Dept. of Chinese Language, International College of Chinese Studies The International College of Chinese Studies (ICCS) of East China Normal University (ECNU) is one of the national
bases for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (TCFL) as well as Teaching Chinese to the Speakers of Other
Languages (TCSOL) in South China. It is also a teaching base for overseas Chinese, set up by Overseas Chinese
Office of the State Council and one of the test centers of the Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) authorized by Hanban.
The Chinese Language Department is committed to the undergraduate program of Chinese Language provided to
foreign students, with five concentrations, respectively, on Chinese Language, Business Chinese, International
Business (bilingual: Chinese & English) ,International Business( bilingual: Chinese & Japanese) and Chinese Physical
Education. It admits overseas Chinese and foreign students holding diplomas from senior high schools or above
and with Chinese not being their native language.
Chinese Language Introduction to the specialty:
This program is designed to train competent professionals, well versed in the Chinese language, with sufficient
knowledge about other branches of learning to meet the increasing needs of the international community. After four
years of learning, students are expected to have reached Level 6 of new HSK (Chinese proficiency test), have a decent
grasp of the basic theoretical knowledge of the Chinese language, and the five skills of listening, speaking, reading,
writing, and translating, as well as an all-around knowledge of Chinese culture, history and society, cross-cultural
communicative competence, and the ability to work in the Chinese context, including the use of IT software in Chinese.

○ The 1st, 2nd, and 4th year of the program are attended at East China Normal University in Shanghai; The 3rd year is attended at a university abroad (University of Manchester and University of Sheffield in Britain, University of Pennsylvania and University of California San Diego in USA). The tuition is about 80,000RMB per year in Britain (pay directly to the University), accommodation fee(on campus) is about 50,000RMB. The tuition is about 120,000RMB per year in the US and the living expense is about 150,000RMB.
● Study at East China Normal University in the 1st, 2nd and 4th academic year when they will study Chinese, elementary Japanese and other related courses, and study in Japan in the 3rd academic year when they will study Japanese and other related courses. Students are also required to achieve Level 2 of JLPT in Japanese. Students can do a part-time work within 28 hours per week after they get a work permit in Japan. The tuition is about 50,000RMB per year in Japan and the life expense is about 80,000RMB.

School of Foreign Languages English DepartmentFounded in 1951, ECNU’s English Major was awarded as a Shanghai & National Characteristic Specialty by Shanghai
Municipal Education Committee and Ministry of Education of China. The English department has established a
complete disciplinary system including Linguistics, English Teaching, and British, American, and Australian Literature

English Major for Overseas StudentsThis program is designed to train competent professionals well versed in both Chinese and English with sufficient

This program admits non-native Chinese speakers with high school qualification and Chinese level of above 180 scores in HSK3. It is a practice-oriented professional undergraduate program, with an emphasis on the development of professional knowledge and skills of teaching Chinese to speakers of other languages, cultural understanding and cross-cultural communication. The core courses include Teaching Chinese as a Second Language, Chinese Linguistics, Chinese lecture, Chinese History, and so on.
