Sustainability Project, which
later becomes Sustainable
San Mateo County.
1992: FOUNDING
SSMC: KEY MILESTONES
SSMC issues its first
Indicators for a Sustainable
San Mateo County in March
1997 and presents its first
Sustainability Awards to
honor local community
members, businesses and
organizations in 1999.
LATE 90'S: FIRST
INDICATORS &
AWARDS ISSUED
Under the direction of Chair
Ruth Peterson, SSMC earns
501(c)(3) nonprofit
status in 2002.
2002: SSMC
BECOMES AN
OFFICIAL
NONPROFIT This project, a competition
designed to show how to
make homes healthier and
more environmentally
sustainable, is developed by
SSMC in collaboration with
CuriOdyssey, Eco Design
Resources and RecycleWorks.
It wins the 2006 EPA
Environmental Achievement
Award.
2006: GREEN
DOLLHOUSE
PROJECT
The Sustainability Ideas Bank is
created in July, with the help of
a Stanford intern. It lists
successful policies and
programs implemented by local
government and businesses to
accelerate sustainability.
