Project summary
The main objective of this research proposal is to establish a green independent system by utilizing the natural resources of wind , solar and fuel cell energy to build an outdoor lighting system as well as a power charging system. The research involves the improvement of the wind power-augmentation shroud technology to increase wind turbine performance and efficiency, thus alleviating the consequence of using conventional energy sources on the environment. Ultimately, the research team seeks to provide benefits not only to the urban society in Malaysia, but to bring free energy sources in rural villages. Hence, impacting society through technological advancement and innovation. Lab scale and working model prototypes of Eco-Greenergy Wind-Solar Outdoor Lighting and Charging station which used the wind power-augmentation shroud technology in Malaysia have proven that the technology can be utilized to harvest wind and solar energy together with the fuel cell to provide lights without being connected to the national grid. Besides, with the additional fuel cell integrated with the system as back up power storage, it can reduce the carbon dioxide emission to the environment while generating power. The power generated by the system not only can be used as outdoor lighting system, but also can be a power charging station which provide electricity for electric vehicle and other usage in future, example electric bicycle.

Related research
In the search for cleaner ways of generating energy, numerous efforts have been carried out in the past few decades. Renewable energy researches, particularly wind and solar have been gaining popularity and recognized as potential sources for clean, inexhaustible and free energies. The concept of on-site renewable energy generation is to extract energy from renewable sources close to the area where energy is required. On-site green energy generation from renewable energy sources in urban and remote settings is regarded to be the next step in the process of reducing dependencies on the usage of conventional power generation using fossil fuels. In low and unsteady wind speed regions where the free-stream wind speed is lower than the rated wind speed of a wind turbine, a wind turbine that has a lower cut-in wind speed is required. Utilising shroud with guide vanes is one of the methods which can provide better VAWTs with an increase in performance. Alam & Golde showed that by applying the cowling design, the spin rate of the turbine increased more than double [1]. The design of barchans dune guide blades by Wang & Zhan showed that the performance of the VAWT can be increased by about 120% when compared to a bare VAWT [2]. Similarly, Pope et al. used stator vanes for a zephyr VAWT to increase the generated output [3]. Moreover, Yao et al. used a cowling tower with baffles blades that surround the VAWT. By adjusting the wind direction, more winds are concentrated on the axial direction of the Savonius rotor and therefore created better positive torque [4]. In this proposal, a novel and innovative idea of exploiting the venturi effect to increase the wind speed (instead of improving the wind energy device itself) before any interaction between the wind and the wind turbine blades takes place was deemed practical. Thus, the wind power-augmentation-shroud integrated with a wind turbine was designed, tested and proven to enhance the performance of a wind turbine by concentrating and guiding the oncoming wind before it interacts with the wind turbine blades. There are numerous applications for power-augmentation-shroud. It can be mounted on top of a lamp post, a building, a tower or even a lighthouse. The flexibility of the power-augmentation-shroud to be designed around various wind turbine types and sizes is an added advantage. The form and function of the design covers the philosophy of the system which also receives public acceptance. Moreover, its design that shrouds the wind turbine acts as a -protective barrier for the wind turbine in case of blade failures. The revolutionary design of the power-augmentation-shroud is able to displace the current wind energy technology. This creates a whole new market within Malaysia which makes the competition in this industry is irrelevant. Reference: [1] Firoz Alam, Steve Golde. The Eco-GreenergyTM Wind-Solar Outdoor Lighting system and Charging station does not only provide a revolutionary design with the integration of the wind power-augmentation shroud technology but is also energy efficient where the technology helps to increase the wind speed by 1.8 times before the free-stream wind interacts with the turbine blades. From lab studies, it was found out that the power-augmentation shroud integrated wind turbine increases the energy output of the wind turbine by 3.48 times. The standalone Eco-GreenergyTM Wind-Solar Outdoor Lighting and Charging system does not only uses solar and wind energy as its main energy source, but the integrated batteries and the fuel cell also serves as a backup energy storage system. The design of the power-augmentation shroud that surrounds the wind turbine blades does not distract the people walking or driving near the system. Moreover, the power-augmentation shroud acts as a cage or barrier that can hold the wind turbine in case of blade failures. Comparing to other competitors in this industry, we are eliminating the use of extra equipment to hold the solar panel and instead using the top plate of the power-augmentation shroud which is a part of the aesthetic design of the system. Through careful thought process and creative thinking, the design of the power-augmentation shroud reduces the cost of a hybrid wind-solar system. In this system, a smaller wind turbine size can generate almost the same power output of a larger wind turbine, if placed in the same location. Moreover, the competitive advantages of the Eco-GreenergyTM raised the attributes of a typical hybrid renewable energy lamp post such as looks and design to a class of its own. The Eco-GreenergyTM system not only lights the surrounding area at night but also harnesses maximum wind and solar energy through the creation of the novel power-augmentation shroud design. Any extra energy generated from the system can be stored in batteries or fed into the national grid. The power-augmentation shroud is a device that employs duct, funnel or shroud around wind turbine, creating venturi effect to speed up wind flow and also adjust airflow direction to increase the wind turbine efficiency. Study on aerodynamic and flow characteristic of duct or funnel around the wind turbine had been carried out over recent years by several researchers with promising results. However, the flow direction and characteristic of ducted wind turbine are still not presented. One of the aims of this project is to explore the relation between duct geometry, wind velocities, wind direction and flow characteristic for optimal flow acceleration, flow angle and power efficiency of power-augmented wind turbine. This research project involves the design of different configurations of power-augmentation shroud models, fabrication of the scaled down models and wind tunnel testing. The wind tunnel testing over a considerable range of velocities would be carried out; included flow characteristic visualization, wind velocities measurement, pressure measurement and wind turbine power efficiency measurement. The wind tunnel test result will be correlated and validated with the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation result for performance evaluation. Investigation would benefit wind energy development and implementation in international market especially weak wind region such urban areas.

The Design Optimization, Fabrication and Testing of 3-in-1 Wind-Solar Hybrid Renewable Energy and Rain Water Harvester
Assc. Prof. Dr. Chong Wen Tong
University of Malaya
A novel design of wind turbine and guide-vane (surrounds the wind turbine) has been developed and analyzed to validate the feasibility on its application in urban area. The first design of power-augmentationguide-vane (PAGV) that optimizes the performance of vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) has been modeled using CAD. From the initial conceptualized configuration of wind energy system, further optimization was carried out through computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The final design of PAGV integrated VAWT and the test rig has been fabricated for wind tunnel testing. With the determination of optimum configuration (wind energy system with solar panel and rain water collection feature) and proper load matching, the prototype for field tests was designed. From the testing, the PAGV is capable of improving the VAWT performance (increases RPM and lowers cut-in speed) where the wind energy output can be more than 5 times (with PAGV that has 2 times the size of VAWT) compared to bare VAWT.
The idea of diffuser augmented wind turbine for natural wind will be adapted to the unnatural wind. Similar configuration, i.e. wind turbine is equipped with the guide-vanes and diffuser to speeds up the wind speed and directs to an optimum angle for better performance of wind turbine.

Wind-Solar Hybrid Renewable Energy Generation System with PAGV and Incorporated Rain Water Collection Feature for High Rise Buildings or Structures
Assc. Prof. Dr. Chong Wen Tong
University of Malaya
The feasibility of wind-solar hybrid renewable energy generation system with power-augmentation-guidevane (PAGV) and incorporated rain water collection feature for high rise buildings or structures is investigated. The study is based on the recent weather data at urban area where the system is proposed to be installed. Three weather stations were set-up on top of the selected buildings (UM Engineering Tower, Instacom-Subang High Tech Park and Green Energy Office - PTM Bangi for collecting the weather data (wind speed, solar radiation, rainfall, etc.). A building with a height of 220 meters situated in an urban area is considered in the study. From the measured data and data from meteorological department, solar and wind system are estimated to generate 108 MWh/year and 86.2 MWh/year energy respectively. Rain water harvesting system is estimated to save 1025 kWh/year of energy needed to pump water. The techno -economic analysis show that the payback period for the system is 14 years.
The same concept and principle of the PAGV will be utilized for the forward-swept wing VAWT to improve its performance. Furthermore, the proposed project will be used in the unnatural wind energy. A comparison of system feasibility between these two system will be made particularly for Malaysia application.

Flow Characteristics Investigation of a Novel Power-Augmentation-Guide-Vane of Hybrid Wind-Solar Renewable Energy Generation System
Assc. Prof. Dr. Chong Wen Tong
University of Malaya
An innovative device that integrates wind-solar hybrid energy generation system and rain water collector called power-augmentation-guide-vane (PAGV) has been introduced. It overcomes the inferior aspect on the low wind speed by guiding and increasing the speed of the high altitude free-stream wind before entering the wind turbine (straight-bladed vertical axis wind turbine, VAWT in this project) at center portion. The PAGV replaces the free air-stream from wind by multiple channels of speed-increased and directional-controlled air-stream. With the PAGV, this lift-type VAWT can be self-started and its size can be reduced for a given power output. By integrating the PAGV with the VAWT, the predicted power generated (at free-stream wind speed of 3.5 m/s) is 1.25 times higher than the VAWT that has the same size as the PAGV. This new wind energy generation configuration should generate interest in the international market, even for regions with weaker winds.
In this work, guide vanes is developed to guide the discharged air flow from the exhaust air system based on the optimal geometry of the novel guide vanes designed. The purpose of the guide vanes is to improve the power generated from the energy recovery system while at thesame time improve performance of the original exhaust air system. The influences of the guide vanes on the performace of the forward swept VAWT, air flow and blockage effect will be investigated.
