August 2017 Solar Eclipse Fact Sheet Date: August 21 st , 2017 Start of partial eclipse: 11:56am Maximum eclipse: 1:27pm End of partial eclipse: 2:54pm Percent eclipse: 89% as seen from Starkville, MS Nearest big city with totality: Nashville, TN What is it? A solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the Earth and the Sun. This can only happen during the new moon phase. Due to the tilt in the moon’s orbit around the Earth, solar eclipses do not occur during every new moon. The shadow of the moon on the Earth is called the umbra and the outer shadow is called the penumbra. What to look out for Stars and planets in a daytime sky Animal twilight behavior – birds chirping, cows coming in, etc. Safety DO NOT LOOK DIRECTLY AT THE SUN DURING THE ECLIPSE! With part of the solar disk blocked, the light from the Sun is diminished but is still enough, when focused onto the back of the eye, to cause bad and permanent eye damage. Use a solar filter, solar eclipse glasses, a pin-hole viewer or other specialized equipment to view the eclipse. Otherwise, the eclipse serves no danger to the community.
