Messagerom its genesis, Aiken Technical College committed its resources to growing prosperity for the citizens, businesses and industries of the Central Savannah River Area.

In recent years, the College has made significant progress toward establishing an infrastructure that can build the skills of our emerging and existing workforce. In 2006, we took full advantage of those assets:

Our health programs continued to grow in order to address a statewide shortage of healthcare workers. Our computer technology students explored cutting edge software applications in our information technology classrooms and labs.

Workforce and Business Development students chose new careers or gained further training to benefit them in existing jobs. Students seeking associate degrees found strong core academic instruction that will allow them to take the next steps of their educations with confidence, or to enter the workforce, if they so choose.

Now a new study has proven the value of our efforts. Business and industry in the CSRA have listed a skilled workforce and the availability of quality worker training programs at ATC and partner agencies as high among the factors they consider when making capital investments in our area.

This is wonderful news, but we mustn’t slow our efforts. Recent layoffs and industry closings have cost thousands of jobs in Aiken County alone. We must continue to leverage the resources that will best position us to meet these potential problems head-on. Working together with our community partners towards this united purpose, Aiken Technical College will continue to fulfill its mission of developing educated, engaged and employable individuals who will help grow prosperity throughout the CSRA

Sincerely,

Susan A. Winsor President

or first generation college attendees and for students seeking more affordable higher education, Aiken Technical College is a first chance and the pathway to self and economic improvement. From displaced workers, employees seeking to up-grade their skills, and those students looking to start their college career close to home, Aiken Technical College is an excellent choice.

Aiken Technical College has been a part of the fabric of this community for 34 years and has helped tens of thousands of students obtain their dream of higher education. Together the college and the Aiken community have grown and diversified, welcoming new businesses and industries, and supporting existing operations with educational programs that promote success. This partnership has been a catalyst for the tremendous economic development in our area.

Private giving helps make it possible for the College to transform the lives of those who are touched by its teaching and public service. Student scholarships, money for faculty and staff professional development, funds for instructional equipment, technology enhancements and state-of-the art classrooms are a few of the ways private dollars are used on campus.

Every year ATC benefits from the generosity of hundreds of contributors. Their reasons for giving vary as widely as their interests and their financial circumstances. What they all have in common is the desire to help strengthen the college and uphold the academic excellence that is essential to its success. If you share that desire, you will want to support the Aiken Technical College Foundation. Our future growth and the community’s growth depend on people like you. Ultimately, we strive to enhance the opportunities at ATC as we work toward fulfilling the college’s goals. Our continued success depends in large part on the generosity of the community. All gifts are greatly appreciated by those we serve.

Jonathan FoussatAutomotive Technology

Jonathan Foussant is passionate about cars, so much so that he studied automotive technology for two years at the Aiken County Career and Technology Center. But once he finished there, he wondered how he would continue his education. “I wanted to go to college while staying close to my family,” he said. “Aiken Technical College was right here at home, but I couldn’t afford to go.” Then he was offered a pair of scholarships, and his life changed. “If I hadn’t received the scholarships, I wouldn’t be here,” he said. “But in a way, that’s the best part about coming to ATC. Knowing that someone has so much faith in my ability to succeed encourages me to work hard.” Jonathan is now studying automotive technology at ATC. He anticipates graduation in 2008. “It had to be cars for me,” he said. “It was my choice. And ATC made it possible.”

Candy RussellNursing

Candy Russell earned her first nursing de-gree from ATC in 2003. Now the hospice nurse has returned to pursue her Associate Degree in Nursing. She will do this while continuing her full-time job with Southern Care and taking care of her family. “I want to further my education,” she said. “It will help me assist my hospice patients in a more productive way.” Candy chose to go into hospice care after writing an essay that required her to interview hospice workers. “It’s a calling,” she said. “I just knew that I wanted to help the dying and their families that remained behind.” But learning is a life-long experience and Candy is excited about being back in the classroom again. “I don’t take my education for granted,” she said. “I want to help other people, not just through my nursing skills, but by giving them a part of myself. My education helps me do that.”
