Whether you’re building a new business or retrofitting an existing space, clean burning natural gas is your environmentally-friendly energy choice. Natural gas appliances not only make every day life better, they’re cost-effective to operate, generally last longer and require less maintenance. In addition to the environmental benefits of lower emissions, plus higher energy efficiency, more than 80 percent of the natural gas used in the U.S. is domestically produced.
Operating your business with natural gas can help reduce your impact on the environment without sacrificing comfort and convenience. If you want to make your business a little greener, while enjoying cost benefits, ask for natural gas. To learn more, call Parks Moss at (843) 815-8808 or Lucas Kinard at (843) 815-8816.

Smart Meetings magazine showcases Hilton Head Island as a small island with big possibilities. The two-page feature highlights major meeting venues, and special opportunities including the chamber’s Hilton Head Island Difference corporate social responsibility program.
“Hilton Head Island is a compact destination loaded with a surprising richness of culture and experience along with restaurants, golf courses, tennis courts, cycling and walking trails, and 12 miles of pristine beaches.”
Hilton Head Island will be featured in an episode of “Getting Away Together,” a reality TV show to be aired nationwide on PBS member stations in early 2012.
“The show will focus on how vacationing together can benefit the emotional, health and overall well-being of families and groups,” said Charlie Clark, chamber vice president of communications.
The casting call went out and eager wanna-be reality hopefuls across the country sent in their entries to win the great getaway with family and friends, as more than 40,000 voters across the country chose their picks. The group chosen for the show will be unveiled on PBS in 2012.

SEPTEMBER BuSiNESS NEwS EdiTiON:
Q&A wItH MIkE ovERtoN, tHE ECotoURISM IMpACtOne of the early advocates of ecotourism on the island, Mike Overton, president and CEO of Outside Hilton Head, has become synonymous with the term, long championing the natural charms of our Lowcountry destination.
This month, the chamber is hosting the Ecotourism & Sustainable Tourism Conference. Overton plays a key role as chairman of the chamber’s ESTC local committee.
CBM: What impact will the international ESTC conference have in further developing the Lowcountry as an ecotourism destination?
Overton: The TIES conference gives our community the opportunity to learn and understand this fast growing-segment of the travel market, and an increased awareness of how our community can operate in a more sustainable manner.
CBM: Tell us about some of the initiatives Outside Hilton Head brings to the community that complement our area’s appeal as an ecotourism destination.
Overton: The Lowcountry is a dream destination for the eco-oriented traveler. Outside Hilton Head offers a comprehensive menu of outings designed to share and grow knowledge and appreciation of the area’s natural, cultural, and historical assets
CBM: How has your business developed to meet the demands of our growing community?
Overton: We began as a simple windsurfing school. We now offer almost any nature based experience imaginable in addition to full service destination management services, team and leadership development programs, and retail stores. Our team worked hard to support area organizations with a focus on preserving our ecosystem and community.
CBM: What role will the Hilton Head Island ESTC local committee play in future initiatives?
Overton: We hope to use the conference as a springboard for the greater community to establish and inspire local collaboration in sustainability. We’re hosting a local roundtable session to begin a dialog that can result in some lasting initiatives. The focus is simple. How can we create a more sustainable community? What is ecotourism and how does the individual person and local business benefit from sustainable practices?
The old adage “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know” is true. But it’s more nuanced than that. Executives who consistently rank in the top 20% of their companies in performance and well-being often have diverse but select networks.
“Many professionals miss key business opportunities by taking a misguided approach to networking. They may remain successful for a time, but often hit a career plateau because their networks couldn’t prompt or support a critical transition,” report business experts Rob Cross, University of Virginia, McIntire School of Commerce, and Robert Thomas, Accenture Institute for High Performance.
High performers know the value of quality relationships, connections which enhance careers and lives in a variety of ways. Effective networks feature strong ties to people who can offer new information and increase your market awareness. Cultivate peers in other divisions to share best practices; build contacts in other industries, and look for those who inspire innovation.

Your business website is one of your most powerful marketing tools. Combined with overall marketing initiatives it can be a vital source for lead generation, increasing sales and reducing advertising costs. Whether you engage in print, TV, radio, or affiliate marketing, all roads should lead back to your website to maximize return on investment.
“Integrate website forms with a marketing automation tool that saves time and money,” advises Nicole McCullum, founder of New York design firm Captive Designs. “You can easily schedule a series of follow up e-mails or phone calls to stay in touch with prospects and move them further along in the pipeline and into a sale.”
Whatever action you want visitors to take should be clearly stated. Every opportunity for action will increase your chances of converting visitors into clients.
