The agency initially said ships were leaving the search area along with the planes, but later announced the ships would stay and try to continue the search. “Bad weather expected for next 24 hours,” it tweeted. Malaysia had said late Wednesday that images taken in recent days by a French satellite showed “122 potential ob- jects” adrift in the vast area, but nothing has been recovered yet that would confirm the plane’s fate. The Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 is presumed to have crashed on March 8 in the Indian Ocean with 239 people aboard after mysteriously diverting from its Kuala Lumpur- Beijing path and apparently flying for hours in the opposite direction. Malaysia believes the plane was deliberately re-directed by someone on board, but nothing else is known. AMSA had said earlier the new satellite images were in an area authorities have pinpointed as a potential crash zone some 2,500 kilometres (1,550 miles) southwest of Perth. Six military planes from Australia, China, Japan and the United States had been set to fly sorties throughout Thursday, along with five civil aircraft, scouring two areas covering a cumulative 78,000 square kilometres. Five ships from Australia and China also were set to re- sume searching the zone. The search was also suspended Tuesday due to bad weather, causing mounting concern as the clock ticks on the signal emitted by the plane’s “black box” of flight data. The data is considered vital to unravelling the flight’s mystery but the signal, aimed at guiding searchers to the device on the seabed where it hopefully can be recovered, will expire in under two weeks. The drama is playing out in a wild expanse of ocean de- scribed by Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott as “about as close to nowhere as it’s possible to be”, and known for gale-force winds and towering waves. The new satellite images provided by European aerospace giant Airbus depicted some objects as long as 23 metres (75 feet), Malaysian Transport Minister Hishammuddin Hussein said. Seeking closure, anguished families of those aboard are desperately awaiting hard evidence, which the aviation in- dustry hopes can also provide clues to what caused one of aviation’s greatest mysteries. US law firm Ribbeck Law Chartered International fired the first salvo Wednesday in an expected barrage of lawsuits on behalf of grieving families. The firm is targeting Malaysia Airlines and Boeing. “We are going to be filing the lawsuits for millions of dol- lars per each passenger based on prior cases that we have done involving crashes like this one,” the firm’s head of aviation litigation, Monica Kelly, told reporters in Kuala Lumpur. ‘Appalling’ handling MH370 relatives have endured more than a fortnight of agonising uncertainty. There’s more of pretty much everything in this sequel. That means it sacrifices some of the purity of the first movie, which had its share of weaponry but was rendered excit-ing and distinctive primarily by its virtuoso assaults of lethal fists and feet on flesh.

Visceral in the extreme, the bravura martial arts mayhem still takes pride of place, choreographed again by lead actor Iko Uwais and Yayan Ruhian, who also appears, though as a different character from last time. But Evans expands the hardware beyond the usual guns and knives, giving some of his assassins their own special tools.

Uwais returns as police officer Rama, but his bad-seed brother, Andi (Donny Alamsyah), isn’t so lucky. He gets iced in the opening minutes in a sugarcane field by Bejo (Alex Abbad), a half-Arab gangster looking to grow his territory. Bejo tells Andi that ambition and limitation don’t mix well in the underworld. That unfortu-

LOS ANGELES — Leaving behind the original’s grungy Jakarta tenement setting for the luxurious hangouts of Indonesia’s organized crime overlords, “The Raid 2” pumps up its production values several notches. Even so, it’s easy to imagine that one of the biggest items on the budget might be the orthopedics bill, since this orgy of broken bones and vicious badassery makes its cult predecessor look like a peevish bitch-slap. Lining up bloody showdowns like the dizzying acts of a hyper-violent ballet, Gareth Evans’ sequel invites accusations of, ahem, overkill. But the fanboys will eat it up.

nate combination applies to more than one criminal upstart here, Bejo included.

Demonstrating that the cops are almost as ruthless as the crooks, Rama is forced to go undercover in an anti-corruption task force, with the understanding that the safety of his wife and child depend on it. He’s cornered into doing prison time to get close to Ucok (Arifin Putra), the cocky son of old-school crime boss Bangun (Tio Pakusodewo), whose syndicate co-exists peacefully with that of his Japanese coun-terpart, Goto (Kenichi Endo).

In a great kickoff to the fight ac-tion, Rama gets Ucok’s attention by single-handedly dispatching the welcome committee with little more than a steel bathroom door. While the cop initially refuses overtures to join the mob scion’s gang, he steps in when Ucok’s life is threatened. The gritty squalor of the prison is the chief visual link with the grubby aesthetic of the first movie. It’s

also the setting for a massive smackdown when all hell breaks loose in the muddy courtyard after a downpour. Rama shows his resourcefulness by making creative use of a broom handle, earning Ucok’s respect and loyalty.

NEW YORK — Like any world unto itself, Hollywood has its own lexicon. But Gwyneth Paltrow’s use of the term “conscious uncoupling” to describe her breakup with Chris Martin this week had even Hollywood veterans scratching their heads and reaching — metaphorically at least — for a dictionary. Of course, there was snark, too. And, on the other hand, some real appreciation for the message and the way it was delivered — in a joint post from the actress and her rock-star husband on Paltrow’s lifestyle website, goop. (Which — surprise! — crashed from the traffic.)

But before we get to that, let’s start with the basics: What the heck does “conscious uncoupling” mean? “I’ve never heard it, but it sounds like a phrase used by marriage therapists in Malibu,” quipped Janice Min, editor of The Hollywood Reporter.

Pretty close, actually. The term was coined by a Los Angeles therapist and author, Katherine Woodward Thomas, who has created a five-step “Conscious Uncoupling” online process — to “release the trauma of a breakup, reclaim your power and reinvent your life.” Speaking by telephone Wednesday from Costa Rica, where she traveled to write her second book — called, not surprisingly, “Conscious Uncoupling” — Thomas explained that her goal was “to create a map for a couple to consciously complete a relationship — to have an honorable ending.”

Thomas said that the assumption that people will have only one lifetime partner — and that anything else is a failure

EvEry Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

This newest Aston Hotel, the 26th in Indonesia, was officially opened by Indonesia’s Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, Mrs. Mari Elka Pangestu and Bangka Belitung’s Governor, Mr. Rustam Effendi, has been conceptualized to support Belitung’s development, providing previously unavailable international standard accommodations and conference facilities for the island’s growing commerce and tourism.

The hotel features 202 guest rooms and suites, several of which enjoy breathtaking views of the nearby ocean. The hotel swimming pool also soaks up this beachfront vista, as do the handful of food and beverage outlets including a restau-rant, coffee shop and a bar & lounge complete with karaoke facilities. Being just 20 minutes from the airport and 5 minutes to the city centre, government offices and banking district, busi-ness travelers are well catered for together with 4 hotel meeting rooms and a grand ballroom capable of accommodating up to 600 persons. Down-time can be enjoyed in the hotel’s fitness center and spa.

Belitung, a former tin mining center, is re-nowned for many things, namely its beautiful beaches, unique landscapes, pure white sandy bays dotted with dramatic granite boulders and the crystal clear sea water that surrounds it, served as the location for the famous Indonesian movie, Laskar Pelangi.

The main tourist spots on Belitung are found on the pristine beaches and offshore islets. The main beaches are Tanjung Tinggi Beach and Tanjung Kelayang Beach, both of which boast blue clear water, powdery sands and the signature rocky landscape. As for the islands/islets, Batu Berlayar Island (meaning Sailing Rock) is full of stunning granite structures while Lengkuas Island is the home of a 129 year-old lighthouse and a great place for snorkeling. Pasir Island is made of sand and is submerged during high tide, as is Bird Islet (Pulau Burong) which can be accessed from Tanjung Binga beach at low tide.

“Since we soft opened last December, the Aston Belitung Hotel already achieved an aver-age room occupancy of 70% making it by far the

Bali PostDENPASAR - To ensure the

availability of subsidized fuel ahead of the celebration of Nyepi in the Caka New Year 1936, Pertamina anticipates by increasing the stock up to 10 percent of the normal consumption. The increase of stock was instructed to all petrol stations starting from seven days before Nyepi.

“Normal consumption of Pre-mium fuel in Bali is around 2,700 KL per day and diesel fuel is approximately 900 KL per day. Ahead of the Nyepi, we anticipate the increase in fuel at about 10 percent for each prod-uct,” said Assistant Manager of External Relations of Pertamina

Marketing Operation for Region V, Heppy Wulansari, when asked for her confirmation on Tuesday (Mar 25).

He said the anticipation was meant to ensure in order the distri-bution of fuel and LPG remained secure in Bali. Peak of the increase in fuel consumption typically oc-curred on two to one day prior to the Nyepi feast day.

“For the 3-kg LPG, Pertamina also anticipates the increase in consumption by increasing the stock up to 3 percent of the normal consumption or 440 metric tons per day of the normal consumption at 430 metric tons per day,” she explained.

Although in previous years

there was no increase in the 3-kg LPG consumption during the celebration of Nyepi, Happy said that her party remained to anticipate with the increase in the buffer stock in the agencies up to 3 percent. Meanwhile, to ensure the distribution of fuel and LPG could run smoothly in the field, her party also formed a Task Force to monitor the availability of stock in the terminal of fuel and LPG as well as distribution to stock in the distribution agencies.

As had been known, up to Febru-ary, the consumption of Premium fuel in Bali was recorded to reach 136,457 kiloliters, diesel fuel at 36,984 kiloliters and 3-kg LPG at 21,900 metric tons. The greatest

subsidized fuel consumption in Bali was dominated by Denpasar city and Badung County, while for the largest consumption of the 3-kg LPG occurred in Denpasar and Buleleng. Pertamina predicted to save up to 1,600 liters of premium and diesel fuel.

Pertamina prepared Premium fuel in the two terminals reaching 40,400 kiloliters, diesel fuel (5,800 liters) and Pertamax fuel (400 kiloliters).

Marketing Branch Manager of Pertamina for Bali-NTB area, Iwan Yudha Wibawa, said that his party ensured to maintain the fuel supply in Bali, either at fuel terminal at Manggis (Karangasem) or fuel ter-minal at Pesanggaran (Denpasar).

The stock of fuel in Bali was in a secure condition before and after the Nyepi. Public demand one day before and one day after the Nyepi would be normal and there would be no surges that caused a long line. Certainly, the petrol station was ensured to get no difficulty in getting fuel.

“To welcome the upcoming Nyepi, the capacity of Premium fuel in the two fuel terminals reached 40,400 kiloliters, diesel fuel at 5,800 kiloliters and Perta-max at 400 kiloliters. Reserve of stocks has a resilience average of 9 days in the future. Based on that number, it can be ascertained that Premium stock in Bali is in secure condition,” he said. (kmb27)

There were some psychologi-cal problems surrounding Nyepi celebration. Supports did not come from those who did not involve in these priorities. Fortunately, it came at last after the positive appreciation spread, having its approach added or changed so global priorities got in it which is marked by (and hopefully will actually happen) by having all television station will not broadcasting minimal for Bali area for the whole day of Nyepi that falls on Monday, 31 March, 2014.

These global priorities are part of the ongoing aspects as I wrote in December 2007 that introduc-ing and socializing the meaning of Nyepi with new approaches will let others acknowledge the use of having it in preserving the environment. Nyepi was introduced to the nation and international not for Bali’s tourism priorities but for wider importance, global itself, for ongoing development. Nyepi from global perspective can still be assessed such as environmental pollution.

In this context, the Head of Indonesia Delegation for Climate

Change Summit Conference year 2007 in Nusa Dua, Emil Salim, revealed that Nyepi has a great contribution in decreasing CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) emission not only in Bali and not only for a day and night but its positive affect spreads and for that it is understand-able if other conference attendees were amazed with the film about Nyepi in Bali. They were amazed remembering this conference was about the reflection of the world’s complaint against global warming as the earth’s surface temperature kept going up with carbon dioxide and other gasses or green house gasses kept covering earth, keep-ing heat.

This approach should be devel-oped and has a wider appreciation regarding brata penyepian which is not only in order to appreciate cer-tain religion and for Bali’s tourism, but it’s for everyone, a universal pri-ority and for the future. Bali is rich with universal characteristic spirits, so to introduce Nyepi doesn’t need a religious approach such as spirit in agriculture or subak (irrigation) system, tumpek kandang ceremony

for environment preservation which is part of traditional spirit which amazed others as it has universal meaning. Other than that would be Nyepi itself, kawitan (ances-tors), banjar, desa pakraman (tra-ditional villages), sekaa (groups) and more.

Those spirits are not only devel-op and unite to make the dreamed Bali, Bali Dwipajaya, but also to actualize in finding balance and in developing the diversity in the island. For example Bali traditional spirit teach us to build a building not just for owner’s need but also for the environment. Yet its height parameter is not “not allowed to be higher than a coconut tree” but it’s “not more than 15 meters”.

These spirits couldn’t be applied if the are facing globalization which is now surrounding the world. Agri-culture sector with its subak system seems no longer seen its role when the international world hit by food crisis. On the other hand, the affect of higher commodity agriculture price in international market is not affected the local farmers. Also when soya beans price and others

Nyepi, Pertamina adds 10 percent of subsidized fuel stock

Nyepi, part of global environment prioritiesIBP

People commonly knows about the meaning and values behind brata penyepian (Nyepi fasting) as a part of Hindu’s teaching and one Balinese unique tradition. In its develop-ment there is suggestion to make that tradition as part of tourism attraction. Now, people want it as the method to be applied and seen as something important in the global envi-ronment.

are being played by overseas traders, the local entrepreneurs couldn’t fight back. This shows that all this time we haven’t fully actualize these spirits that is devel-oping beneath the people and so the bal-ance point in diversity hasn’t been found. Moreover those universal meaningful spirits starts to go away.

The analogue with Nyepi is the Tri Hita Karana (three human harmonic connec-tion with God, human and environment). Tri Hita Karana has universal values in

the concept and implementation of not separating races, generations and reli-gions. For that reason, in the process to approach and socialize it to national and international, Tri Hita Karana not only should be a philosophy that comes from certain religion but also to be understood as a concept with universal values. “I think girls’ (clothing) was easier for me to wrap my head around,” said Kourtney Kar-dashian while promoting the ven-ture in New York Monday. She said she’s “obsessed with boys’ clothes” but found “it was easier to just start with girls.” She hopes to incorporate boys’ clothing into the line in the future.

“I would love to,” Kardashian, 34, said, adding that she started shopping for her son Mason, now 4, when she was pregnant with him. She also has a daughter, Penelope, who is almost 2.

While Penelope is too little to have a say in what she wears, Kardashian said she “picks her battles” when it comes to dress-ing her son, who likes to pick

out his own clothes and “surprise everyone and then come out and show us his outfit so it’s really cute.” But “if there’s a special occasion and I really want him to wear a suit on Christmas Eve for this or that, then he’s so far has been good about still wearing what I want.”

Kardashian would rather shop for her kids than herself. “It’s just so much more fun and there’s so much out there, but I’m really picky,” she said, adding that she loves to put outfits together for them.

Kardashian says she and her sisters, Kim and Khloe, each bring their own sense of style to the kids’ lines, with Khloe partial to leopard print, Kourtney loving

butterfly motifs and Kim a fan of neutral colors. Kardashian also gives a thumbs-up to the new Vogue magazine cover picturing Kim embraced by her husband-to-be, Kanye West.

Vogue editor Anna Wintour defended the cover in a letter to readers, saying she likes to “feature those who define the culture at any given moment, who stir things up, whose presence in the world shapes the way it looks and influences the way we see it.” Wintour called the cover “charming and touching.” Kourt-ney Kardashian said she was very happy for her sister. “When she told me I was just speechless and you know she looks beautiful,” she said.

Accompanied by his wife Tatty Bakrie, Bali’s Deputy Governor Ketut Sudikerta and a number of party executives, ARB held dialogs with vegetable traders.

“Good morning Madam. What are you selling, how much is it,” ARB said when greeting one of the traders.

ARB and his wife bought veg-etables, fruits, praying utensils and cakes which they later distributed to the locals who were coming to the market to shop.

Sudikerta who is also the Gol-kar Party’s chairman for Bali, also bought vegetables and other basic necessities.

ARB said that traditional mar-kets must be maintained, revital-ized and made them clean. “Tradi-tional markets should not abolished but must be renovated.

In recent years, traditional mar-kets have been under pressure by newer forms of retailing, such as supermarkets, chain stores and convenience stores.

But the government continues to focus its attention on improving the traditional markets’ facilities and sanitation, as well as vendor services.

AntaraDENPASAR - Bali is appointed to host the Inter-

national Biology Olympiad on July 6-13, 2014, stated an official from the Education and Cultural Ministry Achmad Jazidie on Wednesday.

Achmad explained that biology has become a sort of “leading” or clumps lead in science study.

“There are at least four participants from 65 coun-tries to attend the International Biology Olympiad, IBO,” Achmad pointed out.

Therefore, Achmad estimated that there will be 250 participants from about 65 countries around the world.

“We hope, we will be able to increase student mo-tivation all across Bali to boost the capability in the field of science especially biology, through this event,” Achmad remarked.

With more and more international events held in Bali, will further improve Bali’s image in the eyes of the world. Not only in terms of tourism and internation-al conferences, but also from the aspect of science.

Golkar chairman visits traditional marketAntara

TABANAN - Golkar Party General Chairman Aburizal Bakri (ARB) visited Dauh Pala traditional market in Tabanan, Bali, to have dialogs with local traders while shopping on Thursday morning.

Modernization of traditional markets is necessary because it is believed to boost the economy and strengthen the competitiveness of traders with those in modern markets.

Therefore, government min-istries are working to modernize traditional markets in a number of regions in 2014.

“One of our programs this year is to revitalize around 60 tradi-tional markets and to build 88 loca-tions for street vendors in a number of provinces,” Cooperatives and Small and Medium Enterprises Minister Sjarifuddin Hasan stated here some time in February.

He noted that the program was the follow-up of a similar project carried out in 2013, when 254 loca-tions for PKL were built and 472 traditional markets were managed by cooperatives.

“Modernization of traditional markets and good management of street vendors by cooperatives will help solve the problem of trading and providing double benefits to traders,” he explained.

Traditional markets have also become the target of political par-ties during the current campaign

period.The female legislative candidate

from Great Indonesia Movement (Gerindra) party in Bali, Ni Kadek Desy Dwi Jayanti, is determined to strive for traditional markets on the island of Gods.

“We will manage the traditional

markets to bring them on a par with modern ones in our effort to improve economic activities on this island resort of Bali,” Desy Dwi Jayanti stated here on Tuesday.

She noted that traditional mar-kets have played bigger roles in

economic sustainability because things there were not only similar in quality to those in the modern markets, but were cheaper.

A total of 12 political parties in the national level are launching campaign for the upcoming legis-lative elections on April 9, 2014.

Maduro has repeatedly accused the protesters of trying to stage a coup against his socialist govern-ment and drive him from power before his term ends in 2019. He also accuses the opposition of ignoring his mandate after pro-government candidates prevailed in mayoral elections in December. On Tuesday, Maduro dramatized the allegation of anti-government plotting by announcing that three air force generals had been arrested for planning a coup, allegedly after meeting with members of the op-position. He later promised to seek the harshest penalty possible.

Diego Moya-Ocampos, a Latin American analyst at research firm IHS, said the arrests were likely intended as a message to the troops about the power the administration has over military tribunals.

“I think the sign he wants to

send is, ‘Be careful with the kind of dialogue you open, because you could risk losing your career,’” Moya-Ocampos said from Lon-don. Details about the arrests re-mained scarce Wednesday, though Maduro singled out a prominent government critic who allegedly tried to meet the three: Rocio San Miguel, director of a group that monitors Venezuela’s military.

San Miguel told The Associ-ated Press she knew nothing about the allegations. She added that no coup against Maduro was remotely possible, given the president’s dramatic expansion of the military’s role running of the government.

Hours after Maduro spoke, the military issued an impassioned vow of loyalty to the president, in-sisting there were no cracks in its “monolithic” support and pledg-ing to continue “protecting our

people, guarding our homeland’s sovereignty and supporting the constitutionally elected president and commander in chief.”

Meanwhile, Congresswoman Maria Corina Machado, one of the most prominent opposition figures, returned to the country from Peru on Wednesday and led hundreds of protesters in a march through Caracas. The ruling party says it has stripped Machado of her seat and her immunity from prosecution after she denounced the government at a meeting of re-gional diplomats in Washington.

In February, as the protests started, the government accused hard- l ine oppos i t ion leader Leopoldo Lopez of inci t ing the violence, arrested him and gave him a hearing in a military jail, a step that Moya-Ocampos described as unprecedented in Venezuelan history.

NEW YORK — Facebook’s latest multibillion dollar acquisi-tion of virtual reality headset maker Oculus is prompting some people to wonder if CEO Mark Zuckerberg is already living in an alternate reality. Longtime technology analyst Roger Kay wonders whether Zuckerberg “is nuts” for agreeing to pay $2 billion for Oculus less than five weeks after inking a deal to buy WhatsApp for $19 billion.

Oculus, which got its start on the crowdfunding site Kickstarter, doesn’t have a consumer product on the market, just the promise of bulky virtual reality goggles that have generated huge buzz in the video gaming community.

Zuckerberg, for his part, sees long-term implications in the technology, for communication, entertainment and beyond. He was right about mobile, and he’s created the world’s biggest online social network. So, is he looney, or visionary?

“Mobile is the platform of today and now we’re starting to also get ready for the platforms of tomorrow. To me, by far the most exciting future platform is around vision or modifying what you see to create augmented and immersive experiences,” Zuckerberg said on a conference call Tuesday discussing the deal. “Today’s acquisition is a long-term bet on the future of computing. I believe Oculus can be one of the platforms of this future.”

Facebook’s investors seem to think Oculus’s promise is too far off. The Menlo Park, California-based social networking com-pany’s stock fell 7 percent on Wednesday to close at $60.38.

Beyond sticker shock, the WhatsApp and Oculus deals — along with the Facebook’s spurned offer to buy SnapChat for $3 bil-lion— have raised questions about Facebook’s ability to innovate on its own. Some of the company’s most high-profile products, such as the SnapChat-like Poke, the messaging service Facebook Messenger and Home, have flopped. The jury’s still out on Paper, a stand-alone app that lets users read news, Facebook feeds and more.

“Facebook I don’t think has the best innovation strategy,” says Gartner analyst Brian Blau. “So far it’s been ‘move fast and break things.’ Move fast is good, but break thinks, may not be.”

CARACAS, Venezuela — Venezuela’s military, congress and Supreme Court are rallying behind Presi-dent Nicolas Maduro and joining forces in an increasingly blunt response to the country’s opposition as protests continue. The Supreme Court on Tuesday sentenced the opposition mayor of a restive border city to a year in jail for failing to remove road barricades put up by anti-government activists. It sent another mayor to jail last week for the same reason.

Denpasar (Bali Post) –

A student was washed away while taking a bath in Tegal Wangi Beach, Nusa Dua on Wednesday. Arlin Pratama, a student from Makasar Tourism Institute was dragged by big waves and the body was found yesterday in the middle of the sea. The body was brought to Sanglah Hospital for further examination.

The Head of Kuta Precinct Gede Redastra said that the victim was swimming with his friend on the beach. Even tough the waves were big at that time but the victim swam all the way to the middle. “Actually, the locals in the area already warned them but they didn’t obey,” he added.

Not too long after, the victim suddenly disap-peared while the other two managed to swim to shore and asked for help. Many people were trying to help but they could find the victim. “The incident was reported to the police station,” Redastra said.

The search was done directly but due to the low light, it was stopped and continued on the next day. The body was found floating around 1 km from the beach. “The victim was found dead at that time,” Redastra explained.(kmb21)

“As of February 2014, the flow of currency to banks in Bali was in the position of net-inflow reaching IDR 516.75 billion. Although there has been an increased demand for cash, as a preparation, we have prepared a supply of money worth more than IDR 4 trillion,” said Ananda Pulungan in Denpasar, Tuesday (Mar 25).

He said the cashless payment system, clearing and RTGS had not shown a significant increase in activ-ity. During this period, the nominal amount of transaction through the BI National Clearing System (BI-SKN) was IDR 4.23 trillion. This figure had decreased by 6.96 percent compared to the previous month. “The decline was also seen in the nominal of the exiting and incoming RTGS in Bali where the nominal amount of RTGS is IDR 20.06 billion, a decrease of 5.41 percent compared to the previous month,” he said.

According to him, in order to sup-port the activities of payment system

ahead of legislative election and economic activity in broader sense, the BI provided reliable, secure and efficient payment system services both in cash (banking deposit and payment, small money changers, and mobile cash) as well as non-cash (clearing and RTGS).

“Facing the legislative election, Bank Indonesia urges the public to remain cautious in transacting by cash with careful attention to the character-istics of genuine rupiah,” he said.

As had been known, there would be about 5,000 candidates competing for local and national legislative election. He estimated that of the total candi-dates, only some 30 percent would fight seriously to scramble seats, while 70 percent only served as a comple-ment and requirements. On average, the expenditure of each legislative candidate would be worth IDR 200 million, so the total fund in circulation would be estimated to reach around IDR 10 trillion.

An economist from the Undiknas University, Prof. Gede Sri Darma, DBA, stated the funds reaching tens of trillions of the legislative candidates would boost the economy of Bali. The industry of clothing, groceries, billboards, advertising, transporta-tion, hotels and agriculture would move as the result of this legislative election. “The political year of 2014 will move the wheels of economy, especially the spending of campaign equipment. Politics of this year also has a business prospect, probably for the screen printing, t-shirts, banners and printing industry. The businesses related to campaign will get a profit,” he explained.

He estimated the economic impact of political activities was much more even because all this time the econom-ic growth was dominated by invest-ment in South Bali region, then with the electoral activities the economic impact would be enjoyed evenly in all the regions. (kmb27)

Ahead of election, money circulation in Bali still reasonable

Bali PostDENPASAR - Circulation of money on entering the campaign period ahead of the General Election in Bali is still

reasonable. It is evident from the amount of inflow money which reaches IDR 1.06 trillion to banks in Bali exceeding the outflow amounting to IDR 545.37 billion. Deputy of Bank Indonesia for Region III Bali-Nusra, Ananda Pulun-gan, stated there were no signs of a significant increase in the activities of cash and non-cash payment system in the preparation of legislative election to be held April 2014.

China Youth Travel Ser-vice said it will suspend new bookings with the airline and change currently booked itin-eraries that include the carrier to alternative firms, the state-run China Daily newspaper said, quoting a statement by the agency which was founded by the Youth League of the rul-ing Communist Party.

“Considering the fact that a succession of accidents have involved Malaysia Airlines re-cently, and that Chinese tourists have concerns over the carrier’s safety record, we must fulfil our responsibility of ensuring the security of our fellow citizens,” the statement said.

The Malaysia Airlines Boe-ing 777 vanished on March 8 with 239 people aboard, deviating inexplicably off its intended course between Kuala Lumpur and Beijing and flying thousands of kilometres in the wrong direction. Two-thirds of the passengers were from

China.Malaysia’s Prime Minister

Najib Razak said Monday that satellite data indicated the plane plunged into the sea in a region off western Australia, possibly after running out of fuel.

An intense, multinational operation for possible debris is ongoing, but the search was suspended Thursday due to bad weather.

Until now the flow of Chi-nese tourists to Malaysia has been accelerating -- hitting 1.8 million last year in a 15 percent annual increase -- mak-ing the Asian power the coun-try’s third-biggest source of visitors, behind only Singapore and Indonesia.

On Monday a Malaysia Airlines flight from Kuala Lumpur to Seoul diverted to Hong Kong due to electrical problems, the carrier said, add-ing to the company’s publicity troubles.

“Now the biggest concern

of our tourists to Southeast Asia is whether they will fly on Malaysia Airlines,” the China Daily quoted a tour manager at a travel agency in the eastern province of Jiangsu as saying.

“Some consumers even are willing to pay more money to book other airlines rather than going with the cheaper tickets offered by Malaysia Airlines.”

According to Chinese state media, Malaysia’s image as a tourist destination has suffered as well as that of its flag carrier.

State-owned China Interna-tional Travel Service has seen a sharp decrease in people regis-tering for tours to the country, the China Daily quoted a pub-licity officer as saying.

And, an Internet survey by Sina.com, a leading Chinese news portal, found that 77.7 percent of 59,582 respondents said the missing plane incident would “affect their going to Malaysia for tourism”.

PARIS - Beijing and Paris signed scores of deals Wednesday worth 18 billion euros ($25 billion) on the second day of a lavish state visit by Chinese leader Xi Jinping, in what President Francois Hollande said would bring much-needed growth.

Xi and his wife Peng Liyuan have been given VIP treatment on a nostalgia-tinted trip to France marking the 50th year of full diplomatic ties between the two countries -- a visit due to culminate with a concert at the Versailles chateau on Thursday.

The power couple kicked off their trip in the eastern city of Lyon on Tuesday, and a day later travelled up to Paris where Xi met with his counterpart Hollande and signed the deals.

“Eighteen billion euros of contracts -- that is jobs, growth and, most of all, significant prospects for the coming years,” Hollande said during a joint press declaration with the Chinese president.

By far the biggest deal was a Chinese order for 70 Airbus planes worth more than $10 billion.

The order covers the purchase of 43 mid-range A320 planes and 27 long-haul A330s, the European aviation giant said.

China had already announced its intention to purchase the planes but subsequently froze the order due to a row over EU plans to impose a carbon emissions levy on airlines.

This forced Airbus to take the 70 planes off its order book, so Wednes-day’s contract is considered a new purchase.

Airbus Helicopters and China’s Avi-copter also announced a deal to jointly produce 1,000 civilian helicopters over 20 years. Altogether, the two countries signed 50 agreements in areas as varied as the nuclear, financial and automotive sectors.

France lags behind some European neighbours, especially Germany, in trade and investment links with fast-growing China.

DENPASAR - The Nyepi or Day of Silence is inseparable from the ogoh-ogoh or papier mâché demon. Ahead of the Nyepi Day, a number of ogoh-ogoh statues have been ready to enliven the night of Pengerupukan. One of them is Tainsiat hamlet in North Denpasar. Local youth club has completed their ogoh-ogoh entitled Kalikamaya.

“This Kalikamaya is the student of Goddess Durga assigned to pun-ish people who do not execute holy sacrifice (yajna) sincerely,” said Chairman of the Yowana Saka Bhuana customary youth club of Tainsiat hamlet, Gusti Ngurah Gede Agung Mariswara.

According to him, the ogoh-ogoh was purely made by the members of local youth club. There were at least 10 active members working for approxi-mately three weeks with the designer Nyoman Sentana Putra.

“There is no interference from

the artisans or from other hamlets. Incidentally, the designer is graduated from the Indonesia Institute of the Arts (ISI). This ogoh-ogoh is purely prepared by the creativity of the youth club. Anyhow, in keeping with the passage of time, the ogoh-ogoh will always exist,” he explained. Agung said the costs incurred to make the Kalikamaya ogoh-ogoh reached IDR 15 million. In addition to relying on the cash of the youth club, his party also looked for donation to cover the expenses of the ogoh-ogoh making.

“Styrofoam material is expensive costing up to IDR 900,000 per cubic meter. We spent three cubic meters with the best quality,” he explained.

Similar opinion was also expressed by Vice Chairman of the Werdhi Yowana customary youth club of Tampakgangsul hamlet, North Den-pasar, Diksa Janitra. Styrofoam and metal frame needed much budget to make the ogoh-ogoh entitled Cambra Berag. Nevertheless, it was cheaper than the spending of Tainsiat, namely

IDR12 million.“This Cambra Berag narrates about

a human having knowledge about black magic and then transforms itself into a dog. We spent IDR 12 million of cash and gets donation as the participa-tion of local hamlet. The ogoh-ogoh is made by the native youth and we are never looking for an artisan. Even, our people are often asked to help in the making of ogoh-ogoh at other hamlets,” he explained.

Diksa and his colleagues in the Werdhi Yowana youth club consid-ered the ogoh-ogoh a means of cul-tural preservation. On that account, his party always carried out regeneration in order the youth of every generation could make an ogoh-ogoh.

“This tradition may not disappear and should not be linked to politics. Every year, we always teach the youth club members in order they can make an ogoh-ogoh by themselves. For instance, we teach them how to make the hand, head or coloring,” he concluded. (kmb32)

“The forum is a kind of a dialog between ASEAN and OECD to discuss what can be done in Indo-nesia,” the minister explained after the opening ceremony.

The forum’s theme is “Regional Competitiveness for Sustained Growth”.

OECD Secretary General Ang-

gel Gurria in her opening remarks expressed her hope that the meet-ing would reach an agreement that can boost the economy of ASEAN member countries.

The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) was officially born on 30 September 1961. Other countries

joined in, starting with Japan in 1964.

Russia, which has close rela-tions with Brazil, China, India, Indonesia and South Africa through “enhanced engagement” program, is negotiating to become a member of the OECD.

Together with them, the OECD brings around its table 40 countries that account for 80 percent of world trade and investment, giving it a pivotal role in addressing the chal-lenges facing the world economy.

KUTA - Recently, in front of the Kuta Beach Lifeguard Headquar-ters, a 2013 Kawasaki Ultra 300X jet ski that was used in last year’s Oakley Pro Bali ASP World Tour event at Keramas Beach in Gianyar was formally handed over to Bali Lifeguard Department (Balawista) Coordinator Mr. Ketut Ipel. “For us here at the lifeguard department this is very extraordinary, to receive equipment like this that is new and very sophisticated from Oakley, for the service of our community,” said Ipel.

The Kawasaki jet ski is a state of the art watercraft with a supercharged, intercooled four-stroke engine that produces some 300 horsepower with a retail price in the USA of around $20,000 USD, and would cost much more when imported into Indonesia.

Two of these Kawasaki jet ski’s were used at last year’s Oakley Pro Bali World Tour event in Keramas from June 18-29, where the world’s top 34 professional surfers and two wildcards, one of which was Indonesia’s Oney Anwar, competed in Stop 5 (of 10) of the 2013 ASP World Tour.

“Oakley is grateful for the generous hospitality of Bali. The local support truly made a great impact in the overall success of the Oakley Pro Bali (OPB),” said Pat McIlvain, VP of Global Sports Marketing at Oakley. “The local Balawista in particular played an integral role in the safe execution of the event. As an additional way of saying thank you, the brand has donated one of the OPB Jet Ski’s to the Balinese lifeguards. We hope that it helps them to apply their expertise with speed and preci-sion to keep the Balinese coastline safe.”

Luzi Sanjaya (representing Oakley), Ketut Ipel (Balawista Badung Coordinator), and Made Sujana (Equipment Safety Manager) met at the lifeguard headquarters at Kuta Beach to formally sign the documents that allowed the official transfer to be completed.

“Since the jet ski has been in storage for awhile, our first step will be to check it and do some simple maintenance, then it will be put into use,” said Made Sujana.

The jet ski will be used by the lifeguards for rescue purposes, training exercises, and for safety assistance during surfing and other water sport competitions in Bali.

Russia has mounted a campaign against the resolution, claiming the dispute is an East-West issue. Sergeyev said he has been speaking to regional groups and explaining that Russia violated the U.N. Charter that guarantees the sovereignty, territorial integrity and unity of Ukraine and that the country is not a member of any bloc.

Unlike resolutions in the powerful Security Council, resolutions in the 193-member General Assembly cannot be vetoed and are not legally binding, though they do reflect world opinion.

While Ukraine has a lot of sympa-thy among U.N. members, Russia has a lot of clout and diplomats say there are likely to be a significant number

of abstentions. One diplomat, speaking on con-

dition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue, said between 80 and 90 “yes” votes would send a strong message of opposition to Russia. But that would mean support from less than half the U.N. member states. “The resolution will be voted in favor,” Sergeyev said. “But the importance is how deeply the United Nations membership understands the danger of the challenges the United Nations faces these days.”

He said Russia’s takeover and an-nexation of Crimea undermines the basic principles of the U.N. Charter and the 1994 Budapest Memorandum under which Russia, the United States

and Britain guaranteed Ukraine’s ter-ritorial integrity when it surrendered its share of Soviet nuclear arsenals to Moscow after the Soviet Union broke up in 1991.

Crimea has been at the center of Europe’s greatest geopolitical crisis since the end of the Cold War. Rus-sian troops took over the Ukrainian peninsula, where Russia’s Black Sea fleet is based, and Moscow officially annexed Crimea following a referen-dum last week.

The upheaval in Crimea is the fallout of months of anti-government protests and outbursts of violence that led to the ouster of Ukraine’s pro-Russia president, Viktor Yanukovych, who fled last month.

TOKYO — A Japanese court on Thursday ordered the release of the world’s longest-serving death row inmate, saying investigators had likely fabricated evidence and ordering a retrial in a murder case that left the man behind bars for nearly half a century.

The Shizuoka District Court suspended the death sentence for 78-year-old Iwao Hakamada, a former professional boxer convicted in the 1966 murder of a family. More than 45 of the 48 years he has spent in jail have been on death row, making Hakamada the longest-serving such inmate, according to Guinness World Records.

Hakamada was sentenced to death in 1968, but was not ex-ecuted because of a lengthy appeals process. It took 27 years for the Supreme Court to deny his first appeal for a retrial. He filed a second appeal in 2008, and the court finally ruled in his favor on Thursday.

The court said DNA analysis obtained by Hakamada’s lawyers suggested that investigators had fabricated evidence. It ordered a retrial in the case, making Hakamada only the six death row inmate to get a retrial in Japan’s history of postwar criminal justice. Four of the previous inmates were acquitted in their retrials, while the fifth case is still pending.

BEIJING — Police say a man involved in a property dispute has stabbed six people to death in a Beijing district and injured others.

The microblog of the police’s

publicity office says the attacks happened around noon Thursday in a village in Huairou district. Beijing covers a large area and some rural areas come under its remit.

The statement says police cap-tured a 34-year-old suspect. Initial

investigations have found that a resident in Huairou district’s Wanghua village stabbed “many people” with a knife because of a property dispute involving his family. It says the injured have been taken to hospital, but didn’t say how many.

AntaraAMBON - Archeology Department of Ambon, Maluku, has found

an ancient site in Ujir Island, Aru Islands, that has been identified as a village called “Uifana”.

“We don’t know yet how old the site is, but based on the archeological objects that we found, such as Chinese ceramics, it might have come from the 17 or 18th century,” the archeologist team leader, Wuri Handoko, clarified in Ambon, on Thursday.

However, Wuri added that they needed more time to get a closer look, since there was also a possibility that the Uifana Village is much older, as theoretically, the settlement came first before the trade.

The Ufiana Village was found during a 12-day survey that has been held since March 11. The site was located about 1.5 kilometers from Ujir Village that is surrounded by an artificial river made by the ancient residents called “wabil”.

Besides the artificial river, they also found a two-meter high traditional wall and wells made from corals and andesite stones.

“The Ufiana site was surrounded by an artificial river, which was used as their defense system during that age. But then, it was broken during the war with Japan in 1940s and the locals moved to Ujir Vil-lage,” Wuri explained.

A colonial fortress that was used as a mosque was also tracked. Its identification was based on the local’s information in Ujir Village, that the triple layers roof with a straight pillar in that ex-fortress was similar with traditional mosque around Maluku area in 16-17th century.

“We still have to identify whether it was a Portuguese or a Dutch for-tress, but we presume, from its construction’s technique and its location on a highland, that it was owned by Europeans,” Wuri declared.

The use of the ex-fortress that functioned as a mosque also created another theory that Islam had entered Uifana Village around the 17-18th century.

“Hence we need to hold further research to dig out the Uifana Village’s age, trade activity and its relation with Islam,” Wuri explained.

The next plan of Wuri and his team was to hold an excavation and to approach the Ujir Village’s community in order to get access to an ancient Al-Quran text that might be one of the keys to open Ufiana’s history.

“We keep trying to approach them, as the locals say it is a taboo to show the text to outsiders,” Wuri pointed out.

“How are you bro? Still better in my time, no?!” runs a phrase com-monly printed alongside the late army general, toppled following more than three decades in power when the Asian financial crisis tore into Indonesia.

As voters gear up for legislative elections next month and presiden-tial polls in July, disillusionment is running high with the country’s chaotic democracy, notorious for money-grubbing politicians and weak decision-making, while Su-harto nostalgia grows.

Sympathisers have chosen to brush aside the glaring bad points of his regime, known as the “New Order” and widely regarded as one of the most brutal and corrupt of the 20th century.

Vote-seeking politicians play up their links to Suharto, particularly from his former political vehicle Golkar, crowds flock to his tomb and a memorial has been set up in his birthplace in Kemusuk, in his heartland of main Java island.

“I like him because when vio-lence erupted, he just crushed it,” said Sumarah, who like many Indo-nesians goes by one name, during a recent visit to the memorial in central Java.

“People lived in peace, there were no demonstrations like nowa-days, which cost the economy a lot,” added the 46-year-old, referring to the frequent protests that are now part of daily life in the nation.

Suharto became president in 1967 when he was a young army general, shortly after putting down an attempted coup, and on the back of a bloody massacre of hundreds of thousands of alleged commu-nists and sympathisers which was encouraged by the military.

His long rule was marked by se-vere repression and colossal corrup-tion -- graft watchdog Transparency International ranks him as the most corrupt leader in history, estimating he embezzled between $15 and $35 billion during his rule.

But a growing number look longingly at the Suharto era, prais-ing him for bringing stability after

Indonesia’s painful birth pangs that followed Dutch colonial rule and overseeing an economic boom.

In a bustling market in Yogya-karta, central Java, T-shirts at a stall show a picture of Suharto next to the words “Don’t you miss that long-gone era of food self-sufficien-cy and guaranteed security?”

Such sentiments tap into dis-content with surging inflation and among many young people struggling to find a job each year in the country of around 250 mil-lion people led by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

On weekends up to 2,000 people flock to the tomb of Suharto and his wife outside the Javanese city of Solo, which is set in manicured hills and packed with hawkers sell-ing T-shirts and framed pictures of the couple.

As well as the memorial in Kemusuk, where his speeches are played on loudspeakers and a small museum displays photos from his life, there is talk of turning his house in the capital Jakarta into a museum.

He spent the final years of his life there until his death in 2008 at the age of 86.

Politicians, particularly from Golkar, which was used by Suharto to give his iron-fisted rule a sem-blance of democracy but which is now a fully-fledged party, believe they have a lot to gain from the nostalgia.

“This will certainly benefit Gol-kar,” Aburizal Bakrie, the party’s presidential candidate, told the Jakarta Post newspaper in a recent interview.

The party, which is the second-biggest in parliament and in the ruling coalition, is also fielding one of Suharto’s daughters, Siti Hediati, as a parliamentary candidate at the April 9 polls.

“The daughter of Yogyakarta, the daughter of (Suharto) -- honest and to be trusted,” runs the slogan next to a smiling Hediati on campaign billboards, with a picture of her father in the background.

“It was hoped the reform era

would bring better conditions but that didn’t really happen,” Hediati told AFP, adding increased interest in Suharto was “genuinely from the people” and not instigated by the family.

‘Orchestrated’ nostalgiaHowever some believe the up-

surge in nostalgia has been carefully orchestrated by those who want to see members of the Suharto clan return to power.

Observers say the trend is due in part to the authorities’ failure to punish members of the old regime or establish a national process to come to terms with the past.

Anti-Suharto activist Fadjroel Rachman said Indonesia should emulate countries such as Argentina with its truth commission to inves-tigate crimes committed during a dictatorship or Cambodia and its UN-backed tribunal trying leaders of the Khmer Rouge regime.

He is among many who are hor-rified at the growing support for a dictator who relied heavily on the army to crush dissent and made hundreds of political prisoners.

Agung Kurniawan, a Yogya-karta-based artist whose works were inspired by the brutality of Suharto’s regime, said he would fight any attempt by members of the dictator’s clan to return to power.

“We will fight again, we will go back to the streets,” he said, referring to the huge protest move-ment that preceded Suharto’s 1998 resignation.

Despite the nostalgia, Golkar and others trying to capitalise on it look set to be disappointed at the upcoming polls.

The main opposition Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle is ex-pected to dominate both elections, particularly after the recent nomi-nation of popular Jakarta governor Joko Widodo as its presidential candidate.

He has no links to the “New Order” and analysts say his popular-ity signals Indonesians are keen to move forward beyond the Suharto era, not back.

Ukraine’s U.N. Ambassador Yuriy Sergeyev said in an interview Wednesday with The Associated Press that the resolution has “several dozen” co-sponsors and support from democratic countries around the world — but he wouldn’t predict the size of the “yes” vote.

Police: Man stabs 6 to death in China, hurts more

“The Malaysian government, the airline, it’s just all been incred-ibly poor.”

Scores of Chinese relatives protested outside Malaysia’s embassy in Beijing on Tuesday, and a day later Premier Li Keqiang urged Malaysia to involve “more Chinese experts” in the investigation.

While Malaysia believes the plane was deliberately diverted, other scenarios include a hijacking, pilot sabotage or a crisis that incapacitated the crew and left the plane to fly on auto-pilot until it ran out of fuel.

Focus has also been on the pilot, Captain Zaharie Ahmad Shah, with the FBI Wednesday saying it was close to completing an analy-sis of data from a flight simulator taken from his home.

Malaysian authorities had sought FBI help to recover files deleted from the hard drive.

So far, no information implicating the captain or anyone else has emerged.

BULELENG - Sambangan, a village perching on a green hill in the subdistrict of Sukasada, is 6 only km from the town of Singaraja. It is located adjacent to Ambengan village only separated by a fairly wide ra-vine. On that account, both villages geographically do not have remarkable differences. Aside from surround-ed by dazzling terraced rice fields, this village also has the potential of waterfall and dam being perfect for trekking and ecotourism as well as meditation because it has many places offering the peace of mind. For those who want to remember the past time by bathing in the river, this village has many natural pools along the river with clean water.

The NBA’s best home team end-ed a two-game losing streak, took a 2-1 lead in the season series against the two-time defending champions and rebuilt a three-game advantage in the race for the Eastern Confer-ence’s top seed. Indiana (52-20) also clinched its second straight Central Division crown, something it hadn’t done since 1998-99 and 1999-2000.

LeBron James scored 38 points, but missed a potential go-ahead 3-pointer late. Chris Bosh had a jump shot at the buzzer to win it but it hit nothing but air. George had two monster dunks — one over LeBron James — to get the Pacers back in the game.

San Antonio’s Tim Duncan had 29 points, 13 rebounds and five assists as the Spurs overcame a fourth-quarter collapse to beat the Denver Nuggets 108-103 for their 15th straight victory. Danny

Green scored 16 points before leav-ing with a foot injury early in the second half. Tiago Splitter, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili had 10 points each for San Antonio (55-16), which maintained the league’s best record.

Aaron Brooks scored 25 points and Kenneth Faried had 24 points, including 15 points in a frenzied final quarter for Denver. At Sac-ramento, California, Carmelo Anthony scored 36 points and J.R. Smith added 29 points as the New York Knicks held off a furious rally to beat the Kings 107-99 and move a game closer to a playoff berth.

New York led by 24 in the third quarter before Sacramento surged back, and the Knicks needed a scintillating shooting performance from Anthony and Smith to end a two-game losing streak. DeMarcus Cousins had 32 points, 15 rebounds and eight assists for the Kings.

KEY BISCAYNE, Florida — Novak Djokovic ben-efited from an erroneous call and claimed he didn’t realize he had broken the rules. When Andy Murray walked to the net and challenged him about it, Djokovic responded with a shrug and a sheepish smile. Murray lost the dispute, and the match. The pivotal ruling against the defending champion helped Djokovic win 7-5, 6-3 in the quarterfinals of the Sony Open.

Roger Federer was up a service break twice in the sec-ond set but lost to No. 20-seeded Kei Nishikori 3-6, 7-5, 6-4. Nishikori will play Djokovic on Friday. The point that aggravated Murray occurred at the start of the 12th game, when he was serving at 5-6. Djokovic charged forward to volley a short ball and hit it for a winner.

Murray argued — and TV replays confirmed — he should have been awarded the point because Djokovic’s racket was on the far side of the net when he hit the ball. Chair umpire Damian Steiner declined to change his call, and such rulings can’t be appealed for video review. Mur-ray briefly discussed the matter with Djokovic.

“I went and asked Novak, and he told me he was over the net,” Murray said. “Look, it might be my mistake,” Djokovic said. “I think I crossed the net with the racket. I didn’t touch the net. Maybe the rule is that you are not allowed to pass on his side with the racket. I’m not sure. You tell me.”

That is indeed the rule. Djokovic said that if he had understood it correctly, he would have conceded the point. A flustered Murray committed unforced backhand errors on the next three points to lose the game and the set. “Obviously, that distracted him mentally, and after that he gave the set away,” Djokovic said.

Madrid’s loss at the Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium came four days after it squandered a chance to effectively end Barcelona’s title defense, with Lionel Messi out-dueling Ronaldo by scoring a hat trick for a thrilling 4-3 win in the Spanish capital. These consecutive losses came after Carlo Ancelotti’s side had gone undefeated for 31 straight matches.

“We have to keep working, fighting and ask our fans for forgiveness,” said Madrid full back Marcelo. “It’s tough to do what we did, to keep winning for so many games. We have lost two games. They aren’t more important, but they are critical. Now everything is much more difficult.” Diego Costa’s second-half header gave Atletico a 1-0 victory at home over Granada as it moved three points clear of Madrid with eight rounds remaining.

Lionel Messi and Neymar helped Bar-celona stay one point behind Atletico as it rose into second place, but the 3-0 win over Celta Vigo came at the cost of goal-keeper Victor Valdes tearing a right knee ligament. “I am happy for the goals and for having won the other day at the Santiago Bernabeu,” said Neymar. “(But) the vic-tory is sad because of Valdes’ injury.”

Ronaldo struck first at Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium when his free kick took a de-flection off the arm of Bacca, catching goalkeeper Antonio “Beto” Bastos out of position and helpless as he watched the ball float into his net. But Bacca equalized from Jose Antonio Reyes’ pass after Xabi Alonso had lost possession. Madrid then wasted several chances, and Sevilla tilted the match in its favor in the second half when Ivan Rakitic used a superb control of a pass before playing Bacca clear to beat goalie Diego Lopez for the winner.

MILAN — Carlos Tevez scored twice to move top of the Serie A scoring charts and help league leader Juventus beat 10-man Parma 2-1 for a record 15th home win on Wednesday. Tevez has now scored 18 league goals in his first season at Juventus following his move from Manchester City. “Better than this is impossible, but the important thing is that the team won,” Tevez said

Cristian Molinaro reduced the deficit but Parma striker Amauri was sent off three minutes later. Despite the numerical disadvantage Parma almost snatched a draw but Molinaro was denied by a goal-line clearance and the visitors had strong penalty appeals turned down. “I don’t know if it was a penalty, those who understand football know how to judge it,” Parma coach Roberto Donadoni said. “I think sometimes you have to take into account players’ tricks, but you only have a matter of seconds to do that on the pitch.”

Juventus restored its 14-point advantage over Roma, which beat Torino 2-1 on Tuesday and has played a game less than its rivals. Napoli moved six points behind Roma with a 4-2 win at Catania and boosted its chances of securing the final Champions League spot as Fiorentina lost 2-0 at home to AC Milan.

Mario Balotelli set up one goal and scored the other to help under-fire boss Clarence Seedorf, who was reportedly on the verge of the sack before last weekend’s draw at Lazio.

“And some people say I won’t even be going to the World Cup,” Balotelli said. “This victory didn’t save anyone, because there wasn’t anyone to save. The dressing room is united. Of course, we’re upset because we won’t get into the Champions League and maybe not into the Europa League either, but not disunited.”

Atalanta maintained its push for a Europa League spot as it beat Livorno 2-0 and leapfrogged Lazio into seventh after the capital side lost 2-0 at Genoa. Also, it was: Chievo Verona 3, Bologna 0; Sassuolo 1, Sampdoria 2; and Cagliari 1, Hellas Verona 0.

RIO DE JANEIRO — The Brazilian football federation has inaugurated the training center it will use during the World Cup.

Wednesday’s inauguration of the Granja Comary, located about an hour from Rio de Janeiro, came two months before the national

team arrives to begin its World Cup preparations.

Brazil regularly uses the training center, which underwent extensive renovation for this year’s World Cup.

Coach Luiz Felipe Scolari and assistant Carlos Alberto Parreira were on hand for the inauguration.

When Scolari arrived, federation

president Jose Maria Marin asked, with a smile, “is everything the way you wanted?”

In addition to the training fields, the Granja Comary also has 39 suites available for players and the coaching staff, as well as recre-ational areas. Brazil is hosting the World Cup for the first time since 1950.

ASTANA, Kazakhstan — UEFA’s 54 member countries

have voted to create a Nations League competition to start in September 2018. The competi-tion will replace most continental international friendlies and feed into qualifying playoffs for the 2020 European Championship. It could later be incorporated into European qualifying for the 2022 World Cup.

“This is a very important deci-sion for the future of football at the level of national teams,” UEFA

President Michel Pla-tini said after the vote at

European football’s annual congress. Platini had pledged

to raise the status and commercial value of international football. It has struggled against competition from popular and lucrative Euro-pean domestic leagues and UEFA’s own Champions League.

UEFA acknowledged Thursday that “friendly internationals are not providing adequate sporting competition.” The Nations League tournament format is yet to be final-ized, although it foresees 54 teams ranked in four divisions playing September-November 2018. The 12 highest- ranked teams would play in four three-team groups in Division A. Those group winners would advance to a finals tourna-ment in June 2019.

All 54 teams would still play in traditional Euro 2020 quali-

fying groups, which would be played March-November 2019. The Euro 2020 playoffs would then be scheduled in March 2020. That lineup would be decided by Nations League results of teams which did not qualify directly in the top-two qualifying group positions.

Euro 2020 is being played across Europe in 13 different host cities which will be picked in September. UEFA will likely try to include the subsequent Nations League in the European qualifying program for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. FIFA is consulting over redrawing football’s international calendar to play that tournament in November-December 2022 to avoid the desert heat of Qatar’s summer. “We have to see when the World Cup will take place and we can discuss this further,” UEFA secretary general Gianni Infantino said.

GLASGOW, Scotland — Celt ic clinched its third straight Scottish league title in stylish and typically dominant fashion on Wednesday, beating Partick Thistle 5-1 to take an unassailable 26-point lead in the standings with seven matches still to play.

Anthony Stokes scored twice and Liam Henderson, Stefan Johansen and

Kris Commons grabbed the other goals for Celtic, which secured the champion-ship at the earliest date in the calendar since 1929.

“You could feel it over the last couple of weeks,” Celtic manager Neil Lennon said, “the anticipation building and the style in which we finished it was fantastic, symptomatic of the way this team is.”

With fierce Glasgow rival Rangers spending its second season out of the

top flight as punishment for financial mismanagement, Celtic has had free reign in the Scottish Premiership over the past two years.

Neil Lennon’s side has lost just one league game all season on its way to seal-ing a 45th league title. Rangers has won 54 championships.

“To lose one game and break a clean sheet record into the bargain, it has been an exceptional,” Lennon said.

Madrid loses to slip in race; Atletico, Barca winAssociated Press Writer

BARCELONA, Spain — Real Madrid lost 2-1 at Sevilla on Wednesday in the aftermath of its stinging “clasico” defeat as it slipped behind in the Spanish title race, while Atletico Madrid and Barcelona kept winning to move ahead of their rival in the standings. Cristiano Ronaldo put Madrid in charge with his league-leading 27th goal of the season in the 14th minute, but Sevilla striker Carlos Bacca scored twice, in the 19th and 73rd, to complete the comeback.

six games in a row as it remained in fifth place. Atletico stayed unbeaten at home in league play this season after limiting Granada’s attack with its stout defense before Diego Costa turned home Jose Sosa’s corner kick in the 63rd for his 24th league goal of the season.

Earlier at Camp Nou, Valdes’ right knee buckled after a routine save in the 22nd, and he had to be shuttled off the pitch with his gloved hands covering his face. The club later said he will need surgery, which would rule him out for the season. Neymar netted twice from passes by Alexis Sanchez. The Brazil striker opened the scoring in the sixth minute and struck again in the 67th after Messi recorded his 22nd league goal of the season on the half-hour mark.

Celta, coached by former Barcelona player and B-team manager Luis Enrique, never mounted a challenge and its high defensive line proved easy pickings for the Catalan side’s passing game.

Messi got things rolling when he dribbled at Celta’s defense and spotted Alexis’s run down the right edge of the area, where he received Messi’s pass and squared for Neymar to tap home.

After Jose Pinto went on to replace the injured Valdes, Messi took Andres Iniesta’s pass, rounded ‘keeper Yoel Rodriguez and fired the ball inside the upright for his eighth goal in his last four matches. Pain in his left leg kept Iniesta from returning after halftime, but he said he expected to be fit to play at Espanyol on Saturday.

The 38-year-old Pinto was tested in the 52nd and was up to the challenge when he made back-to-back reflex saves to turn away Augusto Fernandez’s powerful strike and Santi Mina’s follow-up attempt. He went on to make two more noteworthy saves. Neymar hit a second time from a long pass by Alexis when he managed to slot the ball through two defenders and beyond Rodriguez.

Danny

So, in explaining Tri Hita Karana academically based on ratio and general logic, as started all this time it needs to be sharpen and developed further.

“I’m a fan of marriage, but I recognize that most people in their lives will have two to three longtime relationships — which means one to two breakups. And so we need to learn how to do this better,” she said.

An Australian-led international search team is scouring an area in the southern Indian Ocean for the missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370.

It marked the second suspension within three days for the planes from several nations that, along with ships, have fought a losing battle against fierce winds and mountainous seas in the remote southern Indian Ocean as they hunt for hard evidence that the plane crashed.

“Today’s search operations have been suspended due to bad weather,” the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA), which is coordinating the search, said on its Twit-ter account.

The agency initially said ships were leaving the search area along with the planes, but later announced the ships would stay and try to continue the search.

“Bad weather expected for next 24 hours,” it tweeted.Malaysia had said late Wednesday that images taken in

recent days by a French satellite showed “122 potential ob-jects” adrift in the vast area, but nothing has been recovered yet that would confirm the plane’s fate.

The Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 is presumed to have crashed on March 8 in the Indian Ocean with 239 people aboard after mysteriously diverting from its Kuala Lumpur-Beijing path and apparently flying for hours in the opposite direction.

Five ships from Australia and China also were set to re-sume searching the zone.

The drama is playing out in a wild expanse of ocean de-scribed by Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott as “about as close to nowhere as it’s possible to be”, and known for gale-force winds and towering waves.

The new satellite images provided by European aerospace giant Airbus depicted some objects as long as 23 metres (75 feet), Malaysian Transport Minister Hishammuddin Hussein said.

Seeking closure, anguished families of those aboard are desperately awaiting hard evidence, which the aviation in-dustry hopes can also provide clues to what caused one of aviation’s greatest mysteries.

US law firm Ribbeck Law Chartered International fired the first salvo Wednesday in an expected barrage of lawsuits on behalf of grieving families. The firm is targeting Malaysia Airlines and Boeing.

“We are going to be filing the lawsuits for millions of dol-lars per each passenger based on prior cases that we have done involving crashes like this one,” the firm’s head of aviation litigation, Monica Kelly, told reporters in Kuala Lumpur.

‘Appalling’ handlingMH370 relatives have endured more than a fortnight of

agonising uncertainty. Two-thirds of the passengers were from China, and relatives there have criticised Malaysia in acid terms, accusing the government and airline of a cover-up and botching the response.

The sister of New Zealand victim Paul Weeks lashed out Thursday. “The whole situation has been handled appall-ingly, incredibly insensitively,” Sara Weeks told Radio Live in New Zealand.

PERTH - Thunderstorms and gale-force winds grounded the international air search for wreckage from Flight MH370 on Thursday, frustrating the luckless effort yet again just as new satellite images of floating objects sparked hopes of a breakthrough.
