At Skyline, we believe that music has the power to do much more than entertain and that in these uncharted times, Art is a lifeline.

Art reaches beyond the scope of enjoyment, to educate, enlighten, inform and inspire. We are proud to offer a wealth of outreach opportunities that are as diverse and dynamic as the artists that present them, from teachers, genre founding musicians to award winning songwriters. From story-

song writing, to how to utilize social networks, to empowering your audience, our artists can bring your patrons an experience they will never forget.

Your patrons… Our performers….Imagine The Possibilities !

EDUCATE

From the International Folk Music Award’s “Artist Of The Year” come two programs that are guaranteed to capitivate! Known for their outstanding prowess with harmonies as well as instruments, the band’s workshops capture and share the Darlingside magic.

Sweet Harmony:Discover the many different ways vocal harmonies can be used: to highlight a sing-along chorus, to lay a smooth textural bed, to create a rhythmic chant, to simulate background instrumentation, to create a chorus effect, or to subtly augment the melody of a song. Darlingside pull on four-part barbershop, classical, folk, and world music to create rich harmonies and diverse song structures---some of them entirely a cappella. Come join in the song! String Theory:Darlingside have an arsenal of string instruments: plucked and bowed, acoustic and electric, traditional and out-of-the-box. Come hear the many permutations possible when combining cello, violin, mandolin, acoustic and electric guitars, banjo, bass, and even effects boxes---the sounds will range from sustained (ambient and flowing) to rhythmic (percussive and tight). In this workshop, Darlingside show how they pick and combine the string sounds for each arrangement, matching the textures to the lyrics and mood of the song.

Matt Nakoa- Available for Virtual Ed Programs Educational Programs: Workshops and Residencies and Virtual ProgramingAvailable for Students and General PublicEducational Level: Elementary School through High School

With successful programs in school districts from New York to California, as well as outreach programs at festivals and through BOCES programs, Matt Nakoa is an Ed program favorite!Matt's new virtual educational outreach program Songwriting: Start to Song offers beginner to advanced students engaging methods for uncovering their unique creativity, directing it into effective writing, and building their creative community. Songwriting: Start to Song takes place over several sessions, allowing for flexibility in instruction. Matt also offers in-person workshops in songwriting and vocal performance and can provide choral arrangements for his original songs and will include school choirs in his public show.

“ With 650+ elementary kids- all packed in- this was phenomenal ! Matt did a song-writing activity (similar to the onehe did at our high school) and had all the kids on the edge of their seats (adults, too). I have heard a lot of positive feedback from the teachers...they LOVED it. He got all the kids involved and taught them musical concepts while making it meaningful. Matt is professional and enthusiastic. He was perfect with the little ones, so encouraging and up-lifting but has a "cool" factor that the older kids want to relate to. Matt arranged a song for my high school kids to sing at his show. That was special and truly a once in a lifetime moment. My kids are still talking about it.” Kylie Davis - Sherburne-Earlville Central Schools

Roger McGuinn Educational Program: “How Folk Music Got Me To The Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame” Educational Level: High School through Adult

Roger McGuinn not only lived history, he made history with his fearless sense of experimentation. As the leader of the influential 60’s group The Byrds he was on the leading edge, combining the rock beat of the Beatles with the folk sensibilities of Bob Dylan, to create the genre known as "folk-rock.” He has also been credited as a creator of “psychedelic-rock," "country-rock," and "space-rock."

Roger McGuinn didn’t pick up a guitar until he was 14 years old and “discovered” folk music during an outreach program at school. That visit changed his life, and McGuinn brings that process full circle with an inspiring and dynamic program that explores both his career and its place in musical and cultural history. From the traveling bards of the 1100’s, to the protest songs of the 60’s, to the current trend of rock for a cause, Roger explores how folk music and its songs have chronicled and changed history. Engaging and inspirational, this workshop preserves folk history while bringing the music to life in a decidedly contemporary way. Traveling from the birth of a genre through its magical place in Rock N Roll history, this program is a loving tribute to folk music and a rare glimpse into the life and development of a rock n roll legend.

Henhouse Prowlers - Available for Virtual Ed Programs Educational Programs: Workshops and Residencies Available for Students and General PublicEducational Level: Elementary School through Adult

The Henhouse Prowlers are known for setlists that include bluegrass covers of songs from around the world, many of them learned during their time touring other countries through American Music Abroad, a State Department program for American musicians to travel and build relationships with other countries, cultures, and artists. To put those experiences into action, the band in 2013 founded Bluegrass Ambassadors, a digital space for advocacy and education that has now added an online Bluegrass Ambassadors Academy to connect professional musicians with learners while everyone's at home. During the pandemic The Prowlers livestream shows with artists around the world, dedicating a portion of their videos to teaching children about music. The flexible format and unique perspective of a Bluegrass Ambassadors workshop adds a valuable experience to any event with music and/or cultural focus. Workshops are suited for audiences with or without instruments. The Henhouse Prowlers can cater their programming to the curriculum and collaborate with teachers and administrators to design activities. Educational Program: OutreachEducational Level: High School to adultSpecially aimed at Community Organizations and Church Groups

Members of The HillBenders or the group as a whole can provide outreach programs to your community in tandem with venue performances. Demonstrating and discussing bluegrass music at area schools is a fun way to get kids interested and involved in the arts and music in particular. The history of the genre, the traditions it contains, and experiencing the instruments up close and personal can have a deep impact on young eyes and ears. In addition to educational outreach opportunities, there also might be occasions where visiting a hospital or nursing home can bring the music to those who can not make venue performances, providing an entertainment and therapeutic experience while creating a community of inclusion. Ask The HillBenders representative about adding these programs to your booking.

Marielle Kraft - Available for Virtual Ed Programs

Educational Programs: Workshops, Virtual Programing & Residencies Available for students and General Public Educational Level: Grades 4-12

Former middle school English teacher Marielle Kraft incorporates her past teaching experience into her songwriting workshops. These engaging lessons focus on poetry and figurative language, as she expands on what students have touched on in their academic classes, deepening their learning experience. Students will learn different poetic devices and songwriting techniques through analyzing popular songs and creating a product of their own. Her youthful energy and unique ability to connect with adolescent students makes her programming perfect for middle and high school programs. “With ease and grace, Marielle Kraft quickly became a comforting “virtual” presence as she discussed her journey of songwriting and her inspiration from poetry to three of my tenth grade English classes. Even though the visit was online due to the pandemic, my students were still enamored by her enthusiasm and willingness to perform and answer questions. She even played an unreleased single that my classes raved about! At the end of the year, many students pinpointed Marielle's lesson as the highlight of their virtual learning. If she can do all of this virtually, just imagine what she could do in a physical classroom environment. Marielle also seamlessly connected her music to my poetry unit - something that not all guest speakers can do. She took the time to conference with me before the visits and asked for my goals, and with that, she tailored her talk. Because of Marielle, students wanted to find more poems and songs that related thematically, which is a teacher's dream. When communicating with my students and fielding various questions on top of performing a couple of songs, Marielle didn't miss a beat ~ literally and figuratively of course." ~Mary Kate Walsh (High School English Teacher).
