Star-formation rate (SFR) and gas surfaces densities for the total c2d andGB clouds (light blue squares), the Taurus cloud (black square), c2d Class I and Flat spectral energydistribution YSOs ( green and magenta stars or inverted triangles for upper limits), and LIR > 104.5 L! massiveclumps (dark yellow diamonds) are shown. The range of gas surface densities for the spirals and circumnuclearstarburst galaxies in the Kennicutt (1998b) sample is denoted by the gray horizontal lines. All these studies consistently show that !(SFR), especially for massive stars, is stronglylocalized to dense gas and is much higher (for !gas > 100 M! pc"2) than in the extragalacticSchmidt relations (Kennicutt 1998b, Bigiel et al. 2008). This offset between the extragalactic and

No. 6] Infrared SEDs of Galaxies in the AKARI All Sky Survey 1201
Fig. 27. Velocity-integrated flux density of the 21-cm emission (Sint) versus angular size (!P90), for the AKARI-SDSS (left) and AKARI-HIPASS(right) samples. The grey dots are for galaxies whose infrared emission was not detected by AKARI. The solid lines correspond to several values of theH I column density, !H I, as indicated in the panels (Sint / MH I=d
2L, !P90 = R=dA, and hence !H I / Sint=!
2P 90). For these solid lines we assumed
a redshift z = 0.02 that is typical for the samples here, though the dependence on z is very small only by the cosmological effect proportional to (1 + z).
and (16), we find
e !
MH= 0:24 Uh ŒGyr"1" ; (27)
and the upper limit of Uh;max # 50 is translated into the upperlimit of e;max # 10 Gyr"1. Then, the systematic change ofthe UTIR–Uh relation can be explained if there is a funda-mental upper limit on SFE by the physics of star forma-tion (see subsection 6.2 for more discussion on the origin ofthis upper limit).
If this upper limit exists, the distribution case B2 is notallowed when UTIR > Uh;max. For case B2, star formationmust occur within a thin layer of a disk whose dust columndensity is !d # !d;crit (or !H # !H;crit # 102 Mˇ pc"2,adopting a typical dust-to-hydrogen ratio). Then, there isa maximum of the surface SFR density [!SFR ! =.#R2/]for case B2 determined by e;max and !H;crit, correspondingto UTIR # Uh;max. When !SFR is higher than this, the gascolumn density of the star-forming layer must proportionallyincrease beyond !H;crit because of the limit of e;max, andhence !dIR / !SFR / UTIR, while Uh becomes constant atUh;max. This situation corresponds to case B1 rather than B2,and the transition from B2 occurs at around UTIR # Uh;max.
This result should have some implications for the well-known Kennicutt–Schmidt law on the plane of !H–!SFR. Wewill discuss about this issue in more detail in subsection 6.2.
6. Discussion
6.1. Paucity of Optically Thin Galaxies and RadiativeFeedback?
We have found that the galaxies studied here are welldescribed by the distribution case B1 or B2, meaning thatthey are optically thick to dust-heating radiation on a galacticscale ($ tot
d;e! & 1). This is consistent with the distribution ofthe infrared-to-optical luminosity ratio (figure 16); the distri-bution extends down to LTIR=Lr # 1 with a sudden drop
of the galaxy number at LTIR=Lr < 1, indicating a paucityof optically thin galaxies ($ tot
d;e! . 1). This is also indicatedby the sequence of MdIR=MZ.H I/ / !"1
Z.H I/ in figure 25. Ifthere are a significant number of optically thin galaxies, suchgalaxies should appear in the region of !Z.H I/ . 1Mˇ pc"2
with a constant value of MdIR=MZ.H I/ # 1, corresponding to!d . !d;crit and MdIR=Md # 1. However, such galaxies arenot found, and the sequence seems to stop at !d # !d;crit
($ totd;e! # 1).If the optical thickness to dust-heating radiation does not
have any effect on the galaxy formation efficiency, fine-tuningwould be required for the sharp drop of galaxy distributionaround $ tot
d;e! # 1. A possible explanation is a selection effect;optically thin galaxies would have a small infrared-to-opticalluminosity ratio, and hence could be missed in the samplesselected by infrared emission. To check this possibility, weplot in figure 27 the velocity-integrated 21-cm flux density(Sint) versus the angular size (!P90) for the SDSS-H I andHIPASS samples, in comparison with the AKARI-SDSS andAKARI-HIPASS galaxies. The lines corresponding to severalvalues of the H I column density, !H I ! MH I=.#R
2/, are alsodepicted. It can be seen that there is no significant differencebetween the distributions of !H I for the AKARI-detected and-nondetected galaxies, and the paucity of galaxies in the regionof !H I . 10Mˇ pc"2 can be seen, roughly corresponding to$ totd;e! . 1 for typical values of fH I, fdZ , and Z. Hence, the
infrared selection bias cannot explain the paucity of opticallythin galaxies. It should be noted that the beam size of HIPASSis 15:05, which is much larger than the galaxy sizes, and hencethere should be no selection bias about the surface brightnessin the H I data.
Therefore, we consider that there is a physical effect thatreduces the efficiency of galaxy formation when $ tot
d;e! . 1.Because the opacity is to dust-heating radiation, it is mostlikely the radiative feedback by the dust photoelectric heatingof ISM. A part (typically %PE # 1–10%) of the radiation energyabsorbed by dust grains is converted to photoelectrons, which

Figure 5. A schematic merger tree for a dark matter halo. The horizontal lines represent snapshotsin the evolution of the history of the halo, corresponding to timesteps in an N -body simulation orMonte-Carlo realization of the merger tree (t1 < t2). The size of the circle indicates the mass ofthe halo. The haloes grow through merger events between haloes and by accretion of objects belowthe (halo) mass resolution (e.g. as depicted between steps t3 and t4). The final halo is shown at t5.
for a schematic merger tree). This requires typically around 50 outputs over a redshift intervalof approximately z = 20 to z = 0. Haloes are identified in a given output using a percolationalgorithm, such as friends-of-friends (Davis et al 1985) or some other prescription designed tofind a local overdensity (e.g. DENMAX, Gelb and Bertschinger (1994); Spherical-overdensity,Cole and Lacey (1996); SKID, Governato et al (1997); Bound-density-maximum, Klypinet al (1997); HOP, Eisenstein and Hut (1998)). The percolation algorithm links together allparticles that are within some specified distance of one another. The linking length is quotedas some fraction of the mean interparticle separation and is set to return objects of a particularoverdensity (see White (2002)). The indices of the particles that belong to a particular halocan then be tracked in the halo list generated from the preceding (in expansion factor) output.Merger trees can also be generated using a Monte-Carlo approach by sampling the distributionof progenitor masses predicted using the extended Press–Schechter theory (Lacey and Cole(1994); Somerville and Kolatt (1999); Cole et al (2000); for a critique of the extended Press–Schechter theory, see Benson et al (2005)). The Monte-Carlo approach generally gives aless faithful representation of the merger trees than those extracted from N -body simulations, particularly as the difference in expansion factor increases between the parent halo and theprogenitor branches (e.g. Somerville et al (2000)). For example, if one generates merger treesfor a representative sample of haloes at z = 0, and we then attempt to construct the massfunction of haloes at high redshift by combining the branches of the merger trees, with anappropriate weighting based on the abundance of the parent haloes, then the result will notagree with the mass function extracted from an N -body simulation at this epoch. The level ofthis discrepancy can be reduced by empirically tuning the progenitor distributions, though notheoretical justification exists for the form of such a correction (see, e.g. Benson et al (2001)).
