More than 1 000 houses in various wards in the greater Edendale area were demolished to make way for new houses as they were deemed harmful because of the wire. The housing project has been stalled for almost three years as there were problems with the contractor. Speaking at an Exco meeting last Thursday, Msunduzi municipal man- ager Mxolisi Nkosi said that the wire- wall rectification project was stalled due to challenges. “This human settlements project should be in progress by January next year, as a new contractor has been ap- pointed,”he said. City mayor Chris Ndlela said: “Beneficiaries of these houses are disadvantaged people, and this came at the right time when people are in dire need of housing”. Meanwhile, 22 low cost houses have been approved for construction in the Snathing area, with two having already been completed. At KwaPata’s Unit H area, where the issue of illegal occupancy is rife, 3 204 sites have been approved for construction. The Willowfontein housing project, which was also stalled due to the old project not being finished, will resume again next year.

LAST Friday, 6 December 2013,thewhole worldwoke up to thenews that the first democrati-
cally elected black president, “Tata”Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, had de-partedattheageof95afteralongbat-tle with a lung infection.
President Jacob Zuma hadannounced Madiba’s death at theUnionBuildings inPretoria theprevi-ous night, just before midnight. Hesaid Tata Mandela died peacefully inthe company of his family on 5December at exactly 8.50 pm at hishome in Gauteng in Vilakazi Street.
Citizens of Pietermaritzburgshared their feelings about this inter-national icon with NOMPENDULONGUBANE
PHOTO: NOMPENDULO NGUBANE“I was saddened by the death ofMandela because he was such agood and truthful leader. When Iheard the news about his passingon, I went to bed without any food.Mandela touched my heart in manyways, he was a God send and aleader who was dedicated to his jobof making this country a bettercountry for all. May his soul rest inpeace. He will forever live in ourhearts”.
“I feel thatMandela’sdeath hasbeen exaggerated. Mandeladoesn’t evenknow us andwe are mourning for him.Who are wereally mourning for? It’strue that hefought for usto be free, buthis death hasbeen exaggerated”.
“I’m not a Mandela fan and I feelthat his death has been exaggerated. Mandela is not God and peopleare praising and worshiping him asif he was God. We do have otherheroes, such as Steve Biko, whofought for liberation but none ofthem got the exposure thatMandela is currently receiving. Theyhad no news channel like it is happening with Mandela. None of thishappened when Jesus Christ diedyears ago, it’s an exaggeration”.
“I also feel that his death hasbeen exaggerated to the extremefor no reason. Mandela was notthe only struggle icon who foughtfor South Africa to be a democraticcountry. We do have other peoplewho were exiled. He is not theonly one and people must not giveall the praises to him as if he wasthe only one who fought forfreedom.”
“I guess each individualhas his or her ownreaction to Mandela’sdeath. The news brokemy heart because welost somebody whofought for peace andwe lost somebody whocreated unity in SouthAfrica. My father is fromMozambique and Graca(Mandela’s) wife is alsofrom Mozambique. Thatrelationship grew thelove of the old man inmy heart and that’swhy I felt so much painwhen I heard that hewas gone”.

The multi-talented Pastor Ben-jamin Dube closed the much antici-pated and successful Gospel Blesti-val with an hour of praise and wor-ship by belting out the songs thatmade everybody sing along - evenDudu Khoza from Ukhozi FM couldnot resist singing and dancing toDube’s energetic music sound.

Lead from the back ...and let others believe they are in front
THE saintly nature of NelsonMandela’s life, contributionand recognition cannot be
disputed. It is easier to reflect onthe life of a person when he isdead. And to know that Mandelalivedfrom1918to2013isonitsownunbelievable.Looking at his life as the magnificent story that it is, of course thereare many points where he couldhave died, that is, before he wentto prison, when he was in prison, and after he was released fromprison. But it did not happen. He died peacefully in the companyof loved ones at his Johannesburghome on the night of 5 December2013 and the whole world pausedand talked about him and himalone.I wonder how it feels like to be a
saint that refused to be recognisedas such. I mean, Madiba had all thequalities of a saint. Like the LordJesus Christ whose ministry lastedfor a short period, yet his legacy, influence, impact and leadershipis forever, Madiba only worked inpublic office for one term, yet hepersonifies the achievements ofthe 1994 political settlement andcordial race relations all over theworld. The assumption is that God does
not keep His special people whomHe is using for a greater purposefor too long because they might becorrupted, tainted, diminished instature or accumulate a worldlyblemish that would underminethe long–term purpose andmeaning of their lives.A worldclass thinker, and simple
leader, who recognised that if hispeople’s stomachs remain hungry, the long walk to political freedomwould have been meaningless,Madiba dwarfs us individually and
collectively with his practical wisdom and understanding of therealities and needs of the majority, and we can only try to emulatehim.I wish I had had a chance to interview Madiba as a journalist. Iwould have asked him how it feltto walk into prison and stay for solong with your fellow comrades, and know deep down in your heartthat the political discussions thatwere destined to make you thevery first president of a democratically elected government of a richcountry should have happenedright around the time you werelocked up in jail. The closest I could get to Madiba
was when he visited the Universityof Natal as the political dialoguewith the then apartheid governmentwasinprogress, andhecameto our campus in the company ofthe likes of the legendary, the late,Chris Hani.At that time, my question to theANC leadership was around mymain grave concern about the socalled blackonblack violenceand how the ANC was managingthat in the light of counterrevolutionary activity that Africa waswitnessing in Mozambique,Namibia and Angola. And of course, he only recited my
question, and my leader’s voicecalled my name: “Comrade Piwehas asked…”, but then, in his typical humility, he allowed his ANCcomrades to answer other questions we had posed as students. But again I got very close to him
when I had a privilege of organising a group of disabled youngstersfrom a KZN school to sing, danceand recite poetry for him when hewas president of the country. I hadthe honour of penning the poems. After raising funds for the team tocamp and rehearse in preparationfor one of the mighty Madiba’sbirthdays, I had the privilege ofwatching him very closely sittingcomfortably with the ANC’s thenKZN leader Zweli Mkhize, watching the production I had put together with the help of the well
known KZN late performing artscoach, Lucky Mavundla, of theWinston Churchill Theatre.I know that it would have beenharmless at that time to walkstraight to him and greet him andshake his hand, but I refrainedfrom doing it and was satisfiedwith watching him enjoying ourshow. And of course, I have joined mil
lions of people all over the worldin dirtying my hands each yearwhen we remember the day thissaint was born on July 18, and ofcourse the practice has been getting more and more spiritual everyyear. With verve, many South Africans stand up and do somethingspecial on this auspicious day inJuly.Obviously there was something ofan artist about Madiba – the dresscode (i.e. the Madiba shirts), thelove for the arts and artists, andsports (he was a boxer himself),and children (hence the MandelaChildren’s Foundation) – it was soclear to see. Let alone his love forwriting and drawing pictures. It isnot surprising that he dies at atime when a new film about his lifethat has been made by a fellowSouth African, Anand Singh, is enthralling the world. We have only just started to celebrate Madiba. We will celebratehim for a very long time to come.My most favourite moment of himwas when Cuban leader, FidelCastro, came to visit South Africafor the first time after Mandela’srelease. And there was Madiba, trying to offer him a hand to shake.I just liked the way Castro pushedaway Madiba’s hand and gave hima warm embrace instead. It was an embrace that said: “My
darling brother and comrade inarms, we have come a long way –here we are today leading our people to freedom and selfrealisation.” God bless you, Madiba – youare an instrument of God and likeJesus Christ, you will always be inour hearts.* Simphiwe Mkhize is a local poet, creative writer and journalist.
Thankyou, Madiba an instrument of God rests in peace
