The widely held belief is that the
Covid-19 pandemic will lead to
a smaller foal crop being born
as breeders look to cut costs and
the commercial realities hit home but one
Victorian stud principal says it is not a forgone
conclusion that will be the case.
Larneuk Stud’s Neville Murdoch, who stands
four stallions at his Euroa property, including
O’Lonhro (Lonhro) and Cluster (Fastnet Rock),
operates in a breed-to-race niche but he is
optimistic inquiries from his clients can lead to
only a minimal decline this year.
“It’s not simple, my friend, I can assure you
but it’s OK,” a blunt Murdoch told ANZ Bloodstock
News yesterday. Continued on page 2>>

“You would think (mare numbers will
fall), but who knows? It’s probably the best year to breed in a lot of ways.
“I’m hearing the same (about a decline), but until the end of the
season we don’t really know because there’s a lot of people doing deals.
“A lot of farms, especially the bigger farms, are putting a lot of their own
horses to the stallions. That side of things will keep going, but it’s more the
breed-to-race type owners which I think could slow down a little bit.”
An owner of a number of racehorses with a range of trainers including
Greg Eurell, Murdoch admits that his roster of four stallions - O’Lonhro,
Cluster, Typhoon Tracy’s (Red Ransom) only foal Last Typhoon (Street
Cry) and Honorius (Holy Roman Emperor) - have to do it “the hard way”
but is content with his niche offering.
“We’re a little bit smaller than a lot of people in a lot of ways but I am
not complaining this year. I am actually a little bit surprised that we’ve got
as many coming as what we do,” he said.
“People are still ringing us and a lot of people don’t book out their
stallions - we don’t have stallions that book out - so we can take horses
right up until November and that’s what we do.
“At this time of the year, and every year is the same, people aren’t
thinking about breeding because their mare hasn’t foaled yet.”
The southern hemisphere season started yesterday with trucks criss-
crossing the respective breeding regions of each state delivering mares to
be served.
Murdoch, who has more than 70 mares on the farm, expects to have
his stallions in action from today.
“I own Last Typhoon and he’s back here now and he’s going to have
two-year-olds this year, Wolf Cry has got two-year-olds this year and
Honorius has got two-year-olds this year.
“We’ll have a bit of fun and hopefully a couple of them will swallow a
couple (of races this season).

“We’ve got plenty happening here,
don’t worry about that. O’Tauto runs on Saturday at Caulfield and we’ve
got some nice horses running around.”
At the other end of the pendulum is Arrowfield Stud, home to four-
time champion sire Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice), which is offering a
streamlined stallion roster in 2020.
With the absence of its Japanese contingent, stranded in their home
country due to travel restrictions caused by the coronavirus, Arrowfield
was left without the likes of Maurice (Screen Hero), Mikki Isle (Deep
Impact) and Real Steel (Deep Impact) but was able to bolster its roster by
securing the standing rights for
Woodside Park Stud’s Written
Tycoon (Iglesia).
Last month, when assessing
the overall market following
the Magic Millions National
Broodmare Sale on the Gold
Coast, Arrowfield principal John
Messara described the current
business environment as a “day-
to-day proposition”.
“If we got on top of Covid
over the next few months we
could start to see people being bullish about the (yearling) market, but on
the other hand, if we are still plagued by it, you have got to be conservative
about what you expect is going to happen,” Messara said.
“There will be people who have stables and they will buy horses, they
aren’t going to disappear, but there could be some price moderation.
“At Arrowfield, we have got as good a year as we’ve had bookings wise,
but we’ve got a very tight roster this year with good horses, so we’re lucky.
“We’re at least as good as we were last year.”
Internationally-owned Victorian farm Spendthrift Australia will
launch the southern hemisphere stud careers of Vino Rosso (Curlin)
and Omaha Beach (War Front) who support local stallions Overshare
(I Am Invincible), Gold Standard (Sebring) and Swear (Redoute’s
Choice).
“We’re in a pretty good spot with the amount of bookings that we’ve
got. Obviously, we’ve got the two high-quality shuttle stallions in Vino
Rosso and Omaha Beach and we’re happy with where we’re at with those
boys,” Spendthrift Australia general manager Garry Cuddy said.
“The boss has asked us to only cover a limited number of mares with
those horses and we’re getting up towards those limits which, for us, is
great.
“If border restrictions do stay as they are, like everybody, we will just
play the ball on the run and hopefully come November-December we’re
sitting here talking about how resilient the industry is.”
THERE WILL BE PEOPLE WHO HAVE STABLES AND THEY WILL BUY HORSES, THEY AREN’T GOING TO DISAPPEAR, BUT THERE COULD BE SOME PRICE MODERATION- JOHN MESSARA

Chelmsford fresh no issue for Avilius
Trainer James Cummings is unconcerned
about the fact that Avilius (Pivotal) missed his
first-up run in the Winx Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m),
even though he believes the race was eventually
run to suit, but he believes that he can return
with a strong performance in Saturday’s
Chelmsford Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) at Randwick.
Avilius, who is the early TAB favourite for the
Chelmsford Stakes, was scratched from the
Winx Stakes after he drew wide. "It's a funny
thing, it would have suited him in the end with
the backmarkers coming home," Cummings
said. "But the Chelmsford will just have a little
bit of the edge off compared to the Winx. I've
loved his campaign when I've run him first up
over a mile." Avilius ran second to Samadoubt
(Not A Single Doubt) in last year’s Chelmsford
Stakes.
Two options for ColetteWhile Avilius is locked in to run in the
Chelmsford Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m), his Australian
Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m)-winning stablemate Colette
(Hallowed Crown) may appear in either the
Chelmsford or the Tramway Stakes (Gr 2,
1400m) when final fields are released today.
Colette came to the fore among the three-year-
old staying fillies in the autumn but trainer
James Cummings believes she can figure over
shorter trips as well. "She has come back well,"
Cummings said. "She has a little bit of speed
which you would like to see from a now four-
year-old mare who has had a spell since her
Oaks campaign."
Vanna Girl takes Tramway optionOne horse who will definitely appear in the
Tramway Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at Randwick is
the Toby and Trent Edmonds-trained Vanna Girl
(Husson), although the partnership wishes that
she was instead starting in the Feehan Stakes (Gr
2, 1600m) at Moonee Valley. "This whole business
with Covid-19 has thrown things right out, which
is annoying," Toby Edmonds told Racing.com.
"I'd like to have had a full prep down that way.
That would have been ideal. To have one run into
the Feehan on Saturday would have been better.
It's the ballot-free race (for the Cox Plate), but not
to worry. We'll just have to find another way to get
there if we can." Vanna Girl is likely to plot a path
towards the Epsom Handicap to try and qualify
for the Cox Plate.
La Vernazza following Sunline’s leadChampion New Zealand mare Sunline (Desert
Sun) made her first ever Australian appearance
in the 1998 Furious Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) at
Randwick. The then three-year-old filly had
won her first four starts in New Zealand before
heading to Sydney for her fifth start, with her
six-length win stamping her as a horse of
immense potential. Following in her footsteps
on Saturday will be La Vernazza (More Than
Ready), contesting the Furious Stakes - now
a Group 2 over 1200 metres - at her fifth start.
The Jamie Richards-trained filly has won two
of her four starts, but was second against the
boys in the Sistema Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at her
most recent outing. "She's a lovely big filly, very
athletic and she can produce a good turn of foot
when she needs it," Richards said. "She trialled
well and Kerrin (McEvoy) was very happy with
her work this morning. She's up against the big
timers with nowhere to hide. Hopefully if we
can draw a nice gate and get a soft run we are in
with a chance, but once we get to 1400 metres
and the mile we'll be better suited again."
Williams gives Surprise Baby tick of approvalJockey Craig Williams is confident current
Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) favourite Surprise
Baby (Shocking) will deliver a strong performance
when he returns at Moonee Valley on Saturday.
Surprise Baby is set to resume in the Feehan
Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) and Williams travelled to
Horsham yesterday to partner the six-year-old
in his final piece of fast work before the race.
“I’m not too sure if anyone clocked him or not
but to me his performance (in the Feehan) will
take a lot of beating on his work this morning,”
Williams told RSN927. “He did a nice piece of
work.” Surprise Baby finished fourth first up in
the Feehan Stakes last year before going on to win
the Bart Cummings (Gr 3, 2520m). Williams felt
yesterday’s gallop would put him in good stead
for Saturday, the time spent with the horse giving
him a better understanding of Surprise Baby’s
character. “He has a couple of little quirks which
I think was the whole idea behind Paul (Preusker)
asking me to come down and work him,” Williams
said. “I will benefit greatly from the insight from
this morning’s gallop going into the race.”

Dalasan could back upThe likelihood of an easier contest could see
Dalasan (Dalakhani) attempt to earn a berth
in the Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) in Saturday’s
Feehan Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) at Moonee
Valley. The Leon Macdonald and Andrew
Gluyas-trained Dalasan ran a bold second to
subsequent Group 1 winner Behemoth (All
Too Hard) in the Spring Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m)
fresh before he was turned over as an odds-
on favourite, finishing third in the race named
for his co-trainer, the Leon Macdonald Stakes
(Listed, 1400m), at Morphettville last Saturday.
He was due to be seen next in the Makybe Diva
Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) at Flemington. "There are
a number of factors behind a possible change
of plans," Macdonald told Racing.com. "The
Feehan winner getting an automatic ticket into
the Cox Plate field is obviously the big carrot.
Looking at the nominations for Saturday's race,
you would imagine this is going to be a softer
option than the Makybe Diva. Jamie Kah is on
standby to ride him on Saturday if we decide to
go down that path. Last weekend, whilst it was
disappointing he ran third, he still ran OK and
we felt he had legitimate excuses."
McEwen return for HanseaticLast season’s Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1,
1200m) runner-up Hanseatic (Street Boss) will
make his return against the older horses in the
McEwen Stakes (Gr 2, 1000m) at Moonee Valley
on Saturday as his trainers, Anthony and Sam
Freedman, aim towards the Moir Stakes (Gr
1, 1000m) at the same course and distance.
"Saturday looms as a genuinely run 1000-metre
race with some real speed horses nominated,"
Sam Freedman told Racing.com. "That will
be good for him, he'll get into a good rhythm
because they'll be running along and he's a very
strong travelling horse. It doesn't pose much of
an issue for us if it is a slowly run or fast-run
race, he's got what we think is the best turn of
foot in the race and hopefully he can show it on
Saturday. He's had a nice grounding for his first-
up run on Saturday, he's had nice jump-outs
and we haven't pushed him around too much,
he's a horse that does pretty well fresh. Craig
Williams takes the ride, Jye McNeil was booked
but he got suspended and Craig swooped and
took the ride. It looks like it will be a smallish
field and he'll come with a really big burst late,
hopefully he can get the job done."
Bella Vella primed for Valley returnRobert Sangster Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner
Bella Vella (Commands) is ready to step out
in Saturday’s McEwen Stakes (Gr 2, 1000m)
at Moonee Valley after a strong gallop at
Morphettville yesterday morning. The Will
Clarken-prepared Bella Vella went to a new
level last preparation and the trainer is
hoping that she can measure up through the
Melbourne spring. "She galloped beautifully
this morning and is in perfect order to run well
first-up on Saturday," Clarken told Racing.com.
"Thursday night she will travel across and Jamie
(Kah) is looking forward to reuniting with her
on the weekend."
Bons Away means the world to KellyTrainer Wendy Kelly is itching to get her new
recruit Bons Away (Bon Hoffa) to Saturday’s
McEwan Stakes (Gr 2, 1000m), after a
Covid-19 scare at Cranbourne prompted his
withdrawal from the Carlyon Stakes (Gr 3,
1000m) on August 22. "What an eventful day
that was,” Kelly told Racing.com. “But we
were lucky that he was home and warm in his
box instead of heading all the way to the track
in those wet and windy conditions with the
race washed out anyway.” Kelly, who trained
his sire Bon Hoffa (Belong To Me) to victory
in the Rupert Clarke Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m),
says she’ll assess the two-time stakes winner
after Saturday. “The plan was for him to run
in the McEwen and go third-up in the Moir
Stakes later this month, but we might have to
change plans on that depending on how he
runs on Saturday. I'm really happy with him
going into it though, he's fit and ready to go
and Craig Newitt will ride him."
Flight concerns for staff with internationalsUncertainty surrounding flights into Australia
has prompted concerns that some staff from
leading European stables may be unable to
travel to the country for the upcoming spring
carnival. While travel exemptions are being
granted, Paul Bloodworth of Racing Victoria
is hoping that the flights staff are due to travel
on remain in place. "The travel exemptions are
being approved for the vast majority of people
who want to come, with most internationals
having booked flights to arrive in Sydney in
time to do their quarantine and come down
to Melbourne," Bloodworth told Racing.com.
"The only question now is whether the airlines
honour those flights that are booked.” The Roger
Charlton-trained Aspetar (Al Kazeem), Ashrun
(Authorized) for Andreas Wohler and Ed
Dunlop’s Red Verdon (Lemon Drop Kid) could
be impacted. "Roger (Charlton) has confirmed
the Cox Plate is the target (for Aspetar) but
he is one that is also having a couple of flight
issues for a staff member he wants to send,"
Bloodworth said. “(Australian Bloodstock)
want to bring (Ashrun) and Andreas wants to
train it but his issue is that he's a little late to the
game as that horse only came into the picture
a bit over a week ago," Bloodworth added. “Ed
Dunlop (Red Verdon) had expressed interest
to me to come last week. They are again in the
same camp as Andreas Wohler in as much they
were late to the game, so they don't have any
travel exemptions approved yet," Bloodworth
said.
Day-time Cox Plate confirmedThe centenary Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) will
be run in a late afternoon slot on October 24,
with Moonee Valley chief executive Michael
Browell telling RSN927 yesterday that it will
likely serve as the first leg of a tantalising
double-header with the AFL Grand Final. The
AFL is expected to announce the new venue
for this year’s AFL Grand Final today, with
a night-time contest expected. “Normally
the Cox Plate is run at 5pm but to allow the
build up to the Grand Final we would look
to run the Cox Plate potentially at 4.15pm
or 4.30pm, and I imagine that would be the
second-last race. So if it’s at 4.15pm the last
race would be at 4.50pm which would allow
Seven to move into the build up to the AFL
Grand Final, get their news bulletin away and
then be set for the first bounce,” Browell said.

Richards happy with Garner and Bold StarBold Star (Needs Further) and Garner
(Barbados) impressed trainer Gordon
Richards with their returns in The Heath
1100 Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) at Caulfield last
weekend, but while the stablemates clashed
first-up, they will be separated for their
next outing. Bold Star closed off well for
fourth, a half-length behind Diamond Effort
(Mossman), while Garner was only a head
behind his stable companion in fifth. “Both
horses will return home to Adelaide and the
plan is with Bold Star to run him next in the
Bobbie Lewis at Flemington on September
12. Garner will run at Morphettville a week
later in the Wylie,” Richards told Racing.com.
Stocks Stakes aim for My Gold BraceletWellington Guineas (Gr 2, 1400m) winner My
Gold Bracelet (Pins) will remain in mares’
grade throughout the spring after a good
third at her first Australian run on Saturday
at Caulfield. My Gold Bracelet, who was
originally trained by Johno Benner and Hollie
Wynyard, switched to Mick Price and Michael
Kent Jnr for this campaign and is likely to
head to the Let’s Elope Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at
Flemington for her next start before tackling
the Stocks Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) at Moonee
Valley. “She went super on Saturday,” Price
said. “She’s a mile horse and I think a race like
the Stocks Stakes would be a suitable race for
her. She went really well. A softer track would
be of benefit for her and I can’t wait to see her
over a mile. She is a mare from New Zealand
and I don’t think she appreciates the absolute
Good 3 tracks that we dish up sometimes
over here. She will probably be trained out of
Warrnambool for a while, which will benefit
her greatly. A mile, with a bit of give in the
ground, which Moonee Valley can be, and she
will be right up there with the Group 2 mares
in this country.”
Cherry Tortoni pleases in Kerang hit-outAfter winning a jump-out at Kerang on Monday,
trainer David Payne is excited for the return of
his unbeaten stakes winner Cherry Tortoni
(Night Of Thunder). The three-year-old was put
away for a short spell after winning the Taj Rossi
Series Final (Listed, 1600m) at Flemington and
Payne says he’ll be guided by his next start as
to his spring aspirations. "That was his second
trial - he had one at Tatura about 14 days ago
- so he's ready now and we're planning on
running him in the Exford Plate over 1400
metres,” Payne told Racing.com. “It'll be the
easy option or the hard option after that, we'll
work it out from there.” Payne reported that
star filly Rubisaki (Rubick) has come out of
her disappointing run in the Cockram Stakes
(Gr 3, 1200m). "She seems fine," he said. "She
was pretty disappointing, all I can think is that
maybe going from soft ground to firm ground, it
was a bit of a shock to her system and she didn't
let down."
The Candy Man to join Snowdens
Popular Queensland gelding The Candy Man
(Casino Prince) will join the Sydney stable of
Peter and Paul Snowden to continue his spring
campaign, having originally been slated to join
Michael, Wayne and John Hawkes. Previously
trained by veteran Barry Baldwin at Eagle Farm,
the seven-year-old returned from a lengthy
spell with a first-up victory in Brisbane last
Saturday over 1400 metres. The Candy Man has
won 11 of his 23 starts and more than $500,000
in prize-money.
Carmody picks up NiccanovaAnother Queensland horse has also been
transferred to a Sydney trainer, with Craig
Carmody picking up the smart sprinter-miler
Niccanova (Nicconi). Bred, raced and trained
at Toowoomba by Steve Tregea, Niccanova
finished sixth in the Winx Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m)
at Randwick. Because the Queensland border is
closed, Tregea has elected to leave the seven-
year-old gelding with Carmody.
Vandyke keen to maintain select stableNo trainer has been more successful to start the
2020/21 season than David Vandyke. Although
he has not had the most winners, his 11 wins
from 23 starters since August 1 has him on top
by strike rate with 47.8%. However, the Sunshine
Coast trainer would prefer to handle a boutique
team rather than expanding his numbers, with
a number of interstate imports - such as recent
winners Cloak (Medaglia d’Oro), Chauffeur
(Snitzel) and Desert Lord (High Chaparral) -
successful for the handler. “Taking on those
tried and tested horses isn’t really something I
was actively focusing on, I would be happy to
have a smaller stable, but I certainly don’t want
my stable to be getting any bigger,” Vandyke
said. “I have had success with the tried horses,
so it’s really the choice of those electing to give
me the horses, not my desire to attain them. I
don’t think I’ve ever actually made a phone call
to bring a horse here, I’m quite happy to be a
small trainer.” Vandyke’s stable star Alligator
Blood (All Too Hard) will return Saturday week.
Edward Cummings fined $10,000Trainer Edward Cummings was yesterday
fined $10,000 by Racing NSW stewards after
he pled guilty to six charges relating to a stable
inspection conducted in May. Cummings was
fined $1,000 for having incorrect particulars
on stable returns for 11 of his horses; $2,000 for
employing six people who were not registered
with Racing NSW; $1,000 for not keeping
treatment and administration records; $1,000
for possessing medications that were not
labelled or prescribed in accordance with
Commonwealth legislation; and $2,500 each
for two further charges, with $1,000 suspended
on each of those two charges for 12 months.
Those charges related to his horse Spanish
Pearl (Lope De Vega) being injected for a blood
sample within one day of racing at Gosford
in February, as well as his horses receiving
veterinary services from a veterinarian not
accredited by Racing NSW.

Brown reaches ‘fork in the road’Melbourne Cup-winning rider Corey Brown
admits that a crucial doctor’s appointment this
morning will be a “fork in the road” which may
determine whether he is ever able to return to
the riding ranks. The jockey has not ridden since
the 2019 Queensland Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) after
an incident which saw his mount Lord Arthur
(Camelot) checked badly, with Brown fracturing
his T7 vertebra and suffering fractured ribs,
a cracked sternum and a punctured lung. “I’ll
find out a lot more tomorrow, I’ll go and see
the spine specialist, Dr Andrew Cree, tomorrow
morning,” Brown told RSN yesterday. “I had a
CT scan done a couple of days ago, but because
of the nature of the break, basically it exploded
instead of just being cracked in half. It’s like
piecing a very hard puzzle back together. It feels
better, but whether or not it’s actually healed
enough is the question. Last time I visited the
spine specialist, there was still a two-millimetre
gap in one of the breaks. I’ve been on a bone
growth needle every day for the past 12 months
and hopefully it’s worked the trick. I do want to
ride again, there’s no doubt I want to get back
in the saddle. I don’t know anything but riding.”
Damien Thornton injuredGroup 1-winning rider Damien Thornton
hopes to be back for the start of October after
fracturing his foot in a freak mid-race incident
at Pakenham on Monday. Thornton rode
Surangani (Ready For Victory) in a 1000-metre
maiden, but when the filly was checked early,
the rider’s right foot was caught between two
horses. "There's a crack in the cuboid bone
but it's not displaced so hopefully it doesn't
take too long to heal," Thornton told Racing.
com. "I'm in plaster for now and then I'll be in
a moon boot. It's horrible timing to receive an
injury like this. Hopefully, I'll be back in four
weeks." Thornton’s Group 1 win came in the
Australasian Oaks (Gr 1, 2000m) aboard Toffee
Tongue (Tavistock), who he partnered into a
nice first-up fifth at Caulfield last weekend.
Capitalist favourite for first season sire titleGolden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Capitalist
(Written Tycoon) has been installed as the
$2.50 favourite to be crowned as Australia’s
leading first season sire (by individual winners)
in 2020-21. The Newgate Farm-based Capitalist
was heavily supported by breeders in his
first season at stud, producing 164 live foals.
Coolmore’s US Triple Crown winner American
Pharoah (Pioneerof The Nile) ($5.50) is equal
second favourite alongside Flying Artie (Artie
Schiller). Vinery Stud’s Star Turn (Starcraft)
($7.50), Shalaa (Invincible Spirit ($11), Sooboog
(Snitzel) ($11), Astern (Medaglia d’Oro) ($15)
and Maurice (Screen Hero) ($17) are also in the
market as are Divine Prophet (Choisir) ($21),
Winning Rupert (Written Tycoon) ($21) and
Xtravagant (Pentire) ($34).
Arrowfield blue-bloods win at NewcastleA double for Japanese sire sensation Deep
Impact (Sunday Silence) on Tuesday saw a
pair of blue-blooded Arrowfield homebreds
strike at Newcastle. Bucharest, out of five-time
Group 1-winning mare Miss Finland (Redoute’s
Choice) remained unbeaten from two starts
after victory in the Class 1 Handicap (1400m) for
trainer Chris Waller, while Reaching, who is out
of four-time Group 1 winner Alinghi (Encosta
de Lago) broke through for her maiden victory
in the very next race. The pair were bred by
Arrowfield Stud in partnership with John Leaver's
Planette Thoroughbreds and Alan Jones' Belford
Productions. Miss Finland has seen all six of her
foals to race return as winners, including 1000
Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Stay With Me
(Street Cry), while two weeks’ ago she foaled a
Dundeel (High Chaparral) filly and is due to be
covered by his sire-son Castelvecchio this season.
Moores strike for first winner on returnTrainer John Moore recorded his first
winner since returning as a licensed trainer
in Australia alongside brother, Gary, after
Morethannumberone (More Than Ready)
won the Maiden Plate (1300m) at Newcastle
yesterday. John Moore, Hong Kong’s winning-
most trainer, had his tenure in the province
ended after not being granted an extension to
his license by the Hong Kong Jockey Club at the
conclusion of last season. Morethannumberone
is out of Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) mare Gunawati,
a half-sister to Blue Diamond Prelude (Gr 3,
1100m) winner One Last Dance (Encosta de
Lago).
NEW ZEALAND
Well-travelled Cheval Prometteur joins Cameron stableEnglish import Cheval Prometteur (Declaration
Of War) continues to impress in New Zealand,
with trainer Catherine Cameron gaining a reward
for her effort in preparing horses for Hong Kong
owner Willie Leung. “My main client is Willie
Leung and I normally have about half a dozen of
his in the stable and a lot of those are just passing
through,” Cameron said. “You get a high-class
type of horse. Most of them come from the breeze-
up sales, and we just take them on the next step
and trial them and then they start heading off. But
because of that sometimes you get a nice one like
Cheval Prometteur come back. Willie organised
for him to come to me. He went to Hong Kong
and never raced. He trialled twice and arrived
here a year ago. He had a crook knee so he had
six months in the paddock and then he had two
months on the water treadmill. At this stage it has
been good as gold and is easily manageable.” After
an emphatic win at Tauranga last week, Cheval
Prometteur - who raced for Ed Walker in the UK
when named Glorious Army - will now likely take
the step up to stakes races.
Northern mission for WekaforceSmart sprinter Wekaforce (Showcasing) will get
another chance at 1400 metres this preparation
with trainer Terri Rae aiming the mare at the
Taranaki Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) next
month. Wekaforce trialled over 850 metres
recently and won impressively, but Rae believes
an ability to settle may prove her greatest asset
this preparation. “With the speed she’s got, she
did it easily even though she didn’t win by much,”
Rae said. “She’ll go back to Rangiora again for the
trials next Tuesday then I’m looking at taking her
up to Hawera for the fillies and mares race over
1400 metres. She’s always wanted to rip and tear
in her races, but she’s a five-year-old now and a bit
older and more mature. If she can settle and get the
1400m at Hawera it opens up the options for her.”

American Pharoah colt wins trial
The two-year-old trials have begun in earnest in
New Zealand, with the first southern hemisphere-
foaled son of US Triple Crown winner American
Pharoah (Pioneerof The Nile) to trial a particularly
eye-catching victor at Ruakaka yesterday. The
unnamed colt, the first foal of two-time Group
1 placegetter Strada Cavallo (Alamosa), was
purchased by Pike Racing from the Curraghmore
draft at Book 1 of this year’s NZB Premier Yearling
Sale. Allowed to settle early in the 750-metre trial
under Michael McNab, he was asked to improve
upon straightening, making ground rapidly to
overtake an unnamed Ocean Park (Thorn Park)
colt to win by two and a half lengths. The first New
Zealand two-year-old race is currently scheduled
for September 26 at Ellerslie over 880 metres.
INTERNATIONAL
Skyward on one-way ticket to AustraliaThe John Messara-owned Skyward (Camelot)
will join Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young in
Australia after he has his final run in France
in the Prix Foy (Gr 2, 2400m) on September
13. The Fabrice Chappet-trained Skyward has
had three starts this year, disappointing on soft
ground at his first two runs before returning to
form back on top of the ground when taking the
Prix de Reux (Gr 3, 2500m) at Deauville, a race
won by a number of Cup contenders in recent
years. In the Prix Foy, he will tackle champion
stayer Stradivarius (Sea The Stars) as well as a
number of contenders for the Prix de l’Arc de
Triomphe (Gr 1, 2400m). "We have booked him
on the plane to Australia," Messara told Racing.
com. "Trent has been training one or two for us
at the moment and he approached us early in
the piece about training him. He's trained an
Auckland Cup winner, he's had Derby winners
and I think he's one of the up-and-coming
trainers emerging and working alongside his
partner Natalie, I think they do a pretty good
job. If he runs well in the Prix Foy and arrives in
good shape it will be for this year's Melbourne
Cup, and maybe the Caulfield Cup as well. But if
he doesn't travel well then there's alternatively
the Melbourne Cup next year.”
Addeybb targets Champion StakesAddeybb (Pivotal) has not been seen since
finishing second to Lord North (Dubawi) in the
Prince of Wales's Stakes (Gr 1, 1m 2f) at Royal
Ascot in June, and William Haggas is planning
to take the six-year-old back to the venue for
the QIPCO Champion Stakes (Gr 1, 1m 2f).
Last year Addeybb finished his campaign in the
same race, finishing a three-quarters of a length
second behind top mare Magical (Galileo), and
Haggas revealed ideally he would like to take in
a prep race for the big occasion. "The plan is to
run him in the QIPCO Champion Stakes at Ascot
in which he finished second a year ago," the
trainer said. "I want to give him a run beforehand
but don't know where just yet. We could go
to Longchamp on Arc weekend but that may
come a bit close to Ascot so we'll see." The dual
Australian Group 1 winner had been favourite
for the Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m), but was not
among the international nominations last week.
Said Haggas: "Addeybb won both of his races
in Australia in Sydney, which is a wetter part of
the country than Melbourne, so we're not going
because the ground would be too quick for him."
July Cup winner out of Sprint CupImpressive July Cup winner Oxted (Mayson),
who was a leading fancy for the Sprint Cup
(Gr 1, 6f) at Haydock on Saturday, will not run
after a below-par gallop yesterday. The star of
Roger Teal's Lambourn stable had been among
the favourites for the Group 1, but connections
have turned their focus to Ascot and the QIPCO
British Champions Sprint Stakes (Gr 1, 6f)
on October 17. "I'm not going to run Oxted
and wanted to let people know as soon as
possible," Teal said. "He just worked below par
this morning and with the ground being on the
easy side I don't want to risk him. I'd rather wait
for Champions Day at Ascot. We're waiting on
some blood tests because he didn't work his
normal self this morning and you want to be
100 per cent sure you're firing on all cylinders
going into a race like that. Everything was fine
before today, but you know what horses are
like."

STEVE MORAN

BY STEVE MORAN | @ANZ_NEWS
Edgar Clive Britt was a living legend a
lot longer than most. Born in Sydney,
on October 30, 1913, he died 104
years later on January 29, 2017.
Through a distinguished career, he rode
about1200 winners internationally and was
aboard major race winners in England, Ireland,
America, India and Australia.
He twice won the St Leger, 1000 Guineas
and Oaks in England. He also won the 2000
Guineas and snared the Derby in Ireland.
He rode, for 18 months, for the King of
England and 1948 - with 145 winners - he
was second to the King of Jockeys Sir Gordon
Richards in the British jockeys’ premiership. He
won India's first Derby held in 1943.
He was tiny at 150 centimetres and weighing
about 40 kilograms.
Britt retired in 1959 but kept his hand
in racing, notably as a columnist and was
awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia
and inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of
Fame in 2004.
In 2013, his 100th birthday was marked by a
lunch at Royal Randwick attended by champion
jockeys and dignitaries of the Australian turf.
Malcolm Brown, penned his obituary in the
Sydney Morning Herald, writing:
“In 1948, Britt rode 145 winners and
was runner-up to the legendary Sir Gordon
Richards in the British jockeys' premiership.
In his 18 months as king's jockey, Britt had
frequent meetings with the then Princess
Elizabeth and Princess Margaret, as he saddled
up. On one occasion Princess Margaret told
him that though it was not her inclination, he
could "give it one", being the whip, if he felt the
horse could do better.
“Britt came equal third in the English
jockeys' premiership in 1954, having ridden 869
winners in nine seasons in England. In 1955 he
rode another 101 winners from 459 mounts and
thought he might go on for another seven years.
But in 1957, he came only 10th in the British
jockeys' premiership with just over 60 winners,
and in 1959, now a father of four, he retired.”
His career began with an apprenticeship
to Michael Polson at Randwick. Polson was
adamant the kid “could ride a bit”. He rode
his first winner, Gypsy King at Canterbury in
January, 1930.
In 1933, he ventured to America and won the
Baltimore Handicap on Winooka. That was quite
a story as Max Presnell wrote in the SMH in 2010.
“Only 19, Britt, already a gun apprentice in
Sydney,” Presnell wrote, “went with his master,
trainer Mick Polson, to the US in the wake of
Phar Lap. Polson took two horses: Winooka,
an outstanding sprinter, and Trevallion, above
average, but regarded as little more than a
travelling companion.

ON ONE OCCASION PRINCESS MARGARET TOLD HIM THAT THOUGH IT WAS NOT HER INCLINATION, HE COULD "GIVE IT ONE", BEING THE WHIP, IF HE FELT THE HORSE COULD DO BETTER- MALCOLM BROWN
Page 12

''More than 5000 people crowded the wharf
to wish us good luck and cheered as Monterey
left,'' Britt wrote in his memoirs, Post Haste.
''The horses were carried as deck cargo and
between the two horse boxes was an enclosed
area of 20 yards of sand. We walked the horses
singly every day to give them exercise for the
three weeks they were aboard.''
Winooka was the ballyhoo attraction but,
due to heavy tracks, took time to find his form,
thus the headline: ''Not Winooka but Palooka
gets beaten at Laurel Park.''
With heavy expenses, the contingent
began to run short of the necessary capital and
with Winooka hardly a betting proposition,
Trevallion had to be the pea.
''Betting at the time was on the tote and
the party's bets were placed at tote odds with
starting-price bookmakers in New York, so the
money would not depress the odds on course,''
Britt wrote.
''I knew our finances were low because Mr
Polson had borrowed $100 from me but I did
not did not realise just how desperate they were
until the day of the race. When Mr Polson came
to leg me on to Trevallion he was trembling.
He never worried about a race even when
he wagered thousands of pounds on it. This
time, though, he was obviously disturbed. In a
low voice he said: 'If we don't win we don't go
home.'''
However, the teenager was not only out to
get the money but to even a few scores.
''As a matter of fact one or two rivals had
previously given me a rough time and more
than once had tried to put me over the fence,''
Britt recalled. ''The starting bell rang and I had
Trevallion out of the gate so quickly that within
half a furlong I was in front on the fence having
piled all the inside horses in a heap as I went
across. I felt pretty safe in regard to the stewards
because in previous races when I had been
knocked about they had said nothing.
''As we hit the back stretch I felt my saddle
shifting. I looked down and saw this jockey
had my saddlecloth wrapped around his arm,
getting a free lift from my horse. There was only
one thing to do; I pulled my whip and gave him
a couple of smart cuts across the arm. I heard
his cry of pain and stream of abuse but he let
the saddlecloth go.''
Trevallion won by eight lengths and paid
15/1. Next day the Aussies were headline
news nationwide due to the wail of New York
bookmakers. Reports indicated that between
$75,000 and $150,000 changed hands.
'I was very pleased and went back home
with $3000 in return for the $100 Mr Polson
borrowed off me,'' Britt wrote.
On his return to Australia, Britt was
successful but later moved to India, then a big
racing centre, where, according to folklore, he
was given his weight in diamonds for major
success by an owner.
''No, later in Great Britain I received a
Bentley - slightly used but very valuable - from
a Maharaja,'' Britt told Presnell in 2010.
Back in Australia, he won the 1934 Sydney
Cup on Broad Arrow who would later finish
fourth, with Britt up, to Peter Pan in that year’s
Melbourne Cup.
In 1935, he went to India and rode for the
Maharajah of Baroda for ten years. Jockeypedia
notes that he then went to England in April 1945
where he was still engaged by the Maharajah.
He rode 20 winners from just 107 rides in 1945.
That tally increased the following season to 92,
which had him fourth behind Gordon Richards
in the jockeys' premiership table.
In 1947 he won the Irish Derby and the St
Leger but in 1948, he was replaced by Charlie
Smirke as the Maharajah's jockey.
He remained in England and when his
friend Harry Carr (whom he’d met in India)
broke his leg, Britt replaced him on many of
Captain Boyd-Rochfort's runners, winning the
Yorkshire Oaks on Angelola for King George Vl
and a second St Leger on Black Tarquin. Also,
that year, he won his second Cesarewitch.
Further Classic success came in 1949 when
he won the 1000 Guineas and the Oaks on
Musidora and in the early and mid 1950’s when
he claimed the 1000 Guineas and Oaks for a
second time and the 2000 Guineas.
His career was marked by success from the
start. Britt, in his memoirs, wrote: “Polson was a
great master…to this day I can hear him calling
out to me - I was eighteen and the Australian
racing season had just ended - and he had my
bank book in his hand: “do you know Edgar
you have earned more than the Premier of New
South Wales.”

BY LLOYD JACKSON | @ANZ_NEWS
A month into the new season has
seen two Group 1 contests, namely
the Winx Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at
Randwick, won by Verry Elleegant
(Zed), and, most recently, the Memsie Stakes
(Gr 1, 1400m) at Caulfield, won by Behemoth
(All Too Hard).
Verry Elleegant’s family is the equivalent
of stud book royalty as she descends from the
incomparable Eight Carat (Pieces of Eight). On
the other hand, Behemoth’s family provides a
somewhat stark contrast.
In six generations, Eight Carat, bred in 1975,
is responsible for 58 stakes winners, 17 of which
have won at racing’s pinnacle Group 1 level. Eight
Carat alone foaled Octagonal (Zabeel) with ten
victories at the elite level; Mouawad (Zabeel),
with three; plus Kaapstad (Sir Tristram), Marquise
(Gold And Ivory) and Diamond Lover (Sticks And
Stones) with one apiece.
In eight generations, Behemoth’s Memsie
Stakes win doubled his family’s tally of Group
1 winners from one to two. The first was 2004
Queensland Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) victor
Toulouse Lautrec, a son of Danewin (Danehill),
one of ten black-type winners descending
from Sweet Opera (Anton King), bred in 1932.
Danewin just happens to be a grandson of Eight
Carat via her daughter Cotehele House (My
Swanee), also the fourth dam of Verry Elleegant.
Toulouse Lautrec’s and Behemoth’s
common ancestress is Opera Lass (Leica), a
half-sister to 1956 William Reid Stakes (Gr 2, 6f)
winner Joda Boy (Bobby Pearce).
In order to find a third Group 1 winner
from Behemoth’s line we need to go back to
the 1928 VRC Oaks (Gr 1, 12f), won by Opera
Queen (King Anton), a sister to Sweet Opera,
the eighth dam of Behemoth.
So, how does a quality racehorse like
Behemoth come to be? His family is, at best,
thin on high quality winners but in this case
there are extenuating circumstances.
Nature can be cruel and some mares - such
as Passive (Ruthless), the dam of Champion
Sire Sobig (Summertime) - never produced a
filly foal. To rub salt into that wound, Passive
herself was the only foal of Zenith (Foxbridge);
both were champion three-year-olds.

Champion sire O’Reilly (Last Tycoon)
has a similar story regarding his fifth dam,
Glamor Girl (Coronach), whose dam Kriemhild
(Siegfried) was a sister to Melbourne Cup (Gr
1, 16f) winner Wotan (Siegfried) and half-
sister to Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 12f) winner Gaine
Carrington (Hunting Song). Glamor Girl was an
only foal.
The fortunes of Behemoth’s family was just
as tenuous, hanging on by a thread, as his third
dam, Cheysing (Cheyne Walk) had just two
foals for one filly, which turned out to be Miss
Firecracker (Twig Ruler).
The family has managed to survive and
currently there are a number of fillies around to
ensure that the family can grow.
Of Behemoth’s eight great grandparents, all
but one - Desert Sun (Danzig) - were bred in
Australia. That theme continues as his first four
dams are all by Australian-bred and raced sires.
First dam Penny Banger is by Zedrich
(Zeditave). She scored at Listed level as a two-
year-old at racing headquarters, Flemington.
Zedrich showed
plenty at two, taking
out two Listed
events, one at
Flemington and the
other at Caulfield.
His Caulfield win in
the Rancher Quality
Stakes (Listed, 1000m) saw him defeat Flying
Spur (Danehill). They were to meet in the
autumn for the 1995 Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr
1, 1200m) where Flying Spur got the win from a
flying Octagonal (Zabeel).
Flying Spur became the paternal great
grandsire (via Casino Prince and All Too Hard)
of Behemoth while Octagonal became the
champion son of Eight Carat (see above). In the
Slipper, Zedrich had little luck in the run home
to finish sixth, only two lengths from the winner.
At stud he sired eight black-type winners.
Behemoth’s granddam is Miss Firecracker
and probably qualifies as the best to race by her
sire Twig Ruler (Twig Moss). Given that Twig
Ruler sired just 12 winners, Miss Firecracker
didn’t have much competition. However, she
won six and three of those were in Perth. Prior
to Penny Banger, she produced Aquanita Stakes
(Listed, 1650m) winner Master Minx (Surtee),
who also ran second in the Perth Cup (Gr 2,
3200m) and third in the Western Australian
Derby (Gr 1, 2400m).
Twig Ruler himself won seven, the best
being two graduation races in Perth, so, not
much to be excited about. His sister Olive
Branch (Twig Moss) and his dam Irish Peace
(Showdown) were Listed winners.
As mentioned above, Cheysing, Behemoth’s
third dam, had two foals following an unplaced
race career and Miss Firecracker, her only filly, has
been left the responsibility of continuing the line.
Cheysing is a daughter of Cheyne Walk (Le
Cordonnier), a top-class racehorse whose nine
wins included three at Group 1 level before
siring just five stakes winners. His dam, Fairy
Walk (Minor Portion) was the Golden Slipper
Stakes victress in 1971.
The next dam, Singspiel, is by Eleazar (King
of Babylon), a 13-time winner who took out the
1970 Ascot Vale Stakes (Gr 2, 6f) at Flemington
and whose stud record stopped at two stakes
winners.
Singspiel showed nothing on the racetrack
then had four foals, resulting in one runner. The
only thing she had going for her was being a
half-sister to triple Group 3 winner Latin Saint
(Le Cordonnier) whose 14 wins included five
stakes as well as a second in the Railway Stakes
(Gr 1, 8f) at Ascot in Perth.
The four sires of Behemoth’s first four dams
can claim a total of 17 stakes winners between
them, just one more than Behemoth’s own sire
All Too Hard (Casino Prince), who looks set to
keep adding to his promising record.
From such a humble background,
Behemoth is the real deal. One simply does not
know where the next Group 1 winner is going to
show up and provides all breeders some hope.
NOTE: None of the above statistics would
be possible without the outstanding database
of Arion Pedigrees.
