It’s the returnof theSTTHE wraps have been lifted
on the production version ofFord’s stylish new Focus STfive-door – revealing themodel performance car
enthusiasts have been waiting for.And for British and European fansof the Blue Oval badge there will bean equally high powered estate STWagon model launched alongsidethe hatchback next year.
The new generation Focus STwill be more powerful, more fuelefficient and, says Ford, will raisethe bar once again when it comes tohandling.
A result of the combined effortsof Ford Team RS in Europe and theSpecial Vehicles team in the UnitedStates, this is also Ford’s first globalperformance car – to be madeavailable in 40 countries with onlyminimal changes, due to regionallegislation.
Performance comes from aturbocharged four-cylinder 2.0-litreFord EcoBoost engine, providing250PS of power and 360Nm oftorque, while CO2 emissions andfuel consumption are cut by morethan 20 per cent compared to theprevious-generation ST.
And the powerplant is mated to asix-speed manual transmission
with specially revised gearing toproduce the maximum punch fromeach throw of the gearstick.
The ST also looks predictablyeye-catching, from Ford’s signaturemesh grille at the front, through thesculpted side skirts, rear bumperwith diffuser-style vents and roofspoiler on both models.
Tangerine Scream is the newsignature production colour, whilethere will also be paint jobsavailable in Performance Blue,Race Red and White.
Ford says it found the lure ofcreating an ST estate modelirresistible.
“We know many Europeanbuyers favour the carrying capacity
of a wagon, but still want thedriving excitement andperformance a five-door can offer,”said ST chief programme engineerMatthias Tonn.
“With such a stylish wagon in thenew Focus range, we had the idealbasis on which to create a unique
niche model for these customers –and it will be just as exciting todrive as the five-door.”
Three trim options, ST1, ST2 andST3, will be available, the standardgrade including features like clothRecaro seats, keyless start, front
door scuff plates with ST logo andstandard ST rear bench with centrearmrest. Wheels are 18-inch alloysand there’s no an additional‘Performance Pack’ option whichoffers the wheels in black with ahigh contrast red finish on theperformance brake calipers.

MOTORSNissan Juke 1.6 DIG-T Acenta Premium
NNiissssaann’’ss JJuukkeebbooxxgglloorryy
IT’S rare these days for acompact car to come along witha design that blows everythingelse out of the water. That’s thecase though with the
British-built Nissan Juke, a realjoker in the pack when it comes tothe expanding crossover scene.
This baby brother to the topselling Qashqai has just completedits first year of sale, finding afraction short of 15,000 homes – afigure that while far fromunacceptable, nonetheless ensures adegree of exclusivity.
In a way that’s a shame becauseon looks alone you would havethought this Tonka toy of a carwould have people queuing roundthe block to lay their mitts on one.
Nissan’s own description of theJuke is literally a car of two halves -the lower part is pure SUV withchunky wheels, wide tyres, extended ground clearance and arobust stance.
But the top half is unadulteratedsports car with a high waistline, slim visor-like side glass graphicsand a coupe-style falling roof line.
And the coupe effect isunderpinned by rear doors whichhave their handles hidden in theframe of the door, not a newinnovation but definitely aneffective one.
Inside, the eye-catcher is amotorcycle fuel tank-inspiredcentre console with high glosspiano black finish, while theinstruments are clustered under acowl behind the steering wheel.
Given that this is a compact carthere’s no shortage a space for five, including a refreshinglycomfortable rear centre seatingposition, with ample headroom allround.
In fact the only area in which theJuke could do better is with regardto boot space, though what you doget is split level with some hiddenstorage opportunities.
Out on the road, the Nissancertainly delivers and while thenormally aspirated 1.6-litre petroland 1.5 dCi diesel engines performadequately, the 1.6 direct injectionturbo petrol unit in the testedmodel is a cracker.
Trim levels are the familiar Visia,Acenta and Tekna grades, the latterpair featuring a dynamic controlset-up which alters the car’s throttleand suspension settings toaccommodate normal, sports or ecomodes and changes the visualdisplay colour from red to blue
accordingly. No surprise that in sports setting
the Juke really rocks with swiftacceleration and a stiffer ride.
With every car including plentyof standard kit – the likes of electricwindows, air-con, alloy wheels, electronic stability controls, sixairbags and sports seats – and the
higher grade ones addingBluetooth, USB ports and cruisecontrol, you certainly get bang forthe buck as prices start at £13,395.
That’s for a car that the kidsloved and even with the 190PS turboengine was able to return anaverage fuel figure of just under 40miles per gallon.
