Deputy Chairman of the Bali House, Ida Bagus Putu Sukarta, on Sunday (Oct 21) regretted and deplored the attitude of the governor of Bali who was reluctant to revoke the utilization permit of the man-

grove forest on the investor. Sukarta decisively expressed his opposition to the issuance of permit and sup-ported the position of factions in the House as well as the Chairman of the Bali House Cok Ratmadi who

also rejected the permit. The House planned to issue a recommendation in order the permit was revoked. “I strongly support what Chairman of the Bali House Cok Ratmadi said so that the permit is revoked,” said

Sukarta doubling as Chairman of the Gerindra Bali. He added the permit should be reviewed. Amidst the swift waves of denial against the permit, the governor should dare to revoke the permit and did not impose his will. “People of Bali want the permit to be revoked. Therefore, the governor should not impose the will. Never act arrogantly,” he said.

Further, he said though the issu-ance of permit had complied with all the rules, but when people rejected the Governor of Bali should not

ignore the aspirations by hiding behind the legal compliance of the permits. “The government should not just hide behind the legality and compliance of the permit with the rules but ignore the people’s aspirations and the environmental damage that will occur. For decades, Balinese people have attempted to preserve the mangrove forest, why is it so easy to give it to investors?” he asked.

Chopra, who turned 80 last month, was one of India’s iconic film-makers and was known as the “king of ro-mance”. He also owned one of the industry’s biggest produc-tion houses and studios, Yash Raj Films, which recently ventured into Hollywood movie production as well.

Chopra’s career spanned

five decades and his last film as director, “Jab Tak Hai Jaan,” Til There is Life, opens in cinemas on November 13, on the Indian festival of Diwali.

On his birthday in Sep-tember, he had announced he wouldn’t direct any more films. Chopra was diagnosed with dengue fever last week

and had been treated at a Mumbai hospital.

Tributes poured in from fans and the film industry as people thronged to pay their respects at the offices of Yash Raj Films in suburban Mumbai.

“My mind is filled with hundreds of private and per-sonal moments that we all

spent together during this large association with him,” actor Amitabh Bachchan, who worked on several films with Chopra, wrote in a blog post.

Born in 1932 in Lahore, now in Pakistan, Chopra was favored by leading Indian ac-tors, with his movies seen as a sure-fire way to become a hit with audiences.

“They shall ever remain stored within us and like all other memories shall give value and belief to what we shared together,” Bachchan added.

EvEry Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Denpasar (Bali Post)—Hitherto, a total of 20 additional rub-

bish trucks to reinforce the existing fleet of the Denpasar Sanitation and Landscap-ing Department (DKP) have not arrived. As planned, the fleet should have arrived early October 2012 to be further operated. Apparently, the delay occurred because the tender winner of the 20-truck procurement, PT Citra Daya Kreasi, was still arranging the administrative processes for the truck delivery. The Head of Denpasar Sanitation and Landscaping Agency, Ketut Wisada, told Bali Post on Sunday (Oct 21).

Wisada did not dismiss if arrival of the 20 trucks faced slight delay because the partner was still arranging the admin-istrative process. After coordinating it, he expected the entire fleet used to transport rubbish would have arrived in Denpasar late October. “Yes, we expect that ev-erything is clear at the end of October,” he said.

Considering the number of rubbish trucks was not optimal, Wisada asked the understanding of city dwellers of Denpasar if the service provided was less optimal. For certain areas, he said, the rubbish transport did not run smoothly. “After the coming and operation of the additional fleet, we make sure the problem of rubbish transport will be resolved,” he said.

On the other hand, the delay of the 20 new trucks just had an impact on the process of transporting the rubbish at some points. It happened because not all of the 32 existing trucks could be operated opti-mally become some units were damaged. As a result, the rubbish at some places should be transported till midday as at

Padangsambian, West Denpasar. One of the residents, Diah, complained

about the trucks because it remained to op-erate up to 09:00 a.m. Aside from causing the delays in transportation, the presence of rubbish trucks until noon often triggered traffic congestion, too.

Responding to the complaint, Wisada asked the resident to be patient and under-stand it. Due to restricted fleet, he said, his party was forced to implement a transport system divided into three rings, namely the ring one, two and three. Ring one covered the main roads, ring two covered the roads on the outskirts of the city and ring three included rural areas. “Due to restricted fleet, we prioritize the cleanup at the ring one. Having accomplished the ring one, it is resumed to ring two and three. Since all the trucks have to commute to the landfill, the handling of rubbish transportation lasts until approaching the noon,” he explained.

With the addition of new fleet, Wisada hoped the rubbish problem in the city of Denpasar could be overcome. For the pro-curement of new trucks, the partner was said to still have time limit until December 2012. PT Citra Daya Kreasi had won the tender as proposing the lowest bid worth IDR 6.047 billion from the top limit of IDR 6.8 billion.

As reported previously, Wisada said that Denpasar area ideally had 90 rubbish trucks to be operated. Meanwhile, the existing fleet was very far from such ideal number. Moreover, the existing 32 units of trucks had averagely seven years old and been out of order. Therefore, his party was going to propose new replacement and addition of fleet. (kmb13)

Adequately interesting ac-tivity on the series of Galun-gan feast day lies on the Pe-nampahan day, the day before Galungan. On that day, there are two unique activities that have become a tradition from generation to generation of the Hindu community in Bali.

The activities are mepatung and mebat. Both activities pose a reflection of sense of togetherness, mutual assistance and the familial relationship. Mepatung tradition is slaugh-tering pig activity where the flesh is then divided based on consultation and agreement of the group. This activity is adjusted to the affordability of group members. In other words, the group member is tailored to the size of pig that will be slaughtered.

If the pig is big enough, then the number of groups will be more. On the contrary, if the pig is small, then the number of group will be reduced. So the portion of pork obtained will be not too little. Each group mem-ber will get the same amount of pork, both types of meat as well as its weight. Each group member will get one portion. Meanwhile, a member who cannot afford it, he will divide again his portion with other

member, so that he will get a half of the portion. The price will be adjusted to the prevail-ing market price.

Determination of the group member is usually done long before the arrival of Galungan. The idea can arise from the pig owner who will offer his pig to be slaughtered together, while another can also emerge from a person gathering his friends to be invited to join the activity. After obtaining an adequate number of group members, they later find out a pig pursuant to the number of group members.

Recently, a change occurred due to cultural influence, where the tradition of mepatung be-gan to erode in keeping with the progress of time. Because of busyness, people sometimes do not have time to join in the procession. To get pork, they prefer to purchase in the mar-ket or in slaughter house. It is usually carried out by the urban community that has busyness.

According to Jero Mangku Ketut Arthana from Tengah hamlet, Marga, Tabanan, the mepatung tradition was car-ried out because each oblation should be filled with processed meat, namely meat that had been finely mixed with sea-

soning such as pepes, satay, sausage and timbungan. Such processed meat was presented to god. The place of its pre-sentation was adapted to local tradition. “There are people presenting it in guardian shrine or penunggun karang,” said Jero Mangku Sekalan from Marga.

It was lying between trust and distrust, continued Jero Mangku Arthana, where the families who did not join the mepatung on Penampahan seemed lazy and listless. Un-like the case with those who joined the mepatung, their face looked happy. Their steps also appeared creative. Similar opinion was also revealed by former Chief of Ole Customary Village, Wayan Ranci. He said that mepatung could be carried out optionally, depending on the affordability of residents. Most importantly, when pre-senting the oblations, they had entirely contained processed meats.

For people who raised pigs, they would not join the me-patung group but undertake ninggungin (roast suckling pig) on the Penampahan day. In addition to the party, the meat could also be presented as the offerings of gratitude.

In conjunction with the Lovina Festival on Sunday (Oct 21), the bull race attraction was held and followed by the group of bull race aficionados throughout Buleleng. In that attraction was presented ten pairs of Bali cattle showing off their racing action in the presence of tourists. Those native cattle to Bali were presented by groups from Sawan, Banjar, Su-kasada and Buleleng subdistrict. They were Gopala Jaya Group (Sawan village), Putra Gopala (Dencarik village), Eka Gopala (Banjar Tegal village), Witari (Bebetin), Surya Buwana (Panji village), Giri Lestari (Galungan village) and Putra Gembala (Ka-liasem village).

More interestingly, the attrac-

tion was warmly appreciated by foreign tourists who were spend-ing holidays in Lovina. Even, they scrambled to come up onto the plow and then took action on the racing track.

The Head of Buleleng Cul-ture and Tourism Agency, Jro Warkadea, amidst the event said that Buleleng Regency had a firm commitment to preserve the bull race attraction as a typi-cal agrarian art of Buleleng. As planned, there should be at least three parades in some parts of Buleleng within a year. “Aside from preserving the tradition, the bull race is also intended to give a different nuance to North Bali tourist attraction,” he said. Nine people died and nearly 300 were injured when an unusually shallow magnitude-5.1 quake hit the town of Lorca on May 11, 2011. It was the country’s worst quake in more than 50 years, causing mil-lions of euros in damage to a region with an already fragile economy.

Using satellite images, scientists from Canada, Italy and Spain found the quake ruptured a fault running near a basin that had been weakened by 50 years of groundwater extrac-tion in the area.

During this period, the water table dropped by 250 meters (274 yards) as farmers bored ever deeper wells to help produce the fruit, veg-etables and meat that are exported from Lorca to the rest of Europe. In other words, the industry that propped up the local economy in southern Spain may have under-mined the very ground on which

Lorca is built.The researchers noted that even

without the strain caused by water extraction, a quake would likely have occurred at some point. But the extra stress of pumping vast amounts of water from a nearby aquifer may have been enough to trigger a quake at that particular time and place, said lead researcher Pablo J. Gonzalez of the University of Western Ontario, Canada.

Miguel de las Doblas Lavigne, a geologist with Spain’s National Natural Science Museum who has worked on the same theory but was not involved in the study, said the Lorca quake was in the cards.

“This has been going on for years in the Mediterranean areas, all very famous for their agricul-ture and plastic greenhouses. They are just sucking all the water out of the aquifers, drying them out,”

he told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. “From Lorca to (the regional capital of) Murcia you can find a very depleted water level.” De las Doblas said it was “no coincidence that all the aftershocks were located on the exact position of maximum depletion.”

“The reason is clearly related to the farming, it’s like a sponge you drain the water from; the weight of the rocks makes the terrain subside and any small variation near a very active fault like the Alhama de Murcia may be the straw that breaks the camel*s back, which is what happened,” he said. He said excess water extraction was com-mon in Spain.

“Everybody digs their own well, they don’t care about any-thing,” he said. “I think in Lorca you may find that some 80 percent of wells are illegal.”

There are no longer summer camps geared toward children with cystic fibrosis. Though the genetic disease is not contagious, doctors found that children who attended the camps put each other at risk, spreading potentially deadly infections among their vulnerable lungs.

With the lessons of those camps in mind, schools now take special care to separate children with cystic fibrosis. But the administrators of a California middle school have taken these precautions one step further, ordering a boy to transfer schools not because he suffers from cystic fibrosis but because he has genetic markers associated with the disease, a decision that seems to conflict with medical understanding of the condition.

Colman Chadam, 11, was asked to leave Jordan Middle School in Palo Alto, because it was thought he might pose a risk to another student at the school who did suffer from the incurable condition, according to news reports. His parents are contesting the school’s decision in court, claiming that because their son does not actually have the disease he does not need to be

separated from children who do. Colman’s parents notified Jor-

dan Middle School on a medical disclosure form that a test done 11 years ago showed their son had genetic markers for cystic fibrosis, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Cystic fibrosis is caused by de-fects in a gene that helps regulate mucus production throughout the body. These mutations can cause thick mucus to build up in the lungs, leading to breathing problems and life-threatening infections.

Defects in the gene associated with cystic fibrosis are relatively common, with about 1 in 29 Cau-casian Americans carrying the mutation, according to the National Institutes of Health. But because the cystic fibrosis gene is recessive, children have to inherit two defec-tive copies, one from each parent, in order to have the condition.

Laurie Fink, a spokeswoman for the Cystic Fibrosis Founda-tion, a nonprofit organization that funds research on curing the disease, said it is possible, how-ever, for someone to carry two defective genes without showing signs of the condition.

SEATTLE - There was once a time when the launch of a new Windows operating system was a huge deal for the technology de-partments in many businesses. Not anymore. Microsoft Corp’s release of Windows 8 on Friday is likely to be a non-event for most companies -- and some experts say many may never adopt it.

The system may appear to offer something for everyone: touch-screen functionality for tablet enthusiasts, a slick new interface for the younger set, and multiple versions to make it compatible with traditional desktop PC software.

Many businesses, though, say there is no compelling reason to adopt. Indeed, a large number have yet to make the transition to Win-dows 7 from Windows XP.

“Windows 8 is, frankly, more of a consumer platform than it is a business platform, so it’s not something that makes any sense from a business perspective at this juncture,” said Doug Johnson, head of risk management policy at the American Bankers Association, whose members are among the world’s biggest technology buyers. “There is really no additional busi-

ness functionality that Windows 8 gives you that I see.”

For most of the past two decades, that sort of comment about a new version of Windows might have set off panic in Microsoft’s Redmond, Washington, headquarters. Not now. Windows 8, in a stark reflec-tion of how the technology business is changing, will rise or fall on how it is received in the consumer market.

That doesn’t mean Microsoft executives are publicly saying they won’t be going after enterprise cus-tomers with the radical new version of its flagship product.

“The lines between the consumer and the enterprise are blurring,” said Ron Markezich, head of Microsoft’s Enterprise & Partner Group. “Busi-ness customers are looking forward to Windows 8 because they don’t have to compromise between tablet and PC.”

But Microsoft’s main goal is to show it can master the new touch-optimized, mobile forms of computing pioneered by Apple Inc and Google Inc. Its colorful, action-packed advertising for the system are aimed at a young, free-wheeling audience, and its new Surface tab-lets are being positioned squarely as consumer devices.

Allegations that flamboyant BBC presenter Jimmy Savile, who died last year, operated unhindered as a paedophile for years while working for the BBC have rocked the publicly funded broadcaster.

Its new head, George Entwistle, is now under pressure to explain why the BBC dropped an investigation by its Newsnight programme into Savile last year. Mark Thompson, now the New

York Times Co’s chief executive, was in charge of the BBC at the time.

In a programme due to be aired in Britain later on Monday, a Newsnight producer behind the investigation, Meirion Jones, said he had warned his editor that the BBC was at risk of being accused of a cover-up if it did not run the story, the BBC said.

“I was sure the story would come out one way or another and...the BBC

would be accused of a cover-up,” he was quoted as saying by the BBC.

Knighted as a “Sir” by Queen Elizabeth, cigar-chomping Savile was one of the BBC’s biggest names and most recognised televi-sion personalities, and questions have been raised about whether the broadcaster turned a blind eye to his activities.

Police investigating alleged abuse

by Savile opened a criminal inquiry last week, saying more than 200 potential victims had come forward since an investigation by another Brit-ish TV channel claimed he had preyed on children for decades.

Rival commercial channel ITV broadcast interviews with women who said Savile abused them when they were as young as 12, sometimes on BBC premises.

Entwistle is due to appear before parliament on Tuesday to answer what are likely to be tough questions about the case.

The BBC has launched two inde-pendent reviews of the allegations,

one looking into Savile’s actions and another to investigate why the News-night report was shelved.

It has not commented officially on the case, saying it would be inappro-priate to say anything until the reviews had been concluded.

The Panorama programme, due to air in Britain on Monday night, is expected to give details of how much information the Newsnight team had on Savile at the time.

MILWAUKEE - A gun man opened fire at the suburban Milwau-kee beauty salon where his spouse worked on Sunday, killing three people and wounding four others before taking his own life, police said, two weeks after he was accused of slashing his wife’s car tires.

The suspect was identified as 45-year-old Radcliffe Haughton, a resident of Brown Deer, Wiscon-sin, who h ad been p laced under a restraining order and directed to

surrender his firearms to local au-thorities this month in connection with a domestic abuse case involv-ing his wife.

“We believe this incident was do-mestic violence-related,” Brookfield Police Chief Daniel Tushaus said at a news conference. All three of those shot to death at the Azana Salon & Spa were female, Tushaus said. Their ages and identities were not immedi-ately provided, and the police chief would not say whether Haughton’s wife, who was a spa employee, was among the victims.

Haughton was found dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound at the crime scene, police said. The shooting marked the sec-ond outburst of gun violence at a U.S. beauty spa in a matter of days. On Thursday, a gunman opened fire at a salon in suburban Orlando, Florida, killing three women and wounding a f ourth, his wife, bef ore fleeing and committing suicide at a nearby residence. The suspect in that shooting had likewise been ordered to keep away from his spouse.

South Korean police ban propaganda leaflet launch to North

Gianyar (Bali Post)—A number of people visiting the Lembeng Beach, Ketewel village,

Sukawati subdistrict, Gianyar on Sunday (Oct 21) were surprised by the discovery of a body floating in the waters on the beach. The victim was known as I Wayan Sujana, 45, a resident from Karangasem living at Griya Nugraha Housing, Benoa hamlet, South Kuta.

Information compiled at location mentioned that such incident occurred around 07:00 a.m. As testimony of I Wayan Siarka, the victim floating in the middle of the waters was first discovered by local village children who were bathing on Lembeng Beach. Then, they immediately called out for a help to foreign tourists who were about to sunbathe and swim on the beach.

Those tourists then pulled the floating man’s body to the edge of the beach as well as provided a help. Though those tourists attempted to give a help for several times, the body remained motionless. Instead, both ears of the victim bleed. The incident was then reported to police station.

A number of police officers immediately came down to location. Chief of Sukawati Police, I Made Witaya, said his party was still mak-ing identification related to the incident. Further, the victim’s body was taken to Sanjiwani Hospital to be temporarily commended while waiting for the coming of his family. Police Chief said his party had performed external autopsy in Sanjiwani Hospital. There were no signs of violence found on the victim’s body. The victim’s family had been contacted and it was informed that so far the victim had no history of illness that could harm while bathing on the beach, explained the Police Chief. (kmb16)

As monitoring on the shore of Lake Tamblingan in Banjar subdistrict on Sunday (Oct 21), most of the houses previously sub-merged had dried up. Nevertheless, a number of houses were already damaged, while some others were dismantled by their owner. Resi-dents whose house was far away from the overflowing lake water had now re-occupied their house. Conversely, residents whose house was close to the lake were forced to survive in the refuge tent.

A local resident, Luh Riami, told that since the lake receded she would like to re-occupy her house on the lakeside. However, she decided to stay in the refuge tent. She worried if her house would be submerged back as before. Moreover, the rainy season had been getting closer and it could trigger the overflowing lake water. In addition, she claimed not to have cost to renovate her house that

was damaged after being submerged by the lake water six months ago.

Similar experience was revealed by another resident, Luh Sariani. She claimed if she did not dare to occupy her house though the lake had considerably receded. She feared if the water would overflow again when it rained so that it could flood back her house as six months ago. While waiting for a better situation and collecting the cost to repair the house, she decided to stay in the refuge tent with her husband and children. Occasionally, he visited her house to clean up the courtyard. After that, she returned to her refuge tent in the forest. “As submerged for too long in water, the walls and timber turn decay. If occupied by force, we worry if an earthquake will happen this house can collapse. While seeing the situ-ation, I live in the tent for a better safety,” she said.

To be noted, since the lake water of Tamblingan overflowed, tens of household heads who worked as fishermen took refuge in the forest. Their house was submerged due

to the overflowing lake water was getting heavier. Until now, a total of 20 household heads returned to occupy their house as the lake water had receded since the dry season.

The huge crowd that had been gathering on the beach since mid morning witnessed an epic battle as Darmaputra Tonjo and Raditya Rondi traded blows in a 30 minute final, where Tonjo had nothing to lose and Rondi had the 2012 championship to try and win.

At the start of the day the pressure on Rondi was enormous, as he know he had to win first his quarterfinal heat, then his semifinal heat, and then the final, or two-time ISC champion and current number one ranked Lee Wilson would have the 2012 cham-pionship trophy and the big check for 100 million rupiah (almost $10,000 USD) in hand. But Rondi was clearly

up to the challenge, to the delight of his friends and fans on the beach that chaired him up to the podium.

When asked the significance of his dual win today, he replied, “This is the biggest thing that has happened in my life for sure. It’s the biggest win, the biggest prize money, the biggest crowd, the biggest everything. This is the biggest highlight of my life! “

And how did it feel out there in the final? “In the last two minutes out there I was so nervous. SINGAPORE - When Tastyfood Industries decided to boost produc-tion to meet demand in Africa and the Middle East, the maker of Mr Cafe instant coffee and Vitamax cereal did not expand its Singapore factory or another one it owns in Xiamen, China.

Instead, it plans to close its Sin-gapore plant next year and move up the road to Malaysia’s Iskandar economic zone, where it will set up a factory three times the size on low-cost freehold land and hire willing workers as cheaply as it can in China.

“New generation Singaporeans do not like production positions as they are more educated now,” Tastyfood founder and managing director Joseph Lim, a Singaporean, told Reuters.

“It’s not easy to manage a manu-facturing company in Singapore

unless you are in high-tech, high value-added businesses like phar-maceuticals.”

Singapore companies dominate the firms setting up factories in Iskandar, accounting for around 15 percent of the 32.7 billion ringgit ($10.7 billion) committed as of June, according to the Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA).

Firms from Spain, Japan, the Netherlands and Germany are other large manufacturers in the zone in Malaysia’s southern state of Johor, while companies from the United Arab Emirates are involved in hous-ing and other property projects.

Lim, who will keep Tastyfood’s marketing and product development operations in Singapore, said an av-erage factory worker in Malaysia and China earns S$400-500 ($330-410) per month, less than half the wage in the wealthy city-state.

Proximity is also key. The new Iskandar factory is just a 30-minute

drive from Tastyfood’s home base and major market, he said, against the four-hour flight from Xiamen.

“Doing business in China also car-ries a lot of risks, although things have been improving there,” Lim said.

Singapore manufacturers are not the only ones heading to Iskandar.

Theme park Legoland and Brit-ain’s Marlborough College chose Is-kandar for their first forays into Asia. U.S.-based Simon Property Group Inc set up its first Premium Outlets shopping centre in Southeast Asia there through a joint venture with Malaysia’s Genting Group, eyeing Singapore’s affluent customers.

Polls show Obama with an ad-vantage in voter perceptions about which candidate would do best in foreign affairs, but Romney is expected to use the head-to-head meeting in Boca Raton, Florida, to whittle away the president’s edge. He has been hitting Obama hard on the administration’s uncertain explanations about what happened in last month’s attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya. Militants killed four Americans, including U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens.

Iran-Israel tensions, China, terrorism and the war in Afghani-stan were all subjects expected to come up in the 90-minute debate moderated by CBS News’ Bob Schieffer.

Against the background of the debate, 41 of the 50 U.S. states are essentially already decided, and the candidates now are fighting to win in the remaining nine battleground states, including critical Ohio and Florida.

The battleground states assume outsized importance because the

presidency is decided in state-by-state contests, not by a national popular vote. The system can, as it did in former Vice President Al Gore’s defeat in 2000, lead to a candidate winning the popular vote but losing the presidency. George W. Bush eked out a victory in the electoral college after the U.S. Su-preme Court stopped the recount in Florida.

A new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll released Sunday showed Obama and Romney tied, with both candidates backed by 47 percent of likely voters nationwide.

The poll was conducted entirely in the aftermath of the second presi-dential debate last Tuesday that Obama was perceived as winning following a poor performance in the first debate on Oct. 3. In the last such poll before the presidential debates began, the president held a narrow, three-point lead over Rom-ney, 49 percent to 46 percent.

But among the wider pool of all registered voters in the latest survey, Obama is ahead of Rom-ney by five points, 49 percent to

44 percent.Looking at some of the most im-

portant demographic groups, Rom-ney leads among men (53 percent to 43 percent), Obama is up with women (51 percent to 43 percent) and they are essentially tied among voters in the Midwest.

With early and absentee voting already under way in many swing states, including Ohio, North Caro-lina and Iowa, the tight poll results indicate that the race could be de-cided by which campaign is better able to lock in supporters and get them to the polls.

Monday’s debate represents the candidates’ last chance to directly confront one another before an audience of millions of Americans watching the televised face-off.

Obama spent the weekend with top aides preparing for the debate at Camp David, the presidential retreat in Maryland’s Catoctin mountains. Romney did his pre-debate work in Florida, continuing intensive preparations that have consumed large amounts of his time in recent weeks.

JERUSALEM — The Israeli military says its largest ever exercise with the United States has begun.

A major air defense drill called Austere Challenge 2012 started Sun-day and includes more than 3,500 Americans and 1,000 Israelis. The militaries are practicing their ability to work together against a range of threats facing Israel, the main U.S. ally in the Mideast.

The military exercise was originally scheduled for April but was postponed at Israel’s request. No reason was given but it came amid growing talk of Israel preparing to attack Iran if Tehran does not cease its uranium enrichment program.

The weeks-long joint exercise will test multiple Israeli and American air defense systems against incoming missiles and rockets from places as far away as Iran.

The governor of Yogyakarta, Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X meanwhile said micro-busi-nesses have played a strategic role in the national economic development.

The traffic police chief of Poso Police precinct, Adjunct Commis-sioner Abidin has confirmed about the homemade bomb explosion which occurred at 6.15 a.m. Central Indonesia Standard Time (WITA).

The local traffic police and one of bank BRI security men who suffered injuries were identified as Brigadier-I Rusliadi and Akbar respectively.

According to Adjunct Commis-sioner Abidin, Brigadier-I Rusliadi injured his hand due to the explo-sive fragments, while Akbar slightly wounded.

Someone has allegedly put the homemade bomb during a police personnel rollcall at the police pre-cinct office,” Abidin cited.

“The culprit seemingly knows well the situation when the police checkpoint is being vacant,” Abidin explained.

They will be proud of doing something for their environment,” he said.

Further, he said that to prevent the entry of plastic rubbish to mangrove forest, the rubbish coming from the estuaries and floodgates of Badung River and others had to be filtered by setting up multiple-stage filtration. For example, the first fil-tering used quite large-holed net, and the next net had smaller holes up to the smallest holes so that no more rubbish flowing to the mangrove area. “If such method is applied, the rubbish collectors or scavengers will gather in the area of filtering to take the plastic bottles. LOS ANGELES - Dwight Howard saw his first action in a Los Angeles Lakers jersey Sunday, flashing signs of potential dominance to come during a pre-season loss to the Sacramento Kings.

GENEVA - Team captains playing in Champions and Europa League matches this week will be asked to wear anti-racism armbands as part of a campaign against discrimination, European soccer’s governing body UEFA said on Monday. UEFA said it was backing a campaign by FARE, a Europe-wide group aiming to rid soccer of racism, in asking captains to wear the armbands featuring the words “Unite against racism”.

Frequently criticised for not doing enough to stamp out racism, UEFA said 30-second video messages would be played on stadium screens before games, and teams would be accompanied by children wearing “Unite against Racism” t-shirts.

“UEFA is committed to tackling discrimination in football and we en-courage football fans to join us in our efforts to value respect for players, officials, opponents and fellow supporters of all nationalities, religious backgrounds, sexual orientation and ethnic origins,” said UEFA President Michel Platini in a statement.

“For over 10 years we have worked alongside the FARE network and will continue to strive towards unity in football.” A UEFA statement added: “Forty matches across UEFA’s prestigious club competitions will reinstate UEFA’s commitment to ensuring that European football is free of racism, intolerance and xenophobia through a series of activities which will be witnessed by thousands of fans in the stadiums and millions more on television.”

Critics have said racism will only stop if UEFA deducts points from teams or kicks them out of competitions altogether. UEFA last week fined Lazio 40,000 euros ($52,400) for racist behaviour by their fans during a Europa League match at Tottenham Hotspur.

INJURY WORRIES

Midfielder Kris Commons has a hamstring prob-lem, while Lennon said forward Lassad, who knows Barca well from his stint at Deportivo, was “a major doubt” with a groin strain.

GENEVA - Team captains playing in Champions and Europa League matches this week will be asked to wear anti-racism armbands as part of a campaign against discrimination, European soccer’s governing body UEFA said on Monday. UEFA said it was backing a campaign by FARE, a Europe-wide group aiming to rid soccer of racism, in asking captains to wear the armbands featuring the words “Unite against racism”.

Frequently criticised for not doing enough to stamp out racism, UEFA said 30-second video messages would be played on stadium screens before games, and teams would be accompanied by children wearing “Unite against Racism” t-shirts.

“UEFA is committed to tackling discrimination in football and we en-courage football fans to join us in our efforts to value respect for players, officials, opponents and fellow supporters of all nationalities, religious backgrounds, sexual orientation and ethnic origins,” said UEFA President Michel Platini in a statement.

“For over 10 years we have worked alongside the FARE network and will continue to strive towards unity in football.” A UEFA statement added: “Forty matches across UEFA’s prestigious club competitions will reinstate UEFA’s commitment to ensuring that European football is free of racism, intolerance and xenophobia through a series of activities which will be witnessed by thousands of fans in the stadiums and millions more on television.”

Critics have said racism will only stop if UEFA deducts points from teams or kicks them out of competitions altogether. UEFA last week fined Lazio 40,000 euros ($52,400) for racist behaviour by their fans during a Europa League match at Tottenham Hotspur.

The UEFA initiative comes as England have lodged a complained that their under-21 players were racially abused at a European championship playoff match in Serbia. UEFA has opened proceedings against both teams.

LOS ANGELES - Dwight Howard saw his first action in a Los Angeles Lakers jersey Sunday, flashing signs of potential dominance to come during a pre-season loss to the Sacramento Kings.

Howard, who the Lakers acquired from Orlando in a blockbuster off-season trade, registered 19 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks in his first court time since he underwent back surgery in April.

Polls show Obama with an ad-vantage in voter perceptions about which candidate would do best in foreign affairs, but Romney is expected to use the head-to-head meeting in Boca Raton, Florida, to whittle away the president’s edge. He has been hitting Obama hard on the administration’s uncertain explanations about what happened in last month’s attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya. Militants killed four Americans, including U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens.

Iran-Israel tensions, China, terrorism and the war in Afghani-stan were all subjects expected to come up in the 90-minute debate moderated by CBS News’ Bob Schieffer.

Against the background of the debate, 41 of the 50 U.S. states are essentially already decided, and the candidates now are fighting to win in the remaining nine battleground states, including critical Ohio and Florida.

The battleground states assume outsized importance because the

presidency is decided in state-by-state contests, not by a national popular vote. The system can, as it did in former Vice President Al Gore’s defeat in 2000, lead to a candidate winning the popular vote but losing the presidency. George W. Bush eked out a victory in the electoral college after the U.S. Su-preme Court stopped the recount in Florida.

A new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll released Sunday showed Obama and Romney tied, with both candidates backed by 47 percent of likely voters nationwide.

The poll was conducted entirely in the aftermath of the second presi-dential debate last Tuesday that Obama was perceived as winning following a poor performance in the first debate on Oct. 3. In the last such poll before the presidential debates began, the president held a narrow, three-point lead over Rom-ney, 49 percent to 46 percent.

But among the wider pool of all registered voters in the latest survey, Obama is ahead of Rom-ney by five points, 49 percent to

44 percent.Looking at some of the most im-

portant demographic groups, Rom-ney leads among men (53 percent to 43 percent), Obama is up with women (51 percent to 43 percent) and they are essentially tied among voters in the Midwest.

With early and absentee voting already under way in many swing states, including Ohio, North Caro-lina and Iowa, the tight poll results indicate that the race could be de-cided by which campaign is better able to lock in supporters and get them to the polls.

Monday’s debate represents the candidates’ last chance to directly confront one another before an audience of millions of Americans watching the televised face-off.

Obama spent the weekend with top aides preparing for the debate at Camp David, the presidential retreat in Maryland’s Catoctin mountains. Romney did his pre-debate work in Florida, continuing intensive preparations that have consumed large amounts of his time in recent weeks.

JERUSALEM — The Israeli military says its largest ever exercise with the United States has begun.

A major air defense drill called Austere Challenge 2012 started Sun-day and includes more than 3,500 Americans and 1,000 Israelis. The militaries are practicing their ability to work together against a range of threats facing Israel, the main U.S. ally in the Mideast.

The military exercise was originally scheduled for April but was postponed at Israel’s request. No reason was given but it came amid growing talk of Israel preparing to attack Iran if Tehran does not cease its uranium enrichment program.

The weeks-long joint exercise will test multiple Israeli and American air defense systems against incoming missiles and rockets from places as far away as Iran.

YOGYAKARTA - President Susi lo Bambang Yudhoyono boasted the credit scheme for small and medium businesses (KUR) he launched in 2007 had been able to empower more than seven million small, micro- and medium businesses.

He said total credits that had been distributed since 2007 had reached Rp87 trillion.

The traffic police chief of Poso Police precinct, Adjunct Commis-sioner Abidin has confirmed about the homemade bomb explosion which occurred at 6.15 a.m. Central Indonesia Standard Time (WITA).

The local traffic police and one of bank BRI security men who suffered injuries were identified as Brigadier-I Rusliadi and Akbar respectively.

According to Adjunct Commis-sioner Abidin, Brigadier-I Rusliadi injured his hand due to the explo-sive fragments, while Akbar slightly wounded.

“The culprit seemingly knows well the situation when the police checkpoint is being vacant,” Abidin explained.

CSR funds of private institutions, companies or state-owned enterprises may also be directed to the maintenance and preservation of the man-grove forest. They will be proud of doing something for their environment,” he said.

Further, he said that to prevent the entry of plastic rubbish to mangrove forest, the rubbish coming from the estuaries and floodgates of Badung River and others had to be filtered by setting up multiple-stage filtration. For example, the first fil-tering used quite large-holed net, and the next net had smaller holes up to the smallest holes so that no more rubbish flowing to the mangrove area. “If such method is applied, the rubbish collectors or scavengers will gather in the area of filtering to take the plastic bottles. The huge crowd that had been gathering on the beach since mid morning witnessed an epic battle as Darmaputra Tonjo and Raditya Rondi traded blows in a 30 minute final, where Tonjo had nothing to lose and Rondi had the 2012 championship to try and win.

At the start of the day the pressure on Rondi was enormous, as he know he had to win first his quarterfinal heat, then his semifinal heat, and then the final, or two-time ISC champion and current number one ranked Lee Wilson would have the 2012 cham-pionship trophy and the big check for 100 million rupiah (almost $10,000 USD) in hand. SINGAPORE - When Tastyfood Industries decided to boost produc-tion to meet demand in Africa and the Middle East, the maker of Mr Cafe instant coffee and Vitamax cereal did not expand its Singapore factory or another one it owns in Xiamen, China.

Instead, it plans to close its Sin-gapore plant next year and move up the road to Malaysia’s Iskandar economic zone, where it will set up a factory three times the size on low-cost freehold land and hire willing workers as cheaply as it can in China.

“New generation Singaporeans do not like production positions as they are more educated now,” Tastyfood founder and managing director Joseph Lim, a Singaporean, told Reuters.

“It’s not easy to manage a manu-facturing company in Singapore

unless you are in high-tech, high value-added businesses like phar-maceuticals.”

Singapore companies dominate the firms setting up factories in Iskandar, accounting for around 15 percent of the 32.7 billion ringgit ($10.7 billion) committed as of June, according to the Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA).

Firms from Spain, Japan, the Netherlands and Germany are other large manufacturers in the zone in Malaysia’s southern state of Johor, while companies from the United Arab Emirates are involved in hous-ing and other property projects.

Lim, who will keep Tastyfood’s marketing and product development operations in Singapore, said an av-erage factory worker in Malaysia and China earns S$400-500 ($330-410) per month, less than half the wage in the wealthy city-state.

Proximity is also key. The new Iskandar factory is just a 30-minute

drive from Tastyfood’s home base and major market, he said, against the four-hour flight from Xiamen.

“Doing business in China also car-ries a lot of risks, although things have been improving there,” Lim said.

Singapore manufacturers are not the only ones heading to Iskandar.

Theme park Legoland and Brit-ain’s Marlborough College chose Is-kandar for their first forays into Asia. U.S.-based Simon Property Group Inc set up its first Premium Outlets shopping centre in Southeast Asia there through a joint venture with Malaysia’s Genting Group, eyeing Singapore’s affluent customers.

Furthermore, the Ba-dung Regency with the House should prepare a bylaw draft on the termina-tion of hotel permit issuance so that it will have a legal force,” he said.

The Badung House, said Satria, would be ready to escort the morato-rium on the hotel permit. Moreover, the number of hotel rooms in Badung was considered to have been overloaded. He added if the quality of the Badung tour-ism declined, the impact would be felt primarily on the welfare of labor force and quality of tourism human resources. Its new head, George Entwistle, is now under pressure to explain why the BBC dropped an investigation by its Newsnight programme into Savile last year. Mark Thompson, now the New

York Times Co’s chief executive, was in charge of the BBC at the time.

In a programme due to be aired in Britain later on Monday, a Newsnight producer behind the investigation, Meirion Jones, said he had warned his editor that the BBC was at risk of being accused of a cover-up if it did not run the story, the BBC said.

“I was sure the story would come out one way or another and...the BBC

would be accused of a cover-up,” he was quoted as saying by the BBC.

Knighted as a “Sir” by Queen Elizabeth, cigar-chomping Savile was one of the BBC’s biggest names and most recognised televi-sion personalities, and questions have been raised about whether the broadcaster turned a blind eye to his activities.

by Savile opened a criminal inquiry last week, saying more than 200 potential victims had come forward since an investigation by another Brit-ish TV channel claimed he had preyed on children for decades.

Entwistle is due to appear before parliament on Tuesday to answer what are likely to be tough questions about the case.

The BBC has launched two inde-pendent reviews of the allegations,

one looking into Savile’s actions and another to investigate why the News-night report was shelved.

It has not commented officially on the case, saying it would be inappro-priate to say anything until the reviews had been concluded.

The Panorama programme, due to air in Britain on Monday night, is expected to give details of how much information the Newsnight team had on Savile at the time.

MILWAUKEE - A gun man opened fire at the suburban Milwau-kee beauty salon where his spouse worked on Sunday, killing three people and wounding four others before taking his own life, police said, two weeks after he was accused of slashing his wife’s car tires.

The suspect was identified as 45-year-old Radcliffe Haughton, a resident of Brown Deer, Wiscon-sin, who h ad been p laced under a restraining order and directed to

surrender his firearms to local au-thorities this month in connection with a domestic abuse case involv-ing his wife.

“We believe this incident was do-mestic violence-related,” Brookfield Police Chief Daniel Tushaus said at a news conference. All three of those shot to death at the Azana Salon & Spa were female, Tushaus said. Their ages and identities were not immedi-ately provided, and the police chief would not say whether Haughton’s wife, who was a spa employee, was among the victims.

Haughton was found dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound at the crime scene, police said. The shooting marked the sec-ond outburst of gun violence at a U.S. beauty spa in a matter of days. On Thursday, a gunman opened fire at a salon in suburban Orlando, Florida, killing three women and wounding a f ourth, his wife, bef ore fleeing and committing suicide at a nearby residence. The suspect in that shooting had likewise been ordered to keep away from his spouse.

South Korean police ban propaganda leaflet launch to North

Gianyar (Bali Post)—A number of people visiting the Lembeng Beach, Ketewel village,

Sukawati subdistrict, Gianyar on Sunday (Oct 21) were surprised by the discovery of a body floating in the waters on the beach. The victim was known as I Wayan Sujana, 45, a resident from Karangasem living at Griya Nugraha Housing, Benoa hamlet, South Kuta.

Information compiled at location mentioned that such incident occurred around 07:00 a.m. As testimony of I Wayan Siarka, the victim floating in the middle of the waters was first discovered by local village children who were bathing on Lembeng Beach. Then, they immediately called out for a help to foreign tourists who were about to sunbathe and swim on the beach.

Those tourists then pulled the floating man’s body to the edge of the beach as well as provided a help. Though those tourists attempted to give a help for several times, the body remained motionless. Instead, both ears of the victim bleed. The incident was then reported to police station.

A number of police officers immediately came down to location. Chief of Sukawati Police, I Made Witaya, said his party was still mak-ing identification related to the incident. Further, the victim’s body was taken to Sanjiwani Hospital to be temporarily commended while waiting for the coming of his family. Police Chief said his party had performed external autopsy in Sanjiwani Hospital. There were no signs of violence found on the victim’s body. The victim’s family had been contacted and it was informed that so far the victim had no history of illness that could harm while bathing on the beach, explained the Police Chief. (kmb16)

As monitoring on the shore of Lake Tamblingan in Banjar subdistrict on Sunday (Oct 21), most of the houses previously sub-merged had dried up. Nevertheless, a number of houses were already damaged, while some others were dismantled by their owner. Resi-dents whose house was far away from the overflowing lake water had now re-occupied their house. Conversely, residents whose house was close to the lake were forced to survive in the refuge tent.

A local resident, Luh Riami, told that since the lake receded she would like to re-occupy her house on the lakeside. However, she decided to stay in the refuge tent. She worried if her house would be submerged back as before. Moreover, the rainy season had been getting closer and it could trigger the overflowing lake water. In addition, she claimed not to have cost to renovate her house that

was damaged after being submerged by the lake water six months ago.

Similar experience was revealed by another resident, Luh Sariani. She claimed if she did not dare to occupy her house though the lake had considerably receded. She feared if the water would overflow again when it rained so that it could flood back her house as six months ago. While waiting for a better situation and collecting the cost to repair the house, she decided to stay in the refuge tent with her husband and children. Occasionally, he visited her house to clean up the courtyard. After that, she returned to her refuge tent in the forest. “As submerged for too long in water, the walls and timber turn decay. If occupied by force, we worry if an earthquake will happen this house can collapse. While seeing the situ-ation, I live in the tent for a better safety,” she said.

To be noted, since the lake water of Tamblingan overflowed, tens of household heads who worked as fishermen took refuge in the forest. Their house was submerged due

to the overflowing lake water was getting heavier. Until now, a total of 20 household heads returned to occupy their house as the lake water had receded since the dry season.

Meanwhile, other eight families remained to refuge in the tent. They did not dare to re-occupy their house for fear of being submerged again. (kmb)

Adequately interesting ac-tivity on the series of Galun-gan feast day lies on the Pe-nampahan day, the day before Galungan. On that day, there are two unique activities that have become a tradition from generation to generation of the Hindu community in Bali.

The activities are mepatung and mebat. Both activities pose a reflection of sense of togetherness, mutual assistance and the familial relationship. Mepatung tradition is slaugh-tering pig activity where the flesh is then divided based on consultation and agreement of the group. This activity is adjusted to the affordability of group members. In other words, the group member is tailored to the size of pig that will be slaughtered.

If the pig is big enough, then the number of groups will be more. On the contrary, if the pig is small, then the number of group will be reduced. So the portion of pork obtained will be not too little. Each group mem-ber will get the same amount of pork, both types of meat as well as its weight. Each group member will get one portion. Meanwhile, a member who cannot afford it, he will divide again his portion with other

member, so that he will get a half of the portion. The price will be adjusted to the prevail-ing market price.

Determination of the group member is usually done long before the arrival of Galungan. The idea can arise from the pig owner who will offer his pig to be slaughtered together, while another can also emerge from a person gathering his friends to be invited to join the activity. After obtaining an adequate number of group members, they later find out a pig pursuant to the number of group members.

Recently, a change occurred due to cultural influence, where the tradition of mepatung be-gan to erode in keeping with the progress of time. Because of busyness, people sometimes do not have time to join in the procession. To get pork, they prefer to purchase in the mar-ket or in slaughter house. It is usually carried out by the urban community that has busyness.

According to Jero Mangku Ketut Arthana from Tengah hamlet, Marga, Tabanan, the mepatung tradition was car-ried out because each oblation should be filled with processed meat, namely meat that had been finely mixed with sea-

soning such as pepes, satay, sausage and timbungan. Such processed meat was presented to god. The place of its pre-sentation was adapted to local tradition. “There are people presenting it in guardian shrine or penunggun karang,” said Jero Mangku Sekalan from Marga.

Nine people died and nearly 300 were injured when an unusually shallow magnitude-5.1 quake hit the town of Lorca on May 11, 2011. It was the country’s worst quake in more than 50 years, causing mil-lions of euros in damage to a region with an already fragile economy.

Using satellite images, scientists from Canada, Italy and Spain found the quake ruptured a fault running near a basin that had been weakened by 50 years of groundwater extrac-tion in the area.

During this period, the water table dropped by 250 meters (274 yards) as farmers bored ever deeper wells to help produce the fruit, veg-etables and meat that are exported from Lorca to the rest of Europe. In other words, the industry that propped up the local economy in southern Spain may have under-mined the very ground on which

Lorca is built.The researchers noted that even

without the strain caused by water extraction, a quake would likely have occurred at some point. But the extra stress of pumping vast amounts of water from a nearby aquifer may have been enough to trigger a quake at that particular time and place, said lead researcher Pablo J. Gonzalez of the University of Western Ontario, Canada.

Miguel de las Doblas Lavigne, a geologist with Spain’s National Natural Science Museum who has worked on the same theory but was not involved in the study, said the Lorca quake was in the cards.

“This has been going on for years in the Mediterranean areas, all very famous for their agricul-ture and plastic greenhouses. They are just sucking all the water out of the aquifers, drying them out,”

he told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. “From Lorca to (the regional capital of) Murcia you can find a very depleted water level.” De las Doblas said it was “no coincidence that all the aftershocks were located on the exact position of maximum depletion.”

“The reason is clearly related to the farming, it’s like a sponge you drain the water from; the weight of the rocks makes the terrain subside and any small variation near a very active fault like the Alhama de Murcia may be the straw that breaks the camel*s back, which is what happened,” he said. He said excess water extraction was com-mon in Spain.

“Everybody digs their own well, they don’t care about any-thing,” he said. “I think in Lorca you may find that some 80 percent of wells are illegal.”

There are no longer summer camps geared toward children with cystic fibrosis. Though the genetic disease is not contagious, doctors found that children who attended the camps put each other at risk, spreading potentially deadly infections among their vulnerable lungs.

With the lessons of those camps in mind, schools now take special care to separate children with cystic fibrosis. But the administrators of a California middle school have taken these precautions one step further, ordering a boy to transfer schools not because he suffers from cystic fibrosis but because he has genetic markers associated with the disease, a decision that seems to conflict with medical understanding of the condition.

Colman Chadam, 11, was asked to leave Jordan Middle School in Palo Alto, because it was thought he might pose a risk to another student at the school who did suffer from the incurable condition, according to news reports. His parents are contesting the school’s decision in court, claiming that because their son does not actually have the disease he does not need to be

separated from children who do. Colman’s parents notified Jor-

dan Middle School on a medical disclosure form that a test done 11 years ago showed their son had genetic markers for cystic fibrosis, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Cystic fibrosis is caused by de-fects in a gene that helps regulate mucus production throughout the body. These mutations can cause thick mucus to build up in the lungs, leading to breathing problems and life-threatening infections.

Defects in the gene associated with cystic fibrosis are relatively common, with about 1 in 29 Cau-casian Americans carrying the mutation, according to the National Institutes of Health. But because the cystic fibrosis gene is recessive, children have to inherit two defec-tive copies, one from each parent, in order to have the condition.

Laurie Fink, a spokeswoman for the Cystic Fibrosis Founda-tion, a nonprofit organization that funds research on curing the disease, said it is possible, how-ever, for someone to carry two defective genes without showing signs of the condition.

SEATTLE - There was once a time when the launch of a new Windows operating system was a huge deal for the technology de-partments in many businesses. Not anymore. Microsoft Corp’s release of Windows 8 on Friday is likely to be a non-event for most companies -- and some experts say many may never adopt it.

The system may appear to offer something for everyone: touch-screen functionality for tablet enthusiasts, a slick new interface for the younger set, and multiple versions to make it compatible with traditional desktop PC software.

Many businesses, though, say there is no compelling reason to adopt. Indeed, a large number have yet to make the transition to Win-dows 7 from Windows XP.

“Windows 8 is, frankly, more of a consumer platform than it is a business platform, so it’s not something that makes any sense from a business perspective at this juncture,” said Doug Johnson, head of risk management policy at the American Bankers Association, whose members are among the world’s biggest technology buyers. “There is really no additional busi-

ness functionality that Windows 8 gives you that I see.”

For most of the past two decades, that sort of comment about a new version of Windows might have set off panic in Microsoft’s Redmond, Washington, headquarters. Not now. Windows 8, in a stark reflec-tion of how the technology business is changing, will rise or fall on how it is received in the consumer market.

That doesn’t mean Microsoft executives are publicly saying they won’t be going after enterprise cus-tomers with the radical new version of its flagship product.

“The lines between the consumer and the enterprise are blurring,” said Ron Markezich, head of Microsoft’s Enterprise & Partner Group. “Busi-ness customers are looking forward to Windows 8 because they don’t have to compromise between tablet and PC.”

But Microsoft’s main goal is to show it can master the new touch-optimized, mobile forms of computing pioneered by Apple Inc and Google Inc. Its colorful, action-packed advertising for the system are aimed at a young, free-wheeling audience, and its new Surface tab-lets are being positioned squarely as consumer devices.

EvEry Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Denpasar (Bali Post)—Hitherto, a total of 20 additional rub-

bish trucks to reinforce the existing fleet of the Denpasar Sanitation and Landscap-ing Department (DKP) have not arrived. As planned, the fleet should have arrived early October 2012 to be further operated. Apparently, the delay occurred because the tender winner of the 20-truck procurement, PT Citra Daya Kreasi, was still arranging the administrative processes for the truck delivery. The Head of Denpasar Sanitation and Landscaping Agency, Ketut Wisada, told Bali Post on Sunday (Oct 21).

Wisada did not dismiss if arrival of the 20 trucks faced slight delay because the partner was still arranging the admin-istrative process. After coordinating it, he expected the entire fleet used to transport rubbish would have arrived in Denpasar late October. “Yes, we expect that ev-erything is clear at the end of October,” he said.

Considering the number of rubbish trucks was not optimal, Wisada asked the understanding of city dwellers of Denpasar if the service provided was less optimal. For certain areas, he said, the rubbish transport did not run smoothly. “After the coming and operation of the additional fleet, we make sure the problem of rubbish transport will be resolved,” he said.

On the other hand, the delay of the 20 new trucks just had an impact on the process of transporting the rubbish at some points. It happened because not all of the 32 existing trucks could be operated opti-mally become some units were damaged. As a result, the rubbish at some places should be transported till midday as at

Padangsambian, West Denpasar. One of the residents, Diah, complained

about the trucks because it remained to op-erate up to 09:00 a.m. Aside from causing the delays in transportation, the presence of rubbish trucks until noon often triggered traffic congestion, too.

Responding to the complaint, Wisada asked the resident to be patient and under-stand it. Due to restricted fleet, he said, his party was forced to implement a transport system divided into three rings, namely the ring one, two and three. Ring one covered the main roads, ring two covered the roads on the outskirts of the city and ring three included rural areas. “Due to restricted fleet, we prioritize the cleanup at the ring one. Having accomplished the ring one, it is resumed to ring two and three. Since all the trucks have to commute to the landfill, the handling of rubbish transportation lasts until approaching the noon,” he explained.

With the addition of new fleet, Wisada hoped the rubbish problem in the city of Denpasar could be overcome. For the pro-curement of new trucks, the partner was said to still have time limit until December 2012. PT Citra Daya Kreasi had won the tender as proposing the lowest bid worth IDR 6.047 billion from the top limit of IDR 6.8 billion.

As reported previously, Wisada said that Denpasar area ideally had 90 rubbish trucks to be operated. Meanwhile, the existing fleet was very far from such ideal number. Moreover, the existing 32 units of trucks had averagely seven years old and been out of order. Therefore, his party was going to propose new replacement and addition of fleet. (kmb13)

For decades, Balinese people have attempted to preserve the mangrove forest, why is it so easy to give it to investors?” he asked.

Reaction of disap-pointment came from leaderships of the Bali House and various societal components because the Governor of Bali was assessed to ignore the people’s aspirations and acted arrogantly.

Chopra, who turned 80 last month, was one of India’s iconic film-makers and was known as the “king of ro-mance”. He also owned one of the industry’s biggest produc-tion houses and studios, Yash Raj Films, which recently ventured into Hollywood movie production as well.

Chopra’s career spanned

five decades and his last film as director, “Jab Tak Hai Jaan,” Til There is Life, opens in cinemas on November 13, on the Indian festival of Diwali.

On his birthday in Sep-tember, he had announced he wouldn’t direct any more films. Chopra was diagnosed with dengue fever last week

and had been treated at a Mumbai hospital.

Tributes poured in from fans and the film industry as people thronged to pay their respects at the offices of Yash Raj Films in suburban Mumbai.

“My mind is filled with hundreds of private and per-sonal moments that we all

spent together during this large association with him,” actor Amitabh Bachchan, who worked on several films with Chopra, wrote in a blog post.

Born in 1932 in Lahore, now in Pakistan, Chopra was favored by leading Indian ac-tors, with his movies seen as a sure-fire way to become a hit with audiences.

“They shall ever remain stored within us and like all other memories shall give value and belief to what we shared together,” Bachchan added.

The Kennedy Center is awarding DeGeneres the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor on Monday night. The show will be broadcast Oct. 30 on PBS stations.

DeGeneres began her career as a comedy club emcee in her native New Orleans. Soon after, she became the first female comedian summoned to late-night host Johnny Carson’s desk to chat.

The prize honors Mark Twain’s tradition of satire and social com-mentary. Past winners include Bill Cosby, Tina Fey, Will Ferrell and Steve Martin.
