“We’ve got five Haitian runners, 10 runners total, running for the team representing Haiti and our organiza-tion J/P HRO coming to the New York City Marathon — the marathon. So we’re really looking forward to it,” Penn said.

The 53-year old actor, who spoke to the Associated Press on Saturday night, expressed satisfaction that the organization continues to rebuild Haiti with its medical, relocation, structural and community development programs —but also that it brings hope to the island nation.

NEW YORK — Miley Cyrus cau-tioned viewers she wouldn’t be twerking on “Saturday Night Live.” But she com-manded the stage on this week’s edition of the NBC sketch comedy show, serving as both host and musical guest.

And she did some shimmying as an over-sexed Congresswoman Michele Bachmann in a parody video about the government shutdown.

Cyrus seized attention and criticism in August for her sexually charged MTV Video Music Awards performance, which featured the singer in scanty garb while exhibiting suggestive twerking gyrations.

During Saturday’s open, Cyrus made sport of the hubbub surrounding her racy display. She joked that she used to think twerking was cool, but changed her mind now that white people are doing it.

Besides participating in several sketches, she performed two songs. Her album, “Bangerz,” is out Tuesday.

see that great discipline that Haitians have and that great spirit and the ex-citement that they have visiting New York for the first time.”

Penn started the J/P Health Relief Organization after a catastrophic 7.0 magnitude earthquake ripped through Haiti in January 2010, killing more than 100,000. They set up camps for displaced residents and facilitated medical clinics. It continues to save lives and brings sustainable programs to benefit the nation. Penn acts as CEO and Chairman of the Board for the organization.

When asked if his efforts to make a meaningful and lasting impact in Hai-ti made him proud, Penn responded:

“I’ve got a group I’m very proud of and really inspired by. Let’s say I’ve been granted a fortunate ticket in.”

The two-time Oscar-winning ac-tor made the comments at the world premiere of his film, “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” at the New York Film Festival. Penn stars alongside writer-director Ben Stiller. The 26-mile (42-kilometer) New York Marathon takes place on Nov. 3.

EvEry Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Tabanan (Bali Post)—Silence of Bukit Catu hamlet, Can-

dikuning village, Baturiti, suddenly turned fussy, Friday (Oct 4). A hand grenade exploded in the garage of one of the houses. One of the residents was killed, while another was in critical condition due to the incident. It was still unknown what kind of grenade it was, including its size.

The death toll was Yesi Yuspa, 14, a local resident. The unfortunate teenager was killed instantly at the scene. His body was evacuated to Sanglah Hos-pital for an autopsy. Meanwhile, the injured victim, Komang Budiasa, 13, was also a local resident. Until Friday night, the victim still got intensive care in Tabanan Hospital. The victim suf-fered crashed wound on right temple and cheek. The explosion was audible by residents around 09:30 a.m. up to a radius of one kilometer. Hearing the explosion, residents began to suspect. They rushed for the source of explosion. Not long after, they found the victim ly-ing dead covered in blood. His head was crushed, his body was destroyed. The first victim was found slumped near a pickup truck parked in his garage.

“When I arrived, the victim was cov-ered in blood,” said the victim’s father, Mohamad Imron, 47. This man from Banyuwangi, East Java, did not know the chronological incident because he was working in a strawberry farm then. He just learned after being notified by the farm owner, Wayan Puja. Arriving at home, he saw his wife, Junaenah, was crying hysterically.

Imron claimed, his son who worked as a farm laborer had been complaining of pain for three days. At last, he took water near the geothermal drilling loca-tion for irrigating the farm. “I once saw him bringing a used package. But, I did not heed it,” he said. In the morning of the incident, the victim was left alone at home. Allegedly, when he was alone, the victim wanted to start a grenade and then exploded. Due to strong explo-sion, front side of the pickup truck was destroyed, while the roof of his garage

was also severely damaged. More tragically, the officers found the cut finger of victim within a radius of 100 meter. Position of the explosion was also mysterious. One of the residents told if the victim was found lying near the pickup. Another source said if the victim was in the pickup at the time of incident. The suspicion was supported by the discovery of the cut of the vic-tim’s body in the car seat.

After the incident, the Bali Police Bomb Squad came down to location and held a crime scene investigation. As a result, the officers found several items related to the grenade parts. “The results of crime scene investigation indicated if the exploding item belonged to hand grenade. However, it is still unknown for sure who is the owner and the explo-sive magnitude,” said Chief of Tabanan Police, Dekananto Eko Purnomo.

He described that certainty on the grenade was based on the findings of rings and pliers at the location. His party was still awaiting the results of the fo-rensic laboratory related to the incident. Information of the injured victim also recognized the grenade. The victim said if the grenade was found not far from his home. As observation of Bali Post while searching around the scene, the Bomb Squad also found traces of bullet packing box, including a piece of intact bullet.

Such incident became an interesting spectacle for residents. Hundreds of people thronged the scene. After the crime scene investigation, the residents burst to approach the severely damaged pick-up truck with license plate DK 9057 GF.

According to Headman of Candi-kuning, Made Mudita, the victim was known as a farm laborer. He was in charge of taking care of the farm and only attended school to fourth grade of elementary school. “We were also sur-prised why there was such an exploding grenade,” said Mudita. He suspected the exploding grenade was the remnant of the Army’s Special Forces (Kopas-sus) personnel having got training on the day before. (kmb30)

“We are proud of our work because it has been used for sou-venirs for delegates, let alone the heads of state in the APEC event. We feel to be honored because our work is appreciated. If possible, this moment can become a medium of promotion for our products so that the Bali handicraft product may also be enhanced for export orientation,” said Nyoman Sutapa, a crafter from Angantaka, Saturday (Oct 5).

Sutapa told the Garuda Wisnu statue used for the APEC 2013 souvenir had the height of 50 cm and the width of about 25 cm. It was made from prickly ash tree (Zanthoxylum rhetsa). Other than loved by many people, the wood was also chosen because it was believed to have an efficacy. For some people of Mengwi, spines of the tree were believed to have an efficacy to cure sore eyes (speckle in the eye).

Meanwhile, people living in mountainous area believed the wood could be taken advantage as lightning rod. Crafters did not find difficulty when working on the wood. No special treatment was required in the workmanship as they were used to do it. However, Sutapa admitted the time limit given to work on the product was short enough. The order was given on September 18. At that time, the crafters directly worked them on. A total of 30 statues could have been accomplished and packed properly. All statues had been delivered on October 2. “Meanwhile, we have to create all the Garuda Wisnu statues because we happen to have no stock. Here, we regularly make the statue of anglers and grandfather with a rooster cage,” said the owner of Parisudha art shop.

Mangupura (Bali Post)—The APEC Summit 2003 brought in blessing for a number of statue crafters from three

villages namely Jagapati, Angantaka and Sedang (JAS), Abiansemal subdistrict, Badung County. The craftsmen coalesced into the Association of SME Crafters (Asparinda) got the credence to make Garuda Wisnu statue as souvenir for the heads of state who attended the APEC Summit 2013. Aside from being proud, the crafters also hoped that APEC Summit could become an excellent international craft product promotion of Badung in particular and Bali in general.

souvenirs, Sutapa said, it originated from the display of the Garuda Wisnu statue in the showroom of Asparinda in the office of Badung County Government.

The Regent of Badung AA Agung Gde showed off the statue crafts to First Lady Ani Yudhoyono. Tit for tat, the encounter inspired the appointment of JAS crafters to make the garuda statue used for the APEC souvenirs.

Furthermore, Sutapa hoped his

party could reach a broader market-ing and the government could help promote the craft products more intensely. The government was also expected to continuously help the marketing of their products. “In Badung, we have made the MoU between the crafters and entrepre-neurs facilitated by local govern-ment. Hopefully, this effort can run sustainably and be improved to encourage the crafters to work better,” he said. (kmb25)

AntaraNUSA DUA - Economic ministers of the Asia Pacific Economic

Cooperation (APEC) have agreed to improve transparency and increase their nations’ resilience to deal with economic upheavals.

This was included as part of the joint statement issued by APEC eco-nomic ministers here on Saturday, following their meetings which began on Friday.

APEC ministers attending the APEC Ministerial Meeting, co-chaired by Indonesian foreign minister Marty Natalegawa and trade minister Gita Wirjawan, stated that improving economic resilience means creat-ing a regional capability to immediately revive economies and become a locomotive for global economic growth.

They also agreed on many reference policies translating the three main pillars of APEC 2013, defined as “Attaining Bogor Goals”, “Sustainable Growth with Equity” and “Promoting Connectivity.”

The agreement achieved with the Bogor Goals includes support of APEC members to join multilateral trade systems, the extension of trade liberalization and investment, promotion of global trade services, facili-tating investment, promoting environmentally-oriented growth, dialog in automotive and small business sectors, trade issues for the next generation, and deepening the Asia Pacific free-trade zone.

With regard to Sustainable Growth With Equity, APEC ministers have translated this into efforts, such as encouraging the increased role of small and medium businesses and the empowerment of women, easing financial access to economically-weakened families, as well as small and medium businesses, and promoting protection of workers and social security.

Other goals to be established based upon these pillars are the provision of health insurance, food resilience, marine cooperation development, sci-ence, technology and bio-technology development cooperation, develop-ment of sustainable forest management, extension of efforts in the fight against wildlife smuggling, development of renewable energy sources, energy efficiency and the fight against corruption.

With regard to promoting connectivity, APEC ministers agreed that cooperation is needed for the development of physical infrastructure, insti-tutions and connecting people in the Asia Pacific region. This is important so that Bogor Goals and APEC community visions could be realized.

APEC ministers also agreed to encourage the increasing of investment and infrastructure development, the creation of a framework for developing connectivity in the supply chain, investment and development of quality transportation infrastructures, and development of rules on good working practices through oriented coordination mechanisms.

Apart from this, they also agreed to develop customs procedures, regulations for border crossings and education in the border regions, facilitating natural disaster aid and increasing mobility of peoples in the APEC region, and promoting activities of joint efforts in academic circles of young entrepreneurs as part of efforts to realize connectivity among people in the Asia Pacific region.

The two leaders are also ex-pected to witness the signing of memorandums of understanding between the two countries.

Nieto and his wife, Angelica Rivera, arrived in Bali on Saturday for APEC Leaders Summit.

AntaraNUSA DUA - US Secretary of

State John Kerry said the US wishes to increase economic cooperation with Indonesia, which is seen as one of the APEC members with an economy that is growing at a quick pace.

“The US wishes to work more closely with Indonesia and other APEC countries,” Kerry said at a press conference on Saturday.

He said economic growth of more than six percent has made Indonesia one of the economies in Asia Pacific that has achieved significant growth, even while a number of countries are suffering slowdowns.

Kerry said Indonesia is one of the US’s most important partners because it has put in place transparent and ac-countable trade regulations.

“Indonesia has proven itself to be a significant partner for the US,” he said.

Indonesia, he said, is one of the largest exporters, with rich natural resources, and is considered a country contributing to overall growth in the Asia Pacific region.

US Trade Secretary Michael Fro-man, meanwhile, added that Indonesia is one of the world’s largest economies and also one of the key G20 member countries.

He said Indonesia has been playing a role as an emerging economy and in the global economic system.

“Indonesia will also be the host of the World Trade Organization meet-ing. This is about leadership in the international trade system,” he said.

Based on data from the Indonesian trade ministry, the country’s total trade with the US from January to March 2013 reached US$6.7 million, increas-ing 3.45 percent from US$6.49 million recorded in the same period last year.

Indonesia’s exports to the US in the

same period reached US$4.7, million while its imports from the US were recorded at US$1.9 million.

Regarding APEC, he said that it is a trade forum which will assist economic and development in the region.

He noted that the US is committed to deepening its cooperation with other APEC member countries, which he described as a region with fast eco-nomic growth.

“We are here to expand exports, promote economic growth and create jobs,” he said.

APEC, Froman said, represents 55 percent of the world’s per capita income and contributes 45 percent of global trade in goods and services.

He said the US has exported goods and services to APEC valued at US$1 trillion, which is more than 50 percent of US total exports and these exports have continue to sup-port the US manpower sector.

President RI hold talks wit Mexican counterpart

AntaraNUSA DUA - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono hold bilateral talks with his Mexican

counterpart, Enrique Pena Nieto, on Sunday ahead of Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit on Monday and Tuesday.

Also on Sunday, Yudhoyono will open an APEC CEO Summit, attend the launch of UN Sustainability Development Solution Network (UN SDSN) and meet with a Hong Kong delegation.

Twenty-one APEC members will

take part in the 25th APEC Summit. They are Australia, Brunei Darus-salam, Canada, Chile, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Peru, Rus-sia, Singapore, South Korea, Tai-

wan, Thailand, the United States, and Vietnam.

Founded in 1989, APEC held its first summit in Australia.

Indonesia once hosted an APEC Summit in Bogor in 1994 when APEC leaders were committed to achieving free and open trade and investment by 2010 for industrial-ized economies and by 2020 for developing economies.

APEC members agreed to pursue

this goal by further reducing barri-ers to trade and investment and by promoting the free flow of goods, services and capital.

These targets became known as the “Bogor Goals,” an ambitious manifestation of APEC’s common belief that free and open trade and investment are essential to realize the growth potential of the region and enhance economic and social outcomes for all APEC economies.

Kerry said the US wishes to increase eco-nomic cooperation with Indonesia, which is seen as one of the APEC members with an economy that is growing at a quick pace.

On Beijing’s biggest weekend of the year for sports so far, spectators at the China Open tennis tournament and an inaugural ladies golf tourna-ment pulled their shirts up over their faces and used masks and bandanas to try to avoid the noxious air.

At the Reignwood LPGA Classic, the first Ladies Professional Golf Association event held in China, tee times were delayed to allow some of the smog to dissipate, but some play-ers, including Germany’s Sandra Gal, still donned masks.

In another part of the city, spec-tators were also uneasy on the final day of the China Open, where the world’s No. 1 and 2 men’s tennis players, Novak Djokovic and Ra-fael Nadal, were playing each other Sunday afternoon, followed in the evening by Serena Williams and Jelena Jankovic in the ladies final.

In some areas of Beijing, vis-ibility dropped to less than 500 meters (yards) on Saturday night and Sunday morning, according to China’s National Meteorological Center. It said the haze hanging over a large area of northern China, including Hebei province, which

neighbors Beijing, and the port city of Tianjin would persist until Mon-day afternoon.

The oppressive smog in the capital sparked a high pollution alert from the U.S. Embassy, which monitors air quality. In an email to American citizens, it said its read-ings had averaged more than 300 on its air quality index in the 24 hours beginning Friday evening and more than 400 overnight Saturday. Anything over 301 on the U.S. En-vironmental Protection Agency scale is considered hazardous to health. It recommended people stay indoors and run air purifiers continuously.

The smog came during one of China’s peak travel times — the Oct. 1-7 holiday known as Golden Week, when hundreds of millions of Chinese travel. The holiday is characterized anyway by long lines of traffic and delayed journeys, com-plicated further Sunday by the partial closure, according to state media, of six inter-provincial expressways, including one linking Beijing and Shanghai. Nearly 30 highways were also restricted around the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei area.

WYNNEWOOD, Oklahoma — A tiger ripped up the left arm of a worker at a central Oklahoma animal park after the woman stuck her hand into the giant cat’s enclosure.

Joe Schreibvogel, owner of Garold Wayne Interactive Zoological Park in Wynnewood, said the woman was in surgery Saturday afternoon at an Oklahoma City hospital where doctors were trying to save her arm.

“He tore her arm up pretty bad,” Schreibvogel said. “Her entire arm was still attached. It was badly, badly damaged.” Co-workers quickly tended to the woman before she was airlifted to the hospital, he said.

“She pulled her own arm out. The tiger didn’t maul her. The tiger was in his cage, and she violated his space by sticking her arm into his space,” Schreibvogel said, adding that the park has a strict rule against introducing any body part into a wild animal enclosure.

Schreibvogel withheld the woman’s name because he hadn’t been able to contact her family. He said she is in her early 20s.

“She’s actually the supervisor of the cats. But when you work with these things every day, you tend to let your guard down and think they’re pets, that they’re like dogs. They’re not — they’re tigers,” he said. Schreibvogel said the tiger, a mixed breed that he rescued, is about 14 years old.

“He weighs over 400 pounds (but) never has ever showed a bit of aggression,” he said. Schreibvogel said the tiger may have thought the woman’s jacket was a toy or may have been attracted by the smell of the goose down. The tiger won’t be euthanized, Schreibvogel said.

At this point in time, how-ever, there is not a single U.S. Marine in the tropical northern city of Darwin, according to the Australian defense ministry. Two hundred Marines just finished their six-month tour and will not be re-placed until next year, when 1,150 Marines are due to arrive.

The original goal of station-ing 2,500 Marines there by 2017 remains in place, but the lack of a U.S. presence there two years after the policy was announced un-derlines questions about Washing-ton’s commitment to the strategic “pivot” to Asia.

President Barack Obama’s can-cellation of a trip this week to four Asian nations and two regional summits due to the U.S. govern-ment shutdown has raised further doubts over a policy aimed at re-invigorating U.S. military and

economic influence in the fast-growing region, while balancing a rising China.

While U.S. and Asian diplo-mats downplayed the impact of Obama’s no-show, the image of a dysfunctional, distracted Washing-ton adds to perceptions that China has in some ways outflanked the U.S. pivot.

“It’s symptomatic of the con-cern in Asia over the sustainability of the American commitment,” said Carl Baker, director of the Pacific Forum at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Hawaii.

As embarrassed U.S. officials announced the cancellations last week, Chinese President Xi Jin-ping was in Indonesia announcing a raft of deals worth about $30 billion and then in Malaysia to an-nounce a “comprehensive strategic

partnership”, including an upgrade in military ties.

He was en route to this week’s Asia-Pacific Economic Coopera-tion (APEC) summit in Bali and the East Asia Summit in Brunei, where Obama will no longer be able to press his signature trade pact or use personal diplomacy to support allies concerned at China’s assertive maritime expansion.

Since 2011, China has con-solidated its position as the larg-est trade partner with most Asian countries and its direct investments in the region are surging, albeit from a much lower base than Eu-rope, Japan and the United States. Smaller countries such as Laos and Cambodia have been drawn so strongly into China’s economic or-bit that they have been called “cli-ent states” of Beijing, supporting its stance in regional disputes.

Cairo - Egypt on Sunday braced for rival demonstrations called by supporters and opponents of deposed Islamist president Mohamed Morsi as it marks the 40th anniversary of the 1973 Arab-Israeli war.

The interior ministry warned it would “firmly confront” any violence at the demonstrations on Sunday, which aimed to converge at Cairo’s Tahrir Square, epicentre of the 2011 uprising against Hosni Mubarak.

Opponents of Morsi, who was ousted and jailed by the army on July 3, began gathering at the square from Saturday evening chanting pro-military slogans, an AFP correspondent reported.

Authorities deployed several armoured vehicles around the square and installed metal detectors at two entrances to allow people inside. All other entrances were sealed.

The 1973 conflict, known as the October War in the Arab world and the Yom Kippur War in Israel, is remembered proudly by the Egyptian army because it caught Israel by surprise. The war ultimately led to the recovery of the Sinai Peninsula in a 1979 peace treaty.

“The Egypt Anti-Coup Alliance repeats its call to all Egyptians to continue their protests in every part of Egypt, and to gather in Tahrir Square on Sunday, October 6, to celebrate the army of that victory and its leaders,” the pro-Morsi Islamist group led by the Muslim Brotherhood said Saturday.

Attempts by Islamists to reach Tahrir Square on Friday had sparked clashes with Morsi opponents and security forces in which four people were killed, making it the deadliest street fighting in more than a month.

It was unclear whether the dead were Islamists or their oppo-nents, but a medical official said none were security personnel. Ahead of Sunday’s demonstrations, the interior ministry warned against “attempts that may disturb the October 6 celebrations in Egypt,” state news agency MENA quoted it as saying.

“The ministry asserts its determination to firmly confront all violence and infringements of law by the Muslim Brotherhood supporters through their marches.”

KUALA LUMPUR - When then U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton declared two years ago “We are back to stay” as a power in Asia, the most dramatic symbol of the policy shift was the planned deployment of 2,500 U.S. Marines in northern Australia, primed to respond to any regional conflict.

All this time, the art of batik cloth is always created on cloth medium, unlike the innovation of bamboo artisans in Bangli. The art of batik having gained world-wide recognition as an Indonesian cultural heritage can be created on woven bamboo. No doubt, the home-made work of art can give added value and it has even pen-etrated the export market.

According to one of the batik crafters at Bunutin village, Anak Agung Oka Tirta, the process of making batik handicrafts was not

much different from that of batik art work in general. The tool in use was also the same, namely in the form of canting or wax pourer. However, the making of batik on bamboo craft required special skills and extra patience because it had an uneven texture.

To complete a piece of sokasi or oblation basket with batik motif, a craftsman would at least take one day. Although being relatively complicated, this work of art was in high demand. Other than local community, the product was also

favored by foreign consumers. A number of bamboo crafts com-

bined with batik art were products like sokasi or oblation basket, food container, masks and others. By the uniqueness, the price offered ranged from tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of rupiahs, depending on the motif, size and difficulty level of workmanship. Other than increasing the sal-ability, batik creations on bamboo craft could also become one of the preservation against the Indonesian cultural heritage. (ina)

Bangli (Bali Post)—Natural resource like bamboo poses one of the great potentials owned by Bangli County. Through cre-

ative hands, bamboo can be processed into woven products having high value. Moreover, many bamboo crafts are currently combined with the art of batik as carried out by some artisans at Bunutin village, Bangli. The art of batik is created on mixed media such as woven bamboo and wooden crafts.

Local govt obliged to provide everlasting land

governments to provide an ev-erlasting land that may not be converted into functions beyond the agriculture.

Director General of Enterprise

and Investment Development, Ministry of Agriculture, Jamil Musanif said that local govern-ment should establish farmland that could not be converted.

Moreover, the productive farm-lands should be protected be-cause if they were converted uncontrollably, it would then be difficult to obtain food stuff as daily staple.

“Nationally, the ministry has made a rule included in the Ev-erlasting Land Act, but where must be made and how wide the farmland should be will be left to each local government,” said Jamil Musanif in Jimbaran, Saturday (Oct 5).

He said the conversion of fertile farmland in Indonesia had reached alarming condition where it occurred to 50,000 to 100,000 hectares per year. Re-duction in the rice field area was feared to disrupt the food self-sufficiency. In Bali itself, within the period of 14 years, namely from 1997 to 2011, the reduc-tion in productive land reached 436 hectares, or 0.50 percent each year. In 1997, it happened to 87,849 hectares of produc-tive land and in 2011 to 81,744 hectares. “These agricultural is-sues will also be discussed in the APEC Summit,” he said.

According to him, to encour-age the agricultural sector, the Ministry of Agriculture also registered many distinctively re-gional superior products as geo-graphical indication products. As of January 2013, it was issued 14 certificates of geographical indications from various regions in Indonesia.

“The products that have got Geographical Indication (GI) cer-

tification are the Bali Kintamani Arabica coffee, Gayo Arabica coffee, Lombok water spinach, Krayan Adan rice, Bajawa Flores Arabica coffee and others. In Bali, we also propose the certi-fication of Tabanan red rice, Bali snake fruit and cashew nut,” he explained.

He explained the requirements to be met, among others, was having a special characteristic that the product only grew in one particular region. Registration of the geographical indication products would provide added value and benefits to stakehold-ers involved such as farmers and exporters.

“For consumers, the certificate of geographical indication at-tached to the product packaging signifies if the product is genuine. In other words, consumers will be protected from counterfeit goods if the packaging has the label of the geographical indication,” he explained.

He added that typical charac-teristics of the products happened due to geographical environment, including the factor of nature, human or combination of both factors so as to provide certain characteristics and quality of the goods produced.

Geographical Indication of a product posed a sign signifying the origin generated by geographi-cal and environmental factor such as nature, human and combination of both factors, giving particular characteristics and quality of the product yielded. (kmb27)

Hindu community in Bali has a unique performing art known as Calonarang. The performing art poses a dance-drama whose artists should master the elements of dance, music and vocal. A troupe is supported by tens of artists. Interestingly, almost all the dancers consist of ‘selected’ artists. In other words, they have superior talent, so that every performance can draw the attention of spectators.

Frequently, it is also graced by the contest of shakti power between the dancers and people having magical powers. It is commonly carried out in the ‘invitation’ scene, where the dancers invite people to get involved in a magical power contest. It is usually done by the player dancing the Rangda effigy. In this scene, it is filled with matebekan (stabbing kris dagger in the chest) performed by the other players against the Rangda.

In this session, the performing area will usually turn magical, horrific and creepy. If the dancers have come into trance, the stabbers will stab themselves with the kris dagger. The more horrific atmosphere happens when living players are given a mantra and then act as a dead person (corpse). Afterward, the body is consecrated (as in cremation). Then, they are taken to cemetery. Mystical atmosphere is strongly felt in the show at this scene.

Calonarang is indeed a special performing art that cannot be staged arbitrarily. However, after the develop-ment of tourism, the Calonarang is also staged for tourist entertainment. However, time and type of ceremony is not made specifically. AA Gde Raka, a religious phi-losopher, said the Calonarang dance-drama was actually a ritual event where the sanctified effigies in the form of Rangda and Barong venerated were taken down and danced. The Calonarang itself was performed on the piodalan (temple anniversary) in the Dalem Temple and

other temples. Players getting involved in the Calonarang attraction were those specifically having high spiritual knowledge and the arts.

According to him, the story of Calonarang was insepa-rable from the concept of rwa bhineda or basic dualism such as the quality of good and bad being always side by side. The Calonarang story was taken from a fairy tale on a widow named Walu Nateng Girah from Girah village, Kediri. Walu meant widow, Nateng (Queen) and Girah was the name of a village in Kediri, East Java. Therefore, Walu Nateng Girah meant a widow queen from Girah village. Walu Nateng Girah is a disciple of left school representing the adharma. Meanwhile, the King Airlangga is the follower of goodness representing the dharma. “It has significance that in this life good and bad qualities are inseparable,” he said.

In that struggle, none of Mpu Bharadah and Na-teng Girah won symbolizing that good and bad was inseparable. The staging of Calonarang performance was not entertainment art, but due to influence of globalization, many Calonarang performances then led to profane art, too.

According to Gde Raka, the word Calonarang was derived from the word arang meaning the ash related to plague caused by Nateng Girah where the Girah village was like to have been transformed into ashes because many people were sick and died.

Calonarang performance was usually commenced with the presence of barong dance, telek dance and followed by the emergence of young ladies. The next scene told about Walu Nateng Girah and her followers practicing black magic getting involved in a struggle against the forces of King Airlangga belonging to white school. (BTN)

Markus Jerewon, Yuvensius Goo and Rofinus Yanggam scaled the mission’s walls to get inside to demand Australia, the United States and Japan pressure Indonesia over rights abuses in the restive Papua region.

“It was not difficult getting in. We climbed a tree next to a wall and then jumped in,” Yanggam told AFP by phone.

“The APEC summit is a golden opportunity for us to let the world know what’s going on in Papua. We want the leaders from these countries to pressure Indonesia to release Papuan political prisoners.”

Yanggam also called for the international media to be al-lowed free access to Papua, where militants have for decades fought a low-level insurgency on behalf of the mostly ethnic Melanesian population there.

Jakarta keeps a tight grip on Papua and foreign journalists are normally banned from reporting in the region.

“We came in peace. We are not troublemakers,” he added.

Yanggam said the trio left the consulate in the Balinese capital Denpasar voluntarily, and were not questioned by police or arrested.

Bali police said they have “no information” on the case, its spokesman Hariadi told AFP.

“The Australian consulate have not reported the matter to us. We are still investigating the case,” he said.

Indonesian security forces are regularly accused of abusing Papuan villagers and torturing political activists in Papua.

Indonesia took over the region from former colonial power the Netherlands in 1963, but denies allegations of systematic human rights abuses.

In a video of the three activists released online, Yanggam said at least 55 political prisoners were in several prisons in Papua, including independence leader Filep Karma who is serving a 15-year sentence.

“The Papuan political (prisoners) did not do any violence. The prisoners suffer a lot behind Indonesian bars,” he said.

Demanding that foreign visitors be allowed to “travel freely” in Papua, the activist said: “This restriction has taken place since 1963. Fifty years is enough. We need to be open like Bali.”

Australia’s foreign office said that “three individuals from Indonesia’s Papua provinces delivered a protest letter at the Australian Consulate-General in Bali this morning to Australia’s Consul-General,” making no mention of their method of arrival.

“The three men left the Consulate voluntarily before 7 am,” a foreign office spokesman told AFP.

Australian Trade Minister Andrew Robb told reporters at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation meeting in Bali that the activists had “left voluntarily so the matter’s been resolved”.

The trio had ended their protest letter with the phrase “we seek refuge and plead for our safety” -- but Robb said they had not sought asylum.

The incident came ahead of Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott’s arrival in Bali for the summit on Monday.

In their letter, the men demanded that Abbott, Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and US Secretary of State John Kerry pressure Indonesia on Papuan rights.

“We want these leaders to persuade the Indonesian government to treat Papuan people better,” it said, de-manding the release of political prisoners who had “com-mitted no crime”.

AntaraNUSA DUA - Indonesian Presi-

dent Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has invited all CEOs in the APEC CEO Summit to invest in Indone-sia as one of the resilient countries in the Asia-Pacific region.

“In my capacity as the chief salesperson of Indonesia Inc, as a country, I invite you all to seize the business and invest-ment opportunities in Indonesia,” President Yudhoyono said in his keynote speech to the opening of APEC CEO Summit in Nusa Dua on Sunday.

According to Yudhoyono, APEC has become an engine of global growth and economic recovery as it holds a 40 percent share of global trade and invest-ment.

Indonesia, in particular, has a stable economic growth of average 6 percent in the past few years, rooted democratization, expanding

middle class, and major bureau-cratic reform, said Yudhoyono.

He said Indonesia and APEC should work together to address the challenges of global rivalry to prevent protectionism, intensify investment, create job opportuni-ties and develop infrastructures.

“We have to also empower women, small-medium enterprises and improve connectivity in order to achieve economic inclusion towards sustainable economic growth with equity,” he said.

The APEC CEO Summit was initiated by APEC Business Ad-visory Council (ABAC) to com-pound the global private sector opinion towards APEC leaders policy, on October 6 to 7.

On October 7, there will be APEC CEO and Leaders meeting to report the recommendations for the 21 APEC Leaders as the result of full-year ABAC discussions and meetings.

Roberto Azevedo urged the 21-member Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) grouping to throw its weight behind the nego-tiations so that the WTO can agree a deal in time for its ninth ministe-rial meeting in early December in Indonesia’s Bali island.

“Now we are in need of support as much as ever,” Azevedo said at a news conference after days of fervent diplomacy, including speaking to foreign and trade min-isters at an APEC plenary session to drive home his point.

“We hope that by coming here, I would have given the message to ministers of APEC of where we are and how importantly we need the engagement from capitals and from the ministers themselves.”

Differences over the conces-sions needed have led to clashes

notably between China, the Euro-pean Union, India and the United States, leading to a gridlock in the so-called Doha Round of global trade talks since 2008.

However, the most deadlocked portions of the Doha agenda have been put aside and countries are focusing talks on areas where agreement is possible, namely trade facilitation, agriculture and development issues.

Azevedo said agreement in these areas at the December meeting in Bali could break the gridlock and allow the WTO to discuss other issues.

“We are making progress but not fast enough. We need to be quicker and we need ministers to engage,” he said Saturday.

“I’m very positive. What we have before us on the table is do-

able,” he added.“I have absolutely no doubt in

my mind that we can reach this. We are clearly within reach.”

Although the areas under nego-tiation are limited, the gains can be enormous, Azevedo said, citing estimates showing that the easing trade constraints could result in savings of up to a trillion dollars worldwide.

US Trade Representative Mi-chael Froman also told reporters in Bali he was hopeful a deal would be reached in December.

“I am pleased to announce that there is a hopeful sign this week of our ability to work collectively together to solve problems and make progress in the WTO,” he said.

“If we fail, it will be hard to see how we further that agenda.”

NUSA DUA - The impacts of the US government shutdown are cas-cading into the business sector and into vital collection of economic data, Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker warned Sunday.

The first shutdown in 17 years has directly affected hundreds of thousands of government employees, but Pritzker said companies were also starting to hurt.

“The shutdown is not good for business. It’s not good for the econ-omy,” Pritzker told reporters at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum on the Indonesian is-land of Bali, which President Barack Obama has been forced to skip.

“And we need to move in with the business of doing business in the United States. So, I am hopeful this

gets resolved soon. It’s obviously having an impact.”

Pritzker said one big problem was businesses could no longer access vital data about the economy that is normally posted on the commerce department’s website.

But the website has been taken offline because staff who run it are not working.

“We’re a huge source of data for American business and that is a problem... It’s affecting businesses and it’s affecting their ability to get data,” she said.

Pritzker recounted the story of her son, an analyst in New York, who could not access retail sales data that is normally accessible online.

“He said: ‘I need retail sales num-bers and your website is not function-ing right now,’” Pritzker said.

Nevertheless, Pritzker said she

was an optimist and believed a solution to the shutdown would be achieved soon.

The US government closed all but its essential operations on Tuesday when Republican lawmakers refused to approve money for government operations without first delaying or defunding the new health care law, commonly known as Obamacare.

Obama is refusing to negotiate with Republicans over the budget issues until they pass a temporary bill to reopen the government, and has abandoned a planned tour of Asia taking in the APEC summit while the crisis plays out.

He said they must also agree to raise the $16.7 trillion US statutory borrowing limit -- without which Washington could default on its debts for the first time ever starting on October 17.

While many have largely with-stood the ravages of man and nature, haphazard renovation work has also seen new temples built on the foundations of crum-bling structures, and experts say they bear little resemblance to the originals. “Several hundred monuments have been completely rebuilt. It has obviously damaged the historical landscape,” architect Pierre Pichard, a former UNESCO consultant, told AFP.

“It is totally contrary to what is accepted internationally in terms of good practice.” Pichard helped re-store the temples after a huge earth-quake struck the region in central Myanmar in 1975, but was forced to leave the site in the early 1990s when the rulers effectively closed the country to the outside world.

After asking Buddhists for donations, the junta then started rebuilding the temples, many of which were just piles of bricks. Around 2,000 have so far been renovated, many with hastily done stone and plaster work, us-ing bright orange bricks and other modern materials.

A huge number of trees have also been planted across the vast plain dotted with pagodas and temples. “One of the character-istics of Bagan in the past was to be able to see hundreds of monu-ments in the middle of fields, and now we see them less,” said Pichard.

“These trees are an aberra-tion in terms of the environment because the climate is very dry and they need to be watered dur-

ing the dry season.” Today new building works have been halted, but some structures are still be-ing renovated, and archaeologists have been allowed back into the country to oversee the work.

Experts warn that much of the damage cannot be reversed, and could threaten Bagan’s chances of winning World Heritage sta-tus. ‘Waiting for the next earth-quake’

One engineer who worked at the site after the 1975 earthquake, but stopped when the foreign ex-perts left, said a lot of the restora-tion work was done quickly and cheaply to maximise the profits of local building firms. “People donated to get a close relationship to the generals,” he told AFP on condition of anonymity.

Bagan - The spires of Bagan have survived wars, earthquakes and centuries of tropical sun, but in recent years Myanmar’s ancient capital has faced a distinctly modern threat -- scaffolding and cement. The temples, some of which are around 1,000 years old, are one of the country’s most treasured religious sites and a top attraction for foreign tourists flocking to the country as it emerges from decades of military rule.

London - The parents of missing British girl Madeleine McCann said on Sunday they were “greatly encouraged” by new information about the disappearance of their daughter on holiday in Portugal in 2007.

Kate and Gerry McCann said they were hopeful there would be developments from a major appeal based on “substantive” new infor-mation which is to be broadcast on a BBC television programme on October 14.

“We are greatly encouraged by new information coming to light with pieces of the jigsaw now fitting together,” the McCanns said in a statement.

“We are really hopeful that the forthcoming appeal on Crimewatch will bring further new evidence which will take us a step closer to finding Madeleine and to bringing those responsible for her abduction to justice.”

A three-year-old actress will play Madeleine in the reconstruction on the Crimewatch programme.

British police said Friday that analysis of mobile phone data from thousands of people who were in the Portuguese resort of Praia da Luz when Madeleine McCann disappeared could provide a new lead. They are also investigating 41 potential suspects, although no arrests have been made.

Lampedusa - Divers in Italy resumed the grim search for bodies Sunday after a shipwreck in which over 300 African refugees are feared to have died, as a government minister called for an easing of tough immigration rules. Integration Minister Cecile Kyenge said she planned to triple the available accommodation in asylum centres to cope with the growing influx of illegal immigrants flocking to Europe, often on treacherous sea voyages.

The operation to recover more bodies from the wreck on top of the 111 already found had been suspended since Friday because of rough seas off the remote island of Lampedusa where Thursday’s tragedy un-folded. Fire brigade, navy, border patrol, coast guard and police divers were all taking part, limiting their dives to six or seven minutes because the wreck is on the seabed at a depth of 47 metres (154 feet).

“The search has resumed,” Leonardo Ricci, a spokesman for the emergency services, told AFP. There is a plan to raise the corpse-filled wreck, which is less than a kilometre (about half a mile) from the shore of the remote outcrop, Italy’s southernmost territory and a major entry point for illegal migrants entering the European Union.

Kyenge, who visited the island on Sunday, said the current 8,000 spaces for refugees in Italy had to increase. “I am planning to bring the number of bed spaces first to 16,000 and then to 24,000,” said Kyenge. She also called for reform of an immigration law that considers all ir-regular migrants suspects in the crime of “clandestinity” and punishes anyone accused of facilitating their landings.

“The law on immigration cannot be punitive. The migratory flux has fundamentally changed. We have to understand it and change our laws,” she said. Kyenge, who has faced racist abuse as Italy’s first black min-ister, said that previously most of the arrivals were economic migrants, but that now they were mostly refugees fleeing war and persecution.

French Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault has called for a meeting of European countries on border management following the tragic shipwreck. Italy has requested that the refugee influx be put on the agenda of a meeting of European interior ministers in Luxembourg on Tuesday and of a summit of EU leaders at the end of the month.

European Affairs Minister Enzo Moavero said there was an “unjus-tifiable asymmetry” between the mobilisation of EU states in the eco-nomic crisis and the lack of coordination over immigration. European Commission president Jose Manuel Barroso is due to visit Lampedusa on Wednesday, Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta announced.

JAKARTA - While observers bemoaned US President Barack Obama’s decision to cancel his visit to Asia, at least one group was happy -- hardline Muslims protesting against him in the Indonesian capital Friday.

The president’s change of plans “is a victory for the Muslim community and it was surely with the help of God that Obama cancelled his trip,” said Khoirul Amri, one of more than 500 Muslim radicals demonstrating outside the US embassy in Jakarta.

Obama had been due to attend the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit on the Indo-nesian resort island of Bali next week, but cancelled his trip late Thursday due to the US government shutdown.

A White House statement also announced that he would miss the East Asia summit in Brunei afterwards, a decision that came after he had also cancelled plans to visit Malaysia and the Philippines due to the budget impasse.

Analysts have warned the decision could dent the US “pivot” to Asia -- Obama’s effort to redirect

US military and diplomatic muscle towards the fast-rising region.

But the Muslim radicals from group Hizbut Tahrir welcomed the move at their anti-Obama protest, which was planned before the president changed his schedule.

They learned of Obama’s decision beforehand, but decided to press ahead with their protest to show opposition to the president and his policies, and APEC itself.

“His capitalist government will continue to steal Indonesian natural resources through their invest-ment projects,” the group’s spokesman Ismail Yusanto told AFP after the protest.

“APEC is an American tool to strengthen its economic colonisation of Indonesia,” one protester shouted to the crowd, who brandished banners that read: “Reject Obama, the destroyer of Muslim na-tions”.

“APEC will pave the way for the American gov-ernment to steal our rich natural resources.”

The APEC leaders’ summit begins on Monday, with US efforts to shape far-reaching new trade rules for the Asia-Pacific region set to dominate.

Anti-corruption officials arrested Akil Mochtar, the constitutional court’s chief justice, on Wednesday after allegedly catching him be-ing handed a bribe by a businessman and a lawmaker at his Jakarta home.

The businessman and MP and three other people have been detained alongside Mochtar, 52, in a case that the country’s anti-graft agency says is linked to a disputed local poll. Mochtar is alleged to have received more than $300,000 in bribes.

It is just the latest high-profile graft case in Indonesia after the recent arrest of the chief energy regulator on suspicion of bribery and the jailing of the former top traffic police officer for 10 years for cor-ruption.

But Mochtar’s case has raised the greatest concerns as it involves the constitutional court, which along with the anti-graft agency was considered one of the country’s cleanest and most incorruptible public institutions.

It has provoked deep soul-searching in Indonesia, with the Jakarta Globe newspaper lamenting that Mochtar’s arrest “threatens to bring down the very foundation of the country’s legal system and democ-racy”.

“This arrest is sad because Indonesians have had a lot of trust in this court,” Danang Widoyoko, from NGO Indonesia Corruption Watch, told AFP.

“Indonesia has failed to clean up public institutions, we’ve failed to put them in order.”

One of the court’s main roles is to rule on electoral disputes. It also hears cases about the constitution and rules on any attempt to impeach the president.

Indonesia is consistently ranked one of the most corrupt countries in the world.

In Transparency International’s annual Corruption Perceptions Index, Indonesia last year came 118th out of 176 countries and territories. A number one ranking means the least corrupt.

And it is not just high-ranking officials who are accused of taking kickbacks -- corruption is endemic at all levels and is widely viewed as having crippled the public sector.

From paying police small amounts for minor traffic offences to im-migration officials extorting bribes from foreigners at airports, graft is part of everyday life in Indonesia, critics say.

Indonesia has made efforts to tackle the problem over the past decade, in particular with the establishment of powerful anti-graft agency the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK).

The KPK, which has been operating since 2003, has been granted extraordinary powers, including wire tapping suspects and probing bank accounts, and has succeeded in sending top officials and busi-nesspeople to prison.

But the arrest of Mochtar has triggered a flood of complaints that this is not enough, and that punishments need to be harsher.

“This corruption case involving the chief of the constitutional court is proof once again that current punishments are doing nothing to deter the corrupt,” said newspaper Media Indonesia in an editorial.

The first chief judge of the constitutional court, which was estab-lished in 2001, even went as far as to say Mochtar should face death by firing squad.

“Under the law, corruption is not punishable by death, but the (pros-ecutors) should still recommend it,” said Jimly Asshiddiqqie.

JAKARTA - The shock arrest of one of Indonesia’s top judges for alleged bribery has highlighted the failure of efforts to clean up the country’s corruption-riddled public institutions and prevent graft at the highest levels, analysts say.

In addition, Les Village is also famous for its very amazing beach with its magnificent underwater world view.

Located some 90 kilometers north of Denpasar, Les is blessed with a majestic waterfall and rich underwater scenery at its beach.

The best way to reach Les is by rented or private car or motorcycle, so visitors can stop where they want to take photos.

The shortest route from Denpasar to Les is through Gianyar and Kintamani, where visitors can stop to enjoy the wonderful Lake Batur and mountain views while sip-ping hot Balinese coffee outside Pura Puncak Panulisan, a temple.

The waterfall is about 1 kilometer from the village’s main road. Visitors can park at the entrance gate, where a few shops sell snacks and souvenirs, before walking along a path to an open area next to a wide river, with a small stream of water and huge rocks.

After crossing the river, a similar footpath leads to the waterfall.

The 30-meter-high waterfall has a perfect slope so the water from the river jumps from one rock to another before eventually hitting the bottom of the land more gently.

Visitors can stand under the waterfall and enjoy the sensation of a natural massage of the water pounding on their head, neck and back while trying to become one with the surroundings and listening to the great voice of the waterfall.

Even two safety-car periods, the emergence of a truck on the circuit mid-race and the incinera-tion of his teammate’s car were not enough to put off the German, who made it a hat-trick of wins in Korea, and a fourth successive victory overall.

The Red Bull ace led through-out to win by 4.2 seconds ahead of the Lotus pair Kimi Raikkonen and Romain Grosjean.

Nearest title rival Fernando Alonso was sixth, stretching Vet-tel’s lead in the championship to 77 points with only five races re-maining, and he could wrap up the title at next weekend’s Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka.

“Even though it looks very good for us, it’s still not over,” Vettel said. “I’m not trying to think about it to be honest, I’m focusing more on the present.

“I am really enjoying things at the moment, we have a great team and we are having a great time as well.”

Sauber’s Nico Hulkenberg put in a superb defensive drive over the last 17 laps by holding off a queue of world champions behind him after the second safety-car period ended, finishing fourth to equal his career best.

Mercedes driver Lewis Ham-ilton was fifth, just holding off Alonso on the last lap. Mercedes Nico Rosberg took seventh by passing eighth-placed Jenson Button of McLaren in the closing stages. Ferrari’s Felipe Massa was ninth and McLaren’s Sergio Perez tenth.

YEONGAM, South Korea — Red Bull driver Sebastian Vettel’s relentless push toward a seemingly inevitable fourth-straight Formula One drivers’ championship continued with a victory at the Korean Grand Prix on Sunday.

Reuters Novak Djokovic won his fourth Chi-

na Open title in five years on Sunday, prevailing 6-3 6-4 in the final against Rafael Nadal who will replace him as the men’s new world number one on Monday.

The Serb continued his love affair in Beijing, improving his tournament re-cord to 19-0 after brushing aside Nadal in an hour and 27 minutes to halt his run of three defeats against the Spaniard.

Nadal had to reach the final in the tournament to displace Djokovic from the top ranking and the issue was put to rest on Saturday when Tomas Berdych retired with a back injury in his semi-final against the Spaniard.

The 26-year-old Djokovic stamped his authority on the title match early, racing to a 3-0 lead in the first set and never allowing the Spaniard, who went into the match unbeaten on hard courts this year, to stage a comeback.

He broke Nadal in the first game of the second set and clearly looked the better player, hitting winners almost at will.

Such was the Serb’s domination that the 27-year-old Nadal, who boosted his grand slam singles tally to 13 this year by winning the French and U.S. Opens, failed to create a single break point op-portunity in the whole match.

Djokovic had also won the tourna-ment in 2009, 2010 and 2012, while missing out in 2011 through injury.

Casey Stoner said Honda’s production MotoGP racer exceeded his expectations following a rain-hit test at Motegi. The two-time champion tested the bike, and its factory equivalent, as part of his ongoing development work with Honda.

And while rain meant the first day was entirely washed out, Stoner said his day two running was eas-ily enough to convince him of the production bike’s potential. “Unfortunately the weather played a big role in this test which was a little frustrating not to be able to share the workload over the two days,” Stoner said.

“We tried the production bike which was more impressive than I predicted. “It had a similar feeling to the RCV [factory bike] but with a little less power and a different feeling in engine braking.

“With some small modifications I believe this bike will be competitive and I look forward to the next test with it. “In general it was a good, but busy day.”

Stoner said he had also helped Honda evaluate some substantial upgrades to its factory bike, adding: “We started with the current RCV, trying to find a base setting and then work from there.

“We had two variations of chassis’ to try and some big modifications and improvements in my opinion.”

This year’s current Moto2 points leader Scott Red-ding signed a deal to race a Honda production bike run by the satellite Gresini squad next year.

Spanish leader Barcelona, mean-while, didn’t miss the injured Lio-nel Messi as it cruised by Valladolid 4-1 at home with Neymar scoring once and setting up one of Alexis Sanchez’s two goals.

At 1-1, Levante’s Nabil El Zhar grabbed what looked to be the winner in the 86th, but Madrid substitute Alvaro Morata stepped up to level in the 90th.

Still facing what would have been a costly draw, Ronaldo’s last-gasp strike hit both a defender and the post before settling into the net to crush the hosts’ hopes of taking a point.

“When Madrid plays football, it only needs five minutes to win a game,” Madrid first-year coach Carlo Ancelotti said.

This was Ronaldo’s second win-ner for Madrid on the last shot of the game in the last seven days after he netted a penalty six minutes after fulltime to grab a 2-1 win at Elche last Saturday.

The Portugal forward has seven goals in league play - one less than Messi and Atletico Madrid’s

Diego Costa - and 12 goals in 10 games in all competitions this sea-son. The victory put Madrid back in third place, five points behind Barcelona and two points behind Atletico before it hosts Celta Vigo on Sunday.

It also saved Ancelotti from even more pressure following the loss to Atletico last weekend. Although his team’s lackluster performance through most of the game will likely earn him more criticism.

“People need to be patient,” Morata said about the Madrid sup-porters who jeered Ancelotti in the last two home games. “There have been a lot of changes recently. We will play better, for sure.”

Barcelona extended its club re-cord with an eighth win in as many games to start the league under new coach Gerardo Martino. Madrid holds the league milestone of nine wins to start the season in 1968. Alexis’ long blast in the 14th can-celed out Javi Guerra’s 10th-minute opener for Valladolid.

Xavi Hernandez slotted in Bar-celona’s second in the 52nd before

Neymar set up Alexis in the 64th. Alexis then returned the favor by generously passing back for Ney-mar to net his goal in the 70th.

“Neymar didn’t put on a Messi mask, each one plays his own game,” Alexis told GOL TV. “I don’t think that the fact Messi isn’t here gives us more freedom. Without Leo we have more work because with him everything is easier.”

Elsewhere, Real Sociedad lost its second game this week in agonizing fashion, when Rayo Vallecano substitute Jonathan Viera won and converted an 89th-minute penalty. Sociedad lost in injury time at Bayer Leverkusen in the Cham-pions League on Tuesday.

Elche got its second straight victory thanks to forward Ferran “Coro” Corominas’ two goals in a 2-1 win over visiting Espanyol.

Without the injured Gareth Bale, Madrid could do very little to disarm Levante’s stingy defense in the first half at a Ciutat de Valencia Stadium where it had lost in two of its previous three visits.

PARIS - Big-money buy James Rodriguez finally delivered after a mediocre start to the season, creating both goals as Monaco went three points clear at the top of Ligue 1 with a 2-1 home win over St Etienne on Saturday.

Rodriguez left Porto for a trans-fer fee of 45 million euros ($61.18 million) in the close season but had only started two previous games for Monaco. Yannick Ferreira-Carrasco collected the Colombian forward’s defence-splitting pass in the 15th minute before coolly slot-ting the ball past keeper Stephane Ruffier.

“It was easy for me, I just had to poke the ball home. It was an extraordinary pass,” Ferreira-Carrasco told Canal Plus. Mo-naco captain Eric Abidal said: “We knew he (Rodriguez) was a technically-gifted player.”

Romain Hamouma levelled for St Etienne four minutes into the

second half with a low cross-shot. Max Gradel almost put the visi-tors in front in the 84th minute but keeper Danijel Subasic denied the striker from close range.

Lucas Ocampos then grabbed the winner for Monaco three min-utes later, keeping his composure to convert a fine cross from Rodri-guez. Rodriguez also went close to a stoppage-time goal when Ruffier palmed away the 22-year-old’s long-range free kick.

St Etienne, seventh with 13 points from nine matches, have now lost three of their last four home games. “We lack character, we need to question ourselves. Our first half was terrible,” said Hamouma.

Paris St Germain, second on 18 points, travel to arch-rivals Olympique Marseille on Sunday minus injured centre back Thiago Silva and forward Jeremy Menez who has been left out for disciplin-ary reasons. Marseille are third with 17 points from eight games.

SAO PAULO — Fans climbed a fence and jumped onto the field to escape the overcrowded stands during a second-division football match Saturday in one of Brazil’s World Cup host cities.

The chaotic scene took place at the Frasqueirao Stadium in the northeastern city of Natal, delaying the match between ABC and Palmeiras for nearly an hour as authorities tried to

clear the crowd. No serious injuries were reported.

Children and women cried as they tried to get away from a crowd of fans packed near one of the stadium’s entrances.

Authorities were investigating whether more than 16,000 tickets were sold for the game, the maxi-mum permitted at the venue.

World Cup matches in Natal will be played at the new Arena das Dunas Stadium, which is expected to be completed in December.

BARCELONA, Spain — Cristiano Ronaldo scored deep in injury time to cap Real Madrid’s incredible 3-2 comeback victory at Levante on Saturday, when his team went from losing, to drawing, and finally to winning in the last five minutes.

Moyes hopeful lure of Man United enough to keep Januzajloan by Moyes before impressing during this year’s pre-season.

Alongside Rooney, United’s Dutch striker Robin van Persie is not easily overshadowed but Janu-zaj did exactly that at Sunderland, displaying calmness on the ball and deadly accuracy with both feet to earn his side a much-needed victory.

A couple of top European clubs are said to be interested in Januzaj but Moyes believes the lure of being a star at Manchester United would be enough to keep him.

“I’m not too worried about that because I think every young boy wants to play for Manchester United,” Moyes told Sky Sports. “I’ve always thought that. If I was a young player I don’t see anywhere else better than Man-chester United to go.

“He’s going to be a great talent, a special talent. He hit goals, he has ability on the ball...but we’ll keep his feet on the ground here, we won’t let him get ahead of himself.”

Born in Belgium to Kosovan-Albanian parents and with links to Turkey and Serbia, Januzaj is eligible for a number of countries so he is a young man with club and country decisions ahead of him.

Januzaj’s goal-scoring perfor-mance led former United goal-keeper Peter Schmeichel to label him “something special” while mid-fielder Michael Carrick believes his young team mate can be “anything he wants to be.”

“He’s (Januzaj) done it on the big stage now,” Carrick was quoted as saying on Manchester United’s website (www.manutd.com).

AS Roma forward Francesco Totti scores on a penalty kick during the Serie A soccer match between Inter Milan and Roma at the San Siro stadium in Milan, Italy, Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013.

lorossi five points clear of Napoli and Juventus, which each play on Sunday. With new manager Rudi Garcia clearly leaving his mark on a squad that missed out on Europe last season with a sixth-place fin-ish, Roma has scored 20 goals and conceded just one.

“This squad’s continuity is the greatest thing,” Totti said. “Win-

ning seven straight matches isn’t easy. ... I don’t think anyone ex-pected this start to the season. “But the club put the players in place and when you have the right frame of mind good things happen.”

It was the first loss this season for an Inter squad that had also impressed up to this point. The Nerazzurri are seven points back.

Totti, who recently extended his contract for two more seasons, put Roma ahead 18 minutes in at the San Siro with a powerful and precise shot from 21 meters then doubled the lead with a penalty in the 39th after Gervinho was tripped, even though it appeared the foul oc-curred just outside the area.

The two goals gave Totti 230 for

his Serie A career. He is second on the all-time list behind Silvio Piola, who has 274. Alessandro Florenzi made it 3-0 in the 44th, finishing off a swift counterattack after being set up by Totti and Kevin Strootman.

Inter thought it pulled one back in the 66th when Andrea Ranoc-chia headed in but the defender was whistled for a foul on Roma goalkeeper Morgan De Sanctis, who clearly had possession first as the two players leaped up to the ball.

Roma could have had a fourth goal when the speedy Gervinho ran clear in the 73rd but Inter goalkeeper Samir Handanovic did well to deny him. Roma ended with 10 men after Federico Balzaretti, who scored the winning goal in last month’s derby with Lazio, picked up his second yellow card in the 79th.

Inter’s best chance turned out to be a shot off the post from Fredy Guarin in the 25th. Earlier, Atal-anta won 1-0 at Chievo Verona to move into the top half of the table, 12 points behind Roma.

Argentine forward Maximiliano Moralez scored in the 16th minute with an acrobatic shot for his first goal in 30 matches.

A minute of silence was ob-served before both matches to mourn the 100-plus African mi-grants killed in a shipwreck off the Italian island of Lampedusa on Thursday.

(ina)

Batik creation on bamboo cane work

(kmb27)

(kmb25)

“We’ve got five Haitian runners, 10 runners total, running for the team representing Haiti and our organiza-tion J/P HRO coming to the New York City Marathon — the marathon. So we’re really looking forward to it,” Penn said.
