A resident, Malindi Majola told Echo that it has been months they had not received their mail. She said they have even raised the matter at the last community meeting they had. “It has been a concerning issue for a while, especially with the letters from the municipality. The place known as the Willowfountainquarry has been existing for more than 20years,andovertheyearsmanypeoplehavelosttheirlivesbyeitherdrowningorcommittingsu-icide by jumping off the 70 metre cliff.
Residents who spoke to Echo said that al-though the quarry has been existing for such along time, community members have neverbenefited anything from it, except bearing thescars of its disastrous nature.
Speakingonbehalf of the community,ward15 South African National Civic Organization(Sanco)member JeanetteMolefe said: “Weareworried about our safety, as sometimes stones
that are produced there, break our windowsand damage our houses. Most of our houses,especiallyinUnit18,havecracksallover,whichalso decreases their value. Quarries produceexpensive stones which generate a lot of mon-ey, but as communitymemberswe have neverbenefited anything. There is a high unemploy-ment rate, and our youth can benefit a lotthrough learnerships. We demand bursariesforouryouth so theycanalso learnabout theseexpensive stones”.
Others raised health concerns, saying thatthey have developed diseases because of dust. The quarry’s management was given sevendays to respond.
Quarry manager Mohammed Ali said: “Weare engaging with the councillor and wardcommittee members on the issue.

ECHO
THEEconomicFreedomFighterspartyhasstartedselling itself to the South African voters but itdoes not have its own policies. Instead it copied
and pasted the ANCYL’s policies which are directlydrawn from the freedom charter.
In simple terms, Floyd Shivambu and Julius Malemastole ANC policies and made them their own. There is a lot I can say about Malema and his party
but the first obvious one is that he is not to be trustedbyanyone;notevenhisclosefriends.Malemachangeshis mind like the Cape Town sky changes its weather.Who would forget when Malema stood in front of thecountry through the media, he always excites, tellingus that Thabo Mbeki was this country’s biggest problem? Mbeki was cast by him, called him names andmade him an enemy of the people. Not even four years after that we were told by the
same man that Mbeki was the greatest man that everlived. He worshipped him and thanked him for whathe achieved in his administration simply because ofhis hate for Zuma. Zuma, the man he confessed hislove for, was later said to be the worst leader this country has ever had and our biggest mistake; a man he(Malema) was made to believe by his friends and themedia to have put in power in the Polokwane.I simply cannot trust Malema because he changes his
mind like a child in a toystore. The media and some within the ANCYL during his tenure made his head big. They made him believe thathe made Zuma. That he gave Zuma to us South Africans, making him our president. Thus he now throughthe same media that made his head big, apologisefor giving us Zuma.Malema did not give us Zuma. Zuma gave himself to
us the people. Zuma gave himself to South Africawhen he joined the ANC at the age of 16 and later became an active member of the ANC’s armed wing Umkhonto Wesizwe at the age of 22. Zuma continued tohand himself to the ANC and South Africa when hewas arrested in 1963 and sent to Robben Island wherehe was to spend the following 10 years. He selflesslyreestablished ANC underground structures in Natalbetween 1974 and 1975. Zuma continued to hand himselftotheANCandSouthAfricawhenheworkedhandin hand with Thabo Mbeki in Swaziland and Mozambique exiled by the apartheid government later healing the wounds of the Soweto Uprising youth of 1976that were taking refuge in those countries in 1976. Inthe same year Zuma handed himself to the ANC National Excecutive Committee. In 1980 Zuma furtherdeepened his commitment to the organisation andheaded the ANC’s Intelligence Department. Malema
would later be born in 1981; 23 years after Jacob Zumajoined and worked for the ANC.
Malema’s contribution to the liberation strugglewould later be illegally taking down National Party(NP) posters in the 1994 elections. While he was taking down and tearing NP posters,
Zuma was working hand in hand with ANC leaders likeNelson Mandela, Mbeki and Walter Sisulu in the negotiations and the drafting of the South African constitution. After the country’s first democratic election, when Julius was only 14 years, Zuma became theANC’s chairperson in 1994 and MEC for Economic Affairs and Tourism in KZN. To get to my point; JacobZuma did not need Julius to get the presidency of theANC and South African government. He has been working and earned enough credentialsto get these positions since he joined the ANC fromhis early age of 16.This point would later be proven fact in Mangaungwhen Zuma won with a landslide victory againstKgalema Montlante when Malema was history.Zuma is 100 times more than the man, leader and
strategist Malema is.I know, many of you will compare Zuma with Malema. You will ask: why complain about Malema in theGupta and Nkandla days?Government scandals happen everywhere; they happen in America, president Obama has his own scandals. They happen in UK, in China; all governmentshave their own scandals. We don’t want them, wehate them but they are there; they will always occur. One needs to ask themselves then how many scan
dals would occur if Malema would become a president. Malema’s decision to start a political party wasnot based on moral or Freedom Charter grounds; itwas based on his greed for power and money and hissubliminal talks are a living testimony to this.Malema was the one who said his blood is green, blackand gold; that he will never leave the ANC. He wasthe one begging the delegate with letters in Mangaung to reconsider their decision to expel him. He isthe one who promised to change. But when his pleadid not work out and his life started to turn upsidedown he started realising that he is poor and powerless. In an interview on SAfm, Malema said if the ANC had
not taken his farm after it took his house in Sandtonand his millions he would have stayed. Only ignorantpeople believe Malema when he says he left the ANCbecause its liberal and does not want to nationaliseth mines or because he was expelled. Malema, unlikeZuma, is young; he would have made his way back tothe ANC. Political parties are not like businesses, youdon’t get fired and never come back. Leadershipchanges and so does the weather within the politicalparty. He could have waited for his time; until when,I don’t know. I am sure Nelson Mandela too did notknow how many years he would wait to get out prison. The same followers Malema has are the same he waslying to while he the ANCYL president. He went to thepeople and shouted that: “We are poor and hungry,we want Economic Freedom” when he was swimmingin millions. The Economic Freedom Fighters he is now calling foris the one he lost; he was a Sandton resident, drovetop class cars and wore only the finest. Malema wasnot hungry or poor like most of his followers were andstill are; he had Economic Freedom and soon lost it.His friends like the former jailbird who, like him, wentmysteriously from being a pauper to be a millionaire,Kenny Kunene, will help him. We’ve already read opportunistic open letters trying to persuade and kill theANC’s image by Kenny Kunene. Again, the same mediathat inflated Malema’s head is doing the same to Kenny.Suddenly, he becomes a saint just few months after
he confessed to raping young girls and his desires tostart selling pornography. I refuse to trust Malema because I can’t imagine South Africa with him as a president and Kenny Kunene his deputy. I don’t trust Juliusbecause he would ruin all attempts to Unite this country and turn us into another Zimbabwe; chasing whitepeople away, chasing investors away, ruining oureconomy and turning this country not into a bananabut into Kenny’s Sushi Nation. The ANC and EFF are fundamentally different. Unlike
EFF, the ANC is not owned by a person or a group ofpeople. It was not owned by Nelson Mandela whenhe was president and was not owned by Mbeki, it’salso not owned by Zuma, the people own it.
Zuma did not need Malema to be presidentEsethu Hasane

Lekgwathi: Sinister forcesat Bucs

In an explosive ‘Captain’s Cor-ner’ column in yesterday’s DailySun–whichisworthareadforanysoccer fan – Lekgwathi says “poli-tics ruined what could have beena great sporting weekend for theteam”.
PlatinumStars lifted their firstMTN8 trophy at the weekend, af-terBucscompletely lost theircom-posure in the penalty shoot-out.
Lekgwathi was one of the sur-prise exclusions from Bucs’ line-up, but told KickOff.com after thegamethathe“respects thecoach’sdecision”.
Sifiso Myeni was also absent, but the club insisted after thematch that he had a slight knockand “could not be risked” on theday.
FanswerealsosurprisedtoseeAndile Jali walking onto the pitchahead of the game, despite Lehlo-honoloMasalesa’s name being onthe teamsheet, fuelling specula-
tion that the coach’s choices werebeing undermined.
Platinum Stars veteran de-fender, and former Pirates player,BensonMhlongoaddedmorecon-troversy to the evening, when heclaimed straight after the match,on television, that Pirates askedhim to sign insurance documentsto end his career following a kneeinjuryhesufferedin2009,adding:“I’m happy to beat them.”
Lekgwathi has now addedmorefuel to thefire,revealingyes-terday in theDaily Sun that he be-lieves“sinister forces”are therea-son hewas dropped – but empha-sises thathedoesnotblameDeSa.
The Bucs veteran also claimsthat the same thing happened tohim under Ruud Krol in the 2010TelkomKnockoutFinal,wherePi-rates lost 3-0 to Kaizer Chiefs.
Lekgwathi alleges that certainpeople at the club are “jealous”that he is still playing, adding:“they want to destroy me”.

Presently, we seem to think thatBafanaBafana can become aworldclass team in a country where thejuniors are not playing. The biggestchallengeasDannyhimselfcorrect-ly identifies is the quality of coach-ing.
South African footballers are aproductofourcoaches.Wedefinite-
ly need to improve the quality andquantity of coaches in this country.Youdonotbecomeagoodcoachon-ly by winning local competitions.South African coaches should com-parewiththebestthattheworldcanoffer.
Problems of South African foot-ball will take many years to solve. The training of more coaches andthequalityof trainingdoesnotsolvecoaching challenges. We also needto change our mindsets in relationtoworkethic.Itdoesnothelptohavehighly educated but lazy people.Presently, money and materialisticthings aremore important than thework to most of us.
Issuesofservicedeliveryarealsoclosely linked to the game of foot-ball. Our country has not trans-formed in terms of football facilitiesat grassroots level. Young boys andgirlsdonothavetrainingfacilitiesintheir communities.TheSportsMin-ister talks about school sports andyet many schools in Black areas donot have any football fields.
Wewishthenewexecutivegetallthe support they need from everySouth African. Patriotism is moreabout doing positive things for yourcountry than yourself.
Presently, we have failed to in-culcate the spirit of love for one’scountry. I hope they will show thisthrough their leadership style. In-terestof thegamemustcomebeforepersonal interests. Unzima lomthwalo!

THE ward 34 community sports daywill now take place this comingSaturday as it could not go ahead
last Saturday due to bad weather conditions.Ward 34 incorporates areas such as Panorama, Eastwood, Glenwood, Thembalihle and Cinderella Park and Panorama Primary School has been earmarked for the event.According to organisers, the event will
start at 7:30 am with a fun run/walk(2,5km).“The one day communitygames were to berounded off lastweekend but theunkind rainyweather and dangerousconditionsforced us to rerescheduleitforthiscoming Saturday,”said event coordinator and founder ofthe ward 34 community sport day, Jerry Barnes.
“Some teams, parents andspectators came and really wanted to goahead with the games, but the conditions were bad. It was very cold, rainingnonstop, the pitch slippery and we decided it was not safe for our community, especially the children to play.“I’m just glad that we all settled for Saturday,”continuedtheveteransportsjournalist. The Department Of Sports and Recrea
tion uMgungundlovu district manager,Busi Nkomo, said the children wanted toplay but parents, organisers and teammanagers were able to convince them.“The children just wanted to carry on
with the business, but we told them thatthe conditions were not safe to play. Those kids just can’t wait to get into the
ground and play. They also can’t wait forSaturday and were are all looking forward to have fun,”said Nkomo.Barnes said besides the fun run/walk,
soccer games (boys and girls), they willbe other sport codes on the day’s program such as netball, skipping (ingqathu) and otherindigenous sporting codes.“This week, I had a couple of calls from
other areas such as Copesville, Zinketheni, Northdale, Ntuthukoville and
Haniville. People were askingto bring more netball
teams and ingomagroups (traditional
Zulu dance).“I’m saying any
team (boys, girls, seniors, O35oldtimers or juniors),from any area,
sports or traditional,
anything, come, participate and play with
us.“ResidentsofWard34arevery
accommodating and welcomes the visiting teams. It’s just a day of playing andfun and everybody will win something. We are only asking people to bring themselves something to eat because wedon’t have a sponsor to feed people.“I repeat, people are coming to play. Theywill win medals and trophies, we don’thave food,” said Barnes.
He said the aim of the event is to seethe community playing and being madeaware of social ills such as drugs, alcohol, abusive behaviour and HIV/Aids and howto prevent them or manage HIV/Aids.Old clothes, blankets and food parcels
will be collected for the recent JikaJoeinformal settlement victims whosehomes were destroyed by fire.
