevant licences are agreed the work should start in mid/late Spring.

SUFFOLK FAMILY CARERS

Suffolk Family Carers is a local charity that provides information, support and guidance to Family Carers around Suffolk. We have been offering our services for over 25 years and one of the things we have learnt during that time is that people caring for another person at home, perhaps a family member or friend don’t usually see themselves as a Family Carer, they just see it as part of being husband, wife, father, mother, daughter, son, friend etc. Because of this, it becomes so easy to forget the importance of your own health and wellbeing as all of your physical and emotional effort and energy is spent on looking after that person, and others who may be involved such as siblings. You may feel that your own needs do not matter at this time, but in order to provide care and support you do need to keep your own batteries charged.

Page 4: Edited by: Roger Hipwell Published by: Orford and Gedgrave ... · result, Jamie Cullum was responsible for launching an event that has been repeated every year since then raising

TOWN HALL CINEMA

We published an article in the January Village Voice asking for help with supporting the future of the Town Hall Cinema both in terms of volunteers/committee members and audience figures. After a promising Special General Meeting on January 7th, the Town Hall Cinema is pleased to have a full cohort of committee members/volunteers and a treasurer and secretary for 2015, with many new members in attendance.

Now we need to increase the number of people attending each screening so that we are able to cover the costs of the hire of the Town Hall and the licence fees to the various film distributors.

We will be starting the 2015 season with a screening of Oh What A Lovely War (PG) on 13th February 7.00pm at Orford Town Hall.

We encourage anyone interested in the cinema to attend our next meeting on 25th February at 7.00pm at Pump Street Bakery. At this meeting we will be electing a new chairperson as Joanna Brennan will be standing down for maternity leave. Anyone interested in this role is welcome to speak to any of the committee members who would be happy to answer any questions or email [email protected]"

THE KING’S HEAD

Wow that’s a month of 2015 gone already - how time flies.

The Twixmas Quiz raised £120 cash for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices and this was delivered along with the raffle and quiz prizes, kindly donated back, to The Treehouse in Ipswich. They were delighted to receive these and wanted us to thank everyone for their generous donations. It is a very impressive centre and we

are proud to support their good works.

Following the success of our Twixmas Quiz, our monthly quiz nights continue on the last Sunday of the month. In February that will be the 22nd. Remember if you are lucky enough to win you not only get the pot of money but the privilege of setting the questions for the next one.

The King’s Head refurbishment plans continue with The Kings Marsh room fully refurbished, the hallway to the letting rooms refurbished and the dining room redecorated. The soft furnishings in the bar are currently being refurbished and Shipwash is the next bedroom on the agenda for refurbishment. This is where you can possibly help us, no we don’t mean by coming in and painting, but does anyone have any pictures of the Shipwash Lightship we can get copied. If you do that would be fantastic.

In addition, we have been advised by Adnams that the car park, quagmire, is scheduled to be sorted out by Easter. So you will no longer need to wade through puddles and fight your way through

the swamp to get from the car park to the pub. An update on progress of this to follow.

We recommenced our tour of the world’s cuisines again in January with a journey over to Europe, with Italy. On 20th February we go slightly further afield with a trip all the way to China. We are going to be celebrating the Chinese New Year with a wonderful banquet. Please book early to avoid disappointment.

For all of you romantics out there don’t forget the big Saturday 14th - Valentine’s Day. Chef Louis and Suzanne are in the throws of finalising the menu now, ready for publication. Loads of romantic treats, with all of the foods of love. So why not treat the special one in your life to a night out at The King’s Head.

The wood burners are on every day to drive away the winter chill and we look forward to seeing you all in February. Come in and warm

up and get an equally warm welcome.

Thanks for all of your support.
