US singer Katy Perry arrives for the European Premiere of her latest film ‘Part of Me 3D’, at Leicester Square in London on July 3, 2012.

Days after his wife filed for divorce, apparently taking him by surprise, ques-tions are stacking up about the role of his controversial Scientologist faith at the end of his five-year marriage to Katie Holmes.

The “Top Gun” actor -- who has been in Iceland shooting his latest movie ahead of the landmark birthday, accord-ing to reports -- has remained tightlipped since his wife’s bombshell announce-ment last week.

“Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children,” his spokesman said Friday, adding nothing since despite mounting speculation about

what led to Holmes’s decision.Their fairytale love affair had started

so well. Cruise famously jumped up and down on Oprah Winfrey’s couch professing his love for Holmes during a whirlwind courtship that culminated in a proposal under the Eiffel Tower.

But the divorce will be the third for Cruise, following his marriage to US actress Mimi Rogers from 1987-1990 and Australian Nicole Kidman from 1990-2001. He also had a three-year relationship with Spanish star Penelope Cruz.

Critics might suggest that, for all his blockbuster achievements on the big

screen over the three decades, Cruise has been less successful in his personal life.

And he now faces a court battle royale for custody of the couple’s six-year-old daughter Suri, after reports that Holmes is seeking sole custody because she fears Cruise wants to draw the child deeper into Scientology.

A lawyer for the Church of Scientology -- of which Cruise is a prominent member -- denied Monday sending anyone to fol-low Holmes, or that Cruise wanted Suri to join the Sea Organization, described as a boot camp for the religion.

“There is no truth whatsoever to the TMZ.com report (or any other report) that the Church of Scientology has sent anyone to follow or surveil Katie Hol-mes,” lawyer Gary Soter told AFP in an emailed letter.

Actor Andy Griffith, 86, a beloved icon of US television for programs including “The Andy Griffith Show” in the 1960s and the popular legal drama “Matlock,” died Tuesday, US media reported.

Griffith, who was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by then president George W. Bush in 2005, died at his North Carolina home, according to media reports.

He became a household name for his eponymous series. He also played the sheriff in “Mayberry RFD,” set in the same fictional town as “The Andy Griffith Show,” said to be modeled on his hometown of Mount Airy, North Carolina.

Griffith sang in church as a

child, and joined a university drama club before becoming a teacher after graduating, according to industry daily Variety. He got his big break in the 1950s when Ed Sullivan began featuring him on his national television show.

His most notable big screen role was in Elia Kazan’s “A Face in the Crowd” (1957), playing a country boy who rises to TV stardom in a performance described as “stun-ning” by industry database IMDb.

After a stint on Broadway he launched “The Andy Griffith Show,” along with a young Ron Howard, who was later Richie Cunningham in “Happy Days” before a successful film career.

Bali PostNEGARA - The filthy condition of Ijo Gading River

dividing the heart of Negara City is not only filled with rubbish but also affected by a billion Rupiah project a few years ago as some of its jogging track remains hit the river. Jembrana Regent, I Putu Artha, not long ago stated that government will ask for Ijo Gading’s support to be repaired as it is damaged and very filthy. This has been suggested to the Bali-Penida River Board. “That support was using the disaster budget and it resulted like that. Nowe we will suggest a repair,”

Artha stated. Head of Jembrana Public Works Agency, Gusti Putu

Mertadana, last Tuesday (3/7) stated that this year the Agency is suggesting the project to this year’s budget. It is fixed not only because it’s damaged, but erosion has been unable to be controlled and government doesn’t want to put locals in danger. Besides this river, a support in a river at Melaya is also suggested yet the government wanted to repair Ijo Gading at first. The situation in Ijo Gading also caused Jembrana unable to get the Adipura award as it is still being polluted. (kmb26)

According to a former official in the Bangli Public Works, the incineration of medical waste did not only spread fatality ‘terror’ to surrounding residents, but also had psychological impact on the residents, especially children. “When the incinerator is oper-ated, it is followed by whiff of black smokes and ashes fall on our residential area. As a result, we have to lock our children in the room. It is very painful for us,” said Yasa accompanied by a number of residents such as Dewa Nyoman Lanus.

Indeed, revealed Yasa, his party hoped the cases could be resolved legally. Unfortunately, having been reported to police a year ago, so far there was no re-sponse. “We have crossed check the continuation of the case han-dling to Bali Police and Bangli Police. But, they just advised us to be patient because police have not had a device to perform the measurement,” said Nyoman Yasa while adding the response given by the officer was quite painful because the Ministry of Environment (KLH) through one of the officers, Marditya Bayu Mardjanto, stated the pol-

lution yielded by incineration of medical waste had exceeded the threshold. “Ideally, the officers should make coordination with the Ministry of Environment,” he said.

Residents also urged the Re-gent of Bangli, I Made Gianyar, to immediately take decisive measures namely relocating the incinerator to other location that would not have an impact on the residential neighborhood. “When we met the regent, he has prom-ised to resolve this problem, so that we expect him to take con-crete measures,” he said.

On that occasion, the resi-dents living around the Bangli Hospital, particularly those af-flicted by the impact of such pollution, regretted the atti-tude of hospital management because it seemed indifferent to the complaints revealed by residents. The management exactly knew about the impact of the pollution they did. “The environmental pollution they generated is very severe and we have become the victims. Meanwhile, they do not care about us,” said Yasa supported by other residents. (kmb)

Bali PostDENPASAR - After getting an-

other tender for its construction, Gunung Agung Street traditional market managed to be completed. The market built above a former cargo terminal became a place for 142 sellers in los and 10 in kiosks. Head of Denpasar Housing and Spatial Planning, I Made Kusuma Diputra, accompanied by Denpasar

Market Management Head, I Made Westra, when met during the market’s religious inauguration last Tuesday (3/7) stated the first step of the repair has been completed fully while the next step go on. Sellers who have placed themselves here will go back here and have been on date. During the renovation they were relocated to Kompang Sujana Field at Merpati Street, West Denpasar.

The project that has been developed since July 2011 took a budget of IDR 2.786.939.000. Yet it was not done and have finished IDR 1.6 billion. Until end of 2011, the project was then resumed by its tender moved to CV Mitra Tehnik Utama who started working 13th March 2012. For its second step it reached IDR 1.3 billion meaning for this market it finished IDR 2.9 billion to build. (kmb12)

Environmental pollution progressively worryingBali Post

BANGLI — residents around the Bangli Hospital threat-ened to rally to the hospital following the growing impact of the environmental pollution caused by incineration of medical waste carried out by the hospital. Action of the residents was the peak of their resentment having failed to take persuasive measures like reporting the case to police and meeting the regent of Bangli but no results. “How long will we become the victims of pollution carried out by Bangli Hospital? We have taken dialogue, but it failed,” said Sang Nyoman yasa, one of the residents met in Bangli.

In Bali, the circulation of ille-gal or fake drug, food and bever-age as well as cosmetic products remained fairly widespread. To anticipate the ubiquitous circula-tion of those illegal products, in the near future the BBPOM Bali will establish a Task Force for Il-legal Drugs and Food Eradication. It was expressed by the Head of BBPOM Bali, Corry Pandjaitan, accompanied by the Head of In-spection and Investigation, I Gusti Ayu Adhi Aryapatni in Denpasar.

According to Corry, the Task Force was announced by Vice President at the beginning of 2011. She added the Task Force would consist of a joint team from vari-ous agencies. “It will comprise the element of police, prosecutor, government, health agency, cus-toms and other relevant agencies,” she said.

Eradication of illegal drug, food and beverage as well as cos-metics aimed at guaranteeing the public health because the quality of those illegal products could not be accounted. In addition, establishment of the Task Force also posed a measure to ensure the sustainability of the domestic

industry. The main target of the Task Force was importers bringing in food supplies from overseas and the distributors. To enforce the law against those illegal products, her party would involve all the ele-ments related to the law.

“We always keep an eye on the products in circulation the field and get around throughout the re-gions in Bali. Even, the dominant products in the market are alleged to come from China,” he said.

Based on the result of illegal drugs and food eradication made by BBPOM Bali until the begin-ning of 2012, it had exterminated 2,173 items consisting of 53,059 packages estimated to value at IDR 560,189, 793. Such amount was considered to decrease if compared to the findings in 2009 and 2010 where in 2009 was found 10,727 items and 150,073 pack-ages worth over IDR 2 billion. Meanwhile, in 2010 the findings amounted to 5,508 items and 72,325 packages estimated to value at more than IDR 989 mil-lion.

In the meantime, based on the criminal investigation of drug and food until July 2012, BBPOM Bali

was also dealing with three cases of finding, where a case was under the trial process, while two others were in the process of filing or investigation.

At the moment, Corry admit-

ted the punishment sentenced to violators infringing the provi-sions of drug and food distribu-tion was still light whereas the health risk due to such illegal products was very severe. Among

the cases coming into the realm of law, some had obtained court decision but she said the convic-tion was too light and did not result in a deterrent effect to violators. (kmb28)

NEW YORK — In the 1982 sci-fi movie “Blade Runner,” there are hints that the hero, played by Harrison Ford, is an artificial human — an “android” or “replicant.” His job is to go out and kill other, rogue androids.

If he’s an android, he’s of the lat-est model, Nexus 7. That’s also the name Google Inc. has picked for the first tablet to bear the Google brand. Clearly, its mission is to go out and kill rogue tablets running Google’s Android software.

Specifically, the Nexus 7 seems to have been designed to give anyone who bought a Kindle Fire from Amazon.com Inc. or a Nook Tablet from Barnes & Noble Inc. a lethal case of buyer’s remorse.

The Nexus 7 costs $199, the same that Amazon and Barnes & Noble charge for their tablets. But it’s better than theirs in significant ways, as it became clear to me after a couple of days of use. Google announced the tablet last week and is taking pre-orders for delivery in mid-July.

Why is Google targeting the Kindle Fire and the Nook Tablet? Because they’ve been relatively successful com-petitors to Apple Inc.’s iPad tablet, yet Google is getting no benefit from their success.

Google makes its Android operating software available for any device manu-facturer to use. Amazon and Barnes & Noble took Android and modified it heav-ily. Namely, they took out the applica-tions that point to Google’s services and the advertising it sells. Instead, the apps point to the companies’ own stores.

In other words, these tablets are rogue Androids.

Other tablets, such as Samsung’s Galaxy, use the “proper,” Googlish ver-sion of Android, but they’ve been more expensive than the Kindle Fire and Nook Tablet. Apparently, Google thought it was time to make a really good, proper Android tablet for $199.

The Nexus 7 is a plain black slab with a screen that’s 7 inches on the diagonal — the same size as the Nook and the Fire. The most noticeable fea-ture it has over the competition is a

low-resolution camera, facing the user. That means the Nexus 7 can be used for videoconferencing, but it’s nearly impossible to use for snapshots. It also has a microphone, which the Fire lacks, making Amazon’s device useless even for audio conferencing.

The screen has a higher resolution than the Fire, and colors look more viv-id. The whole tablet is slightly thinner and appreciably lighter than the Fire.

Other nifty but invisible hardware up-grades on the Nexus 7 include Bluetooth and GPS chips for use with headsets and navigation software. The tablet even has a chip for near-field communications, which means it can “talk” to some phones and store payment terminals when tapped against them. I used the Nexus 7 to pay for toilet paper in a drugstore.

But the most important difference between the Nexus 7 and its prey is the software. Not only is it running stock Android, but it’s also the first device to run the latest version of Android. Google, with its trademark combination of cute and cutthroat, calls it “Jelly Bean.”

It was certainly a diverse col-lection of creations from A-lines to dropped waists, palettes that were muted or bright, and styles spanning decades.

But Tuesday’s shows had one key thing in common: imagina-tion.

“Haute couture will exist as long as people want to dream,” Didier Grumbach told The Associ-ated Press.

The French fashion president, one of the most discreet yet pow-erful figures in the world of fash-ion thus answers detractors who predict the demise of the age-old tradition.

Grumbach believes that couture — an artisanal clothes-making method that exists only in Paris— has many healthy years ahead.

Haute couture exists against all the odds: creations which range in price from $19,000 to $125,000 being bought by women thought to number no more than 100 in the world.

“But Armani’s coming here to Paris, it shows that fashion needs haute couture. ... It’s not just about selling clothes: it’s an advert, an ideas factory,” added Grumbach.

Strong showings both from Ar-mani Prive and Chanel prove that couture — 150 years since its birth — still has a lot to say.

On day two of Paris’ haute couture week, Giorgio Armani took fashion on a midnight romance, Steph-ane Rolland channeled Supergirl-style capes and Chanel got nostalgic for past vintage styles.

“We call for the formation of an international investigation commit-tee modelled on the international investigation committee set up to look into the assassination of for-mer Lebanese prime minister Rafiq Hariri,” senior Palestinian official Saeb Erakat said.

The call came a day after the Al-Jazeera news channel broadcast the results of an investigation into the death of Arafat, who died in 2004, which showed that the Palestinian leader might have been poisoned with polonium.

The news channel said an analy-sis of Arafat’s belongings, which were given to his wife by the Paris hospital where he died, showed high levels of the radioactive substance.

Polonium was used to kill Rus-sian former spy turned Kremlin critic Alexander Litvinenko, who died in 2006 after drinking tea laced with the substance at a Lon-don hotel.

Francois Bochud, head of the Institute of Radiation Physics at the University of Lausanne, was

among the scientists who worked with Al-Jazeera to analyse Arafat’s death and test his possessions.

“The conclusion was that we did find some significant polonium that was present in these samples,” he told Al-Jazeera.

Arafat, a Nobel Peace Prize winner who led the struggle for Palestinian statehood for nearly four decades, died on November 11, 2004, following several weeks of treatment.

He had been airlifted to France from his besieged headquarters in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

French officials, citing privacy laws, refused to reveal the precise cause of death or the nature of his condition, fuelling a host of ru-mours and theories as to the cause of his illness.

At the time of his death at the age of 75, Palestinian officials charged he had been poisoned by long-time foe Israel, but an incon-clusive Palestinian investigation in 2005 ruled out cancer, AIDS or poisoning.

To confirm the theory that he

was poisoned by polonium it would be necessary to exhume and analyse Arafat’s remains, Bochud said.

“If (Suha Arafat) really wants to know what happened to her husband (we need) to find a sample -- I mean, an exhumation... should

provide us with a sample that should have a very high quantity of polonium if he was poisoned,” he said.

GIANYAR - After discussed for so long, the Mandala Wisata Sam-uantiga Stage, Bedulu, Blahbatuh, Gianyar, will be renovated with budget IDR 223 million. Yet locals think this budget doesn’t make sense knowing it only consists of replacing old roof tiles with new ones also replacing holed ceilings as stated last Tuesday (3/7).

The locals met around Sam-uantiga Temple admitted to not know what the renovation is going to be like, yet it seemed it’s only a low repairing.

“We indeed target that protocol roads downtown Denpasar can be cleaned up from the presence of vile stalls as of December 2012,” said the Head of Public Order Officer and Municipal Security Guard of Denpasar, Ida Bagus Alit Wiradana, Tuesday (Jul 3).

Alit Wiradana accompanied by the Division Head of Social Order Facility (KFS), IGN Budhy Sury-awan, confirmed that his party had been working with headmen across Denpasar City to jointly keep the environment clean. They were spearheading of the lowest govern-ment so that they know best about the real conditions of their envi-ronment whether it was clean or dirty. “We do hope the cooperation with the headmen could increase the participation of community in keeping the neighborhood from the onslaught of waste as well as preventing the emergence of vile stalls that had been cleaning up by degrees,” he said.

According to Alit Wiradana,

the discipline against vile stalls along the main roads that dis-rupted the view was carried out persuasively. Affirmed, his party always approached the offenders and gave guidance in relation to the Regional Regulation No. 3/2000 on Sanitation and Public Order so that they were aware of their offenses. “The discipline we do is always with persuasive approach so the offenders will be aware of their violations,” said the former Subdistrict Head of West Denpasar.

Budhy Suryawan added the breakthrough taken by the Head of Public Order Officer and Munici-pality Security Guard, Ida Bagus Alit Wiradana, was responded positively by his subordinates. Monday (Jul 2), his party had disciplined 11 vile stalls where six of them were located on Jalan Mandala Sari and five others located on Jalan Raya Puputan, Renon. Affirmed, those vile stalls should be dismantled by the own-

ers to keep the environment clean and beautiful. “We directly ask the owners of vile stall to dismantle their stall and clean it up and then fence it by zinc sheets,” he said.

Budhy Suryawan said that his

party also summoned the stall owners in order they no longer did selling in the region. Even, they had signed a statement to no longer do selling on Jalan Man-dala Sari and Jalan Raya Puputan.

“We have also made coordination with local headmen in order they could actively participate in the supervision so the vile stalls will no longer appear in the region,” he said. (kmb13)

SYDNEY — Australian rescuers were trying to help a migrant-filled boat in bad weather and rough seas off Indonesia on Wednesday, a day after the countries agreed to strengthen maritime ties to combat people smuggling.

The wooden boat issued a dis-tress call Wednesday morning and was believed to have up to 180 people on board, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority said. Its initial location was 50 miles (80 kilometers) southwest of Panaitan, a small island off the western end of the main Java island, but by afternoon, it had drifted within 180 miles (290 kilometers) of Christmas Island, Indonesian officials said.

The territory is nearer to Indone-sia than to the Australian mainland and is a popular destination for asylum seekers. Australia holds migrants in a detention center there while their asylum claims are heard.

Poor weather was preventing res-cuers on the Australian naval ship HMAS Wollongong from boarding the migrants’ boat, the maritime authority said. An Indonesian plane and navy ship were returning home from the scene as the boat moved closer to Christmas Island, said Gagah Prakoso, a spokesman for its National Search and Rescue Agency.

The boat was intact and though the initial report was that it was tak-ing on water, the precise problem was unclear, Australian officials said. Prakoso said all the passengers were still on board.

“(Rescuers) found that there were no visible signs of distress, but I do need to emphasize this — the weather conditions out there at the moment are very rough,” Home Affairs Minister Jason Clare told reporters.

Australia’s debate over how to cope with the increasing flow of asylum seekers has intensified since two boats carrying Australia-bound

migrants capsized in the last two weeks. More than 90 people are be-lieved to have died when the boats sank in the Indian Ocean.

Australia’s Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono dis-cussed how to handle the politically charged problem, along with eco-nomic and trade issues, at a meeting in the northern town of Darwin on Tuesday.

Gillard said Australia would work with Indonesia’s maritime search and rescue agency to help strengthen its communication abili-ties with vessels during sea disasters and would look into an exchange program of search and rescue spe-cialists.

Australia is a common desti-nation for boats carrying asylum seekers from Afghanistan, Iraq, Sri Lanka and other poor or war-ravaged countries. Many travel first to Indonesia before aiming for Aus-tralian territory in rickety, crowded fishing boats.

BUCHAREST — Romania’s governing coalition says it will begin impeachment proceedings against President Traian Basescu, the latest move in a bitter power struggle between the president and the prime minister.

Eugen Nicolaescu, a Liberal Party lawmaker, said that the left-leaning government will submit impeachment documents in Parlia-ment later Wednesday. Nicolaescu

declined to why center-right Bas-escu should be impeached, but the coalition has accused him of overstepping his authority and unfairly meddling in the country’s institutions.

On Tuesday, lawmakers ousted the speakers of both houses of parlia-ment— each one a Basescu ally — and replaced them with politicians close to Prime Minister Victor Ponta. The president and prime minister have been jockeying for power since Ponta was elected May 7.

General Motors, Ford and Chrysler all reported a steady rise of US sales year-on-year despite the economy’s second-quarter soft spot, with GM’s and Chrysler’s increases in double digits.

GM reported June US sales of 248,750 vehicles, up 16 percent from a year ago and the com-pany’s highest monthly sales since September 2008. Divisions Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Ca-dillac all reported double-digit increases.

GM, the largest US automak-er, scored a 32 percent increase in Chevrolet Malibu sales and a 21 percent increase in Buick

LaCrosse sales.“Across the board, June was a

strong month for GM,” said Kurt McNeil, vice president for US sales operations.

“The combination of new products, available credit, lower fuel prices and modest eco-nomic growth was a stronger influence on consumer behavior than economic and political un-certainty.”

Chrysler sales improved by 20 percent as the automaker posted its best June figures in five years, 144,811 units, and its second quarter was 24 percent higher than the same period in 2011.

Jeep brand sales were up 23

percent, their best June since 2007, with the Cherokee deliver-ing its best June since 2005.

“Continuous improvement re-mains a key focus at Chrysler as we have steadily increased sales, improved quality, added produc-tion and created jobs,” said Reid Bigland, head of US sales.

Ford, the only one of the Big Three to survive the 2008 eco-nomic crash without a govern-ment bailout, reported a more modest 7.0 percent year-on-year gain with 207,759 vehicles sold.

FRANKFURT - The condi-tions are in place for the German economy, Europe’s biggest, to recover this year -- and lead the eurozone back to growth -- unless the crisis intensifies further, the IMF warned on Tuesday.

“Several conditions are in place in Germany for a domestic demand-led recovery following the downturn at end-2011,” the In-ternational Monetary Fund wrote in a new report on Germany.

Germany’s economic perfor-mance throughout the crisis so far “has been remarkable, despite a difficult environment,” the head of the IMF mission to Germany, Subir Lall, told a telephone con-ference call. Germany expanded strongly for most of last year, but growth shuddered to a halt in the final quarter, when it contracted by 0.2 percent.

Nevertheless, the dip was only short-lived and gross domestic product (GDP) rebounded again to expand by 0.5 percent in the first three months of this year.

While the IMF was pencilling in much slower GDP rowth of around 0.1 percent in the second quarter, the economy would gather momentum and reach its potential for growth of around 1.25 percent in the second half of the year, Lall said.

Healthy corporate and house-hold balance sheets, higher wages, well anchored inflation expectations, and low borrow-ing costs would act as a boost by keeping domestic demand strong, the IMF said.

Taking 2012 as a whole, the fund said it was projecting GDP to expand by 1.0 percent, down from 3.1 percent in 2011. Growth would then pick up to 1.4 pre-cent in 2013, it predicted. The near-term outlook was, however, “clouded by a number of down-side risks,” the IMF cautioned.

The biggest of these would be a possible further intensification of the eurozone’s sovereign debt crisis, “which would spill over into Germany directly through real and financial channels, and indirectly through dampened business and consumer sentiment,” it said.

PARIS - The US aircraft maker Boeing raised its 20-year forecast for global demand for airliners by $500 billion (396 billion euros) on Tuesday. Boeing said it now saw the global market doubling to 34,000 airliners worth $4,500 billion, from 33,500 aircraft worth $4,000 billion which it had forecast last year.

“The world’s aviation market is broader, deeper and more diverse than we’ve ever seen it,” said Randy Tinseth, vice president of marketing at Boeing Commercial Airplanes.

“It has proven to be resilient even during some very challeng-ing years and is driving production rate increases across the board,” he added in a statement.

Boeing based its forecast on an assumption that airline traffic would grow by five percent each year for the next two decades. Its main rival, the European manufacturer Airbus, also

expects traffic to increase at about this rate. The biggest increase in deliveries will be to the Asia-Pacific region.

Boeing expects that about one third of all airliners built, or about 12,030 planes, will be delivered there.

“As the market continues to grow, especially in emerging economies, air travel will become affordable to even more people,” Tinseth explained.

The company highlighted de-mand for single-aisle aircraft such as its 737 model, which is being trans-formed into two new versions and which Boeing expected to continue posting “robust growth” in sales.

At an estimated 23,240 aircraft over the period in question, that segment represented almost three times more than twin isle jets, at 7,950, though the forecast market value of twin aisle jets was slightly greater, at 2.08 trillion dollars.

Large jets like the double-decker Airbus A380, for which Boeing makes no equivalent model, were

estimated by the US manufacturer at a much more modest 790 aircraft worth 280 billion dollars.

Meanwhile, Boeing lowered its forecast for deliveries of cargo planes owing to a slowing of the market for air freight. Even so, it said that the market for cargo aircraft would almost double from 1,740 planes in 2012 to 3,200 in 2031.

Boeing also reacted to news that Airbus planned to build its rival to the 737, the Airbus A320 series, in the United States to ward off the negative effects of the euro’s value against the dollar. Tinseth said that “it’s not about the address on your business card” but the quality of the aircraft a company offers that would decide whether US clients bought more of their jets from one company or another.

“The first lever is the product, the capability, the quality and the price of the product, If you have the right product, you’ll be successful,” he told a telephone news conference.

KARANGASEM - The chicken egg price keep on increasing in Karan-gasem’s markets which usually it’s IDR 25,000 per tray (30 eggs) now reached IDR 30,000 – 31,000 per tray as seen last Tuesday (3/7). At Karang-sokong Market prices going up are not only on eggs but also on essentials,

flowers, fruits and young coconut leaves (used to make offerings).

Sellers Ni Nyoman Ranis and Nengah Sarda from Pesedahan, Manggis, Karangasem, last Monday (2/7) stated that the high price have been going on for a few days now where flowers such as gumitir reach-ing IDR 8,000 per kg, pacar flowers reached IDR 8,000 per kg when

usually IDR 3,000 per kg, while 200 young coconut leaves reached IDR 40,000 instead of usual price IDR 24,000. Bananas reached IDR 5,000 per three pieces intead of IDR 800 per piece, 50 pieces of saba ba-nana reached IDR 25,000 from IDR 15,000, one small bottle of coconut oil reached IDR 8,000 from IDR 6,000. This significant increase hap-

pens due its market being strategic on the Amlapura-Candidasa route and Sarda thinks it has gone up due to the Purnama (full moon) day on Tuesday which there is a ceremony on Bugbug village. The essential price increase happens almost on all kiosks and markets of Karan-gasem where quality rice reached IDR 8,000 from IDR 7,250, sugar

reaching IDR 14,000 per kg from IDR 11,000 per kg. This seemed to be happening also due to the fasting month coming. Karangasem Trade and Industry Agency hasn’t been planning to do any disciplinary operation as the price is not highly increasing and it seemed to be be-cause of the religious ceremonies happening. Chief Representative of Bank In-donesia for Bali and Nusra Region III, Dwi Pranoto, said the economic slowdown was inseparable from the condition of world economy that had not indicated a positive devel-opment. “The sluggish economic condition of Europe and the United

States, at least definitely affected the economies of Asia, including Indonesia and Bali in particular,” said Dwi Pranoto, Tuesday (Jul 3).

He estimated the development of national economic this year would not be encouraging. National economic growth in 2012 was esti-

mated to reach 6.3 percent--6.7 per-cent with the concern of threat to the decrease in consumption and slow-ing exports. Nevertheless, the Bali’s economy in 2012 was forecast to continuously grow by 6.2 percent - 6.6 percent, where tourism industry as the backbone of Bali’s economy was projected to persistently grow and encourage the increase in the sector of services as well as export in the field of services.

“Although the economy of Bali experienced a slowdown in the first quarter, the potential of growth in the future is still very good. It is re-

flected in the performance of banks in the region of Bali,” he said.

According to him, the total amount of bank lending in Bali in the first quarter of 2012 reached IDR 31.85 trillion. That number continued to increase to IDR 32.52 trillion in April 2012. Meanwhile, the loan-to-deposit ratio (LDR) of banking in Bali also indicated an increasing trend. For comparison, in the first quarter of 2011 the LDR was noted to attain 65.79 percent. Then, in the first quarter of 2012 increased to 67.92 percent and con-tinued to increase to 68.58 percent

in April 2012.“Such condition suggests that

banks are still expanding due to the economic sectors in Bali showed the potential of positive growth,” he said.

He added that mostly or virtu-ally 99 percent of business entities in Bali so far were classified into small-medium enterprises (SMEs). It was clearly indicated by the credit distribution of banks in Bali domi-nated by the credit share of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, namely reaching 80.5 percent. (kmb27)

The number, however, was 2.12 percent smaller than in the previous month,BPS head Gede Suarsa said here on Tuesday.

The visitors came mainly from Australia, followed by China, Malaysia, Japan and South Korea, Gede Suarsa said, adding Australian tour-ists made up 27.8 percent of the total.

The v i s i to r s in May brought the total number of foreign tourists to Bali to 1.16 million in the first five months of this year, up from 1.06 million in the same pe-riod in 2011.

The exercise of Indonesian Army Spe-cial Force (Kopasus) and the People`s Liberation Army of China (PLA) in Jinan, Shandong Province, was jointly opened by Kopassus Commander Major General Wisnu Bawa Tenaya and PLA Commander May Gen Qiu Xing here on Tuesday.

The objective of Knife Sharp 2012 was to enhance the two country`s cooperation in their fight against terrorism.

Indonesian Embassy`s Defence Attach for China, Col Lek Surya Margono, said the training was also aimed at improving the coordination between Kopasus and PLA.

Meanwhile, Indonesian National De-fence Forces (TNI) Chief Admiral Agus Suhartono, in a written statement read out by Wisnu Bawa Tenaya, said the military of Indonesia and China were committed to maintaining regional stability and world peace.

“Indonesia and China, including the

military of the two countries, are commit-ted to building cooperation and maintain-ing regional stability and world peace,” Agus stated.

The military of the two countries should build a consensus in order to face asymmetric threats such as terrorism and cross-country crimes effectively, he added.

“Military cooperation between the two countries is also needed to build defense capacity in order to maintain peace and security in the region,” Agus explained.

“In this regard, Indonesia and China are part of the world community, who have an international responsibility to maintain regional peace, security, and stability,” he added.

AntaraJAKARTA - Indonesia has opportunities

to invest in the reconstruction of Iraq, accord-ing to Indonesian Ambassador to Iraq Safzen Noerdin.

“Following the US invasion, Iraq`s infra-structure has been totally damaged, so there are big opportunities [to invest] in various fields,” said Safzen, who is also a retired Lieutenant General, during a presentation on Indonesia-Iraq investment opportunities here on Tuesday.

“Iraq is familiar with the good quality prod-ucts exported by Indonesia, and the Iraqi people currently need tires, soaps, spices, and other daily-use products,” he added.

A number of Iraqi officials recently said Baghdad would give priority to Muslim-majority nations for cooperation in investment and trade.

“Indonesia could invest in the oil and gas sector and also in the development of schools, hospitals, bridges, roads, sports stadiums and markets,” Safzen noted.

“They also want to develop concrete plants, tire plants, pharmaceutical companies, elec-tronics companies and palm oil plantations,” he said.

“Having sufficient experience in the agri-

culture and fisheries sectors, Indonesia could even help in the development of these sectors in Iraq, because the Iraqi government has allocated special funds for that purpose,” the ambassador explained.

Safzen said the security condition in Iraq was improving and the Indonesian embassy in Iraq would also help ensure the safety and security of Indonesian businessmen.

Indonesia`s bilateral trade value with Iraq increased to US$154 million in 2011, from US$52 million in 2010.

Iraq produces 3 million barrels of oil per day and plans to increase the productivity to 10 million barrels per day by 2017.

Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Hussain Ibra-him Saleh Al-Shahristani, who visited Jakarta recently, said Iraq wanted to supply oil to devel-oping countries, including Indonesia.

“I am convinced that Iraq could become a safety valve to prevent volatility in the price of oil and meet the increasing demand of crude oil from developing countries, including In-donesia,” he said during a lecture on “Iraq`s Contribution to the World Facing the Global Challenges and Crisis’ at Pertamina Building.

Al-Shahristani also invited Indonesian oil company Pertamina to participate in the man-agement of the huge oil fields in Iraq.

JAKARTA - The Indonesian subsidiary of US mining giant Freeport-McMoRan is considering launching an initial public offering (IPO), its head said in comments published Wednesday.

“We are considering several options, including an IPO,” Freeport Indonesia president Rozik Soetjipto was quoted as telling the Jakarta Globe newspaper.

“The IPO would be good for Freeport Indonesia,” he said, adding that it would make the company “more accountable and transparent.” He did not specify details such as the timeframe or size of the sale.

US-based Freeport-McMoran Copper & Gold, which owns a 90.64 percent stake in the Indonesian subsidiary, would still have the final say on the matter, he added.

Soetjipto said Freeport, whose huge Grasberg mine in restive Papua province was hit by a violent strike last year, was focused on renegotiating its contracts ending in 2021 with the government, the report said.

Freeport Indonesia was not immedi-ately available for comment about the report.

Indonesia in March announced a new law limiting foreign ownership in the mining sector from 80 percent to less than 50 percent, in a bid to protect abundant natural resources and keep a larger por-tion of revenues.

The regulation, which applies to new contracts only, obliges foreigners to di-vest at least 51 percent of their shares to Indonesians over a 10-year period.

It is not clear how the law may affect Freeport’s Indonesian operation.

Indonesia, Southeast Asia’s largest economy, has some of the world’s biggest untapped mineral reserves, including tin, nickel, copper and gold.

Foreign direct investment in Indonesia hit a record $20 billion last year, with $3.6 billion attributed to the mining sector.

Freeport says it is the single biggest taxpayer to the Indonesian government.

Grasberg, the world’s biggest gold and second-biggest copper mine, is Freeport Indonesia’s only mine, employing more than 20,000 people.

A three-month strike over wages and work conditions last year turned violent, with at least eight people killed in am-bush attacks and clashes with police. The strike ended in December.

Power outages from Friday’s storm altered planned celebrations in a host of ways and left powerless residents grumbling that America’s birthday would hardly be a party. Cookouts were cancelled or moved to homes with power. Vacation plans were al-tered. Some residents without power said they weren’t in a holiday mood. And even some whose power had been restored said they had run out of steam to celebrate in the way they had planned.

Friday’s storm arrived with little warning and knocked out power to 3 million homes and businesses in states from West Virginia to Ohio and Illinois. Officials blamed 24 deaths on the storm and its aftermath, and power companies in some places estimated it could be the weekend before everyone’s power is restored. As of late Tuesday, more than 1 mil-lion homes and businesses remained without power.

As a result, power repairs were taking priority over parties in many parts. At least four planned fireworks displays were cancelled in Maryland because of the outages, with officials saying they couldn’t spare police and fire resources for the festivities.

In Rockville, Md., officials called

off their celebration because trees and wires were blocking two of the three entrances to the college campus where fireworks were planned. In Gaithers-burg, Md., Acting City Manager Tony Tomasello said his city, about 30 min-utes north of Washington, cancelled its display because a power company is using its planned celebration location, a fairgrounds, as a staging area for re-pairs. Hundreds of bucket trucks park there when crews finish their 16-hour shifts, and transformers, gravel and poles are being stored there too.

“Everyone’s disappointed. We’re disappointed,” Tomasello said of cancelling the celebration, adding that it would be rescheduled.

In West Virginia, meanwhile, officials urged people to resist the temptation to set off fireworks at home because the risk of fire is too high. Many brown, crunchy lawns were already potential fuel, but the trees and limbs that fell during the storm have added even more tinder.

Some people affected by the storm were too tired or frustrated to think about fireworks, parties or planned holiday travel. Dennis Andrews, 62, of Ellicott City, Md., had planned to go to Myrtle Beach, S.C. But after spending 14 hours cutting trees that

fell on his property, Andrews, who runs a construction equipment rental company, said he was ready to relax by the pool instead.

Other parties were toned down, cancelled or moved. LaJuan Bar-nett, 44, who runs a daycare in Waldorf, Md., planned a more modest celebration with hot dogs and hamburgers after throwing out at least $350 in spoiled food and spending another $200 on grocer-ies Tuesday.

“We’re on a budget,” said Barnett, who got her power back on Monday night, after nearly 72 hours.

Power outages and spoiled food also changed the plans of Sharvey Smith, 39, of Baltimore. Smith had begun preparing for an Independence Day party before the storm hit, buying chicken and spare ribs and planning a small gathering on her back porch. But that food spoiled when her power went out, so her party is off.

She planned to spend Wednes-day’s holiday at her parents’ house 10 minutes away, which has electricity, and where she and her family have been staying. But her patience is wearing thin.

So far, the estimated time it will be back on is no earlier than Thursday.

A car bombing at a market in central Iraq killed eight people on Wednesday and three others were murdered in Baghdad, the latest in a spike in nationwide unrest ahead of Shiite rituals.

The violence came a day after a series of attacks across Iraq killed 38 amid preparations for ceremonies on Friday to commemorate the birth of a key figure in Shiite Islam.

In Wednesday’s deadliest attack, a car bombing in the town of Zubaidiyah at 9:15 am (0615 GMT) killed eight people and wounded 37 others, a security official and a medic at a hospital in nearby Aziziyah said on condition of anonymity.

The medical official said a child was among the dead, and women and children were among the wounded.

About a dozen shops were badly damaged by the bombing, an AFP correspondent at the scene said, adding that security officials imposed a vehicle curfew on the town in the aftermath of the attack.

“It was a huge explosion this morning,” said Hussein al-Zubaidi, who owns a grocery store in the market where the bombing took place.

“It was strange for us -- it is the first time this has happened in our town. We have only one ambulance, so people worked together to evacuate the victims.”

In Baghdad, a series of assassinations by gunmen using silenced pistols left three people dead -- two police officers and a parliament official.

In one shooting, policewoman Ibtisam Ibrahim was killed by gun-shots to the head in the east of the capital, an interior ministry official and a medic at Al-Kindi hospital said.

In west Baghdad, off-duty police first lieutenant Ahmed Swadi, who was wearing civilian clothes, was killed, the interior ministry official and a doctor at Yarmuk hospital said.

And an employee working at Iraq’s parliament, Farhan Kadhim Mussa, was gunned down in the north of the capital, the interior ministry official and a medic at Medical City hospital said.

With extensification efforts, the production could still be improved to 8 tons per hectare. This effort could be realized by allocating budget funds for the development of the larger agricultural sector than the exist-ing one today.

Suparta also admitted if the agricultural sector became less favored profession among the younger generation. They preferred to take office job and industrial activities, whereas the agriculture and farming remained to become one of the leading activities in life. On that account, the government should be able to bridge the marketing of agricultural products by looking for marketplace to promote the agricultural sector. Therefore, the agricul-tural products would be guaranteed and obtained a reasonable price.

“The agricultural sector with slow enough progress does not give a hope to people who want to pursue this field, let alone with the budget for the agriculture in Bali still considered very small. By all means, it will become a consideration for young people to take higher education related to the agricultural sector,” he said.

Bali Central Statistics Agency (BPS) noted that in the period of 1999 the area of farmland in Bali reached 86,071 hectares. This figure had declined up to 4,140 hectares or left 81,931 hectares in the period of 2009. The farmland area was still dominated by Tabanan (22,465 ha), Gianyar (14,743 ha), and Buleleng with the condition of dry hills and forests had the largest non-irrigated land area spreading across 70,516 hectares. The 30-year-old American, who still looks unstoppable when in full flow on the lawns, wheeled out the heavy artillery to crack down 13 aces in a 6-3 7-5 victory that sig-nificantly raised the bar in a disap-pointing women’s tournament. The men’s tournament got back on track as the five fourth round matches were completed 24 hours later than scheduled despite the best efforts of the non-existent British summer.

For a change it was all rather tame for home favourite Andy Murray who dispensed with the theatrics to ease past Marin Cilic 7-5 6-2 6-3 to reach the last eight for a fifth straight year. Williams was ruthless against fourth seed Kvitova, who boasted some lethal weaponry of her own.

Czech Kvitova fought fire with fire to stay in touch with the Ameri-can powerhouse but was eventually de-throned in a high-quality clash which marked Williams’ first taste of life under the Centre Court

roof. “You can’t play a defending Wimbledon champion or grand slam champion and not elevate your game,” Williams told reporters.

“I had to weed out the riff raff and just get serious.” Williams will face another one in the semis after Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka beat Austria’s Tamira Paszek. Poland’s Agnieszka Radwanska reached her first grand slam semi-final after surviving several rain delays and a mid-match court switch to beat Russia’s Maria Kirilenko 7-5 4-6 7-5.

“Today for me was like 40 hours,” said third seed Radwan-ska after sealing victory under cover on Centre Court, echoing the thoughts of many of those involved in the championships, having been switched from Court One at 4-4 in the third set after yet more rain in London.

Radwanska, who along with Aza-renka can replace Maria Sharapova as world No.1 by the end of the

week, will tackle eighth seed An-gelique Kerber for a place in the final after she won an all-German clash against Sabine Lisicki 6-3 6-7 7-5 despite squandering two match points in the second set.

On the day the women’s last eight normally take centre stage, Murray returned at midday to fin-ish off Croatian Cilic to fuel hopes of a first home men’s winner at the championships since Fred Perry in 1936. The fourth seed was again held up by rain for a while but took advantage of a bright slot in the murky skies to dispatch Cilic with a minimum of fuss.

Murray will face Spain’s David Ferrer in the quarter-finals in a re-peat of their Roland Garros clash after the seventh seed thrashed Argentina’s Juan Martin del Potro 6-3 6-2 6-3. “To me he’s not a clay-court specialist,” Murray, outplayed by Ferrer on the French Open dirt, told reporters when asked whether the odds were in his favour.

JOHANNESBURG — Double ampu-tee Oscar Pistorius is going to the London Olympics after being selected for South Africa’s 4x400 relay team. Pistorius is set to become the first amputee track athlete ever to compete at the Olympics. South Africa’s Olympic committee picked him Wednesday.

The selection eased Pistorius’ disap-

pointment at his failure to qualify in the individual 400 meters. The 25-year-old South African, who runs on carbon fiber prosthetics, missed out by less than a quar-ter of a second in his final qualifying race at the African championships last week.

Pistorius made history last year by qualifying for the world championships and winning silver in the 4x400. Pistorius won several medals at the Beijing and Athens Paralympics.

NEW YORK — Deron Williams is moving to Brooklyn with the Nets, instead of back home to Dallas. The All-Star point guard said on his Twitter page Tuesday night that he “made a very tough decision today” and posted a picture of the Nets’ new team logo that accompanies their move from New Jersey to Brooklyn.

A person with knowledge of the decision said Williams told the team he was accepting their five-year contract worth $98 million. The person confirmed the agreement on condition of anonymity because contracts can’t be signed until July 11. Williams, the top free agent available, chose to stay with the Nets over signing with the Mavericks, who hoped they could convince him to come back to the area where he grew up.

It’s a huge triumph for the Nets as they prepare to move into the new Barclays Center to start the 2012-13 season. They gave up an enormous package to get Williams in a surprising February 2011 trade, sending promising forward Derrick Favors, point guard Devin Harris, two first-round draft picks and cash to the Utah Jazz.

But it was worth it for the Nets, who needed a franchise player with them to build buzz for their move to New York. Williams wanted to make a quick decision before he reports to training camp in Las Vegas with the U.S. men’s basketball team on Thursday. He met with both teams Monday,

the day after free agency opened, and made his Twitter posting at about 7 p.m. ET.

Williams’ decision comes a day after the Nets agreed to a deal with Atlanta for All-Star guard Joe Johnson, and amid reports they are still hoping to make a deal with Orlando for Dwight Howard. Brooklyn also has a deal in place to re-sign ver-satile free agent forward Gerald Wallace.

Just two years after a 70-loss season, the Nets will have one of the NBA’s best backcourts and are poised to make a quick move up the Eastern Conference standings.

Dirk Nowitzki and the Mavericks had spoken openly about their desire to bring Williams back to North Texas, where he starred at The Colony High School. Mark Cuban’s team never made much attempt to defend its 2011 NBA title, letting key players such as Tyson Chandler and J.J. Barea leave through free agency so the Mavs could save money for this summer.

But Dallas could only offer Williams a four-year deal worth about $75 million under the terms of the new collective bargaining agreement. And with the Nets’ flurry of moves, may not even be able to offer a better team anymore.

Williams averaged 21 points and 8.7 assists last season and had a 57-point game. One of the league’s top point guards since entering the NBA as the No. 3 pick of the Jazz in 2005, he was ahead of his competitors when last season started after playing in Turkey during the lockout.

MADRID - Euro 2012 winners Juan Mata, Jordi Alba and Javi Martinez were in-cluded in Spain’s preliminary soccer squad on Tuesday for the London Olympics later this month. Chelsea midfielder Mata and full back Alba, who is set to leave Valencia for Barcelona this week, scored in Sunday’s 4-0 final victory over Italy in Kiev.

The world champions became the first side to retain the European title, stringing together three major tournament triumphs in a row. Luis Milla’s 22-man Olympic squad was named the day after Mata, Alba and Athletic Bilbao midfielder Martinez were involved in a huge homecoming cel-ebration as the team paraded the trophy through the streets of Madrid.

“I believe it would be unfair to demand that this team be at the same level as the full national team,” Milla told a news

conference. “This team has character and a similar playing philosophy but it is a dif-ferent team under different pressures.” The Olympic team will join up on Friday and will face Senegal and Mexico in friendlies before heading to London.

The squad, which will be trimmed down to 18, also includes Manchester United goal-keeper David De Gea, Chelsea midfielder Oriol Romeu and Barcelona trio Martin Montoya, Thiago Alcantara and Cristian Tello.

“Tottenham Hotspur are a great club with a strong tradition and fantastic support, both at home and throughout the world. I feel privileged to become coach,” the 34-year-old told the Spurs website (www.tottenhamhotspur.com). “This is one of the most exciting coaching positions in the Premier League. I have had several discus-sions with the chairman (Daniel Levy) and the board and I share their vision for the future progress of the club.

BERNE - Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala, who have splurged millions on the likes of Cameroon striker Samuel Eto’o and Dutch coach Guus Hiddink, said they have been banned from playing at home in Europe this season. The club has written an open letter to UEFA president Michel Platini saying it was “deeply sorry and surprised” to hear that it would not be able to stage Europa League matches at its base in the violence-plagued Dagestan region.

UEFA, which according to Anzhi’s letter made the decision for security reasons, was not im-

mediately available for comment. “Anzhi has been hosting its home matches in the Russian champion-ship in Makhachkala for more than 20 years. During this time, no inci-dent of any gravity has happened in our stadium,” said the letter written by general director Aivaz Kaziakhmedov.

“The stars of the European and world football, Roberto Carlos, Samuel Etoo, Yuri Zhirkov, and others enjoy playing for Anzhi in Makhachkala under the leadership of Guus Hiddink. “Millions of our fans were waiting for a European match in Makhachkala as a real festival.

“The owner of the Anzhi club has invested millions to finance

the reconstruction of the stadium, building of a new ultra-modern football arena in the city, youth football academy and the construc-tion of seven football centres.” “After such a decision made by UEFA, what shall we do with all these projects?

“There is just one question left - maybe we’d better stop this initia-tive, maybe all this is useless for the football development and the forma-tion of healthy life-style, solution of the citizens’ social problems.”

Anzhi will enter the tournament in the second qualifying round and will meet the winners of the tie between Flamutari of Albania and Hungarians Honved.

LONDON - Andre Villas-Boas was given a chance to make amends for his first failed effort in English football management after being named coach of Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday. The job represents a golden opportunity for Villas-Boas. A year ago he took over at London rivals Chelsea on a three-year deal but he struggled at Stamford Bridge and left under a cloud nine months later amid media reports of dressing-room unrest.

would love to work with and together I believe we can bring success in the seasons ahead,” the Portuguese added after re-placing Harry Redknapp who was sacked last month after four years at the helm. Hopes were initially high for Villas-Boas at Stamford Bridge after he guided Porto to Europa League glory and a Portuguese domestic double the previous season.

However, he was sacked in March after the 2009-10 Premier League champions suffered a

string of poor results. His num-ber two Roberto Di Matteo took over in a caretaker capacity and sparked a remarkable turnaround in fortunes that led to Chelsea winning the Champions League and FA Cup.

Tottenham removed the popular Redknapp after finishing fourth in the league but failing to qualify for Europe’s top competition thanks to Chelsea’s victory over Bayern Munich in the Champions League final. It was a frustrating season for Spurs who, at the halfway

stage in the league, had mounted a credible title challenge.

OUTSTANDING REPUTATION

Redknapp’s dismissal has cleared the way for Villas-Boas to return to the spotlight and while his appointment will be met with scepticism elsewhere in London, his past triumphs cannot be overlooked. “He has an outstanding reputation for his technical knowledge of the game and for creating well-organised teams capable of playing football in an attractive and attacking style,” said Levy.

“Andre shares our long-term ambitions and ethos of develop-ing players and nurturing young talent.” Redknapp was an old-school man-manager type and Levy now seems to want to create

an image of Spurs as a modern, high-flying, big-spending football club. “We are constantly looking to move the club forward,” he said on Tuesday.

“It is important we now look to develop potential within the squads at all levels while strengthening the first team in the sum-mer in key positions with players who will become part of the future success of the club.”

BERNE - Brazil slumped to 11th in the FIFA rankings on Wednesday, their lowest ever position, while tiny Tahiti surged 41 places after their astonishing win at the Oceania Nations Cup.

Performances at Euro 2012 had an impact on places, with winners Spain staying top, semi-finalists Germany moving up a spot to sec-ond and runners-up Italy jumped from 12th to sixth.

Moving in the opposite direction, Netherlands slumped from fourth to eighth after their first-round exit at Euro 2012. Brazil dropped out of

the top 10 for the first time since the rankings began in 1993 following defeats to Mexico and Argentina in friendlies in the last month. Under the complex system used to calcu-late the rankings,2014 World Cup hosts Brazil have also suffered by having notplayed any competitive internationals since last year’s Copa America when they went out in the quarter-finals.

Uruguay remained the highest-ranked South American side at third followed by Argentina in seventh. Africa’s highest team are Ivory Coast in 16th.

Tahiti’s shock win at the Oceania Nations Cup lifted them 41 places

According to Agus, every country and its military worldwide should cooperate in the fight against terrorism and transna-tional crimes.

RI sees investment opportunities in Iraq

(kmb27)

DENPASAR - The number of foreign visitors to Bali rose 5.57 percent on-year to 220,700 in May 2012, the Central Statistic Agency (BPS) of Bali said.

The growing number of tourists contributed to an in-crease in the occupancy rates of hotels in Bali.

Head of Gianyar Tourism Agency, AA Bagus Ari Brah-manta, when confirmed stated

this renovation has got its planner consultant which will fix the roof of the wantilan (open meeting place) stage that has been dam-aged also its ground part. The project starts from 1st June 2012 with budget IDR 223,524,000. This repair was not just based on locals complained but also the Gi-anyar government’s commitment to revitalise this artwork of I Gusti Nyoman Lempad that is known by the locals. The stage repair will be done step by step which then will then be used for locals’ activities such as spiritual events, yoga and more. It is admitted that Gianyar has not much places for art performances so this will be functioned again. (kmb16)

ReutersBERLIN - Four people, probably

including a gunman, were killed dur-ing a hostage taking incident at a house in southern Germany on Wednesday, a police spokesman said.

Earlier, police said the gunman had taken up to four people hostage

following an attempted eviction of an apartment in the southern town of Karlsruhe.

“Special forces broke into the apartment after smelling smoke and found four dead bodies. Probably one of them is the gunman,” the spokesman told Reuters.

“It will comprise the element of police, prosecutor, government, health agency, cus-toms and other relevant agencies,” she said.

JAKARTA - An Indonesian court on Wednesday threw out an anti-drug group’s legal challenge against a presidential de-cision to slash the jail term of Australian drug trafficker Schapelle Corby.

The state administrative court in Jakarta rejected the challenge from the National Movement Against Narcotics (GRANAT) against the Indonesian president’s five-year reduction of Corby’s 20-year jail term.

“The state administrative court has no right to proceed with the legal challenge by GRANAT. Clemency is a presidential prerogative protected by the Indone-sian constitution,” Judge Yodi Martono Wahyunadi said.

The court last month examined docu-ments submitted by the group arguing that President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s act of clemency in May was unjustified and drug traffickers posed a “dangerous threat” to the younger generation.

The group’s lawyer Henry Yosodinin-grat said they would appeal the decision. “Indonesia is in grief today following the court’s decision.

Bali Central Statistics Agency (BPS) noted the remaining plant area at the end of December 2011 reached 39,022 hectares or smaller than the remaining plant area in 2010 reaching 47.394 hectares. This indicated the decline in the remaining paddy plant area of 8,372 hectares in the end of 2011 which led

in Bali, was assessed by Chairman of the Indonesia Farmers Association (HKTI) of Bali, Prof. Dr. Nyoman Suparta, as a result of government that did not optimally boost the agricultural production amidst the ubiq-

uitous conversion of farmland function to a number of other sectors. Actually, optimizing the agricultural production in Bali was still very possible.

“It can be performed either in rice agri-cultural sector and fruit commodities that are also produced by Bali over the years. At the same time, this should become a critical measure carried out by the provincial govern-ment of Bali,” he said.

He said the rice production in Bali so far had reached an average of 6 tons per hectare, much higher than other regions.
