“ USING PAPER CAN BE
AN ECO-FRIENDLY ACT,
BUT PEOPLE
DON’T KNOW IT.”
Hervé PoncinAntalis Chief Operating Officer

As a leading international distributor
of communications support materials,
Antalis believes that its development
must take into account economic, social
and environmental concerns. Therefore,
Antalis implements Corporate Social
Responsibility initiatives which are
fully aligned with its parent company
Sequana’s global strategy built on 4
pillars: Governance, People, Natural
resources and Product offer.
4
Antalis works closely with its suppliers,
customers and other stakeholders to combine
innovation, added-value and the pursuit of
environmental excellence. The environmental
initiatives undertaken at both group and local
level aim to achieve 3 key objectives:
➊ Ensure Antalis commits to environmental
excellence in its everyday business
➋ Support Antalis customers in their
commitment to eco-responsible paper and
printing
➌ Ensure responsible sourcing of the
products Antalis sells.
Why a new stamp?
In order to ensure that a coherent message
underpins these different actions and to deliver
a consistent, structured, group-wide eco-
responsible strategy, Antalis is launching an umbrella
corporate green identity known as the “Antalis Green Connection”. In tangible terms, this
means that, going forward, such dedicated
eco-responsible communications tool as the
“green stamp”, an immediately recognizable
logo that will set Antalis apart, will appear on all
actions when they refer to eco-responsible
projects or initiatives.
Next are a number of ambitious undertakings
that now carry the Antalis green stamp and
support the group’s objective to lead the way in
environmental responsibility.

➋ SUPPORT ANTALIS CUSTOMERS IN
THEIR COMMITMENT
■ Sustainable development support services
and tools
Antalis offers a number of services (consulting,
training, workshops…) and tools (environmental
calculator, brochures, swatches, samples…)
to help customers understand the various
environmental certifications and regulations
and the potential environmental impact of their
choice of paper. They can also learn about the
technical and application possibilities of each
paper.
■ Eco-responsible product offering
Antalis has built an environmentally-friendly
product offering that is one of the broadest
available on the market today, and that adheres
to stringent environmental credentials. To help the
customers in their eco-responsible paper search,
Antalis has developed the Green Star System to
rank its paper product offering, with a minimum of
3 stars to be considered as eco-responsible.
➌ ENSURE RESPONSIBLE SOURCING OF
THE PRODUCTS
■ Supplier code of conduct
Antalis has implemented a strict Supplier Code
of Conduct in which potential candidates’
performance in terms of social and environ-
mental responsibility is considered in addition
to their strategic fit, service capability and
product quality. The Code also covers such
essential questions as forced and child labour,
discrimination, working hours and wages,
respect and dignity, ethical dealings, health and
safety.
■ Sustainable wood pulp and paper sourcing
policy
Antalis is committed to using timber from
legal, sustainable and well-managed sources
and to supporting initiatives and forestry
management schemes that promote this. Antalis
gives priority to timber carrying internationally-
recognized certification standards such as FSC®
or PEFC™.
■ Product traceability process
In order to better manage its sourcing issues,
Antalis has implemented a new online platform
that centralized all its supplier traceability
information.

A SIMPLE AND EASY UNDERSTOOD SYSTEM
The Green Star System is based on a
universally-recognized point of reference used
to rank services and products.
A SYSTEM TO COMMUNICATE THE
ECO-RESPONSABILITY LEVEL OF THE PAPERS
It incorporates the vital information on the origin
of the fibre and the manufacturing process,
which represent the two main environmental
impacts of paper in its life cycle, and attributes
each paper product a star rating from zero to
five based on environmental performance.
■ Origin of the fibre
For a product to be eco-responsible, the wood
fibres must either be FSC®/PEFC™ certified or
at least 50% recycled from post-consumer
waste with the remaining in line with FSC® or
PEFC™ standards.
■ Manufacturing process
For a product to be defined as eco-responsible,
either the mills that produce the paper must carry
ISO 14001 certification (based on a framework
for the development of an environmental
management system – EMS - and the supporting
audit programme) or the paper must carry the
EU Ecolabel (lifecycle based approach).

Antalis believes that a paper achieves environ-
mental excellence when it is made from at least
50% post-consumer recycled fibres, with
the remaining in line with FSC® or PEFCTM
standards, and also carries EU Ecolabel
certification. Why choosing a recycled paper? What EU Ecolabel guarantees? The two
principles combine to form a virtuous mix,
which will be detailed below.
THE ADVANTAGES OF RECYCLED PAPER
■ To reduce pressure on wood
resources
Recycled fibre comes from
waste collection whereas virgin
fibre comes from natural resources i.e.
wood from trees. Recycling therefore has the
advantage of using existing paper to
produce pulp, hence reducing demand for
wood resources by 24 trees per ton of paper.
■ To save energy and water
Recycled paper mills require less energy, less
water and safer chemicals overall, primarily for
pulp making. Typical savings from producing
recycled paper vs virgin paper are estimated
to be on average 33%1 for energy, 49%
for water1-2 and 37% for greenhouse gas
emissions.
■ To reduce CO2 emissions
Recycling gives paper new life, an
essential benefit of recycled paper,
as the paper can be recycled from
4 to 7 times before its fibres
become too short for recycling.

34% of the global warming impact of a paper
product1. By extending the life cycle of the
original virgin fibres, it is possible to keep carbon
stored in the fibres and help mitigate climate
change until ultimate destruction through
incineration or landfill. Indeed, on average the
production of virgin fibre paper followed by
incineration requires twice as much energy as
recycling paper3.

ARE YOU A 5 -STARS COMPANY?
For any company se r ious abou t
environmental responsibility and aiming
to demonstrate a 5-stars environmental
performance to stakeholders, choosing
recycled paper carrying the EU Ecolabel
is the way to go. Furthermore, opting
for recycled paper no longer means
compromising on quality, performance,
appearance or whiteness as tremendous
progress has been made in its production.

This section highlights most of the Antalis
product ranges granted with 5 green stars,
i.e. produced from a minimum of 50% post-
consumer recycled fibres, with the remaining
in line with FSC® or PEFCTM standards, and
carrying the EU Ecolabel. All these papers
cover a large scope of paper shades (from
natural to high white), hence covering many
paper applications, from commercial brochures
to annual reports, business cards, labelling,
office A3/A4 printouts, envelopes… to name
a few. They also cover all the common printing
technologies: litho-offset, digital, laser and
inkjet copier printers.
