Welcome Back Birdneck Educators!

We want to help make you the Best in the Nest. I’d like to share some information to assist you, and better understand our population. Birdneck Elementary is a homestead schools for the military here in Virginia Beach. What does that mean? Military members with dependents with any kind of special needs (Asthma to Zygoauromandibular Dysplasia (Treacher Collins Syndrome) move to this area for the medical facilities available. With some military housing being designated to our school, we need to be ready for any child that comes through our doors. Our regular and special education population can vary tremendously. We want to help our students to adapt to the school environment and be as successful as possible while they are here.

* Ask questions- Asking questions is how we learn, we want our students to practice this, educators need to ask questions too.* Build relationships– Building relationships builds accountability and trust among others. Build relationships with students, coworkers, parents so we can all help each other to make our students successful (Denver Academy, 2008)* Communicate- Communicating expectations and needs puts everyone on the same page. When we know what to expect and what to do, we can all do our job.

Each student is unique in his or her own way. By looking at the student, we can establish their best and make them successful.Body--- kinesthetic- athletes, dancersLogical—Linguistic and quantitative- mathIntra---Interpersonal Spatial—Musical-artist, performersBLIS (Body, Logical, Intrapersonal, Spatial) is about learning and getting the students engaged in the teaching portion of your classroom. BLIS provides teachers an opportunity to step back and take a look at each student’s individual learning style that will give insight and perspective toward developing a differentiation instruction for the class (Denver Academy, 2008)
