Criterion 3

3.1 Recognizes and seeks out multiple data sources

3.2 Analyzes and interprets multiple data sources to inform school-level improvement efforts

3.3 Implements data driven plan for improved teaching and learning

3.4 Assists staff to use data to guide, modify and improve classroom teaching and student learning

More on Criterion 3

• Creating a school calendar showing how assessments, professional development, and data analysis are built in and prioritized.

• Providing evidence (e.g., agendas, minutes, notes) of teacher’s training on and use of data.

• Gathering examples of data being used to inform improvement in instruction.

• Surveying teachers to analyze how data is being used, what data is needed, and what professional development is needed to improve data use.

Examples of Knowledge/Skills

• Ensure the creation of a School Improvement Plan (SIP)

• Know components and purpose of the SIP

• Mobilize staff to implement the SIP

• Ensure the SIP is focused, feasible and implementable

• Clearly communicate the elements of the SIP with constituent groups (staff, parents, board and community)

• Utilize a variety of assessment data

• Analyze data to assess the effectiveness of the SIP

• Collaborate, problem-solve and build consensus with individuals and groups

Page 7: Ed psy 510 5th class 2014

Examples of Evidence/Measures

• Individual student achievement data

• Compilation of classroom data, including collection of and response to measures of classroom achievement

• Principal observation notes of teachers and students regarding learning goals and teachers’ use of assessment data to inform subsequent instruction

• Results of a focused short-term/ long-term data-driven plan

• Student/family involvement in student achievement plans

• Teacher/student self-evaluation

• Individual student intervention plans

• Establish a building data dashboard to monitor progress

Reflection Questions

•  How do I plan to use data to inform our school-wide improvement effort

• How will I use data to monitor the impact of our current improvement plans?

• How can I provide additional sources of information or data to staff to support their use of data?

• What training will I provide to staff to support their use of data to inform instructional improvement decisions?

• What training do I need to better support staff in using data to inform instructional improvement decisions?

Constructing a Data Pyramid

• Read the definitions and types of data including examples on Handout H5.2

• Construct a pyramid on the chart paper that represents the relative time and attention currently given to each of the 5 types of data in your school (Weekly, quarterly, annually, never)

• Write the name of each of the 5 types of data in the most appropriate layer with the widest part of the pyramid representing where you spend the greatest amount of time…the top the least.

• Read Handout H5.3 silently

Due 10/2

Given what we’ve learned about SIP’s and the SIP process…

Write a Reflection Paper about the usefulness of School Improvement Plans.

Be succinct ... 1-3 pages should do it.

Page 27: Ed psy 510 5th class 2014

Due 10/9

• Develop your Philosophy of Assessment• What will you adhere to in your practice?• What are you beliefs about the usage of data?• What are your non-negotiables?• What can your staff count on from you?• How do TPEP, CCSS and student growth fit?

• Put your main concepts into a presentation you can share with your first staff.

• Prepare to share in small groups on 10/9.
