Though the film lost out to Disney’s mighty “Frozen” at the Academy Awards, children and adults will be thrilled by this meek underdog, which is being released both in its original French and an English redubbing voiced by Forest Whitaker, Lauren Bacall, Paul Giamatti and child actress Mackenzie Foy. (This review is of the French original, which holds the charm of hearing little children mice speaking timidly in French. Be warned: The cuteness is almost unbearable.)

An orphanage of mice has gathered around Celestine (voiced by Pauline

Brunner, the daughter of “Triplets of Belleville” producer Didier Brunner, also a producer here), a bright young mouse who — despite the stern warnings of their frightful headmaster (Anne-Marie Loop) that such ideas are dangerous — imagines a bear and mouse as pals.

In the world of “Ernest & Celestine,” this is tantamount to heresy. The mice live below ground and the bears above — the car-driving, shop-keeping human equivalents in this universe. Their lone interaction is when a bear cub loses a tooth, which the “fairy mouse” replaces

with a coin. (This, it turns out, is a mutu-ally beneficial deal, since mice dentists depend on bear teeth to fashion tooth replacements.)

It’s when Celestine is on such a fairy mouse mission that she’s discovered by a shrieking family and thrown out of the house and into the trash. The next day, she’s unwittingly rescued by Ernest, a grumpy and woefully unsuccessful street-musician clad in a ragged old overcoat and hat. (When police confiscate his one-man-band instruments, Ernest eats the ticket.)

Desperate for food, he initially tries to swallow Celestine, too, as he rummages through garbage cans. Though greatly outsized, she cheerfully extends her paw and introduces herself. The plucky Ce-lestine then slaps him across the nose and chastises, “Do you think a little mouse like me will fill you up?”

But after Celestine leads him to sweets, they start up an unlikely friend-ship and, later, become wanted burglars on the lam. Celestine is sought by mice

police (for Celestine’s af-filiation with a bear), while Ernest is pursued by bear police (for his food steal-ing and, to help Celestine, tooth thievery). Even holed up in his country cabin, they don’t immediately hit it off, as Ernest still turns his nose up at living with an inferior mouse.

It’s a little story, told economically and with graceful minimalism. Sound effects have the simplicity of a Richard Bresson film. The music by jazz cellist Vincent Courtois is a sweetly mel-ancholy companion to the fairy tale, which despite its cuteness, has a rascally French sense of humor, too.

WELLINGTON, New Zealand — Hollywood actor Chris Pine, known for playing Captain Kirk in the “Star Trek” movies, has been charged with drunken driving in New Zealand. The 33-year-old American is due to make his first court appearance in the case on Monday, court officials said Wednesday.

New Zealand Police said in a statement that a 33-year-old American was charged March 1 with driving with a blood-alcohol

level over the legal limit, which in New Zealand is .08 percent. Police did not name the man, but said he was stopped during a routine early-morning check near the South Island town of Methven. Pine’s agent and publicist could not be reached immediately Wednesday for comment.

Pine has been in New Zealand film-ing the movie “Z for Zachariah,” which is due for release next year. Much of the filming has taken place on the South Island’s picturesque Banks Peninsula.

Casey Crawford, manager of the Blue

Pub, a Methven bar, told Christchurch newspaper The Press that Pine was attend-ing a celebration at the bar on the night of Feb. 28 to mark the end of filming and was accompanied by his Icelandic girlfriend, Iris Bjork Johannesdottir.

Pine was drinking beer and did not appear intoxicated before leaving at about 2:30 a.m., Crawford said, adding that Pine had obliged locals who wanted their photo taken with him. “He looked like he just wanted to spend time with his partner,” Crawford told the newspaper.

‘Ernest & Celestine’ a delicate delightAssociated Press Writer

The delicate and lovingly hand-made “Ernest & Celestine” captures the whimsy and warmth of a dearly felt children’s picture book like few movies before. The Oscar-nominated animated French-Belgian film is a simply rendered tale about a friendship between a mouse and a bear, painted with watercolor backgrounds and hand-sketched characters. In a movie landscape crowded with awesome digital animations and forgettable big-budget cartoon blockbusters, “Ernest & Celestine” is a humble oasis of gentle and inventive storytelling.

EvEry Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Bali PostDENPASAR - A theft action

occurred in front of the Satria Bird Market on Jalan Veteran, Denpasar, Tuesday morning (Mar 11). A customer of Bank BRI, I Wayan Hartana, a resident of Tau-man hamlet, Sembung village, Mengwi, Badung, was burglarized with the loss of IDR 300 million. Such hundreds of millions were taken by criminals when the victim stopped at the scene.

“The case has been reported to the integrated police service (SPKT) of Bali Police,” said a source in the police station. The source explained the victim had just withdrawn money as much as IDR 300 million in the BRI Branch on Jalan Gajah Mada, Denpasar. By his Innova vehicle, he turned to go. Once arriving at scene, the victim got a call and then took his vehicle aside and parked at roadside.

While out of the vehicle, the victim was talking to someone on the phone. Well, at that time the culprit opened the vehicle door from the left and took the money inside. The culprit of totally two persons immediately fled. The victim just realized after receiv-ing the call. “The culprits have been known to pass far away and they rode an automatic motor-cycle,” he explained.

The victim was shocked when

knowing if the money in the bag had been taken away by unknown person. The victim shouted at the thieves, but he could do nothing as the culprits disappeared in the distance. “The victim shouted at the thieves. Such a shout was responded by residents and were trying to catch the culprits. However, the results are useless and traces of the culprits disap-peared,” he said while asking not to publish his identity.

After the incident, the victim reported the case to Bali Police. Some members of criminal in-vestigator unit came down to the scene for making an investiga-tion. A number of witnesses were examined, but no one knew the identity of the culprits. Meanwhile, the Spokesperson of Bali Police, Hariadi, when asked for his confir-mation justified the incident. “The case is still under investigation,” he said. (kmb21)

Headman of Pesinggahan, Nyoman Suastika, admitted on Tuesday (Mar 11) that residents protested against the waste of fish processing. Even, he pointed out in person the location. This issue had been going on for a long time. All persuasive efforts had been taken to the business owner, Komang Suidep. However, it was fruitless. When he was the chief of Pesinggahan cus-tomary village, Suastika also admitted to have sent a com-plaint letter to the Klungkung Environment Agency (BLH).

The BLH team had also come down to location. It gave the fish processing owner a very decisive warning and ad-vised to make a septic tank in the premise of his business.

However, so far the waste of fish processing was still flowed into the river. At this time, it happened to be passing at Pesinggahan residential areas and paddy fields of residents and the beach. As a result, complaints of local residents

Criminal act turned rampant, IDR 300 million burglarized

Fish processing waste at Pesinggahan protested by residents

Bali PostSEMArAPUrA - residents of Pesinggahan, Dawan

subdistrict, Klungkung, severely protested. It was triggered by fish processing waste of Kusamba villager drained into a river and spread a stench. As the peak, residents of Pesing-gahan protested back to the house where the fish processing activity took place, Monday (Mar 10). Even, the workers of fish processing and local residents were reportedly had an argument.

turned into violent protest. A number of residents who were upset with the condition had come to the business premise of fish processing and met with local labor. Even, they had got involved in fist fights. Suastika claimed to be increasingly concerned with this situation, so he asked for the help of Environment Agency to take firm action.

“At this time, the waste also flows to the public bathing place. Having been polluted, people then do not dare to use it again. A number of residents also suffer from itching,” he said.

The Head of Klungkung Environment Agency, Dewa Oka Kusumajaya, admitted last Tuesday to have received a let-ter of complaint from the Chief of Pesinggahan customary village and had come down to location. His party recognized the disposal of fish processing waste at this time indeed vio-lated the rules. When coming to location, the Environment Agency had issued a reprimand

and guidance. “At that time, we’ve already recommended him to make a septic tank. But if the condition is like that, we will come down again to check it out,” he said.

If it remained stubborn, the En-vironment Agency would report to Justice Team to perform an execu-tion. His party also claimed to be surprised because the business had owned a permit whereas it had not owned a waste disposal site.

When confirmed separately, Ko-

mang Suidep admitted to dispose waste into the river. He also admit-ted there was a fight at his business premise due to the waste. However, he pointed the issue was deliberately exaggerated. “It happened because of jealousy motif. People who came into the business premise were drunk and hit my workers,” he said.

Regarding the waste problem, he claimed to have been provid-ing septic tank at his premise of business. However, the size was

small. As planned and based on the advice of the Environment Agency, Suidep would make larger septic tanks so as not to dispose waste into the river. Meanwhile, the Headman of Kusamba, Ketut Winastra, also advised his resident last Tuesday to make septic tank to hold the waste of fish processing. After all, according to him, it was not allowed to dispose any waste into the river. Moreover, it could also provoke a protest. (kmb31)

DENPASAR - In order to exten-sively promote healthy lifestyle by running and to share with others, IndoRunners Bali community (IBC) has been challenged by Yamaha Motor and BPR Indra, as the main sponsors, to run as far as they can for a special program of ‘We Run 100 KM A Day’ throughout the month of February to April 2014. The running challenge is designed to encourage the members in keeping their daily lifestyle as healthy as can be by run-ning.

The positive movement will be partook by 50 to 60 members of IndoRunners Bali enthusiasts, both beginner and professional. The result of this challenge will be converted monthly by main sponsors into some funds to be donated to several charity foundations in Bali.

IndoRunners Bali is part of the biggest running community in In-donesia consists of all ages, from amateur to professional, IndoRun-ners. Together with Yamaha and BPR Indra, IndoRunners Bali affirms its solid commitment to spread the run-ning virus to the island of Gods by choreographing some positive and healthy movements. ‘We Run 100 KM A Day program’ is a challenge for the community members to keep moving the feet fast and reach the goal of 100 KM run per day for a good cause. This program will last for three months from February to April 2014. Every month, IndoRunners will set the bar higher from 100 KM per day in February, to 110 KM per day in

“If the rupiah appreciates coupled with decline in interest rates, the economy will certainly increase. Pas-sionate economy will have an impact on the economic growth because one of the stimuli on the economic growth is the competitive bank interest rates and it can be absorbed by employers,” said Prof. Raka Suardana in Denpasar, Tuesday (Mar 11).

According to him, since the be-ginning of the year, the rupiah was recorded to appreciate as much as 6.6 percent. This condition made it the most powerful currency in

Rupiah appreciates, economy increasingly grows better

Bali Post

DENPASAR - The appreciation of rupiah exchange to IDR 11,372 per U.S. dollar has a posi-tive impact on the economy of Indonesia, including Bali. The Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), Undiknas University, Prof. Dr. IB Raka Suardana, said the appreciation reflected the improvement of economic indicators.

Asia. Rupiah was traded at IDR 11,365 per U.S. dollar on Monday (Mar 10), or got appreciated by 0.7 percent. Since the beginning of March, the rupiah strengthened by 2.1 percent. It seemed in line with the appreciation of swift capital inflow in the stock market following the recovery of investor confidence to the emerging countries, especially Indonesia, which was considered to have a relatively lower risk than other developing countries.

“Of course, the parties made most advantageous by the appreciation of

rupiah are importers. By all means, they will spend fewer dollars when purchasing goods or services over-seas,” he said.

He said if they brought in raw materials, with the appreciation of rupiah, the basic price of goods would decline as well which affected the selling price to go down. Ulti-mately, consumers would also get the benefits, especially consumers who consumed goods made from imported raw materials.

“The government must continue to keep the current account deficit in

2014 so it will not be more than 2.5 percent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP),” he said.

He mentioned that rupiah tended to move contradictorily in the op-posite direction to regional rate of exchange which was in line with the depreciation of regional Asian cur-rencies such as the Japanese Yen and Chinese Yuan. It happened because the Japanese and Chinese economy was under estimation of market par-ticipants. However, Indonesia was the country most rapidly respond-ing to market demands where the Bank Indonesia (BI) tightened the monetary policy by raising the refer-ential interest rate at 175 basis points from June 2013 to 7.5 percent until February 2014 and the government made policy to increase the price of subsidized fuel in July 2013.

“Rapid response causes the current

account continues to improve. Ad-ditionally, the economic stability has well maintained since the government and Bank Indonesia made anticipation against the external pressure due to the tapering off policy conducted by the U.S. central bank (the Fed),” he explained.

Meanwhile, in relation to general election to be held a month later, Prof. Raka Suardana believed it did not have positive correlation to the appreciation of rupiah. Election would have an impact on the amount of money in cir-culation, either for the implementation of the election itself and the political cost incurred by political parties and individual candidates.

“With the increasing amount of money in circulation, it will obvi-ously make the economy grow, though a little or not too significant,” he said. (kmb27)

IBC doing “We Run 100 Km a Day” programMarch, and then finish with 120 KM per day in April 2014. Altogether, the community has set the target of 2,800 KM in the first month, 3,410 KM in second month, followed by 3,600 KM in the last month.

“With this challenge being seized, we do hope that we can see a great enthusiasm of sport fanatics and running enthusiasts in Bali to partake. In several big cities in Indonesia, running is not only a trend. It has become a massive movement that inspired many urbanites to be exposed to a healthier lifestyle. Wishfully, this will be followed soon by our local society on all over the island”, said HandikWidiartarepresenting BPR Indra. “Together with BPR Indra, we utterly support this program by upholding ourcommitment through sponsorship and donation of IDR 12,000,000 if only IndoRunners Bali is able to accomplishe what they have been targeting every month or for at least IDR 7,000,000 if the distance target is almost reached. Now, provincial govern-ment has also done some efforts to promote Bali as a world-class sports tourism destination. Therefore, it is definitely the time for Bali to start running and join IndoRunners Bali,” added Emil Satriya represent-ing Yamaha Motor Bali.

This challenge is open for all running enthusiasts, from amateur to professional, who aspire to join IndoRunners Bali community. For those who domicile in Bali, the community opens the door wide open in welcoming new members

on the regular running sched-ule – every Thursday at 17.45 at Renon Park (gather in front of the entrance of BajraSandhi Museum), every Sunday at 6.15 at the same venueor 5.45 in Jimbaran (gather nearby GWK). All the participants are required to download and sign-up for Endomondo account for distance validation and running route map. This application can be downloaded for free in any iOS, BlackBerry, Windows and Android smartphones.

“We are beyond thrilled to wit-

ness how IndoRunners Bali is im-mensely growing organically in Bali. It is because of the great spirits of our existing members whose energy has inspired others to join and share the spirit of spreading the running virus to many more. Of course we want this virus to be a healthy virus that will last forever and lie beneath their hearts. Not just a trend, but become a habit. From habit, it becomes lifestyle. Running is not easy, but it is not difficult to do as long as we keep learning and discovering how to run better or farther, not

faster. We are also very fortunate that Bali is blessed with variety of running tracks offering stunning backdrops that will take our breath away. The air quality here is much better compared to many other cit-ies, from the greeneries to invigorate our sight sensory, the soft white sandy beaches, the lush hills and paddy fields, the exciting touristic areas and many more other natural vistas awaiting to be explored by running,” said Patricia Heny, the coordinator of IndoRunners Bali community. The Cefaly device is a battery-powered plastic band worn across the forehead. Using an adhesive electrode, the band emits a low electrical current to stimulate nerves associated with migraine pain. Users may feel a tingling sensation on the skin where the electrode is applied. The device is designed to be used no more than 20 minutes a day by patients 18 years and older.

A 67-person study reviewed by the FDA showed patients using the device experienced fewer migraines per month than patients using a placebo device. The Cefaly headband did not completely eliminate migraine headaches or reduce the intensity of migraines that oc-curred. About 53 percent of 2,313 patients in a separate study said they were satisfied with the device and were willing to purchase it for future use.

No serious adverse events were connected with the device. Cephaly is manufactured by Cephaly Technology of Belgium.

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday re-jected an appeal from a school that tried to ban students from wearing “I (heart) Boobies!” bracelets to promote breast cancer awareness, ending a case that began more than three years ago with the suspension of two middle-school girls who refused a principal’s order to take them off.

The case started in 2010 when two girls, then ages 12 and 13, challenged the ban. Kayla Marti-nez and Brianna Hawk said they were trying to promote awareness of the disease at their middle school. They wore the bracelets on their school’s Breast Cancer Awareness Day — in defiance of a ban that had been announced a day earlier — and refused to take them off. The girls filed suit after being suspended from class.

The justices left in place a U.S. appeals court ruling that found the bracelets were not “plainly lewd,” nor had they caused a disruption. “The principle here is that even kids talk about im-portant things, and when they talk about important things, that’s what we should be encouraging,” Mary Catherine Roper, an at-torney with the American Civil Liberties Union of Pennsylvania,

WASHINGTON — U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder on Monday called an increase in heroin-related deaths an “urgent and growing public health crisis” and said first responders should carry with them a drug that can reverse the effects of an overdose.

The video message posted on the Justice Department’s website reflects the federal government’s concern about the growing prevalence of heroin and prescription painkillers’ abuse. The number of overdose deaths involving heroin increased by 45 percent between 2006 and 2010, according to White House Office of National Drug Control Policy.

“Addiction to heroin and other opiates, including certain prescription pain-killers, is impacting the lives of Americans in every state, in every region, and from every background and walk of life — and all too often, with deadly results,” Holder said in the message.

His public support for an antidote that could be used to rescue overdosing drug users mirrors the position of the White House drug policy office, which has also urged all first responders to have the medication on hand. At least 17 states and the Washington, D.C. — allow naloxone — commonly known by the brand name Narcan — to be dis-tributed to the public, and bills are pending in some states to increase access to it.

Advocates say Narcan, which comes in a spray and inject-able form, has the potential to save many lives if adminis-tered within a certain window. But critics fear that making the antidote too accessible could encourage drug use.

Holder said law enforcement is combatting the overdose problem, including by cutting off the supply chain that il-licitly furnishes prescription painkillers to drug addicts. But he said more work is needed to prevent and treat drug addiction.

“There’s too much information and confusion right now. It is very hard for us to decide whether a given piece of information is ac-curate,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang told report-ers in Beijing. “We will not give it up as long as there’s still a shred of hope.”

The mother of passenger Zou Jingsheng, who would only give her name as Zou, wept and spoke halt-ingly about her missing son while staying at a hotel near the Beijing airport. She expressed frustration with the airline and the Malaysian government over their handling of the case.

“I want to talk more, but all this is very stressful, and after all it is my son’s life that I am concerned about. I just want to know where he is, and wish he is safe and alive,” she said.

Malaysia Airlines flight 370 took off from Kuala Lumpur for Beijing early Saturday morning and last made contact with ground control officials about 35,000 feet

above the Gulf of Thailand between Malaysia and southern Vietnam before vanishing. Dozens of planes and ships from at least eight nations are scouring waters on both sides of peninsular Malaysia but have found no trace of the jet.

Citing military radar, Malaysian authorities have said the plane may have turned back from its last known position, possibly making it as far as the Strait of Malacca, a busy shipping lane west of the narrow nation some 400 kilometers (250 miles) from the plane’s last known coordinates.

How it might have done this without being clearly detected has raised questions over whether its electrical systems, including transponders allowing it to be identified by radar, were either knocked out or turned off. If it did manage to fly on, it would chal-lenge earlier theories that the plane may have suffered a catastrophic incident, initially thought reason-able because it didn’t send out any distress signals.

Authorities have not ruled out any possible cause, including me-chanical failure, pilot error, sabo-

tage or terrorism. Both the Boeing 777 and Malaysia Airlines have excellent safety records. Until

wreckage or debris is found and examined, it will be very hard to say what happened.

DUBAI, United Arab Emir-ates — Iranian President Hassan Rouhani is visiting nearby Oman on his first trip to an Arab country since taking office last year.

Iran’s state TV says Rouhani, who has vowed to improve Teh-ran’s relations with neighbors, landed in Muscat on Wednesday. A high-ranking economic delega-tion is accompanying him on the two-day visit aimed at boosting

bilateral relations between the two countries.

Iran and Oman lie on opposite sides of the strategic Strait of Hor-muz, the waterway at the mouth of the Persian Gulf that is the route for one fifth of the world’s oil.

Saudi Arabia and other Western-allied Gulf Arab nations are wary of Iran’s influence. Oman has traditionally had warm relations with Iran and has at times acted as a mediator between Tehran and the West.

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — Malaysia asked India to join the expanding search for the missing Boeing 777 near the Andaman Sea — far to the northwest of its last reported position and a further sign Wednesday that authorities have no idea where the plane might be more than four days after it vanished. The mystery over the plane’s where-abouts has been confounded by confusing and occasionally conflicting statements by Malaysian officials, adding to the anguish of relatives of the 239 people on board the flight — two thirds of them Chinese.

Asmat is a tribe occupying the southern part of Papua, flanked by two counties namely the Timika and Merauke. Mean-while, its population is divided into two, namely those living in coastal areas and inland. Both have differences in terms of way of life, social structure and ritual. This can be seen from the work of the artists in the Asmat sculpture. The Asmat County itself was established in 2014 with the capital in Agats, said the Head of Asmat Tourism Pro-motion, Rudolf Marcus Mbait in Ubud amidst the activities.

One of the Asmat cultures in-herited today is almost the same as Balinese culture. Asmat peo-ple have a very strong belief in the existence of ancestral spirits who protect them. In order to honor the ancestors, the Asmat always performs traditional cer-emonies accompanied with the dance and unique chants. “This

event poses a beginning of good relationship between the Asmat and the Padang Tegal custom-ary village, Ubud, in the field of the arts and culture,” said I Ketut Budiana, a committee of the activity.

Meanwhile, Deputy Regent of Gianyar, Made Mahayastra, who was present in the Asmat promotion in Ubud, said the art collaboration between the Asmat County and Gianyar County would have a positive impact on the development of tourism in Asmat.

Uniqueness of the sublime Asmat culture and heritage needed to be promoted to con-stantly make the Asmat tribe and its culture a tourist desti-nation in the Papua Province. “In the future, Gianyar also expects a wider cooperation with the Asmat County in terms of tourism development,” he explained. NEGARA - Construction of bus stops at every entrance to village in Jembrana reaps criticism. Other than considered inappropriate, the budget for the construction is also considered too large and it actually can be transferred to village for a more beneficial need.

The bus stop construction pro-gram has been undertaken since last year. Currently, it remains under construction at some rural road sec-tions. However, its function is more appropriate for post of motorcycle taxi because it is not located near the main road passed through by intercity bus within the province. Some bus stops are built away from the main road, while in Melaya and on the road to Palasari are adjacent to each other with the existing bus stop. A community leader of Tukadaya, Ketut Wisnu Wardana,

said on Tuesday (Mar 11) that his party deeply regretted because its construction was considered inap-propriate. Moreover, he heard if each construction cost up to IDR 200 million.

“Its function is not urgent. I think it is better intended for something more useful at village,” said the for-mer headman of Tukadaya. Wisnu exemplified the bus stop built at Tukadaya village. According to him, it was less strategic. The bud-get of hundreds of millions should be used for other urgent needs for people at village. For instance, the people of Tukadaya urgently needed the drinking water pipeline network or water storage tank.

On the other hand, the Head of Jembrana Transportation Agency, I Gusti Bagus Putra Riyadi, said the budget for each bus stop was IDR 48 million, not IDR 200 million. The construction had also passed

through a careful study and was also beneficial for transportation system in Jembrana. The existence of bus stops at every village would facili-tate the rural and other transporta-tion. “A bus stop at the village has a clear point for rural transportation from terminal. For example, there are people visiting Jembrana and want to visit one of the villages. By riding urban or rural transportation, they will get clear point where to drop,” he explained.

The presence of the bus stop was also to realize the Jembrana County to win the Wahana Tata Nugraha (WTN) or transportation award for the region in organizing and manag-ing traffic for small town including the administrative management, technical operation and commit-ment of the local leader. Last year, Jembrana won the WTN award for the category of Traffic for Small Town. (kmb26)

HANOVER - European IT security firms have flocked to the world’s biggest high-tech fair with hopes of benefiting from the fallout from shock revelations of mass US and British spying.

Exactly a year ago, Chancellor Angela Merkel vaunted her new, ultra-secure Smartphone at the opening of the same fair, the CeBIT, in the northern city of Hanover.

Revelations that US intelligence allegedly eavesdropped on her mobile phone conversations and hoovered up vast amounts of online data and telephone records from average citizens have since sent shockwaves around the world.

German firm Secusmart, which provides the security features for the German government’s telephones, says it has now been approached by several other governments.

Secusmart chief Hans-Christoph Quelle declined to name the governments in question but stressed his business had seen a knock-on effect from the leaks by rogue US analyst Edward Snowden.

“Our core product is mobile voice encryption. And mobile voice encryption was a nerdy feature,” the head of the 2007-established company said in an interview at the five-day CeBIT with AFP.

But he added: “Snowden has already changed things because at that time (in 2013 when Merkel showed off her new phone) everybody thought that only mobile networks are unsecure.

“But we learned with Snowden that all voice calls are un-secure.”

Secusmart has this year teamed up with Britain’s Vodafone to create an app to allow businesses to keep all telephone com-munications, including conference calls, secure.

Thanks to this new app, as well demand for the ability to ensure conversations are kept safe having increased “dramatical-ly”, Secusmart is banking on 20-percent growth, Quelle said.

It is far from alone in eyeing new business in the wake of the Snowden leaks.

Among CeBIT’s sprawling layout, one entire hangar-like hall has been turned over to IT security, with around 500 companies offering specialised solutions, many from Europe and Asia.

By casting doubt on the confidentiality of data in the digital world, the scandal over mass spying “has shown consumers everywhere in the world the importance of protecting data,” Dieter Kempf, head of German IT industry lobby BITKOM, told AFP.

According to the European Information Technology Observa-tory, a platform managed by a subsidiary of BITKOM, two thirds of European companies want to invest in security measures.

According to US-based technology and market research company Forrester Research, the US high-tech sector -- the first to be hit in terms of a loss of confidence -- could lose up to $180 billion (130 billion euros) in sales by 2016.

As the World Wide Web notches up its 25th birthday, some companies are promoting the regional anchoring of digital data as one way to reassure consumers.

At CeBIT, German operator Deutsche Telekom targeted medium-sized companies with an offer including its “Made in Germany” cloud where its remote data storage centres are located in the country.

The telecoms giant has also teamed up with two other leading German providers of electronic messaging to ensure securer mails between the three, in an initiative christened “Email Made In Germany”.

The deal came as companies wrap up annual labour talks known as Shunto, or the “spring offen-sive”.

The usually low-key negotia-tions were being closely watched to see if cash-rich firms would put more money in workers’ pockets, amid worries about the tax hike slamming the brakes on growth.

Japan’s auto sector was a key target, with all eyes on the world’s biggest automaker Toyota which -- along with other major export-ers -- has posted big profits on the back of sharply weaker yen since Prime Minister Shinzo Abe swept to power in late 2012.

On Wednesday, Toyota said it would raise employees pay by an average of 2,700 yen ($26) a month, while they would also get an aver-age bonus worth about 6.8 months of their annual base wage -- a com-mon pay structure in Japan.

The pay rise was less than the 4,000 yen a month demanded by Toyota’s union, but it was the Camry and Corolla maker’s first

wage hike in six years. The increase amounts to about

a 0.8 percent rise over current pay levels.

Japan’s number-two automaker Nissan also said its employees would get 3,500 yen more each month, and a bonus worth 5.6 months of regular pay.

Bonuses are usually paid out in a lump sum twice a year, but it’s not guaranteed compensation.

The electronics sectors, ham-mered by losses in recent years, also moved with six major firms -- including Hitachi and Panasonic -- hiking wages by 2,000 yen a month, their biggest-ever increase.

Convenience store operator Lawson has agreed to its first wage rise in 12 years.

The focus would now shift from blue-chip firms to see if small and mid-sized companies, which em-ploy the bulk of Japanese workers, would follow the lead on pay.

The seemingly small wage hikes are a major development in a coun-try that has suffered deflation for

years, meaning consumers rarely face higher prices for everyday goods.

Abe’s economic growth blitz, dubbed Abenomics, is aimed at reversing falling prices and recent data suggest Tokyo is making headway in stoking lasting infla-tion, which would lead to higher prices.

Consumers are also getting set for a sales tax rise to 8.0 percent on April 1, up from 5.0 percent.

The hike is seen as crucial to shrinking Japan’s massive national debt, but there are fears it could weigh on consumer spending and put the brakes on growth.

Abe has been calling on Japa-nese firms to raise salaries so workers would have more money to spend on everyday goods, a move seen as crucial to making his growth bid work.

But concerns gathered pace this week as revised growth data showed the world’s third-largest economy expanded at a slower pace than initially thought last year.

The cooperation agreement was signed at the 1st Indonesia-Iraq Joint Working Group Meet-ing and put in the minutes of meeting on the settlement of the draft Letter of Intent regarding oil supply agreement between Indo-nesia and Iraq on Tuesday.

The signing was done byh Edy Hermantoro, Indonesia’s Direc-tor General of Oil and Gas who led the country’s delegation to the meeting and his counterpart, Delman N Abdullah, the Direc-tor General for Midland Old Company of the Iraqi Ministry of Oil.

Edy Hermantoro said bilateral relations between Indonesia and Iraq have gone long.

He said oil and gas resources in the two countries have helped strengthen the two countries’ bilateral relations.

“The Iraqi government and businesses have been turning their attention more to South-east Asia in the past few years. Indonesia as the biggest Muslim country has attracted their atten-tion,” he said.

He said the oil and gas coop-eration between the two countries has been closer following the the visit of Iraqi deputy prime miniter for energy Hussain al-Shahristani to Indonesia on June 24-27, 2012.

The bi lateral meeting has opened bigger cooperation op-portunities for the two countries, he said.

“At the time the two countries agreed to put their cooperation agreement concretely in an Mem-orandum of Understanding which will later be followed by kind of Letter of Intent,” he said.

To implement the MOU Edy Hermatoro said the first Joint Work-ing Group meeting was held.

The meeting has discussed oil and gas, electricity, minerals and coals, renewed energy as well as training and education and re-search of development, he said.

He said the Indonesian govern-ment was optimistic bilateral re-lations between the two countries would increase.

“Iraq is expected to give posi-tive and wider business as well as investment opportunities for Indonesia,” he said.

“We do not want to fight. But if need be to defend our sovereignty, then we have to be ready. Our navy’s strength has been increased,” President Yudhoyono noted dur-ing an exhibition and demonstration of the Navy’s main weapons at the Eastern Fleet Pier in Surabaya, East Java, on Wednesday.

He pointed out that violations of sovereignty could hap-pen in many forms, especially territorial, with regard to the country’s territory, which is mostly water.

Flanked by Defense Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro, President Yudhoyono inspected the weapons that were ac-quired into the navy force development program during the strategic plan periods of 2005-2009 and 2010-2014.

Defense Minister Purnomo added that a number of weapons on display were the four Sygma-class corvets, four Landing Platform Dock vessels, four units of 40 M type Quick Missile Ship and two 43 M type units of Quick Patrol Ship.

team has deployed a ship to Malacca strait to help search for a missing Malaysian airplane, the team’s spokesman Ibnu Haris said.

“We have started the search operation since Tuesday around the Malacca strait. However, our search and rescue workers have yet to find any sign of the aircraft’s where-abouts,” he said on Wednesday.

There were 22 personnel on board of the ship, deployed to support Indonesia’s participation in searching for the missing plane, he said.

The Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 carrying 239 people, including seven Indonesians, went missing on its flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, China, on early Saturday.

The ill-fated aircraft was scheduled to land at Beijing International Airport at 6.30 am local time. However, the aircraft lost radar contact with Subang air traffic control at around 2.40 am local time.

In a search operation, an Indonesian Air Force’s Boe-ing A7303 had combed the Malacca Strait from Monday to Tuesday but it failed to spot any sign of the aircraft’s whereabouts.

“Indonesian Air Force aircraft has combed A to B spot area (at the suspected crash site of MAS MH370) back and forth in Malacca strait to assist Malaysia in finding the missing plane,” Commander of Air Base Ranai Lieutenant Colonel Aviator Andri Gandhy said.

The Indonesian Air Force`s search range spread from upper Aceh to Malacca strait, and the search was carried out by using electronic radar monitoring and optical pic-tures and videos.

In order to back up its search operation, Indonesia had

also deployed five naval ships and a helicopter by coordi-nating with the Malaysian authorities.

The National Search and Rescue Agency (BASAR-NAS) also deployed a SAR ship to help the search and evacuation.

Through the cooperation pattern, each fisherman group determined the rates. The services were paid by travel agencies and hotel selling the tour packages to travelers who stayed at hotel. Each fisherman group had set rate where every traveler was charged for IDR 50,000 and there was also another tariff at IDR 60,000. Each voyage, travelers did not only see dolphin attraction, but also do diving, snorkeling and fishing. Each fisherman group took travelers to enjoy dolphin tour for once trip a day by motorized wooden boat.

“Since the past, the pattern of management is like that and the tour schedule was only once a day. Therefore, during high season of tourist visits, they could not be served to the maximum,” he explained.

Suardipa added that to further enliven the dolphin tourism it was neces-sary to change the pattern of management. He exemplified the tour schedule should be carried out more than once and other than in the morning. It should be preceded with studies and appointment of researchers to deter-mine the zones where dolphin could be found other than in the morning. Once the zone was found, it could be made a sort of fish aggregating device (FAD). The device could be made into a point for fishermen to deliver trav-elers not only once. However, they could take travelers at noon and in the afternoon. Such effort did not only make the dolphin population as target, but fishermen were also responsible for taking care of it and providing food in the form of small fish. “There has been a researcher who claimed if the dolphin can be found at noon and in the afternoon. It must be followed up how we can determine the zone and make fish aggregating device there. If we have the device and the dolphin can be found, automatically fisher-man does not only sail once a day but more. So, fishermen can increase their income,” he said.

Other than changing the pattern of tourism management, Suardipa added that Lovina tourism players should also be creative by designing additional tour packages, and did not rely on the dolphin tour alone. For instance, it could be done by designing a tourism event by including the existing scheduled package tour. Aside from selling tour package, it should also be added with the performing arts, native culture and typical culinary treasure of Buleleng. This could be packed into a single package and was believed to be able to lure more tourists to visit Lovina. “All this time, we see that it’s only offered a single dolphin tour and nothing more after that. If it is designed in a package with scheduled event and added with other tour, I’m sure this package will be saleable,” he added. (mud)

Demonstrators gathered at two squares in central Athens, including cleaning staff fired by the Finance Ministry, who marched holding up buckets and mops. The latest dis-ruptions have come as negotiations with rescue lenders have dragged on for months, with the government reluctant to impose more economic pain in a country already exhausted by a six-year recession.

“We believe that they will be

concluded by Sunday,” government spokesman Simos Kedikoglou told private Antenna television. “We are near the end of the crisis, and this is the last major consultation.”

Greece has been hammered by a vicious financial crisis since late 2009 that developed into an eco-nomic depression. The economy has shrunk by around a quarter while unemployment has soared to over 25 percent.

Since May 2010, Greece has been dependent on billions of euros in res-cue loans from the other European Union countries that use the euro, and from the International Monetary Fund. In return, successive Greek governments have had to slash spending, increase taxes and enact wide-ranging economic reforms. There are hopes that the country’s recession will soon end but the re-covery is expected to be slow.

SRINAGAR, India — Indian officials say heavy snowfall has unleashed avalanches and collapsed homes in Kashmir, killing at least 10 people.

Authorities evacuated dozens of people Wednesday from high-risk

areas across the Indian-controlled region of the territory divided with and claimed by Pakistan. Police offi-cer Imtiyaz Hussain says avalanches killed two Indian army soldiers camped in the mountainous Kargil region near Pakistan-controlled Kashmir, as well as three Nepalese laborers working nearby.

Five more people were killed when dozens of homes crumpled under the weight of a heavy snow pack in the southern Kulgam and Shopian areas. The snow has also caused power lines to snap and cut some areas off from the rest of India. Avalanches and landslides are com-mon in the Himalayan region.

BERLIN — NATO deployed two surveillance planes to fly over Poland and Romania on Wednesday to monitor the crisis in neighbor-ing Ukraine.

The military alliance said two AWACS, or Airborne Warning And Control System, reconnaissance planes took off from bases in Germany and Britain.

The surveillance flights won’t leave the airspace of its member na-tions — thus not crossing either into Ukrainian or Russian airspace, a spokesman for NATO’s operational headquarters said in Belgium.

“The planes can observe over 300,000 square kilometers (115,000 square miles) and will primarily be looking on air activity and the sea,” Lt. Col. Jay Janzen said, adding that one AWACS aircraft already went on a surveillance mission to Romania on Tuesday and that more mis-sions were being planned.

“Our flights will not leave NATO airspace,” Janzen said. “Regard-less, we can observe, we can look a very long way.”

NATO’s 28 member states decided Monday to intensify the assess-ment of the possible threat the Ukrainian crisis poses to the alliance by sending AWACS planes. The decision comes after deployments of U.S. fighter planes to eastern European nations bordering Russia, such as Poland and Lithuania.

ATHENS, Greece — A 24-hour strike by civil servants disrupted public services in Greece Wednesday as the country’s government struggled to hammer out a deal on further austerity measures with international creditors. The strike by public sector unions hit services at tax of-fices, local government and elsewhere. A protest march is planned in central Athens later in the day, while civil servants have penciled in another 48-hour strike on March 19-20.

MANGUPURA - Nungnung waterfalls have increased in popularity for French and German visitors to Bali. The waterfalls are located near the village of Plaga in the area of Petang, Northern Badung, The way down to the source of the water is about 50 meters and used to be very difficult and steep. But now it can be easily reached through hundreds of concrete stairs. The idea to build these stairs was initiated by the people who live in the neighborhood in cooperation with the government. It takes about 60 minutes (40 km) from Denpasar to get to the location of the waterfalls by bus. Walking up and down the stairs is not as tiring as it sounds, thanks to the cool air in the mountain which makes the body fresh, as does the surrounding panorama.

Gonzalez had never won an ATP Tour-level match in six tries before Indian Wells. He won third-set tiebreakers in his first two matches here before keeping the world’s second-ranked man on the court for just over 1 1/2 hours. “It took me a little bit to get used to it,” Djokovic said. “You’ve got new faces and new players who are able to chal-lenge the top guys, and this is good for the sport. It also makes us work harder and improve trying to get our game to a high level because the guys are coming up.”

Djokovic had 28 winners to 11 for Gonzalez, who also had 23 un-forced errors. “I just had a big loss of concentration and allowed him to

win the second set for no reason,” Djokovic said. “Bounced back better in the third, but I obviously cannot allow myself to have these particular concentration lapses in the match at this level.”

Djokovic next plays Marin Cilic of Croatia, who beat Tommy Ro-bredo 6-4, 6-3. John Isner, the lone American remaining in the men’s draw, defeated Lu Yen-hsun of Taiwan 6-4, 6-3 to reach the fourth round. Isner fired 13 aces, hit 32 winners and gained the only two breaks of the match. Lu managed just nine winners and never had a break point against Isner.

“I can only say, ‘Welcome to the crazy women’s tennis tour,’” Li said about the last game. Jelena Jankovic routed Caroline Wozniacki 6-3, 6-1 to reach the quarterfinals, winning a matchup of former tournament champions and No. 1-ranked play-ers.

Kaka gave Milan some hope by canceling out the opener in the 27th only to rue a glaring miss moments before Arda Turan volleyed over Milan goalkeeper Christian Ab-biati to put Atletico back in front. With Milan striker Mario Balotelli ineffective, Atletico choked its op-ponent with constant pressure after the restart and slowly began to pull away with Raul Garcia heading home before Diego Costa com-pleted the 5-1 aggregate win with his 29th goal of the season.

Milan’s exit left Europe’s top-tier tournament without an Italian team in the last eight. Elsewhere, Bayern Munich eliminated Arsenal 3-1 on aggregate after a 1-1 draw at home.

Atletico’s near 50,000 fans pro-

vided the Spanish club with extra pep throughout, but especially at the start when the hosts dominated a Milan team that seemed a step behind. “I’m happy because this is a group of men who interpret football in an extraordinary way,” Atletico coach Diego Simeone said. “They have incredible pas-sion for our play. We played the game we needed to, especially at the start.”

Michael Essien was particularly exposed by Atletico’s speed, and his turnover led Koke to set up Diego Costa for the acrobatic opener. Mi-lan began to dominate possession and bounced back into the contest.

Despite a weak effort from Ba-lotelli, Milan made Atletico pay for its lethargic play as Kaka reached

Andrea Poli’s cross at the far post to head off defender Juanfran Tor-res and beyond goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. Kaka should have made it 2-1 after another defensive lapse by Atletico, but the Brazilian headed over while alone in the box.

That miss proved costly as Turan chested the ball down in the 40th for a quick volley that took a deflection and dipped over Abbiati. “The second goal killed us, the players lost a lot from that,” said Milan coach Clarence Seedorf, whose team’s poor domestic season means it is unlikely to return to the competition next season. “Mentally we couldn’t recover after that.”

Balotelli’s frustration got the better of him as he was booked for protesting before halftime, the

Italy striker looking sullen and adrift of his teammates for most of the match. All of Atletico’s players, meanwhile, seemed to be contributing as the Spanish upstarts also thrived off the boot of Diego Costa.

“If I am where I am, it’s be-cause the team helped get me here. I could never have achieved this on my own,” Diego Costa said after taking his Champions League tally to seven goals. “I just try to help the team.”

MUNICH — Club president Uli Hoeness’ trial overshadowed a subdued performance as Bayern Munich drew 1-1 with Arsenal to reach the Champions League quar-terfinals with a 3-1 aggregate win from the round-of-16 on Tuesday. With his trial for alleged tax evasion grabbing the headlines in Germany, Hoeness attended the game and was probably glad the spotlight left him, albeit temporarily.

“Good luck to Bayern. They’re a good side but this side is more vulnerable than last year’s,” Ar-senal coach Arsene Wenger said.

Bayern captain Philipp Lahm acknowledged Hoeness’ trial was in the players’ minds. “Of course it’s also an issue within the team,” Lahm said.

Bayern midfielder Bastian Sch-weinsteiger finished coolly from Franck Ribery’s cross to put the de-fending champion in a commanding position in the 55th minute.

Lukas Podolski responded with-in two minutes against his former side by dispossessing Philipp Lahm in the penalty area and smashing the ball past Manuel Neuer to the roof of the net from an acute angle.

The goals breathed life into a game that Bayern mostly domi-

nated. Nerves gripped the home side — perhaps as a result of the 2-0 home defeat to Arsenal at the same stage last season — but they didn’t last long. “We played with a lot of intelligence,” Bayern coach Pep Guardiola said. “We deserved to progress.”

Thomas Mueller had the chance to make it 2-1 after Arjen Robben went down under Laurent Kosci-elny’s challenge, but Lukasz Fabi-anski saved his penalty on the line in injury time. “Progression was never in danger. The way (we did it) will be all the same tomorrow,” Mueller said.

Newcastle man- ager Alan Pardew was banned for seven matches on Tuesday for head-butting an op-p o s i n g player during a Pre-

mier League game, further besmirching

the reputation of one of English football’s most

hot-headed coaches. Pardew was hit with the heaviest

punishment ever inflicted on a Premier League manager, which will involve him initially serving a three-match sta-dium suspension. He is banned from being on the touchline for the other four games.

“As I have made clear, I deeply regret the in-cident and again wholeheartedly apologize to all parties for my conduct, which I understand was not acceptable,” Pardew said in a statement released by Newcastle after an FA hearing. “I will accept the punishment handed down by the FA today.”

Pardew already has been sanctioned by New-castle, accepting a formal warning and a fine of 100,000 pounds ($168,000), following his confron-tation with Hull midfielder David Meyler on March 1. Meyler initially barged into Pardew as he looked to retrieve the ball for a throw-in in the 72nd minute of the game at KC Stadium. Pardew squared up to Meyler and moved his head in the direction of the

player’s face, then was sent to the stands. The FA also fined Pardew 60,000 pounds

($100,000) and warned him about his future con-duct. Pardew is the first Premier League manager to receive a stadium ban. Earlier this season, then-Blackpool manager Paul Ince received a five-match stadium ban from the FA for violently shoving a fourth official during a rant filled with profanity.

It is the latest touchline incident involving the hot-headed Pardew, who was banned for two matches last season for pushing a linesman and also was warned about his conduct in January after abus-ing Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini in the technical area. In light of this latest touchline spat, Pardew said he may have to stay in his seat in the dugout and resist the temptation to get close to the action.

“I’ve always been involved by being on the sideline,” Pardew said. “But I don’t think it can harm my managementship to sit there, and maybe I’m at an age now where I need to.”

Pardew will not be able to attend Craven Cot-tage for Newcastle’s match at Fulham on Saturday. He will also miss the home games against Crystal Palace and Everton. Pardew has apologized to Hull and Meyler. Police said no criminal action will be taken against him. MOSCOW — Zenit St. Petersburg fired coach Luciano Spalletti on Tuesday

following a poor run of form de-

spite having turned the Russian club into a consistent Champions League team.

Besides winning two Russian league titles in three years at Zenit, the 55-year-old Italian was the first coach to take the St. Peters-burg side beyond the group stage of the Champions League.

Zenit, owned by Russian state gas company Gazprom, has only one victory from its last 11 competitive games and faces elimination from Europe after losing 4-2 at home to Borussia Dortmund in the last 16 of the Champions League.

“The management of Zenit football club has taken the decision to dismiss Luciano Spalletti from the post of head coach,” Zenit said in a statement on its website, adding that the club “will always be happy to see him in St. Petersburg.”

Spalletti’s tenure at Zenit was dominated by his relations with star players, especially the challenge of integrating Brazil striker Hulk and Belgium midfielder Axel Witsel.

Hulk publicly said he want-ed to leave Zenit in December 2012, three months after ar-riving, but soon went back on that demand and re-mains at the club.

MOSCOW - Two Russian politicians are demanding the United States be kicked out of this year’s World Cup and has its membership of world soccer’s governing body FIFA terminated. The petition to FIFA was made by Aleksandr Sidyakin and Mikhail Markelov, deputies from the Russian State Duma, which is the country’s lower parliament house.

The politicians cite aggressive actions against Yugoslavia, Iraq and Libya as well as attempts to encroach on Syria, as reasons for asking for the ban. Sidyakin said the written demand was a reaction to a letter sent by American Republican senators Mark Kirk and Dan Coates asking FIFA to exclude Russia from the 2014 World Cup.

“It’s an eye for an eye, a ball for a ball. Don’t let the USA take part in the 2014 World Cup! End their membership of FIFA,” Sidyakin wrote on Twitter. Sidyakin represents the United Russia party, which is the largest in the country and is closely associated with President Vladimir Putin, who was once its leader.

Markelov is a member of the Fair Russia party, though neither is seen as a high-profile politician within the country. When con-tacted by Reuters, a FIFA spokesperson said the organisation had no comment. The 2014 soccer World Cup will be staged in Brazil from June 12 to July 13.

Top-seeded woman Li Na defeat-ed Aleksandra Wozniak of Canada

6-1, 6-4, setting up a quarterfinal against Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia that will be a rematch of the Australian Open final, which Li won in straight sets.

Li rallied from a 0-3 deficit in the second set, winning six of the final seven games. The last game went to deuce 10 times before Li won on her 11th match point when Wozniak’s backhand sailed long.

Boston (22-42) was led by Jared Sullinger with 17 points and Kris Humphries with 15 as its two-

game winning streak ended. At Oklahoma City, Kevin

Durant scored 42 points to help the Thunder defeat the Houston Rockets 106-98. Oklahoma City’s Russell Westbrook scored 24 points and got the best of nem-esis Patrick Beverley. During last year’s playoffs, Beverley dived for the ball and ran into Westbrook’s right knee as a timeout was being called, causing the injury that ended Westbrook’s season and cost him about half of this season. It was their first meeting since the incident.

Former Thunder guard James Harden scored 28 points for the Rockets. The Detroit Pistons beat the Sacramento Kings 99-89 after Josh Smith scored 24 points and Rodney Stuckey added 23.

For the marine force, deliveries of 54 units of BMP-3F amphibious tanks, one unit BREM-L (Tank Recovery) unit and 15 units of LVT 7 Al (Landing Vehicle Tank), two units of CN 235-220 MPA (Maritime Patrol Aircraft) and four units of Bonanza G-36 trainer and three units of Bell-412 EP helicopter have been done.

On the occasion, models or miniatures of main weapons have also been showcased for the purpose of procurement that will be done after the current cabinet’s term.

“The completion of the procurement of the main navy weapons will take a long time,” Defense Minister Purnono Yusgiantoro explained.

The main weapons shown in their miniature forms were three submarines, two Missile Escort destroyers, two frig-ates, tall ships to replace current training ship Dewa Ruci that has served for 62 years, three tank transport ships, one of them to transport Leopard tank, two Hydro-oceanography aid ships and two aid liquid petroleum ships.

The minister pointed out that TNI AL (Indonesian Navy) will also be strengthened with three CN-235 MPA aircraft, 11 Anti-Submarine helicopters, which are equipped with sonar dipping and torpedoes, five units of BTR-4 armored vehicles and a battery of multi-launcher rocket system.

Besides inspecting the exhibition, President Susilo Bam-bang Yudhoyono also enjoyed the demonstration of TNI-AL weapons including spreading mines from Umar 623 maritime patrol aircraft, the firing of an RBU rocket from navy ships, anti-submarine battle demonstration by a navy ship involving an anti-submarine helicopter, a demonstration of releasing a ship from hijackers by frogmen and an amphibious reconnais-sance ship using a Visit Board Search and Seizure, saipass by navy ships and flying pass by navy aircraft and helicopters.

On the occasion, President Yudhoyono was also ac-companied by defense forces (TNI) commander General Moeldoko, army chief of staff General Budiman, navy chief of staff Admiral Marsetio and air force chief of staff Marshal IB Putu Dunia and East Java governor Soekarwo, education minister Muhammad Nuh, Information and Com-munication minister Tifatul Sembiring and public works minister Djoko Kirmanto.

AntaraBANDA ACEH - Aceh province’s search and rescue

team has deployed a ship to Malacca strait to help search for a missing Malaysian airplane, the team’s spokesman Ibnu Haris said.

Suardipa pointed out that in terms of domestic and foreign tourist ar-rival to Lovina a year ago was noted to reach 3,083 people. The number of tourist arrival this year increased by 20 percent. As of the same period, the travelers visiting Lovina amounted to 4,380. “In terms of tourist visit, it indicates a fluctuation and is natural. This year, the tourist visit has in-creased 20 percent from the previous year,” he said.

According to Suardipa, the dolphin tourism becoming the leading attraction was still managed by tourism players with fishermen group at each village.

AntaraDENPASAR - Several foreign

scientists had studied the local environmental wisdom as prac-ticed by the Subak traditional agricultural irrigation organiza-tion in Bali.

“Among the foreign scientists were C. J. Grader who had studied the Subak form of irrigation in Jembrana in 1984 and Clifford Geertz in Tabanan, Badung and

Klungkung in 1959,” Prof Dr I Wayan Windia, the chairman of the Subak study center and a dean at the University of Udayana, said on Tuesday.

J. Stephen Lansing, an Ameri-can anthropologist, had also stud-ied the Subak system in Bangli district in 1991.

The foreign studies had re-ported many local customs and discussed the rationale for the

Subak irrigation system.Indonesian scientists who had

studied the Subak system, includ-ed Bagus (1971), Sutawan (1989 and 1991), Sushila (1987), Geriya (1985), Pitana (1993), Windia (2006) and Norken (2007), he added.

The local customs and tradi-tions that were incorporated in the Subak system include religious, cultural, ecological, economic,

legal, and technological and se-curity elements.

On June 2012, Subak was recognized by the UNESCO as a world heritage site.

The Subak has maintained an agricultural ecosystem for more than 1000 years. In Bali, the ancient system of water temples enables the Subak to coordinate its activities alongside entire river systems.

India asked to join hunt for missing planeAssociated Press Writer

(kmb26)

(kmb31)

The data collected in the secre-tariat of the Indonesia Hotels and Restaurants Association (PHRI) of Buleleng Chapter, indicated that Lovina area spread from Pemaron village (Buleleng) crossing Tukad-

mungga village, Anturan village, Kalibukbuk village (Buleleng) and Kaliasem village (Banjar subdis-trict). The coastal territories includ-ing the five villages stretch from the east to the west with the length of

about eight kilometers.Along with its development, the

tourist area does not only highlight the beauty of dolphin attraction. It is also supported by natural landscape and potential of pristine agrotour-

ism and bamboo handicraft center. Lovina tourist development is sup-ported by two buffer villages namely the Melaka Kayuputih village (Su-kasada subdistrict) and Tigawasa village (Banjar subdistrict).

Meanwhile, in terms of sup-porting infrastructure, the Lovina tourist area is supported by the pro-vision of adequate tourist accom-modation. Hotel facilities available in Lovina are ranging from cottages to five-star hotels. Similarly, other facilities such as the restaurant are also available offering various

menus that can pamper the tongue of visiting travelers.

Chairman of the PHRI Buleleng, Dewa Ketut Suardipa, said that Lovina tourist development was not as busy as the tourism devel-opment in Southern Bali. It had happened since the beginning of Bali managed the tourism potential. However, Lovina tourism players and local government continued to work hard to promote Lovina by making the dolphin an icon of tourism in Buleleng.

BULELENG - Lovina tourist object in Buleleng subdistrict has been well known since long time ago by foreign and domestic travelers. Since the region is popularized as the main tourist destination in North Bali, its development has ups and downs, chiefly the foreign and domestic tourist arrivals are fluctuating quite high. In addition, the development of dolphin tourist attrac-tion has long been undertaken by local fishermen. However, the operation of this tour package is determined by weather condition at sea and dolphin population on the high seas.
