Conditioners are designed as an economical buthighly qualified solution to building climate controlin Division 2 / Zone 2 Areas. Beginning with thecomplete line of Bard Hi-Boy® Wall Mount Series®Brand Air Conditioners, Bebco converts the unitsby a process that assures National Electrical CodeArticle 500 compliance, while retaining the low costof a commercially produced unit. The resultingproduct line offers an Underwriter's LaboratoriesListing, at minimum cost, in a professionally modifiedunit.

Technical DescriptionBebco Model EX Air Conditioners are self

contained wall mounted units with all necessarycomponents to supply a room or building withrecirculated air that is filtered, temperaturecontrolled and humidity limited. The units consistof two isolated sections, stacked one atop theother. The lower section, known as the condensercompartment contains the condenser coil, thecondenser coil motor, fan and shroud assembly,the compressor, and related sensors which supplythe unit controls with signals to activate anddeactivate the compressor and condenser fan.The upper section, known as the evaporatorcompartment, contains the evaporator coil, auxiliaryheater elements (if supplied), and the evaporatorblower assembly, which consists of two blowerwheel fans and a duel shaft motor. In addition, theevaporator compartment contains the unit'selectrical controls and a return air filter element.The units are contained within a 20 gauge sheetmetal housing that features wall surface mountingflanges, ventilation grills on the sides and face ofthe condenser compartment, a drip shield flange,and two panel covers that allow full access to theevaporator compartment. The units are intendedfor use in outdoor locations and feature a weatherresistant paint finish, which can also be refinishedwith white enamel or custom paint. Model EX-WACunits are intended for installation in areas whereexposure to a severely corrosive atmosphere isconsidered unlikely or very infrequent. On the rearside of the units, a supply duct outlet (top) andreturn duct inlet (bottom) extend from the rear wallof the evaporator compartment. Upon installation,the ducts penetrate exterior building or room wallcutouts to recirculate air within the structure. Theunits are furnished with a drip shield and bottommounting flange, bolted to the back side of theunits, and a return grill and supply grill are shippedloose to dress the wall cutouts. In addition, custom-built sectional supply ducting and registers can befurnished to distribute the conditioned air evenly tomultiple rooms or across the length of a large roomor building.

The Conversion ProcessStarting with documented instructions and a fully

inspected and operationally tested unit, Bebco beginsthe conversion process in the lower condensercompartment, where a special wiring housing is fitted tothe compressor, and sealed flex conduit and form sevenconduit fittings are added to ensure that all high voltagewiring is suitable for a Division 2 / Zone 2, Group C & D/ IIA, IIB Area. Next, the original condenser coil motorand fan blade are replaced with a Division 2 / Zone 2 ULListed TENV motor with hermetically sealed thermaloverloads and an aluminum spark-free fan blade. Theunit's evaporator compartment is then made suitable fora building or room with either a Nonhazardous or Division2 / Zone 2 rated interior. On units with a "G2" electricalrating, for buildings with Nonhazardous interiors, theelectrical control compartment is carefully sealed, aspecial cover is added to the exterior surface of the unitand the original evaporator blower is left intact, alongwith the original motor wiring harness. On "22" ratedunits, for buldings or rooms with Division 2 / Zone 2 ratedinteriors, the original electrical controls and thier enclosureare removed, and a NEMA 7 explosion proof enclosurecontaining all electrical controls is mounted externally tothe unit. Then the evaporator blower wheels and motorare replaced with spark free aluminum blower wheelsand a Division 2 / Zone 2 UL Listed TENV Motor withhermetically sealed thermal overloads, along with sealedflex conduit and appropriate condit seals. On both units,inrinsically safe barriers for all condensor compartmentsensors are added to the controls. On the "22" rated unit,an intrinsically safe repeater relay is added for the safeoperation of a Division 2 / Zone 2 thermostats. Finally,"G2" units are silicone sealed at every point of upperbody panel attachment (for the evaporator compartment)and gasket strips are applied to the rear covers to providea positive seal against the entrance of flammable gasesor vapors. All units are then fully inspected andoperationally tested to ensure quality of the final product.

IMPORTANT CONVERSION PROCESS NOTEVarying compressor styles furnished by Bard require

Bebco to add a special conduit assembly to accommodatereciprocating compressor crankcase heaters and to addnon-incendive isolation barriers for any high pressure orhigh temperature sensors in the condenser compartment.Sensors are usually present on units featuring scrollcompressors and on units exceeding 1.5 tons.

"22" & "G2" Unit RatingsThe most distinguishing difference between various

models within the Model EX-WAC Product Line, besidesthe obvious difference of size, is the classification of theevaporator compartment. As noted above, since theunits are intended for use in a Division 2 / Zone 2, GroupC & D / IIA, IIB Hazardous Area, the condensercompartment components and all associated wiring arerated for Division 2 / Zone 2 Areas. But the evaporatorcompartment components are only exposed to the airwhich is recirculated within the room or building that isbeing air conditioned. For this reason, Bebco designsunits that are suitable either for a Nonhazardous interioror a Division 2 / Zone 2 interior, as noted above. The unitsare distinguished by a segment of the Model Number thatidentifies the unit's electrical rating. A rating of "22"represents a unit that is suitable for a Division 2 / Zone 2Area both inside and outside of the building or room. Arating of "G2" represents a unit that is suitable for aDivision 2 / Zone 2 Area on the exterior of the building orroom, but which is only suitable for a Nonhazardous Areawithin the room or building. The downgraded "G2" unitis therefore, by design, only suitable for building interiorsthat are rated Nonhazardous, but is accordingly offeredat a significantly lower price than the "22" units.See IMPORTANT NOTES for critical information >>

IMPORTANT "G2" UNIT NOTES

"G2" Units are designed and approved foruse on control rooms or buildings classifiedas Nonhazardous as a result of Type Zpressurization in accordance with NFPA496. In addition, the control rooms orbuildings must contain no internal source ofignitable concentrations of gases or vapors,e.g. analyzer rooms.

"G2" Unit rear access covers do not have tobe considered as an opening capable ofbeing opened in the calculation for minimumoutward velocity in accordance with NFPA496 section 5-4.1(b), exception #2.

"G2" Units must be connected to a power(service) disconnect switch behind aseparate disconnect switch for thepressurization unit, in accordance with NFPA496 section 5-4.9.

"22" Units are designed and approved foruse on control rooms or buildings classifiedas Class I, Division 2 / Zone 2, Groups C&D/ IIA, IIB and contain no internal source ofignitable concentrations of gases or vapors(analyzer rooms).

"22" Units are also designed and approvedfor use on analyzer rooms or buildingsclassified as Class I, Division 2 / Zone 2,Groups C&D / IIA, IIB, if the room or buildingis ventilated in accordance with NFPA 496section 7-2.6.
