Cable reliability is often a critical factor. Manufacturers, purchasers, installers and users must be able to demonstrate cables have been designed, manufactured and installed for their intended service life. If a failure does occur, precisely establishing a root cause and a mitigation strategy is key in reducing cost and improving future reliability. For 90 years Edif ERA has provided clients worldwide with independent and authoritative cable consultancy services supported by extensive UK in-house laboratories for cable inspections, testing and research. Our work covers all aspects of power cables; optimising cable design, materials selection, procurement support, advice and supervision of manufacture, testing and installation and remnant life assessment. These services contribute to significantly reducing both CAPEX and OPEX costs for our clients across the lifecycle of cable systems.

Cable system design

Edif ERA designs optimal cable systems for maximum reliability and lowest cost. This is achieved by performing cable rating studies to IEC standards and using FEA modelling techniques to accurately size cables. The design of suitable bonding arrangements is carried out for cable routes, taking into consideration induced voltages, circulating currents and magnetic fields. Thermomechanical calculations are also carried out to ensure the cable system can withstand operational and short circuit forces.

Design assurance

Inadequate cable system design can lead to costly project delays and failures. Our engineers will validate your design, performing gap analysis to ensure it is fully compliant with standards and client requirements and that it is suitable for the intended application.

Cable sourcing and procurement

Identifying the best procurement option for your projects requires first-hand knowledge of materials, manufacturing technology and testing used on cables and accessories. Our engineers have cable manufacturing experience which allows them to accurately specify technical and purchasing requirements for cable system tenders and perform technical audits of suppliers.

Cable manufacturing and testing witnessing

Defective cables lead to increased project timescales, loss of production and associated costs. To ensure the quality of your cables, Edif ERA will witness full production to ensure best practice factory procedures, manufacturing technology and laboratory test techniques are used.

Cable installation supervision

Many cable failures are attributed to poor cable installation and jointing methods. Our engineers will review methods statements and advise on and witness installation works both on-shore and off-shore to confirm best practice techniques are employed thereby reducing the risk of faults.

Cable testing

Edif ERA has fully equipped cable laboratories in the UK for carrying out independent visual inspections, type testing and materials testing. Our equipment covers electrical, mechanical and thermal techniques for cables and materials along with specialist services such as SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) nail penetration and short circuit testing. Clients are welcome to visit our facilities and witness any inspection or testing.

Cable failure analysis

In the event of a cable failure it is critical to preserve the evidence and establish the root causes which will enable swift mitigation and return to reliable service. Edif ERA are experienced in leading site investigations using proven techniques to catalogue and collect evidence after a failure. Where detailed inspection and testing is needed the failed component will be sent to our UK cable laboratory for analysis. Our laboratory is capable of handling a full range of cables from LV building wiring all the way up to large HV terminations and interconnector cable samples. Our engineers provide expert witness services.

Why Edif ERA?

For critical industries and environments world-wide, we provide technical inspection, engineering and consultancy services to reduce risk, optimise performance and enhance capability, giving our customers the confidence to build successful operations.
