History of ECOR
1946 Federal government established the Division of Research Grants to process NIH grants and fellowships to non-federal institutions and scientists.
1947 • MGH created the General Research Committee
(later renamed the Executive Committee On Research).
• All applications for research grants had to have the Committee’s approval and the Committee met monthly to hear reports on research proposed and in progress.

What is ECOR?
Executive Committee on Research
• One of the key committees named in the MGH by-laws shaping the management structure for the Hospital
• Central body in MGH research governance and reports to the MGH President

ECOR Today
Responsible for providing:
• Strategic guidance to MGH leadership and Trustees on future research growth and priorities within MGH, across Partners, and with affiliated external institutions
• Strategic guidance on development and management of policies on human subjects, scientific proposal review, animal care & studies, research communications, graduate education and research facilities (including research space)

Responsible for providing:
• Programmatic and scientific oversight, and financial subsidy to the Thematic Centers
• Oversight and partial funding to the Office of Research Career Development (ORCD)
• Funding for the new Graduate Student Division
• Internal funding, > $5 million annually in grants, awards and prizes
• MGH-wide conferences and events
