The VOICEproject in 2015

The VOICE project (see description below) will officially end in May 2015. During this year 2015 we will publish a report on the project, spread the results of the SingingEurope initiative and on the different subjects that were covered along the project. The project may reach a conclusion but the cooperation goes on! Along these three years, the 15 partners have built strong bonds and discovered new ways to work, to share and to grow together.

VOICE is a European project for the sustainable development and innovation of choral singing, a first-time major cooperation between choral operators, music educators and researchers. It is a joint effort of 15 coorganisers, spread over 11 countries. It started in June 2012 and will de-velop until May 2015. It has a total budget of almost 2,4 million EUR, with a subsidy from the European Union of almost 1,2 million EUR.

The aims of VOICE are to encourage new events and methods and the creation of innovative repertoire, promote the voice as universal instrument, improve the quality of vocal music, enable transnational mobility and circulation of (young) musicians and choral works, enhance the dialogue between cultures and generations as well as the exchange of expertise and develop new tools for the promotion of singing in music education. VOICE invests in research on the voice in partnership with universities and collect data on choral life in Europe. The 15 partners will spread the results to develop a new vision on choral singing in Europe.

Activities of VOICE from 2012 to 2015 through which these aims shall be reached include a major choral festival in Italy, an urban youth choir festival in Sweden, singing as a tool for reconciliation in Cyprus, three ses-sions of the Eurochoir for young singers in Czech Republic, Hungary and France, training courses and seminars for conductors and managers in Austria, France, Italy and Sweden, a conference on Mediterranean Music in Spain, a symposium on singing and music education in Hungary, a vo-cal training programme for teachers and a cooperation programme with the world of education in Belgium, research programmes on the growth of young people in relation to their singing voice and on vocal health of amateur singers, done from Belgium and United Kingdom, an interna-tional collection of lullabies and databases on choral life, voice-training and conductors’ training in Europe.

Singing EuropeWhat do we really know about choral life in

Europe? How many choirs are active? How

many singers? How old are they, and how

many are professionals? And there are so many

other questions we can not really answer... We

will gather some of this information through

partner organisations and federations, but we

will also set up an online survey tool (with an

alternate paper version), so that every choir can

enter its own data. We will need everybody‘s

cooperation to spread this information, and we

invite as many choirs, singers and conductors

as possible to answer the short survey.

Pécs, Hungary | 24/7 – 2/8/2015

Are you Hung(a)ry for Singing? Then you should not miss the next edi-tion of the Festival EUROPA CANTAT, held for the second time in Pécs, Hungary. EUROPA CANTAT is an international singing festival at which you can join more than 3000 participants from all parts of Europe and beyond. There is no competing, but purely the pleasure of meeting one another and singing together, learning new repertoire and techniques, and working with leading conductors from all over the world.

Aim GroupSingers (all types of choirs – mixed, male, female, youth, children’s, girls’ – vocal ensembles and individuals as well as families) from beginners to advanced – see Ateliers on these three pages / conductors and compos-ers (see page 18) / choral managers (see page 25)

Music ProgrammeThe music programme of the EUROPA CANTAT XIX Pécs 2015 festival has been developed along the following three guidelines: Open Gates, Crossroads, Roots & Fruits as a frame for the ateliers, the concerts, the lectures and workshops for conductors and composers and for the fringe programme. Below you will find the list of “long ateliers” which will last from 4-8 days of rehearsals with the presentation of results in concert on the last day. It is possible to combine two 4-day ateliers (part a and part b) or to stay on after your atelier, attending some of the discovery ateliers or programmes for conductors and composers. Some ateliers (when it says “+1”) contain a free day for tourism (or for attending discovery ateliers or lectures) before the final concert. All participating choirs can give concerts with their own repertoire and all participants can attend a huge number of concerts during the festival.

Deadline for applications: 30/11/2014

Win a free participation! The Friends of Choral Music in Europe are organising a lottery – tickets can be bought when registering for the festival, two tickets will win a free participation in the festival (details page 27).

European Award for Choral Composers 2014/15The European Award for Choral Composers is the continuation of the “Golden Tuning Fork” Award, organised by AGEC over many years, and was first organised by the European Choral Association – Europa Cantat in 2011/2012. The aim of the award is to discover unknown or less known choral works from different European countries, already published and/or performed or written for the occasion, that are good and interesting and can be performed by a good average choir, not just by a top-level choir.

In 2012 3 winning works were chosen and performed in the frame of the festival EUROPA CANTAT XVIII in Turin, Italy, 2 further works received special mentions (see www.eca-ec.org -> Events -> Composition Award for further details)

The next edition of the European Award for Choral Composers was organised in 2014. The deadline for applications was in May 2014, the jury will select the winning compositions by September 2014 and the compositions will be presented and performed in the Festival EUROPA CANTAT XIX in Pécs, Hungary, 24/7 – 2/8/2015 (www.ecpecs2015.hu). EuroChoir

Celebrate Europe through choral singingEuroChoir is a unique choral event organised by the European Choral Association – Europa Cantat (ECA-EC) every year in a different country. Initiated by AGEC in 1982, EuroChoir offers the opportunity to up to 60 young singers to get together for 8 days to rehearse a challenging program with two renowned conductors, improve their vocal skills with a vocal trainer and present the results of their work in public concerts. This special choir project aims to promote European choral music among young singers and to encourage cultural exchange within Europe.

Eurochoir 2015 to 2018In 2015 there will be no regular EuroChoir summer session due to the Festival EUROPA CANTAT XIX in Pécs, Hungary, which hopefully many interested young singers will attend (more on www.ecpecs2015.hu, also see pages 8 to 11).

For the years 2016 to 2018 ECA-EC is working on a further development of the EuroChoir in the frame of a multiannual European cooperation project which is currently being prepared for three consecutive sessions with a permanent artistic team building a new artistic focus for the choir which will involve movement, staging, unusual concert venues and new repertoire. Further information will be published in summer 2015.

Participation in European Cooperation Projects

Make Music! Be Heard! In 2010-2011, the European Music Council (EMC) coor-dinated the Youth in Action funded Access! project in which a policy document, the Manifesto for Youth and Music in Europe, was developed and widely dis-seminated throughout Europe. The aims of 2013-2014 Make Music! Be Heard! were to look in more detail at the issues raised in the Mani-festo and continue the debate about the role of youth in music organisations in Europe.

The central aim of Make Music! Be Heard! is tostrengthen youth participation in European musicnetworks. The project involved 80 young peoplefrom across Europe and the project activities in-cluded meetings between young people and policymakers, work placements for youth in the project partners’ offices, as well as the high-profile YouthDay in the frame of the European Forum on Music inGlasgow in 2013, where young people came together to learn, network and socialise. The tangible outcomeof the project is an online tool, listing job, training and funding opportunities for young people within the European music sector.

Make Music! Be Heard! was supported by the Europe-an Union Youth in Action programme. The European Music Council (Germany) coordinated the project in cooperation with 7 other European and international organisations: International Music Council (France), Jeunesses Musicales International (Belgium), Scottish Music Centre (United Kingdom), Superact (United Kingdom), CHROMA/Zebrock (France) and the Euro-pean Choral Association – Europa Cantat (Germany).”

14-18: from Poetry to Music This project of TENSO the European network of professional chamber choirs - brings alive poems from 1914-1918, one of the most turbulent periods in European history, in new choral music. Together with European literature lovers all over Europe, the project will bring to light known and unknown poems and other texts from that period, with special attention to texts originating from the Balkan and Eastern Europe. Young and established compos-ers will be commissioned to write new music for chamber choir - ranging from professional choirs to amateur singers - based on these texts. The project will result in a publication (internet and book) with poems, translation, recordings and scores, and a series of concerts and festivals all over Europe where the music will be performed.

„14-18: from Poetry to Music” is a multiannual coop-eration project funded by the European Union Cul-ture Programme. The project runs from 2014 to 2018 and involves 13 partners from 10 European countries and is coordinated by Cappella Amsterdam (The Netherlands) - the European Choral Association Europa Cantat is an associate partner.
