Entrepreneurs are the key drivers of tomorrow’s innovations and integral to

creating a thriving economy. Entrepreneurs hold a great promise for our future.

They are the innovators that can, and hopefully will lead our world to prosperity

and peace.

India has always been a hard-charging, optimistic place, chockfull of people

who are passionate about ideas that require some suspension of disbelief. In the

last 10 years in particular, the founders are younger; the pace is faster. The current

reigning class is engineers of an age who grew up in a world where a laptop and

Wi-Fi can challenge a government, where the profound and the absurd can coexist

on a computer screen. There is a sense among young entrepreneurs of manifest

intent, of “This is our time.”

And it is this idea that we at Entrepreneurship Development Cell,

Vishwakarma Institute of Information Technology look to promote. This is our time,

and there’s nothing that should hold us back from what we, the future of the

nation, dream to accomplish. Should there be hindrances, we should have the

caliber to work our way past them. And to build this competence, we the members

of EDC, VIIT organised and participated in various activities in the academic year

2014-2015. This is the report of all the activities that were held during this period.

We hope that you, dear reader, get a clear picture and are conversant of all the

activities held this year.

Investiture ceremony

The Entrepreneurship Development Cell, VIIT held their annual investiture ceremony and

launch of ‘Campus Window’ on Friday 27th June 2014. The event was presided over by Dr.R.S.

Acharya mentor of EDC and Mrs Gokhale, counsellor for EDC. Also present at the event were Mr.

Sakhare, HOD Computer Engineering department and Mr. Khandekar, HOD E&TC Engineering

department.

The event began with the launch of ‘Campus Window’, a website designed by Mr. Ankit

Saraf, senior member of EDC. Everybody knows Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook.

Sitting on the last bench in one of the many halls at Harvard, an idea struck Mark. An idea

which changed the way people use the internet. An idea that millions of people around the world,

from Beverley hills to Bangalore, devote themselves to.

“The project will give a very good platform for the students and the faculty to

put up there thoughts, ideas and study material.”

-Prof. Dr. Sakhare

Ankit Saraf’s ‘Campus Window’ works on a similar idea. He has designed a social

networking site for VIIT, which brings students and teachers on a common platform, and gives

them the space to share ideas, thoughts, and queries. 15 thousand lines of perfect code, and the

end result, a masterpiece which could revolutionize the learning process at VIIT.

This was followed by the investiture ceremony for members of EDC. Newly appointed

office bearers were adorned with sashes by Dr R.S. Acharya, the mentor of EDC VIIT.

Dr R.S. Acharya, has always envisioned that members of the cell should gain confidence

by facing challenges in life. In his speech, he emphasised the importance of discipline and dignity

of the individual and the cell.

Prof. Sakhare inaugurating campuswindow.in New appointed team EDC for the year 2014-15

The new president, Mr. Saurabh Bhanage, in his speech, promised a definite change for a

better tomorrow, which was met by an enthusiastic roar of applause.

Based on their exemplary record over the past few years, Entrepreneurship Development

Cell, VIIT, have a lot in store, and it looks more than likely that they will live up to their high

expectations.

Market Research Competition

The cell held a “Market Research Competition” on Saturday, 28 June 2014. The

competition was conducted and judged by Ankur Bang, SFC Coordinator, senior member of EDC.

The competition was conducted to help participants gather information about market trends and

the rates of engineering stationery. The quotations brought from this competition would help

the E-cell estimate expenses and make purchases for the student facilitation center, which they

would be opening later this month.

The student facilitation center aims at providing important services under one roof to

engineering students. The SFC will be providing essential stationery for first year engineering

students at rates much lower than the famous stationery retailers in Pune. The kit would include

all the instruments required for engineering graphics and other subjects.

The goal of the market research competition was to get the lowest possible price

quotation for the stationery kit. The participants were split into 3 teams and were asked to go to

shops of their choice to get price lists. After a detailed, comprehensive study, the quotations

were sent to the seniors for evaluation. The winners were Hitesh Nikam (SE IT), Deepali

Raiker(SE IT) and Daideepya Sinde(SE CIVIL), who got quotations which levelled prices of

established stationers in the city. Results of the competition were announced at EDC’s first formal

meeting of the academic year 2014-15.

Case study run

11th July 2014

Excitement. Nervousness. Happiness. Fear. Confidence. All at the same

time! The very first event held by the event management team - the case study run.

The SEs organized an activity for the EDC members for the very first time.

Members were divided into groups of 4. The case study run consisted of two

problem statements. The team to submit the first problem statement was

immediately handed the second statement. So time was one deciding factor. The

problem statement required balance sheet knowledge and a few economics-related

terms. Aditya Javalekar and Ankita Betala organised and hosted the activity.

It was a great experience for all the participants as they were brought into a

whole new domain, stepping out from their core field of education. Since it was

the first activity, scope of errors was vast! Different interpretations of the balance

sheet led to heated discussions over the final tally. The debate over the final tally

went on long after sunset, with everyone willing to come to a conclusion and not

leave the suspense hanging. Hence everyone had a lot to take back from the

activity. It was well planned, well executed and a thorough success.

Interactive Session On the 14th of July, the Entrepreneurship Development Cell of VIIT conducted an

interactive session for its cell members. The session involved two speakers, Akshay Nahar, co-

founer of True Spider and Adarsh Kedari, founder of punesabji.com. The two speakers are

alumni of our college. The aim of the session was to have a closer idea about the challenges and

problems involved in start ups.

The first part of the session involved Akshay Nahar talking to the cell members about his

start up. After introducing himself to everyone, he went on to talk about his journey from the

time he left college up till now. He shared with us, all the tough times he had in this path, and

then answered the questions raised by the members. He spoke about how to handle a business in

partnership, how to generate funds for basic operations and how to maintain ethical practices.

The second part saw Adarsh Kedari talk about planning. He stressed on the fact that

knowledge in one’s domain was essential. He spoke about his business which involved

perishable goods. He went on to talk about the supply chain and gave an idea of what his future

plans might be. He advised and encouraged everyone to find their spark as early as possible.

Both the speakers mentioned that as one grows, the risk taking capacity reduces, thus it

was advisable to start early. It was a very inspiring session and all the members were uplifted by

the end of it.

INDUSTRIAL VISIT 19TH JULY, SATURDAY, 2014.

EDC VIIT visited TouchMagix, an IT company situated on Range Hills

Road, Pune. The company is owned by prodigy and origami expert, Mr. Anup

Tapadia. The company is on the first floor and neighbours another company

SAFEPACKAGE, run by Mr. Rajendra Tapadia, father of Anup Tapadia. The

company currently consists of 35 employees with different teams set aside for

purposes like marketing, support and maintenance, programming, etc.

TouchMagix produces interactive user friendly touch products for

consumers serving multiple purposes. The company is in collaboration with a

company of Netherlands, and has created a software named Snowflake Suite which

enables multi touch and multi user interaction. They use this software in theirrange

of products. They have also created a software named Magix Suite which is an

open source software. With the help of this software, anytouch laptop can be

integrated with touch recognition.

Team EDC at TouchMagix Office

The company also builds their own sensor which can be mounted on any

projector and used to detect movement. It gets eight to ten leads every day from

foreign countries. It provides free installations for various organizations of

different fields in the society. These locations are chosen on the basis of footfall. In

India, this is their only marketing strategy apart from advertisements in social

media.

Motion Sensor Demonstration of the Motion Sensor

TouchMagix produces the following products:-

1) MAGIX FLOOR

This product comprises of an infrared sensor, projector, Motion Magix Ultimate

software, personal computer and speakers. This product creates a user interactive

surface on the floor. It comes in a complete package and the cost is around 5 lacs.

The company customizes it on the basis of user recommendation and needs. The

company had recently created a forty metre long Magix Floor with eight

projectors, for welcoming the king of Jordan.

The company is also planning to integrate the complete package with hardware

facilities. One of the glitches faced by the Magix Floor is its failure of colour

recognition. For example, a person wearing white pants may find the interaction

with floor slow or may not find it at all.

Page 11: EDC 2014-2015 Annual Report - Final

Demonstration of Magix Floor

2) MAGIX WALL

This product is similar to Magix Floor but it is displayed on the wall. It does not

need a special surface. Any surface can be converted to display with the help of a

special tape, especially glass. This product is being widely used in malls for

advertisement purposes.

The Magix Wall can be turned on with the sensor mounted on the projector

inside the shop. Any person can interact with it and get useful information

regarding the desired product. It is also a useful tool for presentation purposes.

Many Nike shops are using this technology in India. State Bank of India is the

latest to use this product in their office.

3) MAGIX TABLE

This is one of the revolutionary products of Touch Magix and probably their

best one yet. It is a multi-touch and multi user interactive table. It is a forty touch

recognition product. Infrared Sensors are used. The Magix Table comprises of

Snowflake Suite software. Its use to corporate companies is more than the use to an

average customer. The Magix Table is highly compatible for multiuser

presentation purposes, analyzing problems and decoding them.

SUMMARY

Touch Magix plans designs state of the art products and affordable prices.

Recently, Touch Magix had signed a contract with Samsung, with regard to their

development in display technology. It is also open to internships and hires

engineers from all sectors.

The industrial visit was a very informative and inspirational experience. We

learnt a lot about the functioning of TouchMagix, the products they make, the

initiative they take, and how they vouch for the development of India on the

technological front. We can gladly say that Touch Magix is bound to revolutionize

the way world sees India as and set the path for us to become a tycoon in

technology.

NATIONAL ENTREPRENEUR’S WEEK The past week saw the Entrepreneurship Development Cell of VIIT celebrate the Nation

Entrepreneur’s Week in a grand fashion. There were five distinctly enterprising events which

included an online debate, a photography contest, interview review session, an advertising

activity and an interactive guest session.

The first event was an online debate which was conducted on one of the most socially

active sites, Facebook. The topic of the debate read “Young entrepreneur should continue to

run the start-ups they founded instead of handing the reins to more experienced executives.

Agree or Disagree?” There were many active participants for this online debate which took

place between 7p.m. and 10p.m. on the 28th of July.

Page 14: EDC 2014-2015 Annual Report - Final

entrepreneurship’. Participants were required to submit a picture which captured the spirit of

entrepreneurship and post them online. The picture with maximum likes was declared as the

winner.

Student Facilitation Centre 1st August 2014

Student Facilitation Centre is an initiative taken by the Entrepreneurship

Development Cell of VIIT to provide the first year engineering students with all the

essential stationery and accessories in the college campus at prices much lower than

that offered in the market. After its inauguration last year, the plan was to make this

year’s SFC bigger and better. A lot of research and thought had gone into the planning

this year. The aim of the program was to provide the members of the cell with

experience in market research, negotiation tactics, promotion and sales.

It all began with a market research activity which was conducted earlier this

academic year for the members of the cell. The members were divided into groups and

had to go to the market, negotiate with suppliers and get the best prices. The planning

began two weeks before the start of sales. The sales began on the 1st of August when

the first year students came for their orientation.

EDC Members with the SFC kits

The team equalled last year’s tally in merely two days. The total count finally

went up to 131 kits sold in a week and the profit was increased by a whopping 120%.

This activity proved to be a huge success this year not only in terms of profit but also in

terms of the experience gained the members of the cell.

Case Study

5th February, 2015

The second year members of Entrepreneurship Development Cell, VIIT

organised a case study session for their members on 5th February, 2015. Case

studies are one of the most crucial educative mechanisms in business

management. They aim at improving an individual’s problem solving ability as well

as improving working efficiency.

The case study was subjective in nature, and was about a milkman named

Leonard who used innovative techniques to revolutionise the sale of milk and its

by-products. Using various unconventional techniques to market and sell his

product, Leonard battled his way through traditional practices and orthodox selling

tactics to bridge the gap between the seller and consumer, thereby creating a

transparent, effectual and welcoming environment in his outlet.

A team engrossed in discussion

The character taught the participants that an idea is enough to motivate one

to swim against the tide and change the way the game is played. It was a new

experience for First Year students as they were brought into a whole new domain,

stepping out from their core field of education. The discussion ensuing the case

study gave an understanding of the various ways the given situation was perceived.

Balance Sheet Session 9th February, 2015

Team EDC organised a session on balance sheets on 9th February, 2015. The

session was open for all students of VIIT. It aimed at giving the participants a

comprehensive understanding how balance sheets are made. Balance sheets are

essential for anyone who wishes to have any relation with money, as no official

financial transaction takes place without proper tabulation.

Hosted by Richardson Samson, Associate CFO, EDC VIIT, the session began

with an introduction to financial terms like assets, liabilities and equity. The

participants were then introduced to more terms which were mapped to real world

examples. After they were acquainted with financial expressions, the participants

were given a list of amounts used for various purposes. The task was to segregate

the amounts into assets, liabilities and equities, and verify the equation,

Assets=Liabilities+Equity.

Teams captivated in finding the solution to the balance sheet The participants were then divided into groups of three. They were given a

description regarding money transactions of an organisation. They were instructed

to prepare a balance sheet for the transactions, with the insinuation that a flaw in

the transactions was to be detected.

Different interpretations of the balance sheet led to heated discussions over

the final tally. The discussion over the final tally went on long after sunset, with

everyone willing to come to a conclusion and not leave the suspense hanging. It

was well planned, well executed and a thorough success.

Group Discussion

16th February, 2015

16th February, 2015 witnessed a group discussion organised by

Entrepreneurship Development Cell, VIIT. Group discussions provide a platform for

exchange of information and analysis of situations. They are a methodology used

by most organisations to judge a candidate for various soft skills.

The topic for the discussion was “Make in India” an initiative by the present-

day Prime Minister of India, Shri. Narendra Modi. Make in India is a project that

aims to improve the economy by promoting manufacture of goods in India. It aims

to increase employment of skilled labour and standard of technology in India by

using Foreign Direct Investment as its major benefaction. The initiative promises

the headway of 100 smart cities in a bid to uplift less developed areas and introduce

them to state-of-the-art technology. It also introduced norms like recruitment of

60% of labour from neighbouring areas of a workplace to generate local

employment.

Albeit, the initiative missed out on the inclusion of the agricultural sector,

which accounts to a major chunk of India’s GDP. Transparency of the initiative was

also brought into question, and various other pros and cons of the plan were

accentuated. The discussion proved to be the perfect platform for expression of

views, and sharing of varied standpoints on one of the most talked about topics in

the country.

Meanwhile, when the FE members were busy investing and making the

most out of the 100 Rupees given to them, the organisers had a case study of

their own. The students were supposed to come with innovative ideas for

startups in a given scenario and use all the possible resources available and make

the most out of it. Following was a small test conducted by the President, Saurabh

Bhanage, where the participants had to define various terms used in aspects of

finance. Terms like repo rate, market cap, market share, IPO, PPP, etc are

something that we all read in the papers, but getting to know about their

technicalities and being tested on their definitions was a good method of self

evaluation and the entire day was a great learning experience.

Alfa Laval (Sarole site)

Alfa Laval was established in 1992 as LKM India. It currently has 3 factories

and 2 service centres in India. The Sarole factory manufactures pumps, valves,

fittings and air heat exchangers (AHE). The factory has processes ranging from CNC

machining to customised assembly of components to give the high precision

outputs for the customer as per requirements. The factory has a turnover of around

200-300 crores per annum with an annual growth rate of 10%. The site is divided

into 3 parts, each functioning independently.

The site also uses some unique features for safety as well as for work

efficiency. i.e. the idea of using various coloured cards to mention the type of

problem namely cost, safety, quality and delivery, to expedite the solution of issues

in short amounts of time. The persistent problems are then transferred to higher

authorities for evaluation.

The main idea being to connect the workers on the shop floor to the

management. Meetings are held before every shift on the shop floor and every

week with managing authorities. A company that uses state-of-the-art technology

and automation, also uses such simple approaches to highlight the significance of

human aptitude and maintain a positive work environment. Alfa Laval use batch

production techniques to deliver on time without affecting product quality.
